Dear Cafe Zupas Team,

I wanted to share my disappointment with a recent experience at one of your locations. While checking out, I noticed cups of chopped strawberries and a basket of apples displayed near the register. My 2-year-old son saw the apples and sweetly asked, “Mommy, can I have an apple please?” Naturally, I handed him one, assuming they were for sale since they were openly displayed near the checkout area.

When I got to the register and was reviewing our order, the cashier looked confused and said the apples weren’t for sale they were only for desserts. I immediately apologized and explained that my son had already taken a bite, and asked if I could simply pay for it. Instead of showing understanding, both the cashier and the manager responded in a snarky tone, saying I’d have to pay $12 for the apple, which I found absolutely unreasonable.

I told them that was ridiculous and asked if there was another way to resolve it, given that it was an honest mistake by a toddler. They then said they could charge me for an extra topping “that’s $5” and spoke very curtly. Wanting to move on since my son was getting impatient, I agreed. Later, when I looked at the receipt, I saw I was charged for two added proteins at $1.99 each, totaling $3.98. she couldn’t have charged me $1.09 for a “side” bun.

I’m not as upset about the amount as I am about the lack of compassion and customer service. Accidents happen, especially with small children, and a little understanding would have gone a long way. I hope you’ll take this feedback seriously and use it as an opportunity to ensure your team handles similar situations with more empathy and professionalism in the future.

Great food that always tastes fresh and flavorful. Their salads are especially good.
This spot can get pretty busy during lunch crowds and the modern interior can make it rather hard to hear people without shouting, but it's a nice place in Greenway.
Ordering can be a bit tedious sometimes, as the assembly line-type setup means that I sometimes have to repeat my order to 3-4 different people, but overall isn't the worst.

I asked for two eggs, but there was only one-and-a-half in the bowl, which, I guess you could just call a salad at this point. It was good food, but dressing, 1.5 eggs, and a quarter of an avocado is certainly not worth $12

One of the best places in entire Madison to enjoy fresh mediterranean food either at the outlet or to go. Quantity and quality is of the highest standards. I always visit this store and enjoy the food. Outlet closes at 2030 everyday and hence pl be early if you don't want to get disappointed.

Excellent fast casual. Brisket grilled cheese was top notch. The chicken enchilada chili was hearty and just enough heat. The chocolate covered strawberries were a nice touch. Turkey bacon avocado got two thumbs up. A little pricey but great food. Would return.

Every time I'm in Madison/Middleton area, which seems to be at least once a year, I eat at Cafe Zupas. The food is fresh and tasty. It's clean and bright. Staff is ok. Not super friendly but not certainly not rude. I just like how there is a good variety and it doesn't leave feeling like you just ate fast food.

Vegetarian options are labelled. Vegan or GF options need to be inferred. The staff were not knowledgeable on what and was not vegan, I had to look it up. I usually give small business a slight pass for not having these things labelled, but come on. This is a slightly nicer fast food restaurant with TV menus, it is not difficult to add vegan or gf labels to the menu.

Vegetarians are living nice here believe me. Vegans, not so much. Apparently their bread is not vegan. I say apparently because i could only go off what was online, again the staff had no clue. Usually i give a pass but come on, you guys are a chain.

I got the chickpea soup, which was actually quite pleasant (beyond the crazy 8 dollar price point). I think vegans can get that or one of the salads. It is absolutely insane that a soup, salad and kitchen spot has 2 options for vegans. I’m usually not this annoying but we can’t have vegan bread?

I hate to give this rating because the staff were quite pleasant and kind, but it’s just frustrating.

I went in today wed,April 23,2025. I came in hungry and was instantly greeted with a hello and Smiles!! The prices were good and the food was amazing!! I don't know the guy who served me or the two women who helped but they deserve a raise. They were busy but everything and everyone was on point. I will gladly keep going back. It was such a good and amazing experience! great aervice and great food. me and my kids recently visited and tried their new chocolate dubai strawberries, and let me tell you that it didn’t disappoint at ALL. The employee who treated us was so nice to me and my kids her name is alicia and she was so welcoming! I would honestly come again and buy because it’s worth my money. What happened to this place ?? Got the avocado ceaser salad… 29 grams of protein it advertises. There was two small pieces of avocado and maybe.. 1/8 cup of chicken. Was almost all lettuce. I eat here almost every week. The food is good. My "gripe" is super petty but when you go somewhere weekly and with your order add 5+ chocolate covered strawberries (yes I said 5+ and yes I eat every single one) and every time, without fail, every strawberry 🍓 is the size of a penny bouncy ball it gets old. Fast. People are great and always friendly. Just wish I'd get a huge 🍫🍓 at some point :)

Very disappointed with the portions of my sandwich, looks NOTHING like the image in the menu. It was literally absolutely pathetic looking and left me hungry and wanting more. It tasted amazing so unfortunately it was just a tease of a sandwich. It would of taken the content of 5 sandwiches before it started to look anything like the pictures, that's how miniscule the portion was for my sandwich. The second issue was that I asked for baby butter lettuce in my salad and I got the chopped mixed greens. The sticker on my box shows baby butter lettuce right on the package and it still managed to be wrong. The salad was tasty as well but it also lacked a valid portion. I spent about $18 for all this and did NOT get my money's worth.

every time I've been here I've ordered curbside. every time (minus one) I've waited 20+ minutes after clicking "I'm here!" before going in, where it's immediately clear that they had absolutely 0 intention of actually bringing out the food. if you're not going to do curbside that's fine but take it off the website. I avoid going in because the lighting is a huge migraine trigger. :(

I’m new to the area and I LOVE this place and highly recommend it. The staff go out of their way to make sure you receive quality food that you’ll enjoy.
I placed an online order for curbside pickup. While ordering I failed to schedule the time for pick up and so by default the order was ready in 10mins (ASAP). I called up the cafe and asked if I could schedule the pickup for another time. The lady said I can but the order was already prepared. She then goes out of her way and says that she’ll put my order on a heated platform so that the soup doesn’t go cold. I thanked her for the same.

Upon receiving my order, the lady came up to me and mentioned that because they prepared my meal quick and I came to pick it up late, by the time I was there, the salad went bad so they made the order all over again and discarded the old order FREE OF CHARGE and with a smile on the face. This gesture truly made me realize that the staff are super customer oriented and are extremely accommodating. Hence I decided to give the place a review.
Not to mention, the food is amazing (my favorite is the strawberry harvest salad-probably the best salad I’ve eaten so far and the chicken pesto sandwich) and is worth the price. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I was a regular customer of this place but not after my last visit.. The visit before last the avocado in the salad was old and tasted rotten and the last time I found a long hair inside the sandwich, I went and asked for the manager I showed him a bite of the sandwich that my husband had chewed and the hair was inside and he said I'm sorry I'll make you another one I told him I don't want to because my husband won't eat it anymore, and really we left all the food as it was on the tray and left.

I ate at this Cafe Zupa today and ordered the chicken noodle soup. It didn’t have any flavor. I tried adding salt & pepper. Then it just tasted like salt & pepper. I then tried adding crackers to no avail. It was basically water with some noodles and about 10 very small size pieces of chicken. The chicken tasted like it had all of the flavor boiled out of it. It was also served lukewarm. The roll was just out of the freezer and frozen. I was going to take it home and let it thaw. My husband just threw it away. The best part was the chocolate covered strawberry. I don’t recommend the chicken noodle soup. My husband & his mom got different soups and theirs were ok. We will try another place next time. Mine & my husband’s soups are not listed in the menu below to click on.

Salads I purchased yesterday had rotting avocados, and were sparse on ingredients besides lettuce. This is not remotely the normal quality of food I receive here. Also, the staff appeared to have turned over; the staff working seemed untrained - unfamiliar with the salad ingredients and dressings. They seemed to have difficulty keeping my order of 2 meals together. They were not the level of professionally friendly that makes this a great restaurant. As a regular customer, this experience was extremely disappointing.

Update 11/28/22
The food quality has improved since original review. However, tonight and on my previous visit staff the following have happened on both visits: mixed orders up and asking customers to help them identify what food belongs to who. There is not hand sanitizer in the sanitizer stations. The small cup lids are empty. On tonight’s visit, many other items are next to empty. And my water cup leaked out the bottom (without me drinking anything) so there is water all over the tray.

Location continues to have a lot of staff turnover. Tonight I visited for the same salad I normally get. A new staff member was making the salad. I was directed to the cashier. While waiting, the cashier had to leave her station to assist. The salad appeared to be made with incorrect ingredients. As I was watching from afar the staff picked ingredients out and replaced with new ingredients. While this might be seen as a cost-savings to the store, it does not take the customer into regard. I cannot eat many ingredients without becoming ill. The staff seemed to have no concept/training about food allergens and cross-contamination. I asked for the salad to be remade and the cashier did not understand English. She had to have another staff member assist (a man who normally makes the salads accurately). He remade the salad, and I am grateful for that. Went to get water and the dispenser would not turn off after multiple tries. I am unsure why the restaurant is opening another location in town this week when there are repeated issues with this location.

Tonight’s salad was good but the vinegar in the vinaigrette dressing was very fumy. One of the workers on break had a female friend visiting who was wearing a very low cut sports bra that was distasteful for a restaurant. One compliment - this is the first time I’ve seen the dining room area exceptionally clean in about 2 years.

I stopped back to Cafe Zupas this week. The quality of the food seemed to be an improvement and was fresher than it has been in some time. However, the salad price has also gone up. The condiments were well-stocked this time; it’s been a long time since I’ve seen this. I received my food on a tray with a huge chip in it. I’m routinely asked by the cashier what my order is on my visits, rather than this being passed on by staff. I sat outside and the table was dirty with several large spots on it. It consistently feels like there are a couple of steady workers doing most of the work, rather than this being a “team” staff who works well together.

Food poisoning!! Just to be clear, I have no food allergies or food intolerances or previous conditions. I’ve ordered the same meal from other establishments and never had a problem. It was either the Wisconsin cauliflower soup or the BBQ Brisket sandwich. Save yourself an urgent care trip and bill. The customer service was 5 stars, but customer service doesn’t take away 12 hours of excruciating pain and medical expenses. Skip these items or this restaurant altogether!

I'd heard about this place for a while and finally decided to try it on a less-busy day. I usually don't go to sandwich places because i can always make a better one with walmart deli stuff, and this wasn't much better. The wheat bread was way too soft to have any complex grains in it. At $13, a little pricey too but worth the wisconsin cauliflower and chocolate strawberry, which were both delicious. The bread roll i could ignore, its a dough ball and not needed.

They offered avocado, so i took it, and then put tortilla strips in my soup. I thought the avocado would be included, but silly me, why would the only produce to never inflate in price be free? The combo is also a dollar more than what's on the menu. i think some sandwiches cost more, but i have no idea because the text is way too small. All that plus tax made it $18, then they asked for a tip at the register. So I'm never returning again, because its a sandwich and I'm not running a charity.

Nobody here was on break or had any work shoes, working class people were not here today. Seems like a good kids place, which is rare. Remember souper salad? They had an entire buffet, but a slice of mousse cake is $5 here so i guess that's the same.

The food was great, but I waited about 15-20 minutes outside for a curbside order that had been ready for 15-20 minutes already and ended up having to go inside. The order was ready to run, but nobody ran it out to me. I would’ve just picked it up inside to begin with if I realized how long I’d have wait for the order. Personally, I feel like an apology for the wait time was kind of the least they could’ve done, but I didn’t even get that.

I was just at Middleton location. I am not 1 to complain. I found a small hair in my Pesto Chicken sandwich. I walked up to the counter, tried to show it to the clerk & she didn't even get close enough to see it in my fingers that still had Pesto on them and l was told it's not hair, it's chicken. I said it's a hair, was again told it was chicken, without her looking at it! I left it at the counter and said l'm done, l will never be back and walked out! I have only ever done 1 other review - went to a laundromat to wash something big and left a review about large black mold areas inside the top of the big washers on the rubber area that the water has to splash on to get the soap and softener into the wash.

I'm a blue collar guy and really don't gravitate towards these modern yuppie type of joints, but this was one of the best meals I've had in awhile. Pleasantly surprised! The grilled cheese was soft and delicious with some amazing pesto type thing spreaded on it, and the tomato soup was very creamy and flavorful. I enjoy their Choose 2 meals, where there is the choice between soups, salads and sandwiches. They have a lot of different options and the ability to build your own to your liking. I appreciate you can substitute avocado or quinoa in place for a plant based friendly diet. The restaurant is a favorite in the area. Service is good. Eating in is extremely crowded. Food is quick,even with the long lines that are always there. I love the mushroom soup and others I go with love the lobster soup. My only complaint is that the Chipotle salad is always heavy on their dressing. I have not tried their sandwiches.

One of my favorite lunch spots. You can see the fresh ingredients they use for your food. My usual order is the Pesto Chicken with one of their delicious house made soups. Lots of seating and I like the openness of the dining room. You can order ahead on their App if you are in a hurry. Definitely would recommend giving it a try.

Always have enjoyed Zupas but last time we got takeout was a bad experience. My Italian sandwich had very little meat to the point that there was more bread than anything. They also gave me the wrong soup, even though it was marked and checked off properly. Furthermore, instead of chocolate dipped strawberries, they gave us a strange half dipped hard cookie. After going there often since they opened, not sure when we will be back.

just WOW! had the lobster bisque (perfect, great level of spice, good amount of lobster meat, perfect ratio of creaminess) and turkey bacon avocado sandwich which was had the perfect ratio and combination of ingredients. Honestly hands down, this is my family's new favorite spot!

The food is delicious and amazing, the staff very polite and helpful. I eat there every time I go to Madison. I love the Thai chicken salad, pumpkin chorizo soup, and strawberry creme brulee. Just a wonderful, healthy place to eat.

A Utah based chain that I would put on par with noodles and company. Soup and salads seem to be the best bet, the bread used for sandwiches was too soft imo to be paired with soup (which might be a big plus if you have dental problems!). Value was great!! Staff were so befuddled when we ordered a kid’s meal (for our kid, who was present) that I thought it was a soft opening but looking online it appears that they’ve been there for years? The Mac and cheese was a soup with 6 noodles floating in it which was confusing (honestly not sure if this was a mistake or that’s just how it comes).

Thursday at 11:30 a.m. is the beginning of busy to-go orders. This made eating at the restaurant harder to do. I'm amazed they were able to keep things straight... sort of.

My sandwich order got lost and had to be remade. My Wisconsin Cauliflower soup was ok. Just not sure the complimentary chocolate covered strawberry justified the $17.28 price.

The food is good, but expensive. Mobile orders are usually ready about 10 minutes after they say they will be ready. I get a notification that it’s ready, but they don’t put it out for a long time. Clearly, they are trying to trick some corporate metric. I’ve learned to not show up on time because it’s never ready .

Tried for the first time tonight. Ordered a small ‘make your own’ salad and small cup of southwest chili soup. Everything was excellent and had no idea the meal came with rolls and chocolate dipped Strawberries! What a nice surprise! Staff was trying very hard to keep up with the dinner rush and was still patient.

Second year going to school fundraiser at this location. Last year we ordered online and they never notified food was ready so we waited a really long time while food was sitting on the shelf ready to be picked up. This year ordered 4 sandwiches and when we started to order the first one, they said to go to the register and tell them what we want. So we ordered 4 different sandwiches but were given 4 of the first sandwich we had started to order. The only solution offered was to get back in line. We spent $50 and the kids didn’t like the sandwiches we were given since they wanted what we ordered.
