The food was simple and bland. My sandwich had nothing but meat and cheese. You basically had to wait on yourself. They even wanted to charge me for a refill of tea. Great view, but meal was somewhat disappointing.

We stayed in room 3. Exceptionally clean and comfortable! We loved the deck overlooking the lake. Ceramic coffee mugs and real wine glasses. King size bed was comfy. And a jacuzzi tub, complete with robes! Breakfast sandwiches from the Sandbar restaurant (in the building) were amazing. Canβt wait to come back!

The room was perfect. What a great view of the lake. Great location easy to get to and quiet. Saw eagles every day including right on the roof of hotel. Good food and coffee options. Bed was comfortable and shower was very nice. Good location for sight seeing. One hour from Superior. Bayfield was near buy and a nice place to visit. Would definitely recommend this place for couples.

This Inn is a real treasure. We were welcomed by John, who was accommodating in every way. He started a fire for us the two nights that we were there. Our room was fashioned for a ship captains quarters. Many clever details. The views were spectacular especially the sun rising. It is close to everything and in warmer weather, it is on the bike/pedestrian path. A hidden gem, and we have travelled the world.

We really enjoyed our stay. We stayed in room 4, and it was clean, cozy with the fireplace and had beautiful views right on the water. The next morning we got coffee and a breakfast sandwich at the sandbar, both were very good. Also loved that it was right near the park that has an artisanal water well, crisp and fresh water. Highly recommend!

I spent only one night here in August in Room 5. It does not have a balcony. I did not enjoy my stay, but perhaps a winter stay might be better here than summer.||The upside:|Nice location next to Lake Superior with easy on/easy off from the highway. Room was clean, bathroom shower was large, towels and linens decent. There is a nice dorm room style fridge in the room and a microwave in the hallway (for common use with the other rooms).||The downside:|This is more like an air B&B vs. an inn. There is a person working in the downstairs shop during the day, but after hours there is no on site presence. The 5 rooms are located on the 3rd floor above the shop & cafe. There is no complimentary breakfast served as you'd typically find in a true inn (Think Rittenhouse Inn in Bayfield.) When you depart in the morning there is no one to check out with and no one ever asks you how your stay was, not even via email post check out. ||The room was 77 degrees on our arrival. Someone had turned it down to 68 and apparently the AC stops working if you go below 69 degrees. Once we figured that out and turned the AC back up to 69 it kicked in and took about 90 minutes to cool the room to 74 degrees. We kept the thermostat on 69, but the room never dropped below 74 degrees, which for me is too warm for sleeping. If you're staying in winter this may not matter. ||There was a cute high-boy style table in the corner with two chairs. It held a Keurig maker and cups etc, however the table seriously rocked if you even touched it. We had to prop it up with rolled napkins to make it even slightly stable. Since it was so unsteady we chose not to use the table. Any maid cleaning this room and setting up the table would have recognized an issue here, so clearly someone is deciding it's not worth their time to fix it.||The curtains are not room darkening. In summer in Northern Wisconsin it stays light well into the evening and the sun comes up early. In addition 2 of the windows in this room face the highway and it is very loud with trucks and motorcycles etc. ||Between the hot room, the inability to get the room dark and highway noise we found ourselves very short changed on sleep.||The elevator is very slows and I stopped using it. When I did use it I had to repeatedly enter the code I was sent as the door would close, but the elevator would not move. Using the stairs is much easier, but be aware that you walk up stairs to level 2 and then you have to use a metal key to get through this door. You then go up another flight of stairs to get to level 3 (where the 5 rooms are located) You then use a different key to access your room. ||You might enjoy a stay here more than I did. I was glad to leave in the morning. ||I was disappointed that there was no one around at 9 am to talk to about some of the issues with the room. I was disappointed that no one ever messaged me to ask my thoughts about my stay. ||I will definitely stay elsewhere on future visits to the area.

This is an incredible location overlooking Lake Superior. We arrived at 8:15 pm and had miscommunication on how to access our room (contactless check in). Initial text was but received and I could not get anyone by phone. FB Messenger resulted in solving the problem. The room itself (Sailor's Retreat) was fabulous. Very spacious with a balcony overlooking the lake. Comfortable chairs in the room, plenty of lighting, glassware and wine opener provided, fridge and small sink at the wet bar area. I appreciated having many electrical plugs and USB ports in the room. The shower was huge with a regular showerhead and an additional rainfall shower. Wonderful stay!

Had a great 3 night stay at the Blue Wave Inn (Flowing Waters room). Weather was a bit iffy, but we still loved our stay. Windows open listening to the waves all night. Perfect! We splurged for our anniversary and it was well worth it! We stayed in #3 Flowing Waters. The room was beautiful and the view was stunning!! Real glass pint glasses to use while enjoying a drink on the balcony and listening to the waves of the lake in the evening. Real coffee cups to use while enjoying a cup of coffee on the balcony while watching the sunrise and the sky change color and reflect off of the lake in the morning. Nice cotton robes to wear after enjoying the jacuzzi tub. The bed was cozy and comfortable to just lay in and enjoy the beautiful view of the lake. The shower is pure bliss with dual heads. Everything was clean. It was like a cozy home with a perfect view. The only thing that would improve it would be someone there to check you in and give you your key in-person instead have having an elevator code sent to you in an email.

We were pleased to be able to get a reservation for the 1 night we stayed at the Blue Wave Inn. Because of it being Memorial Day weekend, many hotels were requiring a multiple night stay. This is an unique facility, with only 5 rental units, a store and a restaurant and it is right on Lake Superior. ||We arrived around 7 pm and there were no other cars in the lot. When we entered the building, we saw a note to check in at the store. When we found that closed, we were directed to check our confirmation email. At that point, I checked my phone and found directions to use a code in the elevator and go to the 3rd floor. We found our key in the door and our room was very attractive and beautifully decorated! Various kinds of coffee pods were available, but we don't drink coffee, so no big deal for us. Would have been nice if they offered tea or hot chocolate in addition to coffee. They also offered a corkscrew, wine glasses, a refrigerator and a great walk in shower.||We would definitely stay here again if in the area!

I have a few requirements. Clean, unique, balcony overlooking water. This is not your regular hotel. There aren't very many rooms. But you get the best of Ashland. Coffee or champagne on the balcony and no one else in other rooms can see you. You can only see the waves, or the twinkling lights from Washburn or the power plant. Our room had a whirlpool tub, which was excellent. Big enough for two. A wonderful rain type shower if you'd rather or do both. The bed was very, very comfortable and the windows looked out onto Lake superior also. You have a mini-fridge and a coffee maker. Microwave is down the hall centrally located. But the coffee is best downstairs in the coffee shop. The breakfast bagel is more like a panini - very yummy. sit and look out onto the lake there or go to the 2nd floor and gaze farther. We ordered the charcuterie tray and it was fabulous! We also received champagne and very much appreciated that. We were 10 minutes from all the good restaurants. We will definitely go back.

For context, my dad passed away last year and the stresses of dealing with things warranted a solo getaway. I live in Minnesota and Lake Superior is open in Duluth and all along the North Shore, so when I was looking for a hotel within 3 hours of home and saw the Blue Wave Inn situated right on Lake Superior I thought this would be perfect! I can sit on the balcony, listen to the waves, read and relax!|I booked the night before I drove down to Ashland, just under 3 hours away. Imagine my disappointment when I arrived to find the lake completely frozen! I would have booked somewhere in Minnesota if I had known this. It would be a cool feature to have on the hotel's website-so people know if they are actually going to enjoy the lake or look at dirty ice. There was also a young man who either had a dog or a girl with him both days I was there riding his four-wheeler loudly around the lake for hours and yelling. There were also some redneck people walking out on the lake both days, making lots of noise and swearing, right in front of the Inn (none of them were staying there either)! Not the peaceful mini trip I had imagined! |The room was pretty nice though. The bed was comfortable, the chairs were comfortable, the huge shower was cool and had 2 different kinds of shower heads. The balcony would be nice in the summertime. It was in the 70s both days I was there so I did get to enjoy a little bit of quiet time on the balcony in the sun. The first evening I was on a video call with my husband showing him the view of the ice and when I turn to the right I saw the man in room 3 pulling his shirt down. Awkward!! There's a small area in the room with a K-Cup machine and a really cute mini sink. There are also real glasses and mugs which was nice opposed to plastic or paper. The K-Cups however were cheap brands from Menards and Amazon. The shampoo, conditioner, and soap were all awful! Very low quality, the soap was super gritty and left a weird film on the shower shelf. There's a mini fridge in the room and a microwave in the hallway. The elevator here is the slowest ever. I used it twice and I had to continue entering the code as it would not take. The door would close and the elevator would just sit there. Enter the code again, finally the elevator moves up. You could walk up and down the stairs five times in the speed of this elevator! The hotel rooms here use real keys and if you do use the stairs you have to use your key to get through the door on the second level. If you have your hands full this is hard to do. Same goes for getting in your room there's nowhere to set your stuff down unless you want to set it on the floor. I know this sounds like a lot of negatives but the room was really cute and in the summer it would be a great view of the lake. One other thing that I found strange was you never see anybody that works there. You get an email with the code for the elevator and your key is in your door. You leave the keys in your room when you leave. No one to greet you, no one to ask you how everything was when you check out. |I ordered a few different food items from downstairs in the coffee shop, but they were just okay and priced pretty high. Employees there were great tho, very friendly! |Also I should note I was in room number 2 and the blinds here are very light so if you need complete darkness in the morning this room is not for you. I actually got up at 6am both days with the hopes to see a beautiful sunrise but it was quite boring as the sun comes up behind the view from the balcony and the only thing over there is the Xcel Energy plant. I could hear people slamming doors but I didn't hear TVs or talking from other rooms too much so that was good. If I ever had to stay in Ashland again for any reason I still might choose this Inn as it's a real good location if the lake isn't frozen. Please note that it is not quiet though-lots of big trucks go by right behind it and the room actually vibrates! If you made it this far thank you for reading my long review. Just disappointing as all I wanted to do was relax and I didn't get to.

I booked Room 2 here last minute for a relaxing solo getaway where I planned to read on the balcony and enjoy the sun and listen to the waves. You can imagine my massive disappointment when I got to Ashland and saw that Lake Superior is still FROZEN here! It's all open water in Duluth and along the north shore. I wish I would have known this before hand, I wouldn't have driven 3 hours and paid 300 dollars.
However, the room was really nice. The bed was soft and comfortable. The chairs were squishy. The warm lighting was wonderful, (no ugly fluorescent bulbs!) The massive shower with 2 different shower head styles was pretty cool (I only used one at a time so not to waste water), and when the annoying person on the 4 wheeler riding on the Lake for hours each day wasn't around, it was nice and peaceful sitting on the balcony. I could hear doors slamming but no tvs or talking from other rooms so that was really nice. The mini fridge was nice to have and I love the tiny wet bar sink! If you need a microwave there's one in the hallway. I get up early so the light window covers didn't bother me but if you need dark curtains room 2 is not for you.
A few gripes-the slow elevator-I'd have to press the code more than once every time so I found the stairs and used them when my hands were free (you have to unlock a door on the 2nd floor with a key). The cheap soap was gritty and left a residue on the shower shelf- hate to know what's on my skin! Shampoo and conditioner same brand and no good. Coffees were also cheap brands from Amazon and Menards. For the price of the room I'd expect a little better quality. It's also weird never seeing anyone, being checked in and given info via email loses the personal touch. No one to ask how your stay was when checking out seems strange as well. Also, no hook to hang clothes or even a shelf inside the bathroom.
I'd like to come back with my husband and stay in the summer. The view would be great when the water isn't frozen and dirty. Nice firepit area outside as well (didn't use). This Inn is a little over a mile away from the downtown shopping area so there's nothing around it except a good diner across the street. There is a trail along the shore that would probably be nice in the summer!

Just got back from spending three nights at the Blue Wave Inn (Flowing Waters #3). The sunsets from our private balcony were amazing. If you are sitting inside the room, it feels like you are on a cruise ship. Location is close to everything. Cute unique place. Room was clean, well stocked, comfortable beds and quiet. Lots of windows facing the lake, so if you like to sleep in, I would suggest a sleeping mask, because the shades are not room darkening. We had breakfast sandwiches from the Sandbar and they also get a five star. Friendly, younger staff. I hope we are able to come back and try out one of the other rooms.

It was so quiet that when the AC shut off, it was "eerily quiet!" (pro-tip - always bring a sound machine on vacation!). The only very minor improvement would be to make the worlds-slowest & tiniest elevator faster, (LOL) -- But these are small things. Would 100% recommend.

The location of this INN is awesome. An amazing view of lake superior. The rooms are definitely a huge highlight. The showers are also amazing
The service is very odd, as in they have weird times when they're there. but they're on top of it as fast as they can be and responsive. Seems like it's ran by just 2 or 3 people but it feels like they pour there hearts towards the business.
Definitely will stay again if I find my self in this neck of the woods.

Everything. Location of Inn. They have fire pits outside, kayak rental and bike rentals. Close to Bayfield and in the quaint town of ASHLAND, WI. THE ROOMS AT THE BLUE WAVE were the nicest we have ever stayed in. Beds are firm and comfy, large updated shower, extremely clean and a balcony with view of the bay. Very quiet and relaxing. Has small restaurant and store. Very friendly. Food is great. We were in #4 and we had a fireplace in our room also. Canβt wait for August and thank you. Something special to look forward too. Cyndi

My husband and I left on a impromptu road trip earlier this week and stopped in Ashland. We weren't looking for much, just a nice room to hang out for the night. The Captain's Quarters definitely exceeded our expectations! Very cute room with a comfy king bed and a rainfall shower. We want to return and stay in one of the even better rooms in the near future! So far the Blue Wave Inn was the best value and best overall hotel of the trip!

Absolutely charming place. Stayed in the βcaptainβs quartersβ - super clean & cozy, and filled with nice touches like the king bed, huge shower, and somewhat kitschy but undoubtedly delightful nautical decor. Spent a night here passing through Ashland and it made me want to return just to relax a few more nights at the Blue Wave Inn.

Honestly, this hotel is the best! Quiet, clean and comfortable! We just stayed here in October of 2021 and couldn't be happier. Everything is very well done in this small, five room hotel! The views are wonderful, and the room is very clean and nicely appointed. Also love the fact that the guests are independent ... no front staff, no one wandering the halls at all hours of the night, no noisy neighbors ... just peaceful, restful, clean, and beautiful ... we HIGHLY recommend it! We stayed in room #2 (Sailor's Retreat) which has a full three-panel patio door to a private deck and a king sized bed.

Nice hotel but traffic noise is a dealbreaker. I really wanted to like this hotel but normal traffic on Hwy 2 is clearly audible from the rooms. Every car that goes by can be heard. And thatβs the normal cars..,when the hillbilly pickups and motorcycles go by with their straight pipes it gets really loud. This would be a great hotel if it was off the beaten path. A word about the rooms too - We got the larger room with the intent of having our adult daughter sleep on one of the βadditionalβ beds. However the additional beds are murphy beds and the mattresses are substandard and not fit for an adult. She ended up on the couch. We could have probably gotten by with a cheaper room had we known this. We wonβt stay here again.

*FOR THE SAND BAR RESTAURANT ONLY* We were passing through this area and decided to stop by for a bite and some drinks. We were floored! There are a lot of great things about this hotel. The location was great, the room was beautiful, the room was clean, and the building was quiet. The view was nice!
This hotel missed some basics. There was not an alarm clock available. We also needed a new pillow and extra towels. We called the phone number and nobody answered. We walked downstairs to the coffee shop and they tried to help but werenβt able. We left a voicemail to the owners and did not receive a reply. Also, the carpet was torn near the feet of the chair. I wouldnβt expect that for the price of the room.
Because if the terrible service, I am giving this hotel two stars. The value was not good. If you donβt need any help, this hotel would get 4-5 stars.

It's a beautiful place and views are great! The service was a let down though, with sheets that were dirty before we arrived!... I asked for clean sheets and was told they would handle it the next day, so I had to sleep on the couch all night. I also wasn't staying another night, so it didn't help that they would be cleaning after we left. Won't be back :(

This place is truly something unique and special...I've never stayed anywhere quite like it! My fiancΓ© and I stayed in room 5- which, as other reviewers have mentioned, is the smallest out of the 5 rooms. However, it wasn't small by any means and had plenty of space for two people- and we still had a view of the lake. And, it had a rain showerhead- which was a treat for sure! My only tip for future travelers would be that the sun can be quite bright in the mornings since the curtains are not blackout curtains- so, if that bothers you, try bringing a sleeping mask.
The rest of property is beautiful as well. We enjoyed spending time in the on-site cafΓ© and bar. I had to work for part of the trip, so I cared about the quality of the WIFI (which worked perfectly well). The cafΓ© has gorgeous views, good food, and great drinks- so it was an excellent place to work for a day.
Finally, it's worth mentioning that the on-site store has equipment rentals if you want to bike, kayak, etc. There's a lakeside trail on the backside of the property and plenty of restaurants/stores within walking/driving distance.
Overall, we had a great trip and I can't recommend this place enough.

My wife and I recently had a wonderful 3 night stay. Great base for exploring the northwoods.
We arrived after 6PM so check-in was unique to me and I neglected to read the hotel email thoroughly. Read it all the way to the end, where you'll find a clear check-in flow and the code for the lift. No one there to greet us, but it wasn't a big deal. Slow elevator, maybe the slowest ever. But we got a good laugh and weren't feeling rushed. Pro tip...your key ring has two keys. One for your room, the other for the door on the right at the top of the stairs in the mid-section of the building which allows you to bypass said elevator!!
The views from our room were amazing, room was very clean and comfortable. If we had a suggestion, it would be to service the hot tub in room 3. the jets didn't have the force we are used to experiencing and after a long day of snowshoeing ...oh well, if that was our only 'thing', I've got no complaints. Ashland is a lovely community.

stopped in for a drink with a friend, guy was very unfriendly almost to the point of rudeness. A young lady came in to take over, so we found that he was getting ready to go, so we must have been a bother to him. He also needs to learn to tend bar, as a bloody mary starts with 2 oz liquor in a 16 ounce glass, especially when you charge $10.00 for the drink. He was very rude when asked to add more vodka, and even poured it in a 1 oz jigger, after it was poured on ice, so you know part of the liquid in the jigger was water, and i was willing to pay extra for the extra liquor. Having grown up in the business, and tended bar for many years, i was appalled when he was slamming the glass and jigger and bottle on the bar. He should probably stay in the kitchen, but he was slamming things in there also. The hotel seemed to be very nice, and the clothing store, but that bar person left alot to be desired.

What a beautiful and unique experience! My wife and I stayed the night, as a halfway point on our way to my grandmother's funeral.
We got there late at around 9pm, so there was a unique-to-me check in experience. It went super smooth! I followed the instructions in the text message, and everything went flawlessly!
We stayed in room 5, which while not having a direct lake view, was immaculate and decorated and presented flawlessly! Everything was clean, and the amenities were great! There's a lot of channels on TV to watch, if the weather isn't so great to walk the beach. The bathroom, especially the double-headed shower, was truly a welcome surprise. To make it better, it was completely silent all night. That's definitely not something I've been used to with a typical hotel stay. Of course, this is definitely not your typical hotel!
There's a variety of nearby restaurants and bars, some even within walking distance, should the inclusive options not be available at the time of your stay. I recommend the Neighborly Bar just up the road.
Given our schedule, we had to leave early, right before the cafe area was set to open, but it smelled great on our way out!
I don't know when the next time I'll be up in that area will be, but as far as I'm concerned that's the only place to stay in Ashland!

Got off to a bad start, numerous things went wrong. But, they made everything right during my Two days. In fact they bent over backwards to make our stay a good one. The room was fabulous. Second floor with a nice balcony facing lake Superior. Beautiful views. The place was clean and the manager was professional. Nice couple of shops in the hotel. Cool walk way along the lake. Restaurant in the building plus two more across the street. Bad start turned into a pleasant stay. No doubt I will return

Unique boutique hotel. This small hotel has only 5 rooms. We stayed in room 5, the smallest room and the only one without a balcony and a view of the lake. Despite that, the room was really nice with great amenities like a huge shower with overhead rain shower feature. Comfy bed. The hotel is located right off the highway so there is traffic noise. There is no front desk rather you get a code for the elevator to get you to the 3rd floor and the key is in the door. Great for a one night getaway.
