I had one of the worst dining experiences here. I ordered an Old Fashioned, and it arrived almost clear it looked more like water than a cocktail. When I mentioned it to the waiter, he took it back and brought another that somehow looked even clearer. My chicken was just as disappointing completely flavorless. For a place with such a strong reputation, the food and drink quality were shockingly poor.

I arrived at 6:45 and joined the waitlist at 6:50. They told us we had a table at 7:26, but we didn’t get our food until 7:57. The whole experience was disappointing.

My cream of mushroom soup was way too sour, and the creamy pasta had an overpowering green pepper taste. The cheesy bread that came with the soup was cold and extremely salty. My friend’s burger was just average — nothing special at all. Honestly, the fries were the only thing that tasted good. The flatbread was also way too sour.

Even though we ordered several dishes, they seated us at a tiny table right by the aisle, and when I asked to move, they said no. When I was trying to pack up the leftovers, the space was so cramped that I accidentally broke a glass, and no one came to help. Our server also took a long time to check on us.

I waited over 40 minutes just to get seated and then another 30 minutes for food — absolutely not worth it. Both the food and service were terrible. I’ll never come back.

Beautiful place, but they put us in the far back room with one window. Musty smell, and lots of flies. One other table asked to be moved. We were the only people back there. Food was good, and service was good. More soda options would be nice. I would recommend checking it out though. Especially if you get to sit in the bar area.

The food is absolutely delicious—every dish we had was perfectly executed and seasoned. The service was also impeccable; our server was attentive, friendly, and very helpful. The only downside? The line is incredibly long, and the wait can be significant. However, given the quality of the food and the excellent staff, it is absolutely worth the wait!

I got eggs, potatoes and sausage for breakfast with 1 piece of bread. The sausage had zero flavor. The potatoes were almost burnt and also had zero flavor. The biggest issue I had was spending more time swatting flies away than eating. I’ve never seen so many flies in a restaurant. I understand the indoor outdoor atmosphere but finding a way to keep flies out of peoples food might be a good idea.

This is a place I keep coming back to everything I've tried here is always delicious. The only small hiccup is the service: after being seated, it took a little while to be greeted by a server. We love Cafe Hollander! The food is always good— I love their brunch and dinner menus! We love the outdoor seating and how kid friendly it is— great kids options and areas to run around with Hildale having kids games. My husband and I stopped in on Sunday, hoping for a celebratory anniversary brunch. It was early in the morning, very few people, so we were seated right away and then promptly abandoned like forgotten leftovers in the back of the fridge.

For over 15 minutes, not a single server acknowledged our existence. No “I’ll be right with you,” no water, not even eye contact. Other tables seemed to get attention, but we might as well have been cardboard cutouts propped up at our window seat. The manager at one point made eye contact with us, but darted off to talk to another table. That's when we decided to give ourselves the gift of not dealing with bad service, so we walked away.

Wonderful outdoor seating! I ordered the Americana with over medium eggs and bacon. My mom ordered the Breakfast Tacos. My food was hot and delicious and the breakfast potatoes were particularly tasty. I’m not a fan of multigrain toast though. I had one of the tacos too and they were super yummy and filling. They were also decently spicy but like a flavorful spicy. If I happen to be at Hilldale again, I’d love to stop by and try their dinner!

I come here often with my family and the service is usually good but today I came and I was sat on the upstairs patio and after 25 minutes, nobody had come to take our drink order. I went downstairs and told the host, who did not say sorry or seem sympathetic. My server appeared shortly after and she did not apologize or acknowledge that we had been waiting for 30 minutes without service while employees walked back and forth behind our table. When she brought my coffee, it was lukewarm and did not bring the cream or sugar I requested. Waited only 15 minutes for table. Lunch at 1:30pm on a Tuesday.The host was unpleasant and was having a bad day.Since it was a beautiful day we wanted to be seated on roof. We were told roof was closed. We were than seated to the patio,.Three adults two kids 8 and 4 . Brought to table with missing wood slats. Asked if we could sit elsewhere, was told tables were dirty, when we could see many open tables We were not given kids menus. Asked table next to us if we could borrow their kids menu. I don’t frequently go to chain restaurants but I happened to be in Hilldale area in Madison and decided to grab a bite to eat at this location of Cafe Hollander .

There was no wait and we were immediately seated which was great . Hostess was really nice and pleasant . Our server brought our menus and explained the basics . She was also very nice and did a good job .

Menu had a big beer selection and a variety of pub style food . Many vegetarian and gluten free options as well which was nice to see .

I chose the Sangria to quench my thirst and it was good and very refreshing! I was not very hungry so I got the bruschetta flatbread . I had asked our server if it was enough for one person and she explained it was a good portion . I enjoyed it !

It's very uncommon to find high quality mussels this far north in the United States, and every time I come to this restaurant, I'm wowed by the flavor of these mussels! For my fries, I always pick the basil aioli (fresh and tasty), and if I have the extra spending money I opt for the Tiramisu Martini. I always want to come back even though food is not great, but I like the atmosphere. This is my last time. My mussels were stinky and mushy, not fresh at all. Our server never came to check on our food until we were done with our dinner and I had to wave my server to come. I told her the mussels were not fresh, and she asked what I meant. Nice and smooth with a hint of citrus. Then we had the cheese curds. Came out hot with a great dipping sauce. I had the Scoonie burger. So good! Has this beer cheese aioli on it that was wonderful! I chose sweet potato fries, and they were great too, but i love me a sweet potato fry over normal ones. My friend got the Grilled Cheese Beef Tosti with regular fries. March 2025: We dined upstairs this time and it was really nice! They even have an elevator if you can't do stairs. Elijah W. Gave us top notch service. Some new favorites worth shouting out - soft pretzel bites with bier cheese aioli dip were delicious, cheese curds were very good, Brie Tomato Basil with added bacon was full of flavor, and the Double Smashed Veggie Beet Burger was so unique and tasty! (see picture). Extra dipping sauce (75 cents) are all so good, especially the Blackened Garlic Ranch Aioli dip!! The spicy cucumber salad was a nice GF side dish option. There is a full, separate gluten free menu to order from.

We enjoyed a good breakfast brunch, some meals were better than others. The primary reason for the four star rating is the consistently slow service (approx.45 minutes to get meals after Amanda took our order). Not sure where the bottleneck is? First the good, the Eggs Benedict was fantastic! Tasty, perfectly poached free range eggs! We had the Brew City Benedict and theTraditional Benedict and both were good. The healthy choice Avocado Smorrebrod was very good. The Cinnamon Streusel French Toast was okay, not as good as we thought based on other positive reviews. We found the Americana lacking. Just too small a serving size (see picture). AND they do skimp on the hashbrowns. Why do that? They are really good and an inexpensive item on the plate!

Went for the cheese curds and pretzel bites, but was disappointed in the pretzel bites. The taste did not match their spendy price. The bites did not taste at all like pretzels, more like just plain bread, missing the delicious baking soda taste. They did put Parmesan seasoning on top and provided a garlicky sauce, but it didn’t do much. Cheese curds were pretty good. We only ordered the two items, but were all very full after. The male waiter wearing a hat and glasses should quit if he doesn't want to do the job. I have no idea what made him so self-deprecating. Throughout the meal, he didn't offer any service, not even taking my order or giving me a napkin. Despite this, I still left a 5-yuan tip. I’ve visited this restaurant before and had a mix of experiences, but today didn’t quite meet expectations. I was excited to try the special dish inspired by St. Patrick’s Day, but when I asked if I could swap onions for mushrooms, the server informed me that no modifications were allowed. Just like everywhere these days: expensive as heck. I got two drinks and an entree and my bill was $60 for one person! Anyway, if you get over the bill the drinks are good, the portion size is generous and the food is tasty. They have a nice selection of food options to pick from.

The igloo was freezing, and the heaters were all off when we got in. So with the doors opening for the server and one fan not blowing right, it was like eating in the elements. When we asked for more menus, forgot until asked again. When we asked for crayons, forgot until asked again. When we asked for the bill, forgot until we had to ask again. The server’s personality was awesome, and if he worked on remembering things the first time, he would have been phenomenal. As for paying for an igloo, don’t, it was a waste of money based into how Little effort was put into making it an enjoyable experience. Not to mention, we got into the igloo 15min after our reservation started. It was disappointing.

My server Jeyra seemed to have an attitude. She forgot to refill my friend’s coffee, so I politely asked if she could get her some more coffee.. she responded uh yeah.. we said thank you. Then after we received our food not much longer she asked how our food was. We make content, so I hadn’t had a chance to take a bite yet. Noticed my syrup for my French toast must of been setting in the back for while because it had a thick film over it. But it took over 15 mins to see the server again to ask for more syrup. Didn’t get a chance to tell her the eggs were good. She didn’t seem pleased when I asked for more syrup. Then cleaned the table off with our plates. When she brought the checks out, I was like hey, I didn’t get a chance to tell you about the eggs.. she proceeded to catch an attitude when I wanted to tell her. Like you should of told me earlier. I didn’t get a chance to because she rushes off. I’ve been a server for years. I treat people how I want to be treated and how I’d like to be serviced.

i would give it 4 stars for food but my gf was served a potato chunk that looked like it he’d been in the oven for to long and had the texture of a rock. besides this everything was very good. food was phenomenal and service was fast.

On our recent visit to Madison, our kids suggested Café Hollander. What a delightful experience. Great server—attentive, knowledgeable, accommodating with the littles. Widely varied menu to suit every taste. Delicious entrees, wonderfully presented. And the atmosphere has a cool vibe. You won’t be disappointed.

This place is really hit or miss. Had dinner on 1/18 and as soon as the server messed up a Shirley temple, I knew everything else was going to go downhill. Ordered cheese curds that were very greasy, and really the only thing that was decent. Ordered the bacon avocado chicken wrap without avocado and it still came with it. Let the runner know (since our waiter never came back to check how it was or refill drinks lol) and then it came back out again without the sauce that it comes with… Only asked for no avocado….. Didn’t say anything to the next runner at that point because what’s the point? Send it back twice so the kitchen gets mad? There are better places with better service.

The Madison airport gift shop sells a T-shirt that says ‘Drink Wisconsibly’. Well, as the saying goes … When in Rome! Brunch at Cafe Hollander was fitting, as the menu items came complete with a recommended beer choice - making it feel like a solid choice, even at 10 AM. The tofu scramble was definitely elevated with avocado, jalepeno, and vegan sausage. The breakfast potatoes were also good, yet the pita felt a bit out of place (no topping, spread, or seasoning). Oh, and the beer suggestion was spot on!

I’ve eaten at Cafe Hollander several times and it’s typically very good. Yesterday I ordered the crispy chicken entree and while the quinoa and broccoli side was good, the chicken was far too dry. My girlfriend didn’t eat much of her tomato bisque so I poured it on my chicken and that somewhat helped. Not my best experience there but nonetheless it has a great atmosphere and typically has great food.

The service was extremely poor. Almost felt as the staff is not open to international customers. Food was good. Customer service very VERY POOR from the beginning. A server needs to know the product and if they don’t have a suggestion. Ask a co worker. Very disappointed.

Since my first review, I've become a regular at this place and it is my go to for out-of-town guests. After many visits, we've had consistently good service and great food and drinks, whether we are inside on a table, at the bar or outside in the summer months. The mussels are always a hit. (original review =The food is good, mixed drinks are done properly, beer selection is good, the service is reliable, and if you like a lively, not too quiet atmosphere, this place is for you. The sharing plates are a little bit cheese – heavy, so that’s good if you like lots of cheese, but there are other great choices if you like something lighter. The outdoor globes in the winter are a kitschy fun thing to do, too, but once is probably enough to experience the novelty.)

We recently rented an outdoor dome to celebrate my wife’s 50th birthday. It was really fun to be cozy inside while it was freezing outside. Service and flavor have slipped. I had cheese curds, mussels and sweet potato fries; all three were way too salty. Waitstaff misses the mark with incorrect bill and took asking three times for a to-go container. Better restaurants exist for an after-work meal with coworkers.
