Description

Started in 1973 as a small neighborhood health-food store with a half-dozen crocks for bulk goods and two coolers, Beans added slowly to its list of products as customers requested. In 1979, believing that, just like everyone else, "health-food" shoppers would appreciate quick, hot food in the middle of a busy day, we started serving food. The food was good, people stopped in to shop AND eat.

Early in the summer of 1993, we literally became the hottest spot on the East Side, when a spectacular blaze (fireballs and everything!) drove the lunch-hour crowd into the street and left us with just the foundation and one usable wall. Over the next year and a half, we developed our plans, secured financing and by late Fall of 1994, standing in exac

Wonderful! The menu changes every day, but the regular items are just as good as they were 40 years ago. It has high quality ingredients and reasonable prices. My favorite restaurant outside of Paris!

The servers didn’t smile and didn’t greet us or even ask how we were doing midway. The turkey and Swiss sandwich had no Swiss on it, they forgot to bring the mayonnaise, they forgot the chili, the food was slightly warm. Oh yes, they didn’t even give us napkins either or at least I didn’t have a napkin. Also, you could tell the food was premade. It didn’t taste fresh to me. This was in the sit down experience, not at the takeout. That food looked great and it looked like it was very well-made.

First time eating here and I had a really good experience. Gluten free friendly menu, great service from our server Ryan. The grocery section is full of Gluten free options as well as prepared foods. What a great way to start my Sunday! Cheers

The people who work there are lovely, but the quality of food is quite bad. 1) I’ve had a former employee tell me the health code violations there are numerous & 2) though I figured I’d give the grocery portion a chance while buying a postcard there, the two vegan frozen items I bought were considerably freezer-burnt:(

I absolutely love Beans and Barley, from their amazing dining room and incredible food service, to their shop and all the products it offers. One of my favorites is their perfume oils, and how they have multiple healthy food options for all kinds of dietary needs! Overall, Beans and Barley is one of my go-tos in Milwaukee and will definitely be coming back.

We had a great time here. We really enjoyed the food. The service was good too, and after that, we walked through the store area where they baked their own baked goods. It was really good, it was a good outing. Should check it out.

Oh my Beans & Barley, what a joy you are. My mother has been going here since her mother took her many decades ago (when it was practically a different restaurant), and we still enjoy ourselves two generations later! This is a great place to find healthy food options without it tasting like "health food". I frequently come here with family and friends to catch up, or before heading to a show at Jan Serr Studio. Honestly I can't speak for the whole menu; in all the years I've been coming here, I've only ever gotten the Sweet Potato & Black Bean Burrito with extra Lime Creme Sauce, and I've never been disappointed! That burrito has healed deep and dark parts of me. The portions are sizable, either for sharing or for taking home. I'll admit I've had friends that have been underwhelmed by the food, and I believe that the best time to eat here is in the evening for their lunch/dinner menu, when the vibes are at their peak, particularly in the winter. On busy weekends/holidays it's worth making a reservation so you don't have to wait. Make sure to bring a sweater in case their AC is blasting, which it often is. A huge plus is the adjacent market in the same building; many great snacks, thoughtful gift options, and fun treats for yourself can be found there. Thank you B&B for so many great burritos!

The last 3+ times I’ve eaten here, I’ve been disappointed. I ordered the vegetable stir fry last night and it was so full of celery and undercooked rice that I regretted ordering from here all together. Not sure what has happened but I’m tired of spending money here only to be let down.

I really love Beans & Barley for their food. it's one of my go-to spots whether I'm grabbing takeout or ordering on DoorDash. But I dined in yesterday with my partner, and unfortunately, the experience wasn’t great. The service was super slow, and it felt like our food had been sitting for a bit before it was brought to us, it came out warm-ish, not hot. The restaurant itself was also freezing, which made the whole thing a little uncomfortable.
Our server was okay. She forgot my partner’s smoothie (which she did take off the bill, thankfully), but we also never got waters. Not the end of the world, but kind of frustrating when you're sitting there waiting and thirsty. I’ll still come back because the food is solid, but I hope the dine-in experience improves.

Still overpriced but I have been dining and shopping here for over 35 years. Iconic place. The staff is usually weird, unengaging, dismissive, but the deli is great for takeout but prepare to pay a lot. The bakery is hit or miss, and not cheap. FYI take my advice and go during the last hour they're open because the deli and bakery items are half off! I really like their deli and their kitschy fun stuff in the store like candles, incense, non-toxic household cleaners, etc.

We had a wonderful experience at Beans and Barley! Waitress so great.
The gift shop is so great!!!! Loved everything! Great place to buy gifts or things for your home in addition to food. Local honey, cat toys, they have it all.
I love gift shops by the way . This one is as good as Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s gift shop and the one at Harvard Museum of Natural History (those are the best!)
We liked our smoothies, cherry lemonade, burritos 🌯 and stir fry. Pies, desserts were yummy too

Catered Beans and Barley for a post-wedding family picnic in the park! The process was seamless and we had so many great options to choose from. When we ordered, Jennifer made sure that we had enough food for 100 people and met dietary restrictions (nut-free, some vegetarian, some gluten-free). The day of, the team set everything up - including heated pans - all we needed to do was bring plates! Everyone complimented the spread - the turkey chutney sandwiches and the hummus on the veggies were guest favorites. And the pear coffee cake! Everything was clearly labelled and clean up was a breeze. Could not have been easier or more delicious - would order again!

We’ve been BandB patrons for ages- even before the current place was built. We usually stop by every month or two. The last several times we’ve been there, the service has sometimes been inattentive, the wait times for food were long even when it wasn’t very busy, food has come out cold, and incorrect items were brought out. Whoever is currently training staff needs to bump it up a notch. I get that it isn’t fine dining, but having people standing around staring into the dining room and not greeting customers as they come in, then saying they are“unauthorized to seat us” is just st silly. We’ll be looking for a different place for our pre-and post- Oriental Theater meals from now on.

Somewhat disappointed, but still had a nice experience, and I hate to leave a bad review; TLDR the vegetarian food was either really great or meh, the server was soooo nice but things took forever.

I really really wanted to like it, and I’d eaten here a decade ago and it was great. This time, the food was hit or miss. The walnut burger tasted like something frozen from the grocery store, and we asked for fries but got chips; the poppy seed torte was a generous serving size but was hard and dried out like it had been on display for day, and had almost no flavor. Enjoyed the mushroom lasagna, very good, but the side served with it was a salad that lacked any interest, just greens and raw mushrooms. I ordered a glass of wine to go with the food but it took so long to come that we finished our food and sat waiting (like at least 15 mins for a single glass of wine), so I canceled it. The server was super nice and apologetic about the wait, she even gave us the dessert for free, and the vibes were nice and enjoyable, loved the art. I’d recommend giving it a try, maybe when you’re not in a hurry? lol. The whole shop is super cute and they have great selections for dietary needs.

Not recommended and very disappointing…the City of Milwaukee Health Department recently closed the restaurant for several hygiene/health-related issues (jsonline) including unsafe food storage, lack of proper hand washing techniques and serving food which was beyond its’ expiration date.clearly indicates an environment of poor restaurant and management skills…all of this after the discovery of an employee working in the restaurant who had contracted Hepatitis late last fall.

I called this morning, just happened to be driving by and thought we'd take mom to one of her favorite places. Guy was nice and said if we come in now, we can get a table for four. Walked in three minutes later, and the ladies at the host area said no. I explained what happened and all she said was "you didn't talk to us." We stood there like fools, and they offered us two seats at the end of the breakfast bar (there were four of us). They didn't apologize or anything. Last time we go there.

Beans is the best place to go for a great meal that doesn’t taste like it’s healthy. It’s my go to spot for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The staff is always friendly and the food is usually served quick. The servers are AMAZING! They’re always filing your coffee or your water and there are yummy daily specials. My husband even likes it and he’s not a vegetarian.

Bonus facts: the restaurant has local art displayed and often for sale. There’s a great deli and hot case for take out! The store is fun to browse; I rarely leave empty handed. They pay their servers a decent hourly rate while 99% of restaurants still pay servers $2.33 an hour.

This place is really going downhill. The atmosphere and food lack approval. I ordered vegan cakes, vegan sausage, and vegan potatoes. I had to return the vegan potatoes and sausage. The potatoes were covered with under cooked, sticky looking garlic. I should have taken a picture. This is the 2nd time this has happened. Where the service is so subdued, and refective of the culture. I am a nigerian who tries to try and support business through the city, but i believe this will be my last time eating at Beans & Barley. I know I won't be missed. If you know what I am saying. Also, this is the 2nd time my stomach is upset after eating here. The sausage was tasteless. I can cook better than this at home on a bad day.

Beans & Barley has been one of my family's favorite places in Milwaukee for over 30 years. It is our go-to for their amazing burritos and fresh salsa, and their summertime fresh blueberry pie is to die for.

Most food items can be ordered either for pickup at the deli or for a cozy sit-down meal in the café. (Walk-in to choose a daily special out of the deli case, call ahead for a reservation, or order online for either pickup or deliver via DoorDash).

Also check out their funky giftshop that carries everything from calendars and fidget toys to locally made organic soaps, soft drinks, and ice cream.

We had a very rude waitress. I asked if the chips and salsa that came with the entree would come out first or along with the meal. For whatever reason our waitress wasn't understanding the question and she kept saying it's included with the entree in a condescending tone. She took her frustrations out on us for the rest of the evening. Our beers were slammed on the table as she quickly walked away. A request for a side of sour cream was met with a huff and a glare. She dropped off the tiniest paper cup of sour cream and ran off. She never once checked on us during our meal and was going out of her way to avoid walking by our table. We were confused as to why she was so angry.

HOW THE EASTSIDE LONGS FOR THE ORIGINAL OWNERS TO RETURN

A place where the idea of working to serve the customer comes second to dealing with the effects from the night before. Real top-down management/owner issues!

I can already tell after just one visit, this will become a local favorite. There are too many reasons that you need to not miss out on coming here - check out the gourmet get-everything shop area (think holiday shopping!) - you’ll find items from wine to gifts to dog toys. As well as snacks, cold drinks, basic house needs. You could get lost in this little shop area!

If you just want to order to go there is a deli area with a generous selection of pies & cakes, hot prepared food, sandwiches, and soup offerings that change every couple of days. But there is also a sit-down cafe with a very chill vibe where you can sit and order. We had the most delicious grilled Cheese sandwich (gooey cheese and soft challah bread) and a tuna melt with black beans on the side.

This is definitely a can’t miss!

If I want a salad, this is usually the place I head to. They can do them quite well, and the variety of salads you can get is nice.

However, I don't enjoy most of their other food, sandwiches especially. Not their thing, and that's fine. The service too, is usually lacking, and this is across several visits over about a year. Not hostile or spit-in-your-food bad, just inattentive and slow.

The store attached is nice if you're a health nut, they have organic and small batch items that please some.

The 4.5 star average seems generous.

Last week I went in with my partner on a weekday around 11am. Wasn't busy at all but we sat at the bar. No one even acknowledged us for about 5 minutes. Keep I mind I chose this place bc I like their Bloody Marys and I was feeling brunchy. We both ordered a bloody and it took another 15 minutes. Ok maybe they were in the process of making the mix but that wasn't communicated so it's my only guess why it would have taken so long.

Finally got the drinks and ordered food. Food took another 20-25 minutes (hummus, chips and salsa, and a burrito). No one asked if we liked our food, if we needed anything, another drink..... nothing.

The food was good this time I'll give them that. Last time I was there I had almost the same experience except with fajitas. They got the order completely wrong, asked me if I "wanted them to fix it" and I said they can just bring me out what was left out off of the plate and they still got it wrong...AGAIN! You could tell the refried beans were scraped from the crusty bottom of the hot well. It was like trying to consume concrete mix. Just a mess. They offered to discount it by half so I said ok. Got the bill, no discount. Not to mention they've messed up my order every time I've gotten take out and then they argue with me about it. Just fix it, it happens every single time! I stopped ordering takeout a long time ago.

Ok back to the present. This time I got the bill and I'm almost glad no one asked if we wanted another bloody (I would have said yes) bc ONE bloody is $12! The garnish was a pickle spear, one regular olive, and the most pathetic excuse for a pepperoncini I've ever seen.

I'm under the impression people only go here bc of the location and the relatively diverse menu making it good for groups or picky eaters.

Sorry Beans, I've tried too many times to have a good experience but I always leave with buyers remorse.

The positives: the interior is cute, the artwork changes periodically, and there's one server who is just a delight. We'll call her Q. If she would have been our server I'm sure my experience would have been much different.

DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY!!! Ordered lunch from here a week ago to my workplace. Got a notification that my order was delivered and couldn't find it anywhere, reception told me no one showed up. They told me to call Door Dash, and I told them that I have no luck with them if I didn't go through the DD app. I was then directed to a manager who told me she would call Door Dash, call me once resolved, have new food made and delivered for me, and I would be refunded for the missing food.

I never heard back from Beans and Barley, never got sent the new food, and I am still missing my refund for the food that didn't even show up. I essentially wasted my lunch break that day talking to the store and am out $30 for food that never arrived.

My guess is Door Dash didn't want to be responsible and neither did the merchant. They and so many other merchants that use third party delivery spend time pushing the financial responsibility on the delivery company, and visa versa so that no one has to claim responsibility, and they usually just end up stealing your money.

An item was missing from the order. Door dash and the merchant enjoyed going back and forth between each other with the blame. Horrible service. Horrible delivery. Everyone involved, from the restaurant, to Door dash and the delivery driver are at fault and no one, absolutely no one has been helpful in remedying getting me a refund. I was told by B&B to come into the restaurant to get the refund…if I could of came in for a carry out order don’t you think I would have done that instead of ordering delivery?

This use to be my favorite place growing up, but the quality of food and customer service isn’t what it use to be.

A person in our dinner party had a plethora of food sensitivities and our server was able to talk over her needs w her and the cook to figure out a meal she was able to eat without a problem. We were very impressed w the service and the quality of our meals.

Placed a to-go order of a tuna sandwich at the counter on a late Saturday morning. 35 minutes later, they hadn't even started my order yet so I canceled and left. I get that weekends are busy but that's not an acceptable wait time for a to-go sandwich.

Jim was extremely rude and condescending and should not be a manager! First time when I went on 2/5/2024 and ordered 2 chicken caesar salads and some other items from the deli. After the long wait we get our order and when we got home there was no chicken on our salads which we paid for, so I called told the manager and she said “this has been happening often which our kitchen staff”. So she said she going to refund the orders and offer salads for free when we come back. On 3/3/2024 I decided to give them another try on a chicken caesar salad and this time I got chicken but no dressing for my salad. I called the manager Josh and said this is the 2nd time my order was messed up and I want my money back. He said he was going to refund my order and then he proceeded to offer a gift card. I said I didn’t want the gift card b/c clearly you guys can get it right and I’m not come back and he insisted to send the gift card. On 3/8/2024 I called back asking about the refund for the first order back on 2/5 and the refund for 3/3 and I spoke to a person named Jim. Jim spoke to me in a very condescending manner and off putting, he was talking in a way that he was doing me favors and saying he comp me $80+ dollars back + the gift card. Actually they only refunded parts of the order on 2/5 and void the transaction on 3/3 and I took the gift card back today. So you didn’t give $80 back and OF COURSE after the service I received I want the money back for what I paid for. I DO NOT recommend spending your money with a business that treat their customer so poorly speaking in such a condescending way.

Wonderful unique market/restaurant/ fancy oils and candles and weird sushi shaped eraser. Books, clothes, knickknacks, candy, chocolate, homemade pies and cakes, salads, hot food cases... and then you can always sit in the restaurant or at the counter.

I've bought day old foods - delicious! Hot food, cold sandwiches, and crazy little trinkets or cool funky kitchen gadgets you didn't you needed. And pet stuff, too. Oh, and they have amazing cards for any occasion.

One of my favorites in MKE! Delicious vegan pancakes, salads (the dressings are so good), sandwiches and burritos. The service is always good and the place feels cozy and inviting. The little shop inside is also fun and is a great place to get gifts and snacks.

Sometimes they are a wee bit slow while other times they are very snappy. Either way the food is incredible everytime. Garlic Parmesan dressing with an Italian roll and the garden salad is a must have. We love you Beans and Barley and always will forever and ever. 10 10 10 (it is the kitty cat's jammys.♥️ )

We have been a frequent visitor to this restaurant for the past 13 years. Our family enjoys the food at this restaurant. Our experience last night was not satisfying at all. My walnut burger came without vegan mayo and was dry and blend, our kids' pita pizza was a little burnt and overcooked. When I informed our server about this, she did not have a solution to offer and said, "You got the right order." The service was very poor. In spite of not being busy, it took a long time to get our food. People who arrived after us got their food sooner. I have observed a lot to turn over at this restaurant. The staff constantly keeps changing. Hope management makes a note of this and makes changes.

This restaurant was okay, unsure if we caught them on a poor day. I was in pursuit of some vegan food for brunch on a Tuesday-a lot of places in the area didn't seem to be open. I got the balsamic tofu sandwich, which didn't taste much like anything - the pepperoncini peppers on the sandwich were yummy, though. I cook with tofu often and have had it at other restaurants where it is very flavorful. So, I know it isn't the tofu's fault for not packing flavor. The vegetarian chili was yummy and flavorful, so I poured some of that on my sandwich. The orange and carrot juice is very tasty. My partner got the Cajun chicken sandwich which was again pretty okay. They did enjoy the creamy broccoli soup. Our neighboring table had quite a gew mix ups with their food and commented on their sandwiches being "alright". Our server was preoccupied with their other tables so did not check in on us during our meal and then brought us our bill as we were finishing eating - which was fine- but we were never asked how things were by anyone working there. Atmosphere was nice and bright and open. Lots of cute senior citizens eating out. I think looking back I would try the portobello sandwich instead.

1st time here and coming from the Discovery Museum with a nine - and five year old, one adult gluten intolerant and one adult on a salt restrictive diet, this place worked out great. The food was delicious, and our wait person was very patient and kind since this was going to be on separate checks. I personally had the quesadilla stuffed with chicken and grilled vegetables. This was awesome. My wife had a turkey/swiss melt and with a side salad loaded with garlic/parmesan dressing. Absolutely loved it. The rest of our party was happy with their choices. And the Chocolate Cream Pie was rich and dense. Beans & Barely also has a cool little shopping area, plus a very eclectic vibe of customers and employees. Check this place out!

This restaurant used to be better years ago. I believe the service and food quality have declined over the years, unfortunately. The restaurant holds a lot of nastalgia, as I believe it's one of the first vegan restaurants in the state. The menu offers many organic and vegan options. I did notice some meat selections as well. They offer a dozen unique salad options, and they also have a kids menu. The drinks include fresh juices, smoothies, alcoholic beverages, and coffee options. All dishes are made fresh to order with homemade scratch ingredients. The location is great with ample street parking available. The ambiance is what I like the most. The restaurant is bright 🌞 and welcoming! It it has a vast amount of natural lighting, which comes through from its huge beautiful window pains and skylights. The restaurant has many live plants as decor, which I enjoy as well. Attached to the restaurant seating area, there is a store and deli. Overall, if you're in the area, it's worth the stop.

It was my first time attempting to eat here. We came in at 700p. They close at 800p. We were seated. The server introduced themselves and didn't come back for over 15 minutes. The person I was with was hungry so we left. The menu looks great. Service was off.

Today was one of the worst experiences we ever had at this place. We went for a dine in and we were made to wait for more than an hour for our food. We had two kids with us and they did not have the common sense to atleast bring their food first. We did not receive any updates either about the status of our food. After a long frustrating wait and multiple reminders we asked for a to go and even that took forever. We did not even get a courtesy apology for being made to wait for so long. All in all a very very unpleasant experience.

They have nice vegan options, the food is good, and the place is charming. However, I won't be coming back due to their poor service. When the check came, they swap my credit card with another one, and somebody else left with mine. These things happen, and it is no big deal when it's handled properly. Instead, I waited for more than 20 minutes, had to ask different servers what had happened with my credit card, and nobody gave me an answer, they kept "going back to check"... When I walked up to the host area to demand my credit card back, or an explanation of what was happening, I was met with an "oh, we don't have your card" as If I was asking for the moon. No explanation, no apology, until I became pissed, and then was told my card was given to another client. This was probably around 25-30 minutes after the check had originally came, and somebody else had my credit card.Just ridiculous. I could have cancelled the card way sooner, instead of waiting around trying to figure out what was going on. Very poor handling of the situation, and absolutely avoidable. Just be straightforward quickly so that the client can cancel the card, and that's it, it wouldn't have been a big deal.
