Such a lovely restaurant. Beautiful, airy interior. Although the tables felt somewhat close to each other, the high ceilings still make it feel spacious. I also like that there's a little shopping area in the front.

The food was great, including some inventive dishes, and our server was knowledgable and accommodating. One of our friends had a nut allergy and she didn't make a big deal of it at all and ordered what she could, but since quite a few things on their menu included nuts, the restaurant was so kind in giving her one of the nut-free appetizers on the house for her to enjoy. I thought that was such a kind gesture that they didn't even have to do and my friend greatly appreciated it.

The apple and beet salad was great, but our sandwiches were not good. The roast beef was cold, the cheese not melted, and the roasted cherry tomatoes were made into a sweet ketchup like sauce that did not work well with the horseradish sauce. Bread was stiff.

Chef choice charcuterie was fantastic! I loved the honey spread and homemade crackers. The roasted carrot salad was very well balanced, the prunes with pistachios with baba ghanoush! The steak sandwich had a lot of flavors competing for first, the steak had a heavy char which did taste bitter.

The latte was awesome, I didn’t even add sugar.

Incredibly rude service bordering on racist. Plenty of tables open, but hosts made a huge fuss about reservations, sat in the worst table, and service was very slow. Others were seated no issue: Notably only one of the few black people in the restaurant. Disappointing as this looked like there was great food and a fun concept but would recommend staying away if you’re a person of color.

We have dined at Bavette LB for 10 years, although less often now since we are seasonal residents. Bavette has been amazingly consistent in providing a great dining experience all those years.
In an era when chefs are frantically creating concoctions that often fall short on culinary merit, Karen Bell's dishes combine unexpected ingredients that truly elevate the dish and flavor profile. I tried the chicken curry soup this evening and found myself lingering over each spoonful. Every aspect of the soup, from the stock to the many layers of flavors and textures, said this is special. Really, who puts such seriousness into a cup of soup? It restored my faith that unexpected pleasures are still possible when dining out. Many thanks.

Came for dinner before Summerfest on a Friday evening. Best dinner we've had in a while, everything was fantastic. Great and fast service. The cocktails were very well done (Rosa Dame and The People's Choice) and the food was SO delicious (grilled corn bread, salt cod croquettes, and Korean steak au jus with beef fat fries and remoulade). We split those three dishes among two of us and were very full at the end.

We enjoyed Bavette's on a Friday for lunch.
While not completely packed, they were enjoying a brisk business and rotating tables.
That said, we never felt rushed or as if we had to wait for our orders to arrive.
Our server was attentive but not hovering.
We enjoyed a couple of their cocktail specials, the current old fashioned and a classic aperol spritz, before diving into a delicious pimento cheese appetizer.
We've had a lot of pimento cheese over the years and the Bavette's offering was one of the best. Simple, but they clearly use a high quality and flavorful cheese which made all the difference.
In addition to that, the toast points were well toasted and crispy/crunchy, balancing the creaminess of the cheese spread well.

We enjoyed the snap pea and beet salad and the riff on a Cuban sandwich.

The salad was extremely bright and fresh with a lovely dressing that highlighted but didn't hide the flavor of the veggies.

The Cuban consisted of great crusty bread with a little cheese, ham and bacon.
The bread almost shattered when bitten into, which I personally like.
The ham was savory and the bacon added a nice flavor without overwhelming with salt.

The atmosphere was casual but everyone was professional and clearly knew the menu and their role. We sat by the open kitchen and watched the team approach to getting orders to tables, while oggling dishes we wished we had also ordered.

Next time we're in Milwaukee, I'm sure you will be able to find us at Bavette's.
We'll be back

Just came up a little shy of expectations.
Staff super great. Waitlist for bar seating great, texted on time. Everyone was friendly and relaxed.
Seating at bar had a pole such that the staff couldn’t consistently talk to us from one side or the other, with a dishes station in front of us. The stools at the bar do not slide on the floor which makes them a bit unwieldy.

Food mostly came up short
Hamachi crudo, four thin pieces for $24, had too much going on and it overpowered the fish itself
Lions mane schnitzel very creative, couldn’t remember all the ingredients and probably missed some notable notes as a result. One of us didn’t like the texture.
Pate grandmere needed salt or something, we had higher hopes when told it was house-made. Very one-note. Pickles served with it were fantastic, detected some unusual pickling spices.
Maybe we didn’t get the dishes that best showcased the chef talent. We loved the atmosphere and the drinks were solid. I would try again when we are on our next Milwaukee run.

There is a reason that this place is highly rated! The food was very good with plenty of flavors and the service was also great. A little more pricey but it was worth it! Honestly some of the best food in Milwaukee that I have enjoyed. Steak, pork croquette, chicken sandwich was all great flavors! Only down side is no parking anywhere on a Saturday! Can’t control that.

We really wanted to love this cozy restaurant, but our initial delighted impression turned sour with an excessively expensive wine by the glass list, which didn’t compare to the small servings (particularly for Milwaukee). The food read as innovative but didn’t reflect the reality, nor price. Not at all value for money. Sad, because it’s such a charming space.

Atmosphere is nice; exposed brick and wood beams give the space a look that's familiar in Milwaukee but authentic. The restaurant space is chilly, though. My date and I were both wearing pants and sweaters and we were still very cold. We were even seated next to the kitchen away from the doors, where I assume it's warmer. Most of the dishes were delicious but there were a couple of misses. The carpaccio could have used a little more acid, and was too heavy on the arugula, which made it too bitter and threw off the balance. The crudo was tasty but was topped with an odd shaved ice brine that gave the whole dish an unpleasant texture. Our main courses and desserts were a home run. We ordered their take on a Banh Mi sandwich and a scallop gnocchi dish. Espresso bread pudding for dessert. Service was excellent. Our server was friendly, attentive, but not too cloying.

I am not a rich person. This place for me was a once in a year experience as part of an anniversary trip with my girlfriend. Service is hard to gauge as it’s very “on a servers basis” but we were greeted emphatically and our waitress just didn’t give us any more attention than necessary. The food was good…. But when I’m paying those kinds of prices I expected something at the very least VERY good. I got the scallop gnocchi and my girlfriend the 15 ounce steak. The steak was perfectly cooked but there was no oomph behind it. My scallop gnocchi was good, that’s unfortunately all I can say about it as I’m writing this review a couple days later and can’t recall much of it at all. Dessert was also very meh, the brown sugar cookie was pretty good but the chocolate chip potato chip cookie was very “…” Overall, if this place is going to be a special celebration I’d recommend elsewhere. Just didn’t live up to expectations but credit where credit was due, the food was very fresh and tasted good as I said, just no wow factor.

If it were possible, I would give Bavette 4.5 stars as I enjoyed my meal more than my spouse did. Lunch was the last time we ate at Bavette, and our meal was disappointingly mediocre. Our sandwiches and soup were unmemorable, and our server was snippy. We did not have fun. This time, on a blindingly cold night on a Saturday in January, the joint was jumping, and Bavette had a buzz. Our friend procured an awkward four-top close to the front, but that was probably because we were twenty minutes late due to our Uber driver getting lost and the two prior Uber cancellations. Milwaukee's ride-share programs need work. The most surprising dish of the night was the chicken liver mousse. Looking and tasting more like dessert, I have never tasted a more delicious liver mousse. Duck confit was pleasant, but without the crispness of the skin that is my preference. My fries were done well, extra crispy and no salt. However, my partner's scallops were too sweet and any scallop flavor disappeared beneath the sauce. Cocktails were weak and not given much thought, decidedly unMilwaukee. A highlight of the night was our pleasant and vivacious server, who handled the four of us with a smile and intelligence.
Bavette is interesting. I spend most of my time in Bay View, and the Third Ward seems like a different city. Milwaukee is definitely neighborhood-driven. The crowd at Bavette was more conservative, buttoned down, lacking the funk and eclecticism of Bay View. I felt out of place. That's weird, but there are distinct differences between the Third Ward, its twin Walker's Point and Bay View. I'll take my hood hands down.

Was there for the first time last night. Food and atmosphere were top notch. Cocktails were fantastic too. I feel like often places like this are great in the kitchen but weak from the bar -- not the case here. Everything exceeded expectations. Everything from the moment you walk in the door, is sheer perfection. Our server, Connor, was knowledgeable and ridiculously articulate about the food, that we gave him carte blanche in what came out, which did not disappoint. The cocktails, carpaccio, octopus, pasta and sammy left us satisfied yet the housemade butterscotch pudding set us over the edge of delight. Thank you, Connor and Bavette, for the most memorable dinner I've had in long time.

I don’t have anything to complain about this place! The price is definitely not cheaper side but everything we ordered was very good! We ordered 3 different appetizers! And I got sweet&spicy fried chicken sandwich. I liked their buns! I’m glad they don’t use buns that look like they just grabbed from Walmart because I feel like some restaurants use those if you know what I mean. The lemonade was delicious! I think they actually put some freshly squeezed lemon because it was a little tart and it was awesome! The server was very nice and friendly! The restaurant has got a small sign over a small gate in the busy Historic 3Rd Ward on Broadway, looks more like a shop than a restaurant. After getting off from the HOP, I actually walked past it without noticing and had to walk back. Originally planned on ordering the Pork Belly Banh Mi but changed to devils egg and lamb meatballs sandwiches after seeing the menu. They came all very tasty and great look too. The waitress is very friendly and helpful. I saw the 2 out of 4 meat balls were not cooked through and ask her to bring back to kitchen to recook them, she brought back completely new dish with 4 meatballs again. I was totally thrilled. On entering I told her I was in a hurry and she heard me and brought the dish super fast. That’s probably why the 2 meatballs were a bit raw. Anyway, I strongly recommend it. The prices are reasonable. A good money for value. I’ll go back soon to try the Banh Mi.

Great Grandmother’s Spatula this meal and experience was phenomenal!

We had an outstanding experience at Bavette la Boucherie. Upon entering, the modern atmosphere gave a warm nod to the original architecture of the historic third ward of Milwaukee.
But that’s not even the tip of the experience iceberg here…. Every morsel was delicious. The carpaccio was so fresh and well seasoned. The filet mignon was perfectly cooked and paired well with accompaniments. And… the piece de resistance was the scarpinocc hand made pasta stuffed with ricotta and nduja sausage .. balanced with squash and lemon sauce and AMLONDS. After the first bite … I had an “unclutch your pearls” moment. The flavour and texture were perfection. The best pasta I’ve ever had. I thanked the chef Zack … he was so humble and gracious with his time to talk about his dish he is so rightfully proud of … I hope he knows what a talent he has :)
Our server Jacob was awesome. He paired wine with our meal, and gave great advice on what to order too! Patrick came by and checked on us … and expertly recommended the best espresso bread pudding for desert.
Eleventeen out of ten experience. Would not change a thing.

Great service, good appetizers and drinks. Unfortunately, it kind of ended there for us. They were out of the main I ordered (braised beef). Instead we went with a Corned Beef Tongue Reuben (good) and the Meatball sandwich (mediocre). For the price, we'd probably only go back for drinks and snacks.

Update 2024: we went back and had a better experience. We had the potato crusted octopus (very good, but also a very small portion for the price) and cornbread with black truffle honey butter (also very good, more reasonable price).

For mains we had the lions mane schnitzel and the same corned beef tongue Reuben. The schnitzel is definitely more of an appetizer than a main, and was a bit sweet to the taste for me, but was an interesting take on schnitzel with an unusual ingredient. The fries with the Reuben were amazing, get them with the garlic aoli!

We have been big Bavettes fans for years, love the quality/creativity/flavors and space and I had posted a 5 star review previously, but now reducing to 3 stars for one simple reason - price - we were a little taken aback at how much the prices have gone up - I know costs are up but $24 for a sandwich...we ordered the eggplant ($14) and it was a disappointingly small portion - obviously other customers are fine with it because the restaurant was pretty full on a Tuesday afternoon - we are definitely not "price" focused diners but at some point overall value starts to wear on the joy of the experience...I think we are done with Bavette's, but looks like she'll be fine without us-

We've always adored Bavette, but tonight compelled us to share our experience; Andrea at the bar was truly exceptional. And, naturally, our meal was superb. Although we forgot to capture a shot of the hamachi crudo, every dish was impeccably presented. Our go-to, the beef carpaccio, was as exquisite as ever with its balanced flavors. Andrea even introduced us to a new liquor that sounded interesting as part of a featured cocktail, going above and beyond by bringing over the bottle and providing detailed explanations. I have really enjoyed dining here on a Saturday night. Best to make a reservation as it was completely full. All dishes are so well balanced and thought through. Bread selection with flavored butters was fantastic. The octopus was delicious and the rueben beef tongue sandwich with fat beef fries melted in my mouth. Cocktails are innovative and delicious. Will definitely be coming back.

Wife and I went out with another couple for dinner on a Friday night.
The atmosphere is great, love the old timber ceiling.

The appetizers were delicious, though a little disappointed that the scallop dish only came with 3. Deviled eggs were great, as was the octopus.

Crazy disappointed with the steak. Ordered the 20oz porterhouse, which was >$100, medium rare. It was served medium to mid well and had been sliced in the kitchen. My assumption was maybe they were trying to make it easier for the customer, or may they didn't know how to cook to the correct temp. Regardless, it was wrong.
The filet side was horribly overdone and the flavor tasted off. The other side was almost medium, but had better flavorful.

No one else at the table got steak, and I didn't send back or comment so it wouldn't interrupt our evening.

Agree with some of the other reviews, if you're a butcher/steak house, it should be done right.

Enjoyable dining experience. Nice selection of starters/shared plates . We had the octopus for a starter ,loved the sauces & tiny strings of potatoes served with it They had a few steak dinner specials but we opted for the chicken sandwich that was served with Fresh Fresh dinner salad which was light & perfect . Enjoyable cocktails & atmosphere plus beautiful location in 3rd ward .

UPDATE- Back to Bavette I went with this charming lad I adore and once again the entire experience was top notch! Miss Karen and Team Bavette, have produced some amazing dishes who's flavor combinations are unique and ever so tasty. There service is always top notch, the cocktails and food are creative and delicous and again, selfishly I love that this gem is a easy 5-7 minute walk from my home

I went to Bavette for the first time last night and what a wonderful experience. Our server, Lily, was attentive and sweet. Our food was delicious as were our cocktails. I can't wait to go back and am so thankful this gem is just down my street a few blocks and a true asset to the downtown dining scene.

A great restaurant for downtown MKE!

I called ahead to make sure bringing three kids at 5pm would be ok, and the person on the phone was very gracious. At dinner, the service taught my children about hospitality. They calmly treated my children, the only patrons under 20, as if they were honored and dignified guests.

The food remains delightful. The charcuterie board ranges without chaos. What they can do with a sandwich! My son's hot chicken sandwich upstaged everyone, and my daughter's bulgogi-style steak was perfectly spiced and tender. The halibut was a bit dry, but the steak couldn't have been improved.

Extremely good cocktails — the drink menu is well curated and executed. They also delivered a mean, fresh martini.

I'd not braved this type of dining with my children before. They'll never forget it, nor will I. Some meals transcend their moment and stay with you. For us, Bavette's grace was and will be a benchmark.

Reuben tongue sandwich. I'm into it. It needs more sour krout and Russian dressing. 7.8/10
Korean steak au jus. Park my cab and call me a scoundrel, this sandwich is the bees knees. If I had a bucket list of 10 things to eat in Milwaukee, this sandwich would make the list. 9.6/10
Spanish gin and tonic. 5.0/10 they took a perfectly good drink and put a creative twist on it to make it mediocre.

Bavette may be the first ever butchery fit for the cover of a CB2 magazine. It’s a kind of cafe where class and carnivorousness collide, where you stuff a napkin under your collar so your tie doesn’t get grease stains, where you eat french fries out of a brown paper bag and drink scotch out of a crystal Glencairn glass. It’s the kind of place that serves a corned beef tongue reuben with cheese, spicy sauerkraut, and pickled mustard seed aioli with a side of beef fat fries for 17 dollars.

When I ordered this mouthful, I fully anticipated a sandwich with an isolated spotlight on the meat. This place, at its core, is a butcher shop, and three of the four words that make up the name of this sandwich are designated solely to the description of the meat – corned, beef, tongue. I was pleased to discover how wrong I was. The beef tongue was masterful, of course (how could it not be?), but every element of the sandwich made a choice to stand out. I’ve praised sandwiches before for their ensemble-nature of blending into a unique collaborative flavor, but this one was special for its ability to complement without combining. The bread was crisp and distinctly rye, appearing in flavor waves as I chewed. The sauerkraut was almost citrusy and herbal like an alcohol and made for a perfect contrast to the rich oils of the beef fat. Even the cheese was unique enough to inform me if one bite had more or less of it than the last. It felt like every bite was a new take on the same reuben.

I finished the sandwich without noticing and began to munch on the beef fat fries. They were unexceptional next to its companion on the plate, but they made for the perfect mindless snack while I zoned out in a euphoric trance recalling the flavors I said goodbye to only 60 seconds prior.

Flew into Milwaukee for a long weekend and immediately dropped into Bavette for a huge 10+ group dinner. It was a fantastic experience with strong cocktails, great wine and well-executed farm-to-table food.

We started off with Manhattans and a few bottles of wine. Delivery was well paced and we never felt rushed even though we took up a huge space towards the back. We ordered multiple appetizers including the Charcuterie Board, Seared Hokkaido Scallops with a savory Corn Panna Cotta, Iberico Ham, Hamachi Crudo and Beef Fat Fries. It was a good mix of fresh, fried and cured food to start. For entrees, most gravitated to the Pork Chop with Clams & Chorizo while others got the Butcher’ Cut (NY Strip on the night we went). I opted for an interesting Carmelle Pasta with Crab Ricotta Filling, Charred Corn, Crispy Jamon, Chanterelles & Pecorino. Outstanding flavors.

Service was great. It’s not easy catering to a 10-top and there was never any confusion or delay in pacing our meal. Top notch. There isn’t a whole lot of parking options. Our hotel was walkable to Third Ward so it wasn’t an issue for but I could see it being an issue on a Friday or Saturday night. All in all, wholeheartedly recommend the seasonal offerings at Bavette for parties large or small.

Atmosphere was excellent.Appetizers such as octopus , chicken liver and wings were fantastic. Sourdough bread was just okay tasted like it's been sitting around for a while. Main plates not so much. The pork chops had more fat than meat and the steak dinner seemed overly-marinated to the point that you couldn't taste the steak. Korean beef sandwich was very good.

I truly did not expect to find a restaurant like this in Milwaukee. Everything we tried from small plates, to entrees, to cocktails, were well put together.

We ordered multiple different plates to try more off the menu. My three favorite dishes were the Charred Octopus, the Halibut Cheeks, and the Grilled Cornbread. The octopus was masterfully prepared - tender, without washing out the flavor, and crisp from being grilled. Initially, I thought the plate was too busy, but after a few bites, I found this to be a well-balanced dish; not easy to accomplish! The halibut cheeks were the most shocking. Morels, truffle, asparagus and pancetta are not necessarily things I'd expect to pair well with halibut, but this speaks to the care put into each dish. Lastly, the cornbread. Tender, flavorful, not at all dense - lightly grilled and served with honey truffle butter. It was simple, but perfect.

I was fortunate enough to be seated in front of the pass. I spent over a decade in the industry and what I heard was music to my ears, and actually made me miss my time on the line. Expo was vocal and clear with communication to the line. Everything was coordinated to come out simultaneously, hot, and up to standard. It's obvious the staff take pride in the menu and their service and it shows in the finished product and experience while dining here.

The front of the restaurant is a butcher shop that sells a few other specialty items. Overall, Bavette La Boucherie was a welcome surprise that I believe may be one of the best dining experiences to be had in Milwaukee. I am eager to return and try new dishes!

Nothing but praise for this place. They offer an excellent selection of dishes appropriate for the season (I dined here in July). I’ve read some articles mentioning you’d expect to find a place like Bavette La Boucherie in Chicago, not Milwaukee. As a Chicago native who has explored a variety of Chicago’s restaurants I would whole-heartedly agree with that statement.

Somewhat casual environment and the staff were really friendly and down to earth. Prices are up there but that’s expected for a place like this. Most plates were around $20+.

If you like to experience new flavor combinations/food then this place is for you! Each dish was creative and executed very well.

FOOD

• Charred octopus with chorizo takoyaki,
bonito aioli, pickled ginger, mushroom &
kombu glaze

• Grilled cornbread with black truffle honey butter

• Blistered shishitos & tempura garlic scapes with salsa macha & avocado crema

• Grilled bavette steak with truffled mushroom duxelle, kale, roasted grapes & grilled pickled onions

• Seared halibut cheeks with asparagus, morel mushroom, pancetta, black truffle & black trumpet cream

Can’t really fault any dish besides the steak sandwich. I think it could have used more salt on it. I saw some flakey sea salt on it when it was brought out but I don’t think it was enough to be noticeable.

Everything else was perfectly balanced. I feared some dishes that had strong flavors might be so overwhelming you couldn’t taste anything else but that wasn’t the case. For example the truffle in the butter with the cornbread used real truffles as opposed to truffle oil (which has a more potent flavor) and it was just the right amount.

Excellent food and excellent service. If you’re a foodie then Bavette La Boucherie is worth checking out.

A friend from the area had gone here almost a year ago. Spoke highly of it. Absolute dissapointement despite trying half their menu. We tried the chef choice charcuterie board, the rillete, octopus with chorizo, the soft shell crab open top sandwich, the corn bread, focaccia, steaks, and custard dessert.
Nothing impressed us. Almost all down hill actually. The charcuterie board had some decent stuff in there. The octopus was ok, pretty fishy, but the chorizo-stuffed cake under it was very uninspiring. That goes for the rillete as well, which I m used to have served cold, but these were warm accompaniedby bread that tasted burnt. Corn bread and focaccia were aight but steep price. The crab sandwich was a battle of flavors which in my opinion did not go together. Fries were really good though. However, the last plate served was the biggest let down, the steak. Kinda weird when u call yourself a butcher. Poor flavor, dry (despite being cooked medium rare), not tender, and whatever small, poor, meat flavor existed was completely over powered by the blueberry sauce on it. Dessert was not bad, but nothing to rave about, reminded me of this pudding I used to get at grocery stores in argentina (which also has damn good steak). Anyways, the custard was definitely not enough to save this place.

It was just a very poor experience food wise, might have been a bad day, might be what Milwaukee thinks is good, but won't take a second chance after our experience. There are better places to eat than here.

We came in without reservation a little after 6 on a Wednesday... and there were lots of open tables (which stayed open until we left), but were told there were no tables. We ended up sitting at the bar.

Our server/bartender was Jacob and he was superb. He was very accommodating in making a keto friendly (well, at least, sugar free) Old Fashioned for me. I was a happy camper. For some reason not a lot of bartenders I've met know how to use sugar free sweeteners.

Food.
hubby had the Beef tongue Reuben ($16) with a side of Aioli ($1.5) and fries. I won't say it was a huuuuge stack of meat, but decent, and with good flavors. Actually, he really liked the beef tongue - it was surprisingly tender.

I had the Butchers Steak - the Bavette cut. Honestly, it wasn't worth $35. The pomme aligot (cheesy mashed potatoes) and the foie gram mousse was top notch (though I couldn't have much of the pomme aligot, per keto). But the steak itself was a sirloin, and though well cooked, I really do prefer a fattier cut. Of course, I had to try it to know that. So I won't be getting this dish again, especially at this price point!

Unfortunately, there really aren't other great keto options here for dinner... maybe the pork cheeks and charcuterie.

For a whole meat butchery, I was disappointed in their steak selection.
