So glad I was finally able to try this place with my husband last night! The food was absolutely outstanding and I could tell the ingredients were fresh. I got the basil gnocchi and my husband got the salmon piccata. We also split a beef tenderloin. The food was great but I have not felt so unwelcome in a restaurant in a long time. Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of my waitress but I don’t think she even said it. She wouldn’t make eye contact with me and was condescending when I asked a question about the menu. This was my first time dining here and I was greeted very warmly so the poor service was a surprise. She checked on me once and was just not very nice overall. I might give it a second try because I know people have off days but she looked pretty friendly with the other people she was helping. Idk

What a nice restaurant! Very chic atmosphere and the food is to die for. I got the Cheese Risotto Cake with Spare Ribs on top and a 1/2 house salad. In all honesty, the cheese risotto cake with Short ribs might be one of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten. Author's lives up to hype when it comes to flavor for sure. The short rib empanada was damn delectable. Pretty sure I could eat a baker's dozen or so. The eggs benedict were also tasty. Overall, my only issue was with the portions. Admittedly, I eat like a pig, so there's that. Anywho, be sure to add 2-3 empanadas to your entrée if you are similarly afflicted. Word to your moms, they got flavor bombs... Friendly staff and cool place, too.

Entering Author's was like stepping into a different era. They had the stamped metal ceiling and brick walls. It was quiet, though at about half occupancy. Dignified was the word that came to mind. Wow!!!!!! I am kicking myself again for not getting here sooner. Located in a beautiful old building downtown Appleton, this long, narrow restaurant offers a wonderful ambiance with big windows at the front, a fully stocked bar (with the best bloody's and mimosas) and the right amount of seating to keep it cozy and private yet functional for them to fill the place up.
Dined in for breakfast, skipped the local coffee and went right to the cocktails that were hand made and delicious. I added the empanada to my bloody Mary and was glad I did, absolutely delicious and such a cool touch. My wife had the floral mimosa that was perfectly light and tasty. She ordered the cheese risotto cake- this dish was slightly sweet served with avocado and a poached egg, it was very pleasant to eat with the flavors balancing perfectly! I had the daily scramble feature- cast iron Pan loaded with caramelized onion, potatoes, fluffy eggs, sausage, cheese, and avocado on top with a nice thick slice of buttered sourdough.
Everything was fantastic from service, food, ambiance, and price. We can't want to get back for dinner, this is a must try for anyone!

*Went back today for the lemon ricotta pancakes- marvelous! Perfect about of berries and lemon flavor that pair perfectly with the fluffy pancakes. The coffee is the best, I went with the quinoa ball that had sweet potato, red pepper, Maple chili, vinaigrette, arugula, and spinach in it. Topped with a fried egg. That too was perfect and super filling. My wife went with the salmon BLT sandwich served on a perfectly toasted brioche bun, and loaded with flavor served with the side of the tomato soup which was fantastic. You gotta get here- service, did and ambiance are on point 💯

This was our first visit, we came in for breakfast right at opening on Monday. Erin greeted us and was very polite and welcoming.

The restaurant gives off a comfortable homey feel. The music choice was good, the volume loud but not obnoxious to where we couldn't talk across the table. We admired the artwork and fixtures and even enjoyed the random coffee mugs they seem to use.

The menu although small had lots of options, we were able to chose from the entire menu even though it was only 8am. We went with the burrito bowl and the Skillet, the special of the day. Both came out looking very appealing. The dishes tasted fresh and flavorful. The toast with their homemade jam and butter were my favorite part. Everything was so delicious. The bread pudding was suggested to us at the end of our meal so we split a slice, very good.

Service was good. She checked on us enough but also let us enjoy our meal and conversation. The cost wasn't terrible, about what to expect these days while dining out. We will return!

This is my favorite breakfast/brunch place within 100 miles of where I live. I never miss a chance to eat here. I have also had lunch here and it was awesome. Everything is so lovingly prepared and the ingredients really shine. I love that they use real maple syrup… this is Wisconsin after all! Today I had the sourdough french toast with the most delicious apples on top and it was wonderful - great balance of sweet and savory. Sorry for the low quality picture I couldn’t wait to eat! Quaint little restaurant downtown in cute vintage building. Service was perfect. Limited variable menu due to using fresh ingredients was a plus. The food was slightly better than average. Chicken florentine was good but unexpectedly had brown gravy instead of the typical white sauce. Arugula salad and risotto were perfection. The bison was bad. Never had it before so didn't know what to expect, but it was extremely tough to cut and had a gamey taste. Bread pudding was really good with their caramel sauce. Only open for dinner on Fridays but are open for breakfast and lunch.

5 stars all around! I've had the pleasure of dining at Authors for both breakfast and dinner and never have I been disappointed. Stayed overnight in Appleton for the Lions/Packers game last night. Tried this place for breakfast on our way out of town. The server was excellent! Hands down the best place I've eaten in Appleton in years. We had the fettuccine Alfredo and the Scottish salmon with toffee cake for dessert. We also had a cocktail before dinner. The food was moderately priced but tasted Michelin 5 star. The atmosphere is chic casual and a great place for a date or special occasion or not. The service was good but honestly who cares if the food is this amazing? We will definitely eat here again. I didn't ask about catering but would definitely cater a party or business meal if that was an option. They do have a room for groups as well.

An omelet with a side of potatoes and a piece of brioche bread with wonderful jam, the brioche bread was actually a happy accident I had asked for wheat and the server noticed immediately and offered to get the wheat bread but I was happy to try the brioche and was not sad about missing out on the wheat, 5/5. I AM FURIOUS WITH THE OWNERSHIP OF THiS ESTABLISHMENT!!!! Do you want to know why?!?!?! Because after this meal, the scales have fallen from my eyes and I no longer have the ability to act like a human being and make breakfast at home. After my first bite of their Argentian empanada, I had transcended to a plane where all worldly troubles had dissolved and the hate and divisiveness of our current social climate was a distant memory. Our knowledgeable and enthusiastic server, Victoria, was the sherpa we needed to traverse the unknown of wonders that is Author's Kitchen and Bar. Every recommendation brought us closer to enlightenment as we tried the tomato cream which if the bowl was big enough, I would bathe in it. My beautiful wife fancied the omlette and I the Croque Madame. Both were beyond belief and each bite brought a sense of peace and belonging into our souls. We finished our experience with the decadent and life-changing lemon ricotta pancakes. I don't know what the future holds for us but I will say this. We will be returning until the day the earth takes back the life we have been given. I cannot recommend this establishment enough to the people of Appleton and the world!

We really missed going to Penny's to get the tomato soup. So we were thrilled to discover that at some point in the recent past this place, Author's, opened in the Penny's location and is serving something extraordinarily similar (maybe someone gave them the recipe?) So far we've only been the one time, so we each had the grilled cheese and tomato soup. But we're looking forward to trying the rest of the menu.

There just aren't enough restaurants like this, that sit in the space between fast casual and fine dining. We need more like this.

Great local place for some great food. We were very excited to try it for the first time. I got the lunch special. Salmon Power Bowl with rice, avocado, arugula, an egg and sweet potatoes. It was one of the best tasting protein bowls I've ever had. Wish this would be a full time menu item! Wife had the Gnocchi pasta. It was also fantastic. Kirk is a great server and provides excellent service.

A very nice place on the Ave. We went here for a special Valentines day dinner and were very impressed! I would recommend that you try the empanadas, they are always served and they always have a special rotating option.

*We called in for a reservation and got in at the last minute, thanks to an employee’s help. We called late, so it was either go extremely early, or not at all. We’re soooo glad we went.
*Upon entering, we were greeted with a smile, and attentive seating.
*Our server, Kirk was more than gracious, attentive, and when he didn’t know the specifics of a dish, he readily got the answers to our question- all without being prompted to find out. (Not something we’ve seen much of lately in our state; no matter the establishment. Sometimes we’ve had to almost beg for them to get answers)
Kirk was also extremely aware of his other tables, not just us. He truly is a great part of this business!
*While small, the menu had a nice variety of dishes.
*Our meals were absolutely delicious! Only regret was not being able to personally show our gratitude to the kitchen staff. They were understandably swamped- it was Valentines Day.

As a foodie, I take my food seriously. This place TOPS MY CHARTS. The service and the food cannot be beat. Want a recommendation? The empanadas. Oh my gosh. The sweet potato empanadas to be more specific. The mushroom and swiss one too. YUM. Such flaky, golden crust with an absolutely delicious inside. Try the pesto sauce with it! Then, if you want to try the best coffee ever... try the Cafe Batido. It's whipped coffee with whipped cream and dulce de leche on top. Ugh, yep. Just as good as it sounds. I also have to recommend the salmon sashimi if you enjoy sushi (the sauce is to die for, and so is the salmon). The tomato soup is SO creamy and the best i've ever tasted. And... okay if you're a breakfast person the biscuits and gravy=heaven and so does the eggs benedict. Everything hits the spot so good. You gotta try the food here. Trust me.

The empanadas at this place are so good and my love for them and this place is so known, that when I moved 2 states away, my best friend in Appleton legitimately walked into this place and asked if they could make a par-baked order of these to go that she could freeze and mail to me, which she did. So on Christmas eve, I was able to enjoy a 4-pack of Author's chicken empanadas in the middle of Iowa. You guys are seriously the best!
