My wife and I took a little trip to Balsam Lake with the express purpose of dining at the Balsam Lake Cafe along with a little sightseeing. Not much to look at from outside and a little rustic on the inside, but that's part of its charm. Then there's the food. OMG! Freshness quality and friendly service. It deserves much higher than its 4.6 rating. We drove an hour and a half to eat there and will do it again.

Stopped into Balsam Lake Café for breakfast and loved it! The food was hot, fresh, and came out quickly. I had the classic breakfast plate and it was cooked perfectly — generous portions without being over the top. The coffee was great too, which is always important first thing in the morning.

The café has a cozy, small-town feel with really friendly staff that made me feel welcome right away. It’s exactly the kind of place you hope to find in a lake town. I’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in Balsam Lake!

This place looked promising! But we were quickly let down. Seated quickly but service was rude, a 5 top shouldn’t be an inconvenience but it sure seemed like we pissed off the waitress from the get go. Food was pretty good but they were out of almost everything at 10:30 am. And then we waited a full hour for some eggs and pancakes. Food itself was great and almost made up for the lack of service after drinks were dropped. Overall would not return based on customer service alone.

We love trying local places as we live in the area. Had high hopes for the BLC. It was chaos. Not a good experience, and that's being super understanding with all the excuses we were given while there. Even though they kept saying it was busy and they were behind, it was weird as it's a small place and tables were empty. One server was loud, obnoxious and somewhat rude to people, one was kind, and quiet, one was knowledgeable but we only saw her when there was issues. Ordered a chai latte and hot chocolate first, hot chocolate was lukewarm and weirdly didn't taste like hot chocolate, the Chai latte was not Chai, instead was strong coffee with milk or creamer. Our food finally came after an hour and 15 minutes. We thought ok, it will be super good and make up for everything else......nope. It wasn't bad, but more Meh. (Biscuits and gravy was the highlight of the 3 meals). Then they couldn't give anyone a receipt, and couldn't count cash, so didn't take it due to the computer being down(?). It became laughable truly, like we were being punked. The truly strange part was being told for a hash and chai latte(which wasn't) my bill was over $27.
I would pay that all day long if it was worth it. I wish I could say this was because they were super busy on a holiday weekend....but with only 5-6 tables with people.......and people leaving after being treated rudely or waiting so long, it simply appears to be the norm. I hope things get better.

Well we arrived at 9:30am. What a chaotic ride from the minute we sat down. No one seems to know who was taking orders from where or which person was supposed to bring menus. Finding a pen to take a drink order was a real challenge for the young red head. But the woman she called mom or “the adult child” as she referred to her, didn’t seem to have any better grasp on the tasks of taking orders or keeping tables straight either. It took over an hour from placing our order to getting our order. There was only three of us. Having your staff yelling at each other and customers is very off putting, but we ordered so we were going to see this through. They kept saying so many people were leaving and not telling them after they ordered. But from where we were sitting I completely empathize with their decision. The young red head told a family of five, if you want to eat you have to move the tables from one side of the patio to another and deal with it. Good on those folks for leaving. There is zero reason for that treatment, especially in front of small children. I can say the food was decent. We will never be back nor would we recommend this place to anyone. My heart does go out to the owners daughter. She looked to be carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders and the heavy set “mom/adult child” should never talk to you like that. You are young and still learning this industry. If she has the “experience” she was boasting it wouldn’t have been that bad.
To the owner, do better, hire better. Be present in your own business.

Great experience at the Balsam Lake Cafe for lunch today! We ordered a burger, chicken sandwich, eggs Benedict, and a seasonal coffee. The food was was great and the latte was delicious! I love that all of the food is local and made fresh :) French fries made from a potato are delicious and I love it. Everyone was really friendly :). I'm new to the area (just bought a house!) and the server was super friendly and told us about a bunch of events that happen in town and a bit about the area. Spoke to the owner before we left while we were buying one of the take home frozen dinners and she was really kind too! This place was pretty decent overall. We were seated quickly and ordered coffee and food. The cappuccino I got was so-so, mostly because it didn’t have much foam, so it felt more like a latte (not a big deal). The eggs Benedict was delicious, and I would order that again! We also got a breakfast burrito, but it was given to someone else by mistake. We had to wait quite a bit to get it, but we were not charged for it, which was appreciated. The burrito also tasted great! We tried a couple cinnamon rolls, which were a bit too sweet and didn’t have much flavor, in our opinion. Overall, pretty good and we would love to come back!

This place is a gem! Everything possible is made from scratch. Mushrooms are foraged, and everything is fresh, fresh, and fresh. This means you will wait a bit longer for your meal, but it is totally worth it. We had county fried steak and the scramble. Perfect portions on the larger size and delicious!
I love to try specialty coffees, so I had the toasted marshmallow pumpkin espresso, and it was PERFECT!

Probably the best country fried steak I’ve ever had. Made from scratch and absolutely delicious. Eggs and hashbrowns were great too.

Service was good and friendly, although they did apologize in advance that they were short staffed. The wait ended up being not too long. The interior and upholstery of the restaurant was in pretty bad shape, but maybe some guests will think it adds to the charm.

All in all, great breakfast experience. Will definitely return next time we’re by Balsam Lake.

AMAZING all-day breakfast food with upbeat, friendly service in a cozy, classic cafe. Our family grabbed Yahtzee off their shelf during the very brief wait for food. Scratch biscuits and gravy were perfection as were the blueberry pancakes. Smothered chicken sandwich also received top marks and the classics- eggs, toast, and bacon were as-good-as-it gets. I'll start this with a review from my 7 year old "The 1st girl who helped us was so nice Mom but that lady who took over for her was very rude, why was she like that Mom?" Couldn't have said it better myself. We went in right at open and sat at the bar top, younger girl with long dark hair in a braid helped us, she was WONDERFUL and took care of the whole place that was getting busy all alone until the other lady showed up (giver her a raise she deserves it). That person was rude as my Daughter called her, maybe talk to your employees about not complaining about other customers loudly in front of costumers. Very sorry to her that we as non servers don't know that you don't like silverware put on the plate, in our minds we were just trying to help. Apologies to you for that. Her behavior was just off, she was so unfriendly and spoke to the other server so poorly. Really hope my tip only went to the other server who deserved it 10000%.

My disabled daughter and I drove northeast 1 1/2 hours to meet my other daughter, her husband, and my two grandchildren. They drove 1 1/2 hours southwest. We met last winter at this little restaurant to celebrate a late Christmas and were very happy with the food and friendly service. However, this time was not so great. We arrived at 9am and planned to take the same small area where we had all met last winter. The rest of the group had not yet arrived. I was totally shocked by the rudeness of one of the waitresses. Very loudly and in front of other customers, she told us we could not be seated because they don't seat people until the whole group is there and to go wait outside. Now, if this was some rule we had never heard of, she could have politely addressed the situation rather than embarrass us in front of everyone. The rest of the group arrived and we were seated. By 9:30 we had our order in but soon realized they were way behind with cooking. It took until 11:00 for some of our orders to trickle out. We did notice that people who had placed orders after ours were served first because they threatened to leave. As guests ate and left, Miss Hospitality was not the short-tempered person we had encountered earlier. Despite this, we all felt she needed some education in customer service because "warm and fuzzy" did not describe her. The other staff were friendly. The food was pretty good. All it took was one rude person to throw a wrench into what should have been a pleasant day for me to celebrate my grandchildren's birthdays. We will never go back to this restaurant.

I came here on a break from a job site, walked in, and got seated at the nice little diner countertop. I didn’t expect the four seasons, I was looking for a good breakfast in a small town, and that’s what I got. Taking a needed break...I finally got out to enjoy breakfast at a local place! Love the atmosphere with the outdoor patio area that is dog friendly and also live music at 11a! Street side has a portable fire pit which looks like it would be fun to sit n have a drink by it!

Tried the Cinnamon french toast special which has a custardy texture to it for appetizer. Followed by corned beef hash (w/o toast) and traditional eggs benedict (w/o english muffin).

All of it was delicious! You can't go wrong eating here!

I highly recommend going here, the people that work here provide great service. They were so enthusiastic to be around. Their food is sweet, savory, and fresh. The cost of the food made sense if you compare it to the quality of the food/restaurant. The Balsam Hash is the bomb. And don’t forget to get their Special with their homemade cranberry sauce. I might be a little biased since this place holds so much history for my family, but it is truly my favorite cafe. Everyone who works there is so friendly and the owner is an absolute sweetheart. My husband and I have had pretty much every single thing on the menu now and it is all delicious! Their gouda mac and cheese from the take and bake section is the best mac I have ever had. Wow, here I am in a small town called Balsam Lake in rural Wisconsin writing a review for a great small cafe. Go ahead, be surprised, I’ll wait…...! Well, you might find yourself here at some point, and you just might be looking for a place to have breakfast or lunch. Balsam Lake Cafe, without a doubt, has the best breakfast in town; period! They have the best Biscuits and Gravy that I have come across since I left my mothers kitchen. I think their secret is that they take their time and make all of their fare from scratch. I have to tell you, as good as the breakfast is, their cook knows how to make a hamburger (and don’t forget gravy and biscuits). I love Jalapeño peppers and this cook uses Jalapeño infused bacon that makes the simple act of eating a hamburger a epicurean event. I have been eating at this cafe when I am in town for about 6 years, but since the new owners (Angie and her family)have taken over they have really redefined their A-game. I don’t know their hours—that is probably on the review page—but I do know that reviews can’t tell the whole story; so please, don’t take my word for it, go and order food and decide for yourself. I’ve had breakfast here 4 times and the food is excellent. And not small town greasy breakfast (which I’m good with) but high quality ingredients. Great service and good people. A must visit on a weekend to trip to the area.

Balsam Lake Cafe is a clean, cozy, family run restaurant. The chai latte was very good and the french toast made out of cinnamon fritter bread was heavy and pudding cake-like with syrup soaked in. The cinnamon rolls were a bit dry. A hard-working son in the kitchen exercised patience with his mom's chastisement, this is a family business.

Our 1st time to Balsam Lake 2 weeks ago. We stopped in for breakfast. We were delighted by the cozy friendly atmosphere. Ordered the Caramel pecan homemade rolls. OMG..they were incredibly decadent. Pancakes big as a plate using homemade batter. We came back next day for more rolls. I had apple fritter French toast. It was divine! We are returning October 6th & can hardly wait to eat here.

I realize this is only a 5-star rating system, but would give them more stars if I could since Angela went above and beyond for me. I was camping in the area, but needed to work as well. The campground I was at had poor internet and cell phone coverage, so I went into town and found this little café. Angela let me work from the beautiful, quaint patio for two days using their internet connection. She checked in on me through the day to make sure I was comfortable. The food was amazing and so was the hospitality.

We've eaten here 4 or 5 times recently. I love their lunch specials, the last one we had came with tator tots which were fantastic. The lunch specials tend to be my favorite, large portions and great prices. Also try the BLT and the biscuits and gravy. We will be back soon. Enjoy!

It's ok, took Sooooo long for the food to come I forgot what I ordered. Expensive for the amount of food I got. I ordered pancakes and on the menu it said two plate sized pancakes. When it came, I actually asked if those were the children's sized pancakes. Seriously, no where near plate sized. Not worth the price paid. I very much doubt I will go back.
