Salad that accompanied meal was very small portion wise. Had the winzzerfanne and it was not our expectation. It lacked flavor and presentation. The spaetzle was combined together and served like a plate of Mac and cheese or goulash. Not typical of the way that is usually prepared. It did not taste like it was made with homemade spaetzle or fresh ingredients. The staff was very nice and service prompt.

Stopped in with the family on our way to our weekend destination on a Friday night. Took my family there recently. Expected German fare - very disappointed. The food we did order on the VERY limited menu was decent. But most likely frozen cooked. Very nice atmosphere and great service. To the nice staff: Stick with North Woods grub and you guys will do just fine... ps. My wife and I were both stationed in Germany three times. Just saying. Not what we expected given the high rating and number of positive reviews. My wife ordered the crispy chicken sandwich which tasted horrible, not sure if it was freezer burnt or what, but was returned in exchange for a hamburger which was also a sorry excuse for a burger from a fine dining establishment. I ordered the salmon which was dry and came with soggy wrinkled green beans and plain white rice. The staff was pleasant and the waitress was obviously disappointed we weren't having a pleasant time. The atmosphere was uniquely German in design with some Duetch style fare on the menu. The dining room was uncomfortably warm which I suppose added to the European ambiance, but a place with these prices you expect it to have central air conditioning. We won't be back.

Dined early on May 30th. Jana, our server, was fantastic. The food was VERY good. I had the curry dish with buttermilk friend chicken. Delicious!! My husband had one of the German dishes which he will have again. Looking forward to dining there again.

Outstanding.  Some of the most outstanding hospitality we've experienced in the Northwoods.  Black Forest Pub & Grille was a real treat tonight.  From the engaging conversation with Collin and Mike at the historic Bar to the vivacious charm of our server Kat - our food and dining experience far surpassed our expectations.  My seared Salmon was perfect and the handmade fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp was buttery and creamy.  Make the drive as soon as you can, you'll be glad you did.  Ask for Mike & Kat to enjoy their enthusiasm and Northwoods hospitality.

If I could rate a zero I would. I asked for an Old Fashion, First of all the bartender tried to scare me into not ordering a drink, saying “I have a fake ID scanner” “have you heard of those?”, (i’m 23), so I hand the man my ID, and he proceeds to try to “scan it” with his personal phone, then proceeds to say “he knows it’s fake”, and “he can tell it’s fake because it’s not horizontal.” After the 5 minute most ridiculous argument of my life, he asks what kind of Old Fashion I would like, at this point I had enough, if we weren’t meeting someone for dinner we would have left. I understand bartenders need to check ID’s, but he was beyond rude, this was my first experience at this place and I will not be back.

What happened to this place? We used to drive from miles away to have dinner and we’ve been known to come three days out of five for drinks so we were so sad to see the For Sale sign last summer. We saw it was opened again when we were here this winter, so we gave it a try TWO times. NO NEED TO RETURN THIS SUMMER. The drinks are watered down with club soda, the best dishes are no longer on the menu and the staff appears to all be new. The bar tender told me he hasn’t had an Old Fashioned in 30 years and I could tell when I took my first sip.

Wasn't that terrific, I didn't walk away with that WOW factor. Bartender seemed to have his mind somewhere other than the Black Forest. My wife ordered dinner, I ordered 2 appetizers, I told the bartender that I wanted the two appetizers at the same time my wife's dinner was served. Well, one appetizer showed, a few minutes later my second appetizer showed up, I asked for sour cream, server said she'd be right back, never saw her again. Half way through my second appetizer my wife's dinner showed. I'm out!!!

We've been to Black Forest twice--once three years ago and once in August of this year. Compared to our experience 3 years ago, the overall quality has gone down. Here are our biggest observations based on our recent visit:

1. Drinks: We ordered a couple of mixed drinks. They weren't cheap but were very small and mainly ice. Feels like they're being cheap with the drinks.

2. Service: The service is friendly and good. No complaints about service.

3. Food: The food was mainly good. Mine was good, but a bit light on the meat. A couple people in our party ordered the goulash, and it was way over peppered, to the point that neither of them could finish it. The cheese curds that we had there three years ago were the best I'd ever had. They must've changed the recipe somewhat, because now they're not the same. They're still good, but not great. It also feels like the portions are smaller now.

Overall, I'd say that the restaurant is good, but not great. It's a little disappointing because we were really looking forward to it based on our amazing first experience.

I truly enjoy authentic German food and I've not found another German restaurant in the central/eastern Northwoods. I had the Black Forest Schnitzel. It was good, but I was surprised that the schnitzel was not breaded and pan-fried. The spätzle was okay, but I have had better. The German beer was excellent. Overall, it was good but not great. Given that I do enjoy German food and don't have many other options, I'll be back and try a different dish.

Bad service - ordered pizza for curbside pick-up. Got the text it was ready. Told them I was waiting via text. Waited and waited. Finally went in, talked to a waitress as she flew by me. My pizza was sitting on a table - no one was going to bring it out! She told me they don't do curbside on busy nights. She did not apologize. It doesn't matter who made the mistake - you should apologize for the misunderstanding because you are a part of the organization! Customer service 101!

We love Good German food, and they have done of the best! Their Red Cabbage was top notch... way better than most places, which usually make it way too sweet. The sauerbraten was tender and delicious. You can tell it was properly marinated and cooked slowly compared to places that just cook beef roast and think they can fool us just by smothering it in gravy. We will return for sure.

Curbside pickup service was quick and professional with easy directions on where to park and what number to call. This was our second Fish Fry here, and my first baked fish, which was truly fabulous! There were only 4 chunks of fried fish, but they were very tasty. The potato pancakes were weak, and not fully cooked. The cole slaw was in a tiny cup, the size of which also serves tartar sauce. We had the same wait server this year, and while she was adequate in a light amount of customers, she was once again sitting with a significant other in the bar area when we left. I still intend to come back here to sample a German entre one day, with our son who loves German cuisine, but this is the only place where we don't have any left over fish to take home.
