Had heard great reviews of The eggs Benedict so opted for the Florentine. They didn't even poach the eggs correctly, they were basically hard-boiled nastiness.

Walked in and we were seated right away.
Waitress took our order for drinks, and being a Friday, gave us a bit to look at menu, yet it’s Friday night fish, so that’s what I ordered. Fresh salad bar, great cod fish, not overly breaded so you can taste fish. Ordered parmesean potato, and they were good too!! I gave it a 5 rating! Good service, came back often asked if we were good, needed anything, and attentive.
Food was delicious, we went at 4, so it was not the busy time. I’d go back soon!

My dad and I are in Portage this weekend for family reunion. Wanted to try out a different place to eat so we chose to go to The Hitching Post Pub and Grub. The place was phenomenal great atmosphere and very welcoming staff. Then I looked to the left of the entry way and there was a beautiful salad bar with three choices of soups. We were seated promptly and our waitress
(Danielle P. ) came over and took our orders. I wanted the one trip to salad bar so I ordered the beef tips over noodles. It was a great choice the dish came hot and noodles were perfect. My dad ordered the third rack ribs and chicken with hashbrowns and onions. It looked great. Needless to say we both brought leftovers back to hotel. Midnight snack for me. The whole time we were there our very attentive server stopped by several times to ask if we needed anything.
Danielle P. keep up the great work you are very good at what you do. Don’t change that great attitude and you will go places. We will definitely be back. Thanks Hitching Post for hiring and training your staff to the work ethics and level of commitment to their customers.

Well, can't give a review on food we never got to order. They were either busy(which they weren't) or under staffed. We left after 15 minutes of sitting at our table without having anyone come over at all. Like I said, maybe under staffed. We went for breakfast on a Wednesday morning. There were only 2 2-tops in the place, we were one of them. The restaurant was absolutely freezing. The food came out cold. I asked for over easy eggs, they were over hard. My hashbrowns were not crisp at all, not even brown, and the country fried steak gravy was ice cold. I sent it back and they barely cooked the hashbrowns again and they nuked my country fried steak with the gravy on top and it turned the breading on the steak to straight hot mush. It was absolutely disgusting. I left hungry. The only saving grace was the server who went above and beyond to cover for a crap cook.

My youngest daughter age 19 comes for a visit I haven't seen her in 5 months, we always go to The hitching Post for the spinach artichoke dip (our) favorite appetizer 💯❤️ we ordered that as an appetizer,and entre she had a shrimp wrap, and I had deep fried mushrooms.She takes a few bites into it she stops and she pulls out a piece of shrimp takes the breading off thinking taste was in the breading... She sees the black vein line (intestines). So she continued to just pull all the shrimp out and eat the wrap. Soon disgusted she just put it aside.Our server was great. She apologized and ended up taking it off the bill. And we were like they may not even know about it. If they're ordering it from a shady distributor how do they know.. so yeah you might want to follow up on that. Sad because we always have a good time when she visits and she loves the spinach artichoke dip

I tried to place a take out order, but could not get through on the phone. Apparently their voicemail box is full, and the wi-fi was down again. I decided to drive there and place the order since we really enjoy the 12 piece broasted chicken meal. After driving there they tell me that they are unsure if it is even available? Lucky for me it was. 15 minutes later I’m informed that they are out of coleslaw? Weren’t any other options but fries. Got the order home. Chicken was great, always pleased when mashed potatoes are real, but no gravy?? They never packed it. Fries were good, but the biscuits were very dry. I have yet to get good biscuits. This is a great to go order, but some of the quality has been lacking the last 6-8 months, and not getting what you order is frustrating.

Update* Tonight 2/21/25 we attempted to place an order for pick up, and once again there is no phone service. From the recent reviews I’d say the place is struggling.

Since the new owner took over she has really made this place worse. The food has gone down hill. Brenda the owner swears like a sailor in front of customers. It is not a family friendly restaurant anymore. I would avoid going here. She hired our friend and then three days later let him go because she said he was too slow to be a dishwasher. To me it sounds like she likes to judge people over their differences. Good luck. This place need to shut down.

I have been going here for years and it's always been great. The zucchini hashbrowns are my all time favorite! We went today. The service was slow, pretty sure she was new so I wasn't going to fault her to much. The hashbrowns were sour! It took awhile before she came back to check on us.... so I told her about it . she said she hadn't had any complaints so far and asked if I'd like a new batch to which I asked if it would be from the same batch and she wasn't sure. Never had a complaint about the hitching post. Awesome fish fry and steaks, but my personal favorite is the seafood chowder. Sizeable soup and salad bar are also very pleasing to see after covid did away with most of them. The soup and salad bar includes homemade hot corn fritters and honey butter as well, and I'd recommend them to anyone! The breakfast is very good as well, while being reasonably priced.

We had a very short wait to be seated with a party of 5. Then we waited 30 minutes because the wait staff didn't know who had our table. It took an hour to get our food. They did have a salad bar to tide us over. I got the prime rib special and it was barely warm by time I got it. I have been to the Hitching Post 3 times this summer. First time my husband ordered 3 piece perch dinner got a 3 piece cod dinner, second time I ordered the 3 piece cod got 3 piece perch. Tonight I ordered full rack of ribs when they came to the table they looked very good, well nope they were cold the middle felt like they just came out of the fridge. Send them by now my party was done eating. Server brought back the ribs I just told to give me a box they were still cold and I mean cold I stuck my finger in the middle. At this point I was I was done with this restaurant. Been going there for years and never had a problem but three times in a row is non acceptable

We placed our order and around 15-20 minutes later (didn't get waitress's name but older and whiskey-barrel shaped) the waitress came and asked if she should put our order in! She had ZERO BUSINESS making that judgement call to decide when I would eat. I had an appointment to get to. I cancelled my order and walked out. Think twice about eating here. From time we sat down to the time we got served food was over an hour. Food was poor quality. We all ordered breakfast items. Terrible bacon. Greasy hash browns. And everything was barely warm. Server was doing her best but it was poor planning on this establishment’s part to start a new cook on a Sunday, and the Sunday of fair week, even worse. I truly have nothing positive to say about our experience. We will never be back & wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

I would rate this 0 stars if I could. We went in Saturday morning for breakfast and left before the food because the service was so bad.

When we arrived it wasn't too busy, the waitress took about 5 minutes to get to our table and take a drink order. After bringing our drinks she took our food order, we then waited for 1 hour for our food before we got up and left. After taking our food order we never saw our waitress again.

Love this place. Was in town traveling for work. Sat at the bar and the bartender was great... attentive, friendly, and I'm a good mood. My whiskey sour was delicious. It wasn’t that good. Went in for fish fry, had to wait 30 min for a table though I could see 3 open tables that could seat my party of 2. The bussers where quite slow and seemed to be glued at the hip, always with each other. Me and my partner both ordered fish fries. The soup was cold even fresh from the salad bar, my loaded backed potato was plain and had no toppings, it also tasted a few days old. The fish fry was nice and the salad bar was fresh. Watched a few health and sanitation issues (bar tender was sticking his had straight into the olive jar with no gloves or washing of hands. A cook scratching his head and face then handle food. And another cook bite the tops off of produce then spit it into his hands and handle food.) service was Mediocre at best it seemed like 2 girls where doing it all. One server dropped a glass bowl right in front of my partner and rather then apologize she started making jokes. Over all was not impressed.

Update; ate there this evening and things have slipped a bit. Ordered ribs and BROILED shrimp, hash browns. Where to start....food was not hot, only warm, broiled shrimp didn't happen, instead breaded fried shrimp, the ribs had a hard crust on the top and meat was stringy like pulled pork gets. Every thing tasted, just ok. Things here have slipped from previous experience. Changing my rating to a 3.5

Would have given a 4.2 if that has Ben possible. The food was quite good with a fairly broad menu. Service was friendly and fast. Salad bar was a nice touch but the sliced eggs has seen much better days.
Overall, a place I would return to when looking for reasonably good food at fair prices. Enjoyed my meal.

My favorite place to go. Great food, service and well worth the wait to get in on a Friday night

Was really excited to try this place. Been passing it for years. Took my 87 year old grandma there after her cardiology appointment and wish I didn't. My 17 year old daughter was with also. Grandma got the meatloaf and mashed potatoes, she took one bite and that was it except a few bites of her mashed. She told the waitress it was the worst meal she has ever eating. Tasted her meatloaf, tasted old and the edges were burnt like it was warmed up in the microwave or an air fryer. Daughter got a chili cheese dog which she couldn't eat because the amount of onions and green peppers in her chili. Frys were old and flavorless. (Tried hers too.) She too didn't eat her meal as well. Now I had the open had the open face beef with mashed. The beef chunks were dry, over cooked and very stringy. Mashed potatoes were edible. Didn't wanna pay the bill but l we paid all in full and decided we will not be going back, Ever. Now I know why the bar area was packed and not the dining room.

The best little restaurant we’ve been to in a good while. Prices were fair, food extremely tasty, and our server attentive and small town friendly. Will definitely stop again if we find ourselves in the area again.

The food wasn't great I had to send it back but they took it off the bill and replaced it with something else as which was was more than I was expecting. The chilli was really good.

I stopped here for dinner today. It is Friday. They had a lot of options for their fish fry. They had everything from cod to walleye. I got the bluegill! It was delicious. I really liked the tarter sauce, it had large chunks of pickles in it. It came with a choice from a long list of items for a side. I got the garlic red potatoes. And the dinner came with the soup and salad bar! All for a great price of $14.99. It was a great deal! Great food and great service. I give this place two thumbs up for tonight's dinner.

First time ever going to this restaurant, decided to go on a Friday for their Friday Fish Fry. They offered a good variety of different fish to choose from cooked multiple different ways. Seating is a wait list but turn out is very quick. Our waitress was on top of her game and very helpful with any and all questions.

We had the best food and the best waitress (Lisa).We called the restaurant and Lisa gave us exact directions,because we are not from this area.She was as personable and friendly as any waitress we have ever had.Exellent salad bar and the best sea- food fettuccine.We will be back as soon as we get through that area again.Best regards,Clarence and Bill

The Hitching Post is a nice down-to-earth diner that has not only your usual breakfast and lunch fixin’s but also some unique options that add a little variety to more adventurous eaters. When I was there, I grabbed the Oscar’s Omelette; a Crab Meat and Asparagus Omelette with Mozzarella Cheese and topped with Hollandaise sauce; A tasty subtle savory breakfast that I quite enjoyed in the morning. For those not super adventurous or indecisive they have a nice breakfast buffet. Tons of seating space. Very homely, even when it’s busy. I definitely recommend the Hitching Post next time you find yourself in Portage!
