We go there often and last week didn't have any issues or before. The food is great but today the Customer Service was another story. I took my mother-in-law and girls out shopping and we grab lunch there. The girls ordered guacamole & Chip and quesadilla. While we got all our food. The girls guacamole never came. We even reordered some quesadilla and still nothing. I had asked our waiter about it and she said she will check if it isn’t ready in a few mins. That never happened, after waiting awhile I asked 2 other waiters who said the same thing. We sat near the bar and our waiter back was toward me (several times) I called her but no answer until the bar tender told her (because it was very clear I was calling her). She said she will check (same thing she said in the beginning) and I told her this is the 4th time I asked about it -very nicely and our food is done. The lady (who worked at the front) happened to go in back with our waiter to check. When the guacamole and chips came (which took a long time) our girls didn't want it anymore. We paid for the whole meal and tipped. There were no apologies or thank you after we left. Horrible Customer Service.

Really enjoyed my visit to bartaco at Hilldale! The Baja fish taco was light, crispy, and flavorful, and the Korean BBQ ribeye rice bowl was delicious and satisfying. This place is pretty fantastic! The atmosphere is nice and on a lovely day there is outdoor seating if desired. Let’s get to the service— Jason N was nothing short of exceptional! There was a dietary restriction card that was immensely helpful! From suggestions to answering every question I had the service was fantastic. The food? Flavors blended so well and some unusual combinations just melded beautifully. The guac is creamy, not a “generic” recipe and did not disappoint. The cauliflower taco— fantastic! Verde salsa was a little hit for me but I’m sure for most would be perfect. Love the full round tortillas instead of chips! And let’s not forget the plantains… absolute win! Perfectly sweet, salty, and a little bit of heat— what?! Pure love. I would drive here to have a margarita and the plantains alone. Just try this place and it is not going to disappoint in my opinion. Great location as well.

Imagine not just needing to use a QR to order but then needing to input your phone number then getting a code by text then entering that code into the ordering page then having to click ok more times than you'd expect to. A decent spot for a casual dinner and a drink. The service model is nontraditional, you’ll fill out a card with your order or order through their website online at the table. We started with the guac and street corn— both pretty good! I got the chicken verde bowl and my partner got an assortment of tacos. Beware of the chilli markers for spicy dishes!! My partner loves spice and it was too much to handle.

Overall, the food menu is underwhelming but the drinks are pretty great. If I go back, it would be for a drink and chips on the patio but there’s much better options in the Madison area, in my opinion.

I wanted to love this place, it was very good. The prices aren’t horrible but they charged us $3.20 for 4 corn tortillas. I find that insane.

Also one of our Baja fish tacos were disproportionately sized which made for a very complicated decision between my fiancé and I. I let her make the decision and she sacrificed herself for me.

The ceviche was good not great, not a lot of fish but had good flavor and heat. The half chicken should be served with tortillas, as that’s the common practice imo.

The staff was super nice and we spoke of cats. 🐱

I love bar taco and have come many times but this last time we came to celebrate a coworkers retirement and the host was very nice, but the service wasn’t very good. My coworker decided to treat themselves with a soda and asked for a cup with ice and she came back 3 times to check in but forgot the ice cup which was fine, I know that happens but then when she came around again I said ‘excuse me, could we get more chips and the ice cup? I asked because we had asked two times before that and she responded to me with ‘yeah I was getting that’ and then she came back with chips but not the ice cup. So we waited a bit more and then she passed us a few more times, so we went and asked another server at the counter. I still tipped assuming she was stressed or overwhelmed but I just left feeling like we were a bother and she didn’t like us? It just put a damper on the celebration. :(

Bar Tacos are hands-down the best tacos I’ve found in Madison. The flavors are absolutely amazing—bold, fresh, and layered in a way that sets them apart. One standout is the subtle yet distinct hint of “coriander” in the tacos, which adds a unique twist you won’t find elsewhere.

The ambience is vibrant and welcoming, making it a great place to relax and enjoy a meal. That said, be prepared for a wait on weekends, it gets very busy. But trust me, the wait is worth it.

This was my 2nd success @ Bartaco. They have a barcode for you to scan on your phone and view and purchase food electronically. This time going, this option was not working. No problem! They have a paper form for you to fill out your name and what you want to order. I ordered the Korean BBQ Rice bowl, steak tacos, and esquites. Everything was phenomenal, as well as my server. He was wonderful and very sweet and caring. Obviously, it was busy Friday, and the wait time was 45 minutes. I recommend adding yourself to the waitlist in person ahead of time if need be. If you have time to spare, there are quite a few shops around to distract yourself from the hunger.
The prices are a bit higher for margaritas for their size… but overall, 100/10.

Amazing customer service, people were extremely nice and friendly. Food was good and had excellent choices for vegan and gluten free, allergy friendly menu items. Not super expensive either, which is a huge plus so I can come here more regularly.

Only leaving 4 stars because of the water having salt/minerals* and they had to remake my friend’s vegan tacos. Also would add that my mocktail was mostly ice… They were really good about providing allergen free laminated menus with notes.

*Suggestion to restaurant, I know other people have commented about the water. It probably would have been a 5 stars if not for water quality. It just was a gritty tap like taste.

Was in town on April 10th due to having my twins in the NICU and after a long day at the hospital we found this spot. Walked in and the host and hostess were so nice and personable! They found out I had a C-section the week prior and they found a table for me and my party super fast. The hostess then came by a little later and gifted me the 2 cutest onesies!
The tacos are street style. My favorite was the pork belly! The trio was delicious and the only complaint was I couldn’t eat more once I was done! Highly recommend this place for college students or anyone looking for good food!

This was my first time at this restaurant. We went during lunch time. My sister told me about this place and that I had to try the food there. We ordered guac and chips, street corn (you can decide how spicy you want it by adding the spice to it), warm buttered lobster taco, Baja fish taco, glazed pork belly taco, and seared chorizo. For the final touch, we all shared the key lime pie dessert. Everything was very delicious. I would go back there again. Per person or per female depending on how hungry you are, I would say three tacos with appetizers. Without appetizers then six tacos per female. The only down fall was the price since these tacos are very small. I would go back there again.

Overall the food is really solid, but there some items better than others. General rule of thumb, any seafood options are fantastic as well as their duck options.

Must order items: Duck Birria, Duck Taco, shrimp taco, fish taco, tuna lettuce wrap taco. Also their Guac is really good, seasoned well and has a nice flavor. For the salsa we prefer the Green (Verde) option over the Rojas.

Service is really fast and it’s easy to order via their online system. Overall this is a great option for the hilldale area. Tip - tequila selection is really good too, usually have Fortaleza available!

The food was really good, but the process of ordering for a larger group was incredibly complicated. I had to learn the job of the waiter and then do all the work myself. I ended up paying three different ways. My group spent a considerable amount of time trying to get our order in. If they just would have the waiter take our order, it would have been a much simpler process. I'm not sure why I need to tip when I did most of our waiter's job other than bring the food out. Everybody got their food at different times. Some of us didn't get their food until others had already finished their meals. That was entirely due to an insanely complicated ordering process. When I want to use the bathroom, they have all the paper towels stacked up so everyone's dripping hands drips down on the pile of paper towels. They had this large wicker basket that you had to lift up to dispose of your paper towels. There's no real way to get out of the bathroom without touching something that others have touched. Also, when they brought out the chips, guac, and salsa, we got the equivalent of about 8 chips. I'm not sure how I was supposed to eat the guac and salsa.

I think for the price of the margaritas, you’re better off sticking to non-alcoholic drinks then maybe having a follow-up cocktail at another lounge. $13, in my opinion, not worth it. Tacos were very good and unique! The people were all very nice. We had a large group and used the QR code to order per their suggestion, it asks for your name when making your order but they come out and name off the tacos on the plate instead of using the name of the person that ordered. That caused some confusion and frustration. Seems easier to say the person of the order. Probably more fun with a smaller group gathering. Also the music is very loud. Otherwise a good vibe. The Tacos were small and good, especially the pork belly. Shrimp and fish weren't my favorite and the actual corn tortilla was kind of cold and smaller than even regular small autentico tacos. The three small tostada appetizer we actually quite good. The sweet corn fritters were terrible and basically all salt, so I would definitely start away. The plantain was overdone.

The wait times are pretty wild though 45 to 90 minutes. So I would recommend joining the online would 30 mins before you intend to be seated. There's no advanced reservations.

I know I sound critical but I'm pretty generous with my reviews and I'd say the speed of service along with it's seamlessness, and the ambience/location does give it extra points.

We stopped into Bartaco in Madison on a very tough day (Jan. 1) driving home from the Mayo Clinic. Freezing cold outside and the staff was quick to invite us to sit by the beautiful fire and even offered to bring me a blanket. I had the fish taco and the glazed pork belly taco and my husband had 4 assorted tacos, each better than the last, and a fabulous little cucumber salad, and maybe the best cup of French Press coffee I've ever had. The manager (Miranda?) took care of us and all in all we could not have had a nicer experience. In our multi-state drives to the Mayo, this is a bit out of our way, but we will make returning a priority.

My family and I have dined here three or four times, and we particularly enjoy the tacos, especially the lobster ones when they’re in season.

Joined the waitlist and quickly got called to our table . Menu is easy to go through with many interesting taco options. We started with a guacamole and chips which was well prepared and presented. Taco choices were glazed pork belly , sesame ribeye , Baja fish and roasted duck . All were astounding! Great flavors and unique twists .

Service was okay but despite being a less than busy evening it felt a little rushed . Nevertheless it was all okay .

The parking at Hilldale is very easy and straightforward!

The tacos were good. but the service was a little slow. we had to wait a long time for our check. Worst of all was the music. we asked our server if there were any outside tables away from the speakers. short answer was, No. she then offered to see if they might be able to turn the music down. but the volume never decreased while we were there. it really ruined our dining experience. the bass was so loud and heavy it made our heads hurt. this was very unfortunate, as we really like the food there.

This is my first time visiting Milwaukee and my friend lives in Milwaukee for over 20 years. She is so in love with bartacos she would drive an hour from Milwaukee to Madison just for the tacos. She took me and her neighbor today and we ordered pork belly, duck, fish, falafel, and shrimp tacos. Also, Chip with salsas and cocktail / beers.Every dish is excellent. The best tacos ever! Usually, no issues. On the weekend, a wait is anticipated. However, recently, on both Friday and Saturday, we came later in the evening (party of 3), between 7-9pm, after checking in on the waitlist online (6:49pm), and was told it was going to be a 90 min wait. On check in (7:11pm), and when coming back later, (8:35 pm) there were several unoccupied tables (counted at least 9 open tables), and we were told another 10-15 min. It was OVER 2 hours from online check in to being sat at a table. I swear I am not a ‘boomer Karen’, but this is just crazy.

We eventually were sat next to the dead plants full of garbage.
After ordering, drinks were bought promptly, and while technically one was wrong, they were quick to correct it. Food was fast to come out, but compared to previous visits, mediocre.
Corn fritters were great, mushroom taco okay, Baja fish okay, cauliflower “tasted like charcoal”, duck taco “didn’t taste like duck” (didn’t realize it was the duck taco until discerning the other tacos ordered), street corn side was bland.
A truly disappointing experience after so many previous great ones.

Awesome place. Super busy on the weekends. Tacos are amazing, the corn and pineapple sides are each ESPECIALLY good. Gluten free options were very clearly marked with lots of options and safety precautions taken. Wonderful experience overall - just call/sign up online ahead if you’re really pinched for time, or the bar is full food service as well so you can sometimes get a seat there.

I had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. The service was extremely poor, starting with the lack of a host to assign tables upon arrival. Despite observing more than 10 empty tables, I decided to seat myself. I've eaten here twice now. I think concept is great for casual, tasty tacos. Some are better than others. If you are looking for spicy, remember you are in WI, and order some salsa and hot sauce. The shrimp taco is probably the spiciest. The flavors of everything are good just not as spicy as you would hope-- especially if you grew up eating Texican. The mushroom, cauliflower, and falafel tacos were good. The corn fritters are amazing. Spicy cucumber salad was good- not as spicy as you expect. Good variety of non alcoholic beverages as well as regular adult beverages. I appreciate the variety on the kids menu. Found a seat at the bar with no wait and food took about 10 min. I always have a great time at BarTaco. I've visited locations all over the US. I stopped in after a long travel day for a work trip at the Hilldale Madison location and had, as expected, an excellent dinner and cocktails. I was greeted and taken care of by both Dren and Alondra. Both very friendly and attentive. Alondra was really informative and pointed out some great menu options. Dren shared his tequila knowledge with me and we explored a few different tequila options and talked about some other high end, off menu, tequilas that he thought would be of interest to me! Per usual, my food was prepared perfectly and the freshly squeezed and prepared cocktails hit the spot after an exhausting day! Will definitely be back when I visit Madison again! Thank you Dren and Alondra!

I did not like the ordering using a QR code and ordering on phone. It was difficult and annoying trying to put card number in to pay. If you don't want to serve people or take their card maybe you don't need to be a restaurant. Lowest tip amount that we could see was 18% which we paid but what are you getting money for? You didn't take our order or take our payment you only dropped food and never gave a second thought. If this is the future of dinning out I will take a pass. If the food were better might have overlooked some of this but food was not great(or all that good). The meat in the pork taco was so hard on edges I thought I had a piece of bone in taco and since the waitress was MIA I just gave up.

My experience at Bartaco was great, and it was because of the people working there.
There was quite a wait for our tanle. We signed in online, but there were still a lot of reservations ahead of us. It wasn't an issue, though. The host pointed us to the high tops which were open seating and we found a table there. He was the first great employee we met!. At the high top, Lexie greeted us. She was awesome! She was busy and working hard and STILL made a point of being kind and friendly. I made a point of writing this review in large part because of what a good job she did. Pretty soon we were seated at another table. At that table, Jacob served us. He was great and made our dining experience really enioyable. Finally, Bella, a manager, who I only met so I could get change for the tip, had a great attitude about her work and was very kind.
Overall, the food was really good, but the people in the reataurant were stellar! Will be coming back and bringing friends!

If you haven't been to Bar Taco... RUN! Raiza, Sara and Mario are the incredible bartenders and will bake the best craft cocktails in the area. Chef Ryan is also amazing. All of the food is top notch using all fresh ingredients. THE BEST.

I'm not a fan of the oyster tacos, but thr baha fish tacos are mind-blowing. The vibe is chill, even when it's busy (it's always busy). Book a Reservation because it's hard to get a table. Madison got it right with this one. The place is as beautiful as the food is delicious.

I hate to leave a poor review, but I was very frustrated by my experience today. I placed an order to-go at 1:32pm and they stated the order would be ready for pickup at 2:02pm. 30 minutes for a few tacos is already unreasonable but, okay. My order wasn’t actually ready until 2:20pm. We left the restaurant and immediately went down the street to Metcalfe’s parking lot to eat our food. It was already cold, the meat was dry, and three of our tacos went uneaten because they weren’t enjoyable at all. I don’t think I’ll be back.

타코가 맛있는데 일반적인 타코보다 작아서 많이 시켜야한다. 폰을 이용해서 계속 주문을 추가할수 있다는게 웨이터 기다리는것보다 편하고 재밌었다. 타코 종류도 다양하다. 아내는 랍스터타코를 기어코 먹었는데 비싸지만 아주 맛있다고 했다. 야외에는 강아지도 가능하고 천장에 히터도 달려있어 따뜻하다. 가격대가 좀 있다.

Went there tonight to grab a quick meal with my young son. We needed to leave within 40 minutes. Walked up and saw they were at less than half capacity and was told there was going to be a 20 minute wait. When I brought up their capacity, there were several open seats for two people even outside in the front I was told the wait was due to a ‘large party.’ Hostess seemed very pretentious. Got seated right away at another restaurant right around the corner with roughly the same amount of customers.

Absolutely wonderful food. Mojito, one of the best. Chicken Tortilla Soup - again one of the best I have had. Fish taco - yummy. Service great but music - even outside- is too loud and they were not able to turn it down a tad because "that's the Bartaco way - the party vibe" ???!!! No need for "party vibe" at a restaurant! The great food should be the goal and they delivered on that! No need to distract from that with the THUMP THUMP THUMP!!!

Wow — What a neat tasting experience bartaco creates for their guests! Reasonably priced tacos, portioned perfectly to allow the opportunity for guest to taste a variety of menu items. Their online ordering system is designed to give guests the flexibility to purchase additional items as they saw fit! Really liked the sesame ribeye taco and want another? Sounds good! Add it to your digital tab! Don’t sleep on the guacamole; it was so simple, yet a flavorful bit. If you’re looking for a palate cleanser, the caipirinha was a well crafted cocktail.

Absolutely great food! First time visiting and will surely return. Food was fresh and came quickly upon ordering. We were properly instructed on the ordering process and should not be of any difficulty for anyone. Even though we had a few “first timer” questions our server was more than willing to go through and explain everything to us. She was absolutely patient with us which helped as well. Fresh fruits are used in the cocktails which is a rarity for most businesses. They offer numerous healthy options and the ability to deeply customize your meal to your specific liking. The dining atmosphere gives off this beachside California vibe. Really chill place, clean establishment, and friendly staff!

Great lunch experience. You order based on a QR code menu. We ordered Street Corn Fritters for an appetizer. Main was two Lobster, two Duck, one Chorizo and one Cauliflower taco. We were told the Lobster taco was from their secret menu. To drink, a Pomegranate Limonata. Nothing here was a disappointment. The Corn Fritters were really good. I expected some more cakey. These Fritters oozed a nice cheesy bite!
Food tasted fresh. The in- house made tortillas were delicious. The tacos are smaller (4") but this was just right for lunch.
Service was great and friendly. We sat outside to enjoy the weather, but the inside atmosphere had a nice vibe.
We will definitely come back for more!

I've been to bartaco quite a few times, and the food is absolutely delicious. Lately, there have been a few hiccups with the service (frequently forgetting items, forgetting about waiting parties when the wait time is long) However the management at this place is absolutely amazing with how they handle these things that can inevitably happen. Every employee I've come across who works here is always willing to help with their online ordering system if need be, very polite and the overall atmosphere is fantastic. Would recommend.

So i wanted to like this place until the ordering experience. Doing everything on the web is so frustrating & having things set up for one tab on the website was so hard to do. Especially since my friend was broke & still had to enter my credit card on her phone when ordering for her. Not to mention that gratuity was automatically added to the check when the server only saw us once. What am i tipping? Tipping culture is getting out of hand & servers just expect it now, but if i get bad service, no ice for my drink & a terrible ordering experience im not tipping. So i have to issue a chargeback with my bank because i didn’t receive the service for the price i paid. Ditch the web ordering. Its not faster & more of a pita than anything.

not a true restaurant experience in my personal opinion. I personally enjoy the interaction with servers as a patron, because I typically eat out alone, but there’s almost no interaction with any server here. you scan a QR code and order online or fill out a sheet. a server doesn’t take your order at any point. the tiny paper menus also don’t include much description (if at all) of any of the menu items.

drinks were alright, food was mediocre. small portions for such high prices. my tortillas all fell apart super easily. whatever it is that comes with the guac tastes rather cheap.

the server who initially greeted me was great. gave me recommendations on the menu and told me how everything worked, but I only saw her once after that. 3 others besides the initial lady served me. however, some of them were slow. when my food came out I asked for a couple more lime wedges for my tacos, but the limes came out 10+ minutes later when I had already eaten 3 of my 4 tacos.

my favorite thing I had was the secret taco (fried squash blossom). my 2nd margarita was great — I changed the tequila out. I wouldn’t not recommend this place to others (I would definitely warn people of the fact everything is online), but I won’t be back. I have a hard time tipping 20% when the “servers” are doing very minimal work.
