I have been to this place 2 times now. Really appreciated that they let their light shine for JesusπŸ™Œ First time the cherry bbq bacon burger was a surprise as to how good it was! Came back this year to have it again and see if it was as good as I remember? It was! The waitress was super helpful and knowledgeable about the area and the owners actually won the guinness book of world records for kayaking! It's definitely a country feel like cracker barrel in an antique store.

Honestly I was a little wary due to the Christian slant of the business, when I am in fact a demon. However, the breakfast was delicious and filling! Great service. I didn't devil anyone the rest of the day, instead enjoyed bicycling the island. Maybe I've just been hangry all along.

Service was slow, only 1 waitress and 1 cook. But the food was exquisite! Gravy and biscuits flavorful and omelets huge and delicious.

This place has amazing food. It was run by a sweet little lady. When you go you need to make sure you are not in a rush because it does take awhile to get the food, but the wait was worth it.

Overpriced for what you get. The bacon was excellent, but the breakfast came with only a couple tablespoons of potatoes. Potatoes are so inexpensive, at least serve a bunch of those so people aren't going away hungry. The atmosphere was also too busy with knick knacks all over and a bunch of different tables and chairs that didn't match. Felt like eating at a rummage sale.
I liked that it's a Christian business and am writing this in hopes that they tweak some things and make this a better dining experience.

It's a quaint spot but needs some work. Actually enjoyed the room but the breakfast was another thing. Nice lady but not aware of customers. Had to ask for a coffee refill and waited over 35 minutes for our check. Not sure if we'll stay here again. Also no instructions on TV and when asked the woman from that morning didn't know finally after breakfast was heading to our room and she asked where we're going. To our room I said, as if she'd not spoke to me the night before about the TV

The room we had was a room that was added onto the end of an old barn that was a ways from the restaurant. It had pet hair all over the floor from a previous guest. There were no curtains on the windows, so we were woken up every time the people staying in a camper next to our room came and went during the night. There was no internet connection, and the television did not have a modern tuner. The only thing for viewing on the television were a half dozen or so old dvds. It was not a pleasant experience. Not recommended.

Quirky interior was mismatched and cozy...think Grandma's house if she shopped thrift stores. No one else there when we walked in. Staff felt volunteer-ish and has ties to a local church (no alcohol served or allowed). Young blonde employee waitress was a sweetie!, and happy to share island information with us nosies! Awesome burgers!! $15.50 for mine...spicy and all are 1/2 lb! No fries available on menu...just a few Kettle chips w/ a bite or two of cold pork n beans and an odd coleslaw. All 4 of our burgers were super yummy though! Lots of outdoor seating too. Market directly across the street for easy grocery grabbing for ferry ride back. I would absolutely eat here again!

Staff was very friendly which is why we ordered food, but the food was not good, especially since it was expensive. My husband ordered the Pirate French Toast, and it was a few pieces of cheap dried out bread with nasty slop over it. Don’t go here if you want good food at a fair price…you’ll be disappointed.

Returned here with thoughts of the fantastic Marrianes chicken salad sandwich we had the last time we were here.
Wrong!
What we got was two pieces of dry toast with a mix of dry chicken, bacon and pecans with stale chips.
When we called to ask about it, Valerie argued with us about our order saying the "chef knows how to make it." Well obviously he didn't.

Was not a fan. This Has been the only place on the island I felt unwelcome. We went in with 3 groups of 4 not one person felt comfortable with environment. not one enjoyed the're food. Prices where outrageous compared to other dining options on island. 1st time I haven't left a tip in 20 years. No service, No tip, No return business.. my advice walk 40 steps to middle bar 2 and get good food, great service, and fare pricing

We stopped here to eat after taking a tour of Washington Island. You'd think for an establishment so proudly advertising "Pie with Door County Cherries", that they'd actually have cherry pie... but no. What about the pecan pie then? Nope, none of that either. "Okay, well the cheese quesadilla sounds nice. $11 is a little pricey, but I'm sure it'll be good", and then when you're brought out a few slices of melted Velveeta cheese sandwiched between a flimsy flour tortilla, the cheese so soupy it pours out moment you pick it up to take a bite, you know you're dealing with an establishment to which TacoBell can claim to be its culinary superior.

As we were leaving, the owner was verbally abusive towards the staff to the dismay of all the restaurant patrons. Ma'am, accountability starts at the top, and if your restaurant is this much of a wreck, it starts and stops with you.

Avoid this place at all costs.

How do you mess up buttermilk pancakes so badly that they refuse to follow the very laws of physics? Did you somehow forget to add the buttermilk? Perhaps the flour? Even drenching the pancakes in syrup did nothing to help. In fact, it made it worse! The only thing enjoyable about this meal was watching the flies eat the syrup on the plastic utensils given to me. Fun fact: flies have tounges.

The worse food we had in a long time. Went in the afternoon so they weren't that busy. Our food did not come out until after other people that came after us. All we ordered were burgers. When they came out the burgers were burnt and the buns were burnt also. The waitress didn't come check on us once I even had to go find her to get our check. Took a spur of the moment trip up to the Island, expecting it to be pretty tourist-free this late in mid-week September. Turns out every ferry was packed! Stopped at Bread and Water for lunch. Plenty of outdoor seating and good signs posted to help everyone follow Covid safety protocol. Had the Hawaiian burger, which hit the spot - I only wish the bun was a little sturdier to help keep all the goodness in.

Our server was Haley, and while there was definitely more business than usual on a September Tuesday, she was quick and friendly, and was a great server! Thanks for an awesome lunch!

Our group rented 2 double kayaks for roughly 6 hours (half day) at the price of $70 each, + tax. The proprietor, Valerie, is incredibly sweet and knowledgable about the island, weather conditions, and kayaking. She was extremely helpful and answered all of our questions. She even brought the kayaks and paddles we needed to the launch site and came to pick us up once we had finished. The process is fairly informal, but it's best to call and speak with Valerie in person, as the rental service is also housed by a cafe. Would recommend the views from Jackson Harbor to Schoolhouse Beach.

We came in for lunch. There was a volunteer in her pajamas helping to serve people because it had gotten busy all of a sudden and there was no staff other than the chef in the restaurant. We waited over an hour to be served our food as the volunteer kept saying β€œsorry she makes everything from scratch so it takes a while to cook” I ordered a can of Diet Coke that had expired. My grilled cheese was not cooked it was basically two pieces of bread with a cold piece of cheese in between served with a pile of chip crumbs. The soup had no flavor. My friend ordered a quesadilla that had barely any cheese in it and was served with pace sauce. We paid 40 dollars for food that was not even cooked. I could have gotten a nicer meal in Chicago for that price.

I ate here for breakfast. I think this place has potential as a faith-based diner but they need to go back to the basics. Clean coffee mugs and silverware are a must! The service was friendly and the atmosphere was nice and quaint. However, they were not prepared to be busy and frantically ran around. When the patrons flood in take a deep breath and realize there arent that many. Give each table proper attention and make sure they get what they ordered...especially when its a side of bacon😟 Took 1 hour to get our food and the bacon never came.

I brought my 91 year old mother here for a weekend. She was born on the Island, and we've been to Washington Island many, many times and have stayed elsewhere (everywhere else was full this time). We totally understand that accommodations on Washington Island can be somewhat worn out, but they're generally clean. We stayed at the Artist's Studio at Tipping Bucket Farm. The room was absolutely filthy. I found an old broom and quickly swept up the floor (picture attached). The rugs were so full of dirt, I pushed them under the beds. Nothing had been dusted or cleaned in years. There was spilled milk dried on the table. Broken furniture. Dead roach on floor. Toilet bowl was filthy. My bed was full of hair (see attached photo). Never again. All this for the bargain basement price of $110/night. Unbelievable...

We ate at this great little restaurant for lunch while staying on the island. I had the very best BLT that I have ever had, and I make them all the time at home. My husband had a wrap that he loved as well. I also had a piece of cherry pie for dessert that was just what I was having a hankering for for days. It was homemade. We ate outside at a picnic table and it was very relaxing and enjoyable. The service was also top notch and the server very friendly. There is a story behind this cute little restaurant and inn. This is a wonderful family who runs it. The mom is a pastor and adopted 6 children who were in the foster system. I am glad we chose this little gem for lunch and will visit again if we are in the area. You should too!

We did not stay here but we did stop for lunch a couple days ago and it was one of the worst dining experiences of my life. We waited about an hour for our food, and about 5 minutes before our food did finally arrive the waitress came to tell me they had just ran out of soup. In fact they gave the last bowl of soup to the table next to us who had arrived after we did (and ordered after us as well). The food was overpriced and not good at all, to put it lightly. Our sandwiches were crusty and flat (the grilled cheese had literally only a few pieces of shredded cheese smashed between two toasted to cardboard flat pieces of bread) and they didn’t include some of the side items listed on their menu that were supposed to come with it. The service was awful, the food was awful, and the cook ran out of the kitchen twice to go to the grocery store across the street for more food items. Get it together people!! So disappointed and we will not be back.

Relaxing and pleasant. For breakfast, they were the only restaurant in town with power. They ran out of many ingredients, and understandably, the order took a while with the uptick in clientele. We booked online in October for a summer 2018 stay. We received an electronic acceptance of our reservation. Then no other follow-up from the owner. In January, I followed up with the owner, only to be told that they had never received the request and the room we had reserved was double booked. The owner offered no other solutions. If I hadn't followed up, we would have arrived to no available room. She then said that her electronic booking system may not be working. Do not rely on the owner or the electronic reservation system that is on the website.

We had a 3 night reservation for the Carpe Diem Apartment at this establishment and, immediately upon checking in, we had concerns about the cleanliness and overall appearance. The actual accommodations definitely do not look like the photos on their website and the online description is inconsistent with what is offered. We would have left right away but we had a commitment at an event on the island the next day and we did not have another place to move to. Against our better judgement, since we had no other options, we stayed Thurs night but we then left as soon as we woke on Friday and went to the event. As the day went on and we thought more about our concerns related to the accommodations at Bread and Water, we chose instead to stay at the park where the event was being held and sleep in our cars (this included my sister and her two children plus my two children and myself) rather than return to the apartment.
We contacted the owner of the establishment and she offered to move 3 of the 7 people in our group to another location for the rest of our reservation but we instead chose to leave the island a day early, due to the horrendous condition of the apartment and because we didn't want our party split up (leaving 4 people to have to remain at Bread and Water). The owner did reimburse us for the final night that we were not there but she refused to refund us for the night we slept in our cars or give us any other money off because of our extreme dissatisfaction with the accommodations. Based on the severity of these issues, the lack of customer service in addressing our concerns (beyond refunding us for a night we weren't even there) is appalling. This entire situation was very upsetting as we had been planning this trip for nearly a year. Unfortunately, there was no way we were going to stay there beyond the one night we had to because it was so unsanitary and unbelievably disgusting.
Issues with our accommodations:
Β· there was an abundance of black mold in the closet of the bedroom
Β· the apartment had a strong, musty odor
Β· there were used coffee grounds in the coffee maker upon arrival
Β· garbage was in the kitchen wastebasket when we checked in
Β· there were significant amounts dust on nearly every surface
Β· the bathroom toilet was dirty
Β· there were insects flying around inside and climbing on the walls
Β· the bathroom door did not close
Β· holes in the floor/walls
Β· TV was not functioning
Β· tons of dirt and dust under the beds
Β· burners on the stove were covered in grease
Β· the door to enter the building was covered in spider webs and dead bugs
Β· lack of smoke detectors
Β· crusty, old food on the silverware and dishes provided
Β· there was sticky stuff on the shelves of the refrigerator
Β· there was sticky stuff on the bedside table in the room with the double bed
Β· there was something crusty all over the front of the TV
Β· overall, everything seemed run down and filthy
We have never had such a horrible hotel stay in our entire lives. We consider ourselves very understanding and we can overlook a lot. However, this was beyond anything that is even close to acceptable and the owner's lack of service recovery when we have contacted her multiple times via email and phone to voice our dissatisfaction with this stay is extremely disappointing. We would never, ever stay at Bread and Water again and you should consider yourself warned against staying there as well.

Let me start off with I'm a city dweller. We stayed in the Carpe Diem apartment. It was very spacious but has seen some wear and use. My family and I recently stayed at Bread and Water for two nights. It was truly a unique and amazing experience. Valery Fons, the owner/operator would do anything - literally move heaven and earth to ensure your stay on Washington Island was comfortable, delicious and enjoyable in ways that you just can't find in this day and age. This is not a five star hotel. It is a far rarer entity. It is run by a host and her beautiful family who genuinely care about their guests. If you go, be sure to check out her kayaking museum where you will discover that Valery is also one of the giants of the expeditionary kayaking world. This humble documentation of her exploits (28,000 miles on one trip alone from the Arctic to the tip of South America) is mind blowing.

We have a large family (6 kids!) and the large suite attached to the cafe was more than spacious enough for all of us. The furnishings are inviting, the beds are COMFORTABLE, and the living and kitchen area suited our needs for the short stay. ||However... the single bathroom was absolutely dismal and this is the reason for my mixed feelings. The bathroom floor was disgusting. Previous guests' hair and dirt were gathered in the corners and that really grossed me out. The toilet bowl was also either stained or very dirty. ||The owner is friendly, but the business appears to be incredibly understaffed. We waited forever for her to notice us and get checked in, as she was single-handedly cooking food for a large group eating from the cafe. ||We would likely seek other accommodations in the future. |

My boyfriend and I stayed here for my birthday and I couldn't have been happier. It's hard to find accommodations that allow pets but Valerie's Tipping Bucket Farm was perfect. My dog loved her horses (likely believing they were merely large dogs) and the room was cozy. The Artist Studio was huge for just the two of us and the bed super comfortable. The farm was quiet with a gorgeous view of the night sky once the sun went down.||We had some trouble reaching Valerie to check in, but the bar next door (Karly's) to her restaurant allowed us to use their phone, informing us AT&T doesn't have great service there. While checking us in, she took a map and drew us a point of interest guide of the island as first timers who weren't sure what to see. She and s friend also sang to me happy birthday when they found out it was my birthday. ||Lastly we had breakfast at her restaurant the next morning and I had the cinnamon apple pancakes which were fantastic. She came out, stating she was the cook and asking how everything was. She has such a beautiful soul and I can't imagine how she runs everything she does even with help. We will return in a heartbeat and I cannot stress enough how enjoyable she made our short one night stay. I will stay nowhere else on Washington Island.

Stayed at the artist's lodge which is located a few min drive from the main lodge and diner. The room was not cleaned even though we got there at 5 pm and we were asked to come back in 1 h while they took care of that. Of note, the room had no bathroom which is not clear from the description on the website. The room is very cluttered. I still give the lodge a 4 because the management is so friendly and helpful. The farm also has cats, hens, a horse and our kids enjoyed this experience. I would still consider this place again but not that particular room. Good food at the diner.

Amazing service! The food and atmosphere were great. Outdoor dining is available, but the food was not cheap.

Great Lodging, Food and Hospitality!!! Valerie! was great at greeting us for the night stay and making sure we were comfortably accommodated. The late morning brunch was so good and delicious. The pancakes, omelet, french toast with cherries was awesome. Valerie is not only fast in preparing the food but was good at making it sumptuous. I highly recommend Bread&Water to be visited. The only downside was the coffee was not hot enough to stay long on that cold breezy day.
