Swedish restaurant American restaurant Breakfast restaurant European restaurant Restaurant Scandinavian restaurantDescription
Located in Sister Bay, Al Johnson’s is an authentic Swedish family owned restaurant where you can dine beneath the goats grazing the sod roof. It's quite a sight, and it's made this place one of the most famous restaurants in Door County. Inside the casual, carpeted dining room, young ladies in Scandinavian garb dish out Swedish and American food. The menu consists of a variety of Swedish fare, from Swedish pancakes with lingonberries to Swedish meatballs, whitefish, sandwiches, salads, and a variety of hot and cold plates. You'll also find burgers, cheese curds, and drinks certain to send you home smiling.

Al Johnson's has become a place that we stop at every year when we are in town for Fall Fest! It is such a unique restaurant with the goats on the roof and the food is very good! The Swedish meatballs and pancakes are phenomenal and the atmosphere is great and kid friendly! Definitely recommend! Only downside is that when we come it is packed and we end up waiting 1-1.5 hours for a table during Fall Fest. Having the shops attached to the restaurant is a good way to kill some time though!

2025 review update: Everything was tasty, hot, and delicious! I loved the experience and view, too! ❤️
2023 review: Al Johnson’s was a super fun breakfast dining experience for my family! The Swedish pancakes were delicious, (four in a serving)! We had a beautiful view of Sister Bay from our corner window booth. Our waitress was very efficient and friendly; happily and quickly getting everything we requested. I loved the restaurant’s Swedish decor and the adjacent gift shop was packed with interesting items to purchase! The goats grazing on the grass roof were charming too! ❤️

Our server was amazing!! Our food was great! The wait is crazy and you don't get much warm and fuzzy from most of the staff. But...they are dealing with a lot of people! The swedish looked beautiful topped with more whipped cream than you could ever wish for!

The waitstaff costumes were authentic and so cute. The food and service were outstanding. The maple syrup was warm amd delicious. Such a great variety on the menu! I'm not even Swedish, but I was so glad we visited this restaurant.

When in Door County, Al Johnson's is a must for Swedish pancakes with lingonberries and meetballs. Food is delicious and service is impeccable. Expect a long wait during peak times. We waited 2 hours, but we got coffee at the shop down the street and browsed the two shops on either side of the restaurant. The goats on the roof thrill me even now as an adult.

We visited Door County three times over the years and finally decided to give it a try. (It’s always busy.) We were utterly disappointed. The goats on the roof are cute for photos, but the food and service were both underwhelming. The taste was not good. No kids menu for the kids, so we ordered meatballs for them to share, and no extra plate for the second kid. We didn’t get everything we ordered; and the service felt cold — not a smile from beginning to end, from the hostess to the waiter to the cashier. Maybe they were exhausted… I don’t understand what the hype is about? Just see the goats and go.

The wait was very long, but it's a touristy area so that was understandable. What i ate was nothing special but it was good. It was very loud and busy inside. There was multiple stores to shop at in the restaurant but they were very high priced, even the 50% off story. I would eat there again.

The live goats 🐐 were on the grass roof ! Very popular restaurant for Swedish/American food. They have expanded over the years and today, we opted to enjoy lunch outside. It was such a warm, gorgeous day and enjoyed the outdoor patio. Tables with colorful yellow umbrellas provided us shade. Don't miss shopping at both boutiques. The one in the restaurant has beautiful Swedish gifts, clothing, Al Johnsons labeled food products ect.. The other new store has beautiful imported gifts and more.

If you are in Door County you must stop by Al Johnson's! Don't just think it's some tourist trap/kitschy spot. The food in the restaurant is amazing (Swedish Meatballs!!), and service- great!! Plus goats on the roof!!
To add on - if you can't get to Door County, check out the website store! If you LOVE lingonberries - Al Johnson"s Wild Swedish Lingonberries you can buy from the online store are the best, hands down! Plus they are reasonably priced, and customer service is amazing!! You will get your product delivered so quickly! With the holidays coming up, stock up now on your lingonberries for your lefse & krumkake!!

I got my order to go. I was still able to order everything off the typical menu which I was really happy about because we brought our dog and were unable to eat inside. Food was delicious. We got the Al’s poutine, pancake special with lingonberries, 2 eggs over hard, side of fruit, hot chocolate, lingonberry lemonade, and strawberry shortcake. All very delicious and fresh. Food for people of all ages.

Had lunch here! My estimation of Al’s is if they didn’t have goats on the roof no one would eat here! I had soup and salad. Salad was very small with a cup of dressing dumped on it. It was inedible. The soup was supposed to be chicken and rice but it was more like chili with beans and corn in a red base. I have ordered other things here before and they have all been subpar. I have been with a group that wanted to go otherwise I wouldn’t have. You would be better off ordering breakfast if you go but don’t expect crispy breakfast potatoes because they are mushy. My ice tea was never refilled for the $3.75 price. They need to quit relying on the goats and Swedish vibe and make better food!

Host was very rude. We have a 3 week old that we brought in a stroller and she proceeded to say our baby (who cannot hold their head up yet) has to be out of the stroller for us to eat there. Told us to put our baby in a car seat or suggested a high chair (for a 3 week old) which is completely absurd. If you don't have room, then make room. Not a very welcoming establishment. I do not recommend and we will not try going back in the future. Not family friendly.

Went there to specifically see the goats on the roof. After a 5 hour ride, no goats. So I had breakfast, they were kind enough to charge my phone while I ate at the bar. Orange juice tasted fresh squeezed food came out quickly. Not piping hot but good enough. I was pleasantly pleased that my toast was lightly toasted and buttered, the jam put that over the top.

Al Johnson’s is a must-visit for our family whenever we’re in Door County. The iconic goats grazing on the sod roof are such a fun and unique sight! The iconic Al Johnson's is still one of the top must experience restaurant attractions in northern DC.
The goats were probably on break from all the Labor Day weekend excitement, but the grass roofs still stood out when looking down 42 from a block north.
Plenty of parking, seated quickly. Food was served quickly. Coffee ran dry quickly with no refills in sight.
Food was the usual. No time for the gift shop today.

Nice historical and culturally rich restaurant with a Swedish goods store attached. The wait can be very long (they don't take reservations), so be sure to go early especially on busy days/tourist heavy days. The service was friendly and swift -- love the waitstaff traditional outfits and clogs. The food was okay to say the least. The meatballs and gravy were fine as well as the Swedish pancakes. My favorite part of the meal was the linden berry sauce that went with the Swedish pancakes. The lingonberry lemonade just has a hint of lingonberry flavor, the lemon overpowers it. Was also unlucky that the goats were tucked up on the top and not very visible. Overall, the food was okay and the bigger selling points are the goats and Swedish dining experience.

If you like Swedish meatballs from IKEA, you’re going to hate them after having an entree at Al Johnson’s. Solid 5 stars EVEN after a 2-hour wait on Labor Day weekend. I hate onions in my salad and they didn’t even taste oniony, especially with the lingonberry dressing—this is a good thing! The goats are kitschy enough but the food is outstanding too. I would come back, highly recommend.

We visited this place for breakfast. Although we were told the wait would be about 20 minutes, we were seated in just 10. I really enjoyed the way they grilled the bread with butter inside, and while their pancakes were nothing like what I had expected, I was pleasantly surprised once I tasted them. The pancakes were thin, almost like crepes, with a chewy texture, and spreading butter on them made them wonderfully savory.
The meatballs, however, were a bit dry, so I don’t think I would choose them next time.
At first, I noticed that the staff all looked rather stern, and I wondered if perhaps something was wrong. But later, I came to think it might just be a natural expression typical of their culture.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the goats on the roof, which would have been a treat. Still, the food was excellent, and we had a truly enjoyable time.

The two cashiers in the gift shop this afternoon were the most unfriendly, unwelcoming staff I've experienced in a long time. I had six items I was purchasing.....no greeting from either one as I set my items on the counter. One girl proceeded to tell the other girl what the price was....so she could ring it up. Then no word as to what the total of my purchas was.....so I tapped my card on the card reader and hit "print". The cashier then handed me the receipt....again....no acknowledgement that I was even there. I was so tempted to voice my sarcastic opinion to them.....saying "What a pleasurable experience this has been...can't wait to come back and bring it two sisters in tomorrow......NOT!! The food was great, but I will not shop in the Butic ........ever. Very poor treatment of paying customers....Aug 29, 2025.....at 1:45p

New seating policy of seating small groups quickly while making large groups wait over an hour discriminates against larger groups, is unfair, and is not what has traditionally been done in the past. Sad that this policy has changed. It used to be first come first served. (We had a group of 5).
Edit: after the initial hour wait time we were told, I inquired how much longer and was told 20-25 minutes longer. I brought my concern to hostes, there was a brief staff meeting and we were called to a table shortly after. Once seated, service was fast and courteous. Food was good but would not recommend the Canadian bacon.
I understand this restaurant is extremely busy but we have been coming here for decades (50+ Years). It is frustrating seeing people walk in and be seated immediately or within minutes while my group was forced to wait over an hour. PLEASE return to first come first served.

The pancakes here are amazing… delicious! The staff is friendly, which makes the experience even better. However, you’ll need to wake up early to avoid long waits, as the place gets busy fast. Definitely worth it if you don’t mind the early start!

I'm not sure it's worth trying to eat here anymore.
My wife and I tried last year, 2+ hour wait time, ridiculous. This year, was there with our son and his family at 830am and 2 hour wait, ridiculous - went to another restaurant and had excellent food and was seated immediately. Came back later in the morning just to check, yup, nearly 2 hour wait still... The only reason I'm giving you 2 stars is because of the service in the gift shop. I refuse to have to come to a restaurant to put my name on a list and come back 2 hours later in the hopes of eating...
I would strongly recommend some type of reservation system, preferably online, so a person doesn't have to make 2 trips.
Also, we were past the place no less than 10 times and never saw a single goat. Temps were very mild and somewhat overcast. Please tell me your not keeping them inside due to the fire smoke from Canada??? Really wanted the little ones to see the goats...

The service from the hostess was so bad, we ended up leaving ro take our business elsewhere. She did not explain clearly how seating worked with reservations or seating options. She just acted like we should know how they run their establishment. You need reservations. If you don't have them, you can sit at the counter and order food. Not too hard to explain, but for her apparently it was. I watched two other customers walk away upset as well because they were confused. You'd think the person in charge of seating would be able to explain it, but obviously not.(a bystander told us how it works there).

Wish I could tell you how it was, we showed up at 1100 and they said we can seat you at 2!!!!!! We were so excited to try this place out just to be deflated when we finally got there. Would've understood an hour, maybe hour and a half, but not 3 hrs wait.

Waitress was great with good suggestions for things to do in the area. Good food and has a cute gift shop connected.

If you're looking for a nice dining experience, this is not the place. The wait time was 1 1/2 hours which we were expecting. We walked around their store and it was really nice.Once we were seated, the waitress was really nice and the food came quickly. However, the tables are crammed together and the place is so loud that we had to yell to hear each other speak. We ordered the Swedish Meatballs and they were average at best ($20 for 6 meatballs). We ordered one mimosa and 2 meatball entrees and our total bill was $63 with tip. Besides the goats on the roof, we do not understand the hype.
