Candy store Chocolate shop Food producer Ice cream shop Restaurant

Description

Since we are dedicated to preserving our old family traditions, our candies and chocolates are made using the same methods our family started using over 50 years ago. We still use copper kettles and wooden paddles to make our hard candies, and continue to dip our chocolates by hand. Much of our equipment is irreplaceable due to advances in equipment technology and production. But one thing is certain…when you talk about quality chocolates…the new styles of equipment and production just don’t hold a candle to the old way when it comes to quality and flavor!

This shop is a step back in time. The beautifully cared for booths, mirrors, candy cases and tiles are a treasure. The many varieties of treats brought joy to everyone in our group. The hardest part was deciding what to pick. We will definitely have this on our repeat list when we visit the area again.

Transport yourself back to a simpler time and visit Beerntsen’s in Manitowoc.

It was originally founded in 1932 by Joseph Beernsten and remain a family owned business until 2003. The new owners, Dean Schadrie and his family have a background in making chocolate and stated that they would keep it the exact same.

I had not been here since I was probably in my early teens and 30 years later it was everything I remembered growing up. I was even able to get the same sundae, the Teddy Bear, that I got as a child, and it was EXACTLY as I had remembered. Even the menu was the same!

They have 32 different sundae options for you to choose from. They also have a small lunch menu.

Afterwards I had to get some chocolates and taffy.

It was a wonderful experience and walk down memory lane.

Would have happily given 4 or 5 stars had their customer service not been so dismal and they weren't so senior unfriendly. Boxes received have miniscule silver address and website but no phone number. I have received two hand packed that were instructed by buyer to be NO CARAMELS only to receive 6 to 8 caramels per box. Manager McKenzie gave me permission to be upset as she endlessly defended their inept teen age staff "that make mistakes" and further demonstrated the inability to take a telephone complaint. 5 star product with 1 star customer service.

We've been coming to Beerntsen's in Manitowoc for decades and now we are lucky to live nearby so we can keep trying new treats. The employees are friendly and attentive and the place is nostalgic and historic, with gorgeous woodwork. We're looking forward to continuing to enjoy all that Beerntsen's has to offer.

Such a cute shop. All types of chocolate and goodies, the “Dubai chocolate” pistachio cream bar was a little deceiving, they advertised a picture of the bar, but the three bars that I bought did not have no where near the amount of filling in their photo. The chocolate is delicious but definitely needs more filling, as the bottom layer of the chocolate is very thick. I would have loved the amount of knafeh like their photo but still a very delicious chocolate bar!

Stopped in for lunch and some candy. The classic dining area was beautiful with its original black walnut seating and tables. The menu of food items was short, but delicious and thoughtfully put together (the ice cream and drink selection was huge though!). My wife and I both enjoyed our food (BLT and chilli ❤️) and ice cream drinks (I had a chocolate phosphate and she had a chocolate malt). The chilli was a surprise hit for us. Perfect seasonings, not skimping on meat, and not one bit greasy. Service was kind and quick. After our lunch we picked up candy including these mints that tasted like I went back in time to my grandma's house. I've never found mints that taste exactly right and have tried many places. If you're in Manitowoc, this is where you should be having lunch.

Took a family daycation to Manitowoc and this was one of stops. We literally had "kids in a candy shop" and it was great! We took some time to enjoy some ice cream and the Sundae News, then explored all the options for chocolate behind the displays. We loved seeing all the various molds and candies. The workers were all very helpful and even pointed us in the direction to other food stops and a beach in the area to enjoy. They were the best!

This place has been around since I was a kid. I remember my mom taking us here a handful of times for icecream. Never really went back because I never really thought it was that good/worth the money. Well, it was my step son's bday and he wanted chocholate so I figured I'd give it a shot. Highly disappointed honestly. He got 10$ in chocholates, fine that's cool he was happy. We got some rock candy's. Those seem fine. I got a chocholate peanut butter frog it was ok. Ended up getting these chocholate disks with sprinkles and I always loved those and honestly. They tasted like chocholate that had been sitting in my gmas basement for years! I literally couldn't even eat one. Ended up spitting it out. Idk if they don't check their inventory or if it's the way they were made but it was definitely stale tasty chocholate with a funky after taste. I won't be back. No hard feelings there but I'll drive to the chocholate chisel before I come back for stale dog butt chocholate. Also, the choices are insanely limited. Like cool you have a bunch of milk chocholate shapes. It's all exactly the same. Those weren't even really good either but hey the kid was happy so can't complain there. 4/10*

Well taken care of vintage architecture and quality chocolate. The set up has most products behind cases so most selections require staff to assist and get. I loved reading about the history of the shop. I am a chocolate lover and also love old buildings. The beautiful classic vintage aesthetic of the chocolate shop and cafe was charming and overall as a business adds so much to Manitowoc. I loved my ice cream sundae…there was a lot of variety to the menu. I only wish my sundae was served in a cool looking glass dish. I ordered the Cony Island sundae and fell in love with the delicious marshmallow topping!!!! As for the chocolate, it was good, however I sadly was disappointed in the salted dark chocolate candy, in my opinion there was way too much salt crystals on top and inside the chocolate piece. It could have just been that piece but I think it would be good if they added a little less salt so it adds to the chocolate instead of overpowers it. I am a lover of salted chocolates. Overall though I would recommend this shop. One thing I think would add to the experience is if you played some good classic oldies tunes in the background for some ambient music.

If you want some high quality chocolate/caramel goodies in the Manitowoc area, this is THE place to go. Never had their ice cream, but judging by the quality of everything else, I bet that it, too, is very good.
Only downside is that it's a little expensive for any of the more complex treats, but that's to be expected.

Edit: I've had their ice cream since making this review, and it's also quite a good quality (and you get a whole lot of it!)

Beernsten's is a Manitowoc staple that has been serving ice cream and unique chocolate items and other goodies for decades. Hot fudge and caramel Sundays are the highlight in my opinion. I am new to Beerntsen's. I didn't grow up in the area but people I know that did recommend this place a lot. So after trying it I can see why. All the confectionaries are magnificent. I love the choice of milk or dark chocolate for just about everything which gives me an excuse to buy two of everything. Their turtles are amazing. Their fudge is great. They've been around as long as I have. I have been here for malts and lunches...and chocolate since the 60's. A Manitowoc icon that is open when the rest of the town is closed for the night. The dining room is wood booth old school. Menu is mostly soup and sandwiches. A great place to get tasty ice cream, sundaes, banana splits, malteds, or two scoops on a waffle cone.
But the main attraction is the chocolate. It's house made and the variety is near endless. The chocolate covered coffee beans will jack you up.
Bottom line, if you're in Manitowoc, it would behoove you to check this place out.

Cute shop. We had a yummy Reuben sandwich with pasta side, a refreshing strawberry lemonade and for dessert a turtle sundae. My granddaughters into skulls so I got her a chocolate one.👍
