Heard great things about this place, so we made a 25 min trip through downtown just to check it out. Online hours listed they were open until 9 PM, but when we arrived at 7 PM on a Saturday, we were told they were closed. Even the parking lot sign still said “open.” Really disappointing and frustrating that the early closure wasn’t updated online or on their socials—especially as we saw several other cars pulling in as we left.

My first time here, per recommendation from friends who brought me here. Loved the atmosphere, we ate outside as it was a beautiful 75 and sunny. I ordered the seafood roll. it had about 8 shrimp and snow crab in it. It was $24 and the french fries I ordered with it were your standard thin cut. No surprises there. Food came out hot.
Very quick service, and I loved the setting, hence the 5 stars for those. But 4 stars for the meal because of the price. Yes, I could've ordered something cheaper, but I'll be back.

I call this place the SpongeBob restaurant! Such a fun very hidden gem for a casual meal on a nice day. The grouper poboy is the way to go. But for all things holy, clean the bathrooms! Fun place to feel like you are on vacation while in Milwaukee. Menu has mostly seafood but we also tried a cheeseburger which was good. I had the cod fish fry which was good and not too large. Fish came out hot and fresh. Coleslaw was actually good (I have had a few bad ones lately from other restaurants) and I love skinny fries. Family had seafood roll and hamburger, which they liked. Overall good food but the ice water tasted bad. I am a fan of Milwaukee tap water, but they must have rusty pipes or something because there was a bad taste to the water. I mentioned it to the waitress. Soda $3. Went in late August 2025. Pretty sunset over KK river around 7:30pm.

Visiting is a strange (and rewarding) experience. As you get closer, you will start to wonder if you are really going the right direction or if you are completely lost. Then you will get to a parking lot where it says you have arrived and there are signs indicating where the restaurant is. Then after you walk in, you are transported next to the river to a great "pub-style" seafood experience. The food is solid and the atmosphere is enjoyable. Definitely worth visiting.

DON'T go there with a big party. They won't have a table large enough for you.

DON'T go there if you want to enjoy your visit. There's a 2 hour table limit. No matter what size your party or what day of the week (we were there on a Monday) or how long the service takes or even if you're still spending money & buying drinks = 2 hour table limit. Kicked us out mid drink, so rude! We tried to ask for some extra time since we had a group of over 20 people & the food took so long but no. The waitress blamed that on the small kitchen. (Isn't that nice of her)

Barnacle Buds has been in my rotation for years, but that is going to end after my annual 2025 visit. The atmosphere is still great with good views along the harbor.

Atmosphere alone doesn't make up for continued increases in prices and continued declining food quality. I ordered my standard Grouper Reuben and it came out looking the same as usual. After my first bite, it tasted like something was off and I opened up the sandwich to take a look. There was barely a hint of thousand island, maybe an oz slaw, and maybe half a slice of cheese. The fish was bland and had no seasoning. I wouldn't order this again if this is the new quality standard for this item.

For a side I went with Fries which are usually crinkle fries. This time they were shoestring fries that came out undercooked, soggy, and had no seasoning. On top of the food quality the sandwich is up to $19. Not worth it at this quality.

Others in my group also had similar quality comments about food not being up to prior visit standards, especially the new "seafood roll" which replaced the lobster roll, at an increased price on top. It tasted like imitation crab.

Overall, another once great institution skimping on quality to protect the bottom line. Oh yeah, and they can't split checks higher than 4 ways and they also slap you with a 3% credit card fee, so be prepared for a difficult check out with a large group which we had.

You walk behind the warehouse and find a very lighthearted environment with an interesting menu and great service. Note -- it is outside seating (entirely?) So perhaps best saved for a sunny day. Don't be fooled by the parking lot - if you make it all the way past the gate and into the restaurant you'll be rewarded with great atmosphere, awesome drinks, and fantastic seafood! While the menu is a little confusing and could maybe use some updating/reformatting, the food itself is awesome.

Most of us partook in the build your own bloody Mary bar and it was worth every penny. (Pro tip - take an extra cup and load it up with garnishes and assemble back at your table!)

All of our food came out quickly which was awesome since we had such a big party. My coconut shrimp were fantastic and I can't wait to go back and get them again. It was nice that there were a few non-seafood options available as well so there's something for everyone.

And if you're cruising down the river you can pull your boat up to Barnacle Bud's and grab some drinks to go too!

This is a place not ment for disabled people. Me myself and my daughter. If your in a wheelchair forget it, you have a maybe 2ft in the fence opening to get in. Oh and cheese curds 90 % of them where just breading. Cheese melted out of the hole in the breading. And the cod fish fry wow came from a frozen Tyson bag. The 1 and only thing that made us smile was the baby birds that I fed my French fries to.

Barnacle Bud’s was one of the best places to go out to eat at especially during summer. The atmosphere is so awesome! I have known Geno for over 36 years. He use to sponsor our bowling team. Unfortunately the quality of the food has gone down. My fish fry tasted like they have been reusing the same oil for months & the service was terrible. I came with a large group of people so it took awhile to get our food which is understandable. We finished our food and 3/4 of our group left the restaurant. Before we could finish our drinks we were told that we had to leave, that there was a 2 hour limit. There were multiple tables open and not enough room at the bar! What poor customer service. Was once a loyal customer but not no more.

We've known Gene for over 30 years we've come to this restaurant for years... Well this year will be our last. We came in with somewhat of a family reunion 21 people 4 picnic tables set up ordered plenty of drinks all ate. Took over an hour to get our food which was understandable but as soon as we paid our bill bam you have to leave it was Monday and it was not busy nobody was waiting for a table even half our party left. So now we were down to one table ordering drinks sitting talking ect. Getting mean mugged by the hostess and the waitress/manager..... Saying you can leave now 😳. Food and service has really gone down in quality and there's many other places to eat! Two hour limit really ... You'd rather have no business then some business. This is bad management steer clear of this place two hour maximun whether you're one to 20 people. A couple of us were from out of state so much for customer hospitality. We usually meet at barnacle buds every year when family comes to visit this was the last time. While finishing our drinks after dinner we were told to leave. There’s a 2 hour limit at the table. We came with 20+ people and it took a while to get the food. We originally had 4 tables for all the people but as they started to leave it opened 2 of the tables. Then they told us we had to leave. Never have I ever been told to leave a bar/restaurant while having a drink. None of our party will ever return and make sure everyone knows how this waitstaff treats customers. FYI no one ever sat in the other 2 tables.

I have been coming to Barnacle Buds for the last 5 years after finding out about the local dive from a coworker. Until recently, I've never had a poor experience there. Cheap but strong drinks, great service and an even better atmosphere. My partner and I love bringing "out-of-towners" to this place, and have never left disappointed. This past week we brought my sister. There was a party going on so the service was definitely focused on the private event. However, our server never asked us for water refills. When they did stop at our table, it was brief and felt distracted. They also took my food before I was finished (hands were on my plate before I could say stop). Also, the food was disappointing. I've had the shrimp po-boy so many times and loved it. But this time, my shrimp was underdone and the sandwich lacked toppings as the bun was a large percentage of what I was eating. My sister ordered the surf&turf. Her shrimp were great, but the steak..terrible. She ordered it medium and it was rare, borderline wanting to send it back. It was also lacking any form of seasoning including salt. The asparagus and potatoes were also lacking in seasoning. What a waste of $30. My partner's grouper tacos were good so that was the only redeeming plate of food. Even our order of fries to share were cold and under-seasoned. I'm hoping this was a one off experience, but I couldn't help notice that the menu has become smaller with less options offered. So, shouldn't the food they're offering stand out more? I will be back to give them another shot as I love the location and vibes, but hoping this isn't the norm for Barnie's in the future.

The outside patio is perfect on a sunny summer day and definitely a great spot to enjoy nice weather. The wings are very good. The first time I came here about two years ago, I ordered the lobster roll and really enjoyed it. I came back hoping to get it again, but it’s no longer on the menu. Instead, they now offer a seafood sandwich made with crab salad and shrimp. I gave it a try, but unfortunately, it wasn’t very good. I only took about three bites and ended up just eating the fries.

My boyfriend ordered the grouper Reuben, but they mistakenly brought him a regular grouper sandwich instead. They did comp it, which we appreciated, but the sandwich itself wasn’t very good either.

Dined today with the good weather. We frequented this place last summer. Today was pretty disappointing. The server didn’t know anything about the menu. I asked what the burger sauce was on the big gene burger and she didn’t know (I have an egg intolerance so anything mayo based doesn’t sit right in my stomach) I asked her to put it on the side. I also asked for grilled onions. The burger came covered in sauce with raw onions. Bartenders provide great service. Edel is our favorite! Love coming here on beautiful, sunny days or on any summer day. The view and ambiance are great every time! Definitely a staple in Milwaukee! If you haven't been here yet, put it on your list of places to visit! You will surely come back.

Great atmosphere. Arrived at just the right time. The sun was shining, there was a nice breeze, and the voice was amazing.

One of those places you just have to hit when ever in Milwaukee! Great food, setting, and service. Barnacle Buds is a gem. While all the food is delicious, the muscles are great, and I can’t recommend the crab car sandwich and lobster roll enough!

This was definitely ducked off. The food was tasty and we all enjoyed it. Unfortunately, it was a rainy day, so it was drafty and muddy getting into the restaurant. I wish there were a bit more shrimp options as well. The fish I had was Swai.
