Beautiful building. So glad the Stamm house is back! We've been faithful customers through the years and 1847 is still one of our very favorite restaurants!

Good American food in an interesting historical building. They did a good job accommodating a dairy allergy. The staff were attentive and the wait wasn't long.

This place deserves a 5-star rating for all the details I noticed during my visit. 🤩✨💯

The building is deeply rooted, built back in 1847. 🏛️🕰️💯 The food was Michelin-star level, and the environment was unforgettable. 🍽️🌟😍

I loved every detail and I wish to come back again. 🥰💖🥳

This place was very well decorated, the drinks were good, the food was a little on the pricey side, but it was very good, so it was worth it. We came in about 45 minutes before close and most of the staff gave us "those looks". Multiple other couples came in after us, and it seemed most of the staff, besides Charlie, was willing to take them. That's pretty unprofessional when you work in a restaurant and you offer fish fry, you can expect that you probably won't get out on time. I understand that it's annoying, but we were made to feel like intruders. Charlie was great, the rest of the staff was not. :)

A bad experience.

Slow to be seated, despite having a reservation. *Very slow* to see a waiter and get menus. Food took *forever* to receive. And when we finally got the food there was no silverware. We had to ask for silverware, waited again, and it was delivered en masse and we had to pass it out ourselves. Furthermore, it was a birthday dinner, which we were told includes a dessert for the birthday girl, but we had to remind the waiter *three times* and even then we didn’t get it until we were walking out the door. The food is ok, but honestly, the service was bad from the minute we got there and the waiting and waiting and *waiting* spoiled the whole experience.

I recommend avoiding this restaurant.

If you want good service you’re better off going to the McDonald’s down the street. Wasted 2 hours, reservation did nothing, drinks and food took forever. Downtown prices and mediocre food. Wish we had gone somewhere else for Mom’s birthday. Will not be returning. Oh yeah and the roof leaks and the air conditioner seems to be broken. Good place to waste money.

We are here last month and it was great. Ate here again 8/8. The food was not good, so noisy could hardly hear my husband. What made it terrible is it was 90 degrees and their air conditioning wasn't working. A server said it was broken yet as we left and I asked the hostess she said it works just hot from kitchen. I told her she should have given guests the information that it was broken to see if they wanted to leave. If their air works so badly they should get a new one. Will not go back.

Best food in Madison. Not even a question.

Stamm House combines old-world French, German, and Italian fare with a handful of classic (and classy) American dishes, palettes, and ideas to capture a type of cuisine I've struggled to recreate in my own kitchen, yet I can recognize the moment I taste it.

Always my first choice for a special event or if I'm entertaining friends and/or family.

Went to dinner with a friend. We had two appetizers, truffle fries, which came with two dipping sauces. We also had beets that came with garlic toast rounds and goat cheese. She had the Beef Stroganoff. The noodles had a nice bite, and the beef tenderloin pieces were tender and sized for a good bite. The stroganoff had bell peppers, porcini mushrooms, and onions. The sauce was the right consistency. I had the seafood fettuccine. It included clams, mussels, shrimp, and scallops. The fettuccine has a white wine garlic butter sauce with tomatoes, spinach, and some chili flakes, which added a pleasent bit of heat to the dish. We had Tiramissu (the coffee in the lady fingers could be tasted) and Creme Brulee for dessert. The desserts were very good, and both of them included berries with a bit of berry sauce. I had a Blood Orange sour, and she had a Stamm Mule. Both drinks were well prepared and tasted good. My friend was having trouble with one of her legs, so we sat on the first floor. We hope to have a seat in the main dining room upstairs on our next visit. Some people were enjoying the patio experience. We were unaware of the patio option seating and did not have a light jacket along, so we decided to stay inside to prevent a chill from the nice but slightly chilling weather. We look forward to our next visit. There is plenty of parking behind the restaurant. If you have trouble walking? You may want to have your driver deliver you closer to the entrance. There is handicap parking available.

I ordered the tenderloin tips. The meat was very difficult to chew. If it was tenderloin, it was the toughest I’ve ever had. I ate only a few bites. I mentioned it to the waitress. She apologized, but did not adjust the bill.
The chairs on the patio are very hard.

Historic out of the way spot.. great for a happy hour, date-night, friends-night... with well made cocktails and solid drinks list. Appetizers are alright (brussels sprouts ok, crabcakes umm no!), had better, but they work. Heard about brunches, so its on the list to try that. Service is attentive. The interior is redone, so this is no musty smelling, falling apart kind of historic place. Inside seating is cozy and warm in winters. What I most like about this is the patio seating on a summer evening, dinner dishes are great (beware portions are pretty big), and wine list is lovely. Vast menu to pick from; would characterize it as American mid-western fare, gourmet burgers (including vegan option), nice fish-fry, pastas, steak etc. Trout dish is worth a try. Not many summer night left - get out there and check it out!

I tried the Stamm house a few times. I wanted to give them a fair shot because everyone can have an off day. Unfortunately, they are not friendly to walk-in’s at any time, busy or not, weekend or otherwise. I was made to feel like an inconvenience and semi scolded by the host for not having a reservation. The service is painfully slow and depending where you’re seated, be ok with being forgotten. Worst spot to be forgotten is by the bathrooms… also just not a great spot to be seated in general. I don’t think it was necessarily the servers fault. It feels like they received very little or no training. I’m guessing new staff is kind of thrown to the wolves. Drinks forgotten, not being checked on, needing plates, and waiting a really long time for them to come back with the check. They may just have a really high turnover so everyone is always new. If you can go in with low expectations you won’t be disappointed.

It was a busy night with only one server upstairs, but with folks helping drop off the dishes it helped a lot. I chose this location to be for my birthday meal as I loved the rich history and haven't been able to visit (i work nearby) yet. I was eager to see the inside and try the menu. I ordered the Blood Orange Bourbon Sour and that was lovely. We tried thr cheese curds, very melt in your mouth buttery goodness. My husband got the sirloin with roasted potatoes and tossed greens. The dressing on the greens is a strong vinaigrette which was a nice balance with the richness of the potatoes and sirloin. The sirloin was ok, maybe the cut was making the meat more chewy than melt in your mouth type. I had the shrimp and scallops with penne. It was good, the scallops were a bit overdone but there were only two so that's fine. I had the pumpkin pie and that was well spiced (all spice, as it wasn't too nutmeg, too cinnamon or clovy). Overall good food, but perhaps we just didn't choose the right meal for our first visit as we felt that we should come back before recommending.

This is probably the best restaurant in Middleton. Most dishes are great. My partner and I love the burger, tenderloin tips, and French onion soup. My absolute favorite is the chicken Caesar salad — one of the best I’ve ever had. The dressing is made in-house and the chicken is grilled to perfection. Dessert options are higher end and delicious. They also make great old fashioned’s, as every Wisconsin restaurant should. Why 4 stars? Their parking lot is terrible! Humongous potholes everywhere! And it’s been like this for several years now and only gotten worse. Every time we visit we’re afraid we’re going to bottom out. So, I’ll update to 5 stars when they update their asphalt!

Update: The parking lot and driveway have been fixed! Yay!

1847 at the Stamm House is a wonderful restaurant experience with good food, good service, and wonderful ambiance

The food selections are varied from a hamburger though fancier pastas and meat dishes. My salmon and asparagus linguini was very good, but not an exceptional experience. Leslie loved her farm burger.

Service was very pleasant, but the delay between “steps” were quite long.

Atmosphere is exceptional…We Sat outside in the good summer weather on the patio…Really pleasant

Plenty of parking…I think they just repaved their parking lot…but e we walked s as e we live nearby.

Bravo Stamm House! We will come back again! Four of us had dinner there Thursday night (071323). We came with sketchy expectations based on others' word of mouth, but we had out-of-town visitors and wanted to partake in local, non-franchise culture and food. Parking lot was full. Good sign. Lively atmosphere inside. We chose the upstairs thinking there'd be less noise (see below). I had the Farm Burger. My fiancé had Chicken Pancetta. Her daughter, Lake Perch, and her boyfriend, the Stamm Burger. Beautiful presentation, all were delicious to the point that at first bite, we exclaimed how good the food was! How often does that happen? Service was prompt and attentive. We liked the local history of the place, the Underground Railroad, the historical pictures, and the craft of the structure. The only drawback -- and I say this for most restaurants and bars -- is that public spaces are enclosed in hard surfaces: stone and wood floors, walls, ceilings, that amplify and echo noise making conversation difficult. All in all, and I'm a tough grader, I give Stamm House 4.8 stars. Happy for your success!

Great food, service, & the building is a beautifully kept piece of history.

Just top-notch food, great atmosphere and history, and friendly staff. We went here for our anniversary, and I was expecting it to be quite the splurge. It was actually pretty reasonably priced, i thought, especially considering the food was just fantastic.

Don’t spend your time and money eating here. Not worth it. Food takes way too long to come out and is average at best but the price point is too high for what comes out. Bar service was solid. Won’t return.

We were a table of 5 and were seated in the upstairs dining room. Our server, Anita, was attentive and cordial. The food was nicely prepared and plated beautifully.
The reasons service and atmosphere are rated less than 5 stars is simply that the wait time from order to table was in excess of 45 minutes and the din in the dining room was too loud to carry on a conversation for a table of 5.
Will definitely return on a less busy evening.

Fried cod- 4/5, not "beer" flavored, but salty enough for taste. Wet batter but not heavy nor greasy. Baked cod 5/5 - good seasoning, moist, and tender. Fish taco (cod) - made the beer batter better with a green salsa, tortilla and slaw; 3 pieces and cheaper than fish fry 4.5/5. Calamari 4.5/5 - light crunch with a light chew and a thin well-flavored marinara.
Con: took a little while (30m?) for fish to arrive
Pro: Pretty building, nice drinks, pretty accommodating staff, close parking. A few tables for mobility issues.

This is a great supper club. It has a lot of rich history. It was built in 1847 and has been a store and a hotel. It is believed to have been part of the underground railroad.

Our dining experience was very nice. We ordered the truffle fries served with garlic aoli and chipotle aoli. They were amazing. The chicken Alfredo was very good. We also ordered the ribeye steak. That was served with with a spinach topped baked potato. The flavors were outstanding.

Our server was great. The atmosphere was lovely. It was warm and inviting. I highly recommend it.

We live in Delaware but visit Middleton/Madison frequently. This place has become our favorite go to when we are in town. The food quality is 5 stars. The staff could not be more accommodating and the venue is comfortable. We will be in town this week and looking forward to dinner!

The food was so delicious! I was v pleased w the vegetarian options on the menu. The building is beautiful and I loved all the historial information and photos!
The only issue we had was that it was so dimly lit at our table upstairs that two of the 4 of our party had trouble reading the menu and one of us actually had to get out their phone flashlight to see it. Maybe consider little led lamps at the tables?

Went tonight and was really excited as a first timer. For the price I could've saved my money and gone down the road to Culvers. Small portions of fish and fries odd tasting sauces,, no side salad or fresh bread or rolls with dinner, just expected a bit more from such a highly recommended place.

This place is OG Wisconsin. Come here for the fish fry and the classic old fashioned cocktail, but stay for the French onion soup and the sirloin. And while you're at it, read the back of the menu to learn how this building was once an important stop on the underground railroad, along with other interesting historical facts. Thanks for being one of my best meals in Wisconsin, a real Stammtisch!
