Ordered breakfast burger and birria bowl. Food took 40 minutes to come out. Waitress kept apologizing. Wish manager came out and said something to us. Had to ask for it to go because we couldn't wait any longer.
The breakfast burger was cold but tasted alright.
The birria bowl was boring. A little bland and dry for birria. The salsa Verde was the best thing in the bowl. Nice and spicy.
I had lots of time to watch other plates pass. I'd come back to try their sweet breakfast dishes. They looked great... but maybe not come back for Mexican food (coming from a Mexican.)
Overall spent $48 for not the best experience.

I have been a regular visitor of Canela Cafe and always had a great experience so I am writing this with a lot of disappointment. My friend and I came to Canela Cafe today at 9:30 and enquired if the early bird special was still available. The server informed us that it is only till 9 but we could get it this one time. We really appreciated that, but would have been happy to switch as well if it wasn't available - we didn't insist at all. As we were not hungry, we did not want anything else and had decided to split one meal. When we informed the server that we only want one meal he was extremely judgemental and openly so, and did not interact with us properly throughout the rest of the meal. This really spoilt the experience for us. I do not know if anyone at Canela reads this but if you do please look into the matter. It is not right for customers to have this experience - there is after all no rule that people have to order multiple menu items.

Second time here. The place is tucked among several other businesses and restaurants. There are several patio tables out front. The front is all glass, which brings in plenty of natural light. Once inside, you are greeted at the hostess desk, and there are a couple of different seating areas. The design is fresh, modern, and clean.

We got a booth and were immediately greeted by our server. We ordered our drinks (latte and hot tea) and then quickly followed up with our food: Very Berry French Toast and Avocado Toast (with poached eggs). It didn’t take long for the food to arrive. Everything was the right temperature, very flavorful, well presented, and good portions. The French toast had excellent textures (coated with Cinnamon Toast Crunch), and the poached eggs were perfectly cooked. I also liked the feta cheese on the avocado.

We received great service the entire time, with the small exception that I had to remind my server for more hot water. Definitely a place I would return to.

Sadly, this was once my favorite breakfast spot, and now I will never be back. My husband and I ate here all the time, we hadn't been here in probably a year so we were excited come eat some breakfast! Unfortunately the food quality and the service was really bad. The cooks clearly don't taste the food before it is served. Here's how it went:
My husband and I came here on August 15th, around 1pm. As soon as we sat down the waitress was kind of aggressive and not the best at pacing. We felt rushed/pressured to order our drinks immediately as she was handing us the menus. I asked what kind of drinks were offered and she just pointed to the menu that she just handed to me, feeling pressured I ordered the cold brew. If I had more time to look I would have ordered a smoothie if I had known about it. After that she asked us 3 times in the span of 5 minutes if we were ready to order, and we were like no, we just got here.
We both ordered the Americana. The potatoes looked extremely old, if I was the server I would not have brought those plates to the table, they looked really bad. I hate having to complain but we told her the potatoes were old and stale, so I asked if I could just get some toast instead. This question made the waitress completely freeze she didn't know that to do. She said she could take my plate and ask the manager but that would mean my husband would have food while I have to wait longer, so I just gave up and asked for a side of toast. Toast is so easy and yet it took forever. When the toast arrived my eggs were cold.
The manager came out to talk to us. She acknowledged that the potatoes looked bad, but insisted the potatoes were always cooked fresh to order. Just looking at the potatoes they were obviously precooked early this morning and then they throw it on the grill for 30 seconds. The manager and the server clearly have no idea how the food is prepared in their kitchen. Towards the end of the meal the manager brought out brand new potatoes, that we didn't ask for, and they were severely undercooked and raw in the middle. The cook AND the manager didn't even taste them to make sure they were perfect before serving them. Quality checks are a simple yet crucial step especially if it's a remake. At the end when we got the bill, they charged me $3 for my toast! I didn't even say anything I just paid and left knowing I will never come back to this place, it's so sad. Going out to breakfast is supposed to be a relaxing experience, and this was stressful for us. I could have made a much better breakfast at home.

Had an awesome breakfast here! Our waitress Lima was super friendly and made us feel right at home. I had the Shakshuka—so good! Rich, flavorful, and just the right amount of spice. A while we were in Milwaukee, WI, visiting a friend, he recommended going to Canela Cafe for breakfast. The atmosphere on the inside was will lit and full of hungry, happy customers. The host were great and got us seated outside ASAP.

They had great breakfast special, along with yummy morning mimosas. I ordered the Strawberry Nutella Crepe, while my husband tried the pancakes and several other delicious looking and tasting dishes.

You can tell that the neighborhood in this area has been upgraded a lot in the past several years. It is a really cool spot close to campus. I highly recommend stopping by and grabbing yourself some breakfast. I will definitely be coming back here the next time I am in Milwaukee.

Cute place that wasn't super busy on a Sunday brunch, but still with constant stream of people coming in and out. First impressions is that the staff looked pretty gloomy overall. No one smiled or greeted us, but were pretty much matter of factly standing there, and overall not happy looking about having a big group (of 12) to set up for outside (we asked for outside, since the weather was so nice).

The outside set up was ok. The tables were smallish and lightweight, and the umbrellas were bumping on each other so we couldn't keep them up without them touching each other and somehow making the table lopsided when we tried. Not a big deal, and we just ended up folding up all the umbrellas and pulling out sunglasses.

Our server came and took our orders, and was quick and efficient about it, but again, no smiles or welcoming, but rather brusque and a tad annoyed like.
So up to here, not too pleased, and a little miffed because I felt like we weren't really welcome. But after our server took our orders, things turned positive.

Our server totally changed pace and came back often to look in on us and keep our coffee mugs filled, and to make sure we had everything. She also was right on it when we requested things like ketchup, and even though we were outside, she made sure to bring everything out very timely. I guess it just takes a while for things to warm up. Overall, I thought she did a wonderful job despite my first impressions.

The food - was good.

Steak Breakfast Bowl
Hany and I shared cuz we had actually already had breakfast (long story). I asked for the potatoes on the side (keto), and they brought both potatoes and eggs on the side, plus an extra plate (thoughtful!!). The mix was very tasty. Hany said the potatoes were meh, and I agreed, but I think it was because it was put on the side rather than mixed in with the rest of the dish. Totally on me. I would absolutely get this dish again.

A friend did this dish because she has egg allergies. She said it was good, but a little less spiced than she has had before, but would order again.

Canela Supreme Pancakes (GF)
Looked delicious and tasted delicious. He said the peanut butter, honey, cinnamon sauce was scrumptious.

Pancakes
Personally, I thought the 4 layers of this regular pancakes simply dusted with powdered sugar looked better than the supreme version, but it could be because they were more fluffy, not being gluten free. It was apparently just as tasty, too, cuz friend ate half of it, after finishing his bowl of steak bowl!

Steak & Eggs
It was cooked well, but friend actually liked it more medium-rare. The server forgot to ask how he likes his steak. (Like I said, she didn't turn out to be stellar until after the orders were in for some reason)

Blueberry waffle
The single waffle was missing the powdered sugar and looked pretty underwhelming compared to the delicious looking pancakes, especially with the fresh blueberries forming a single layer, and kind of disappearing into the waffle holes. Definitely not camera friendly and not something I would get again for $15.

Omelet
Forgot to ask what kind of omelet she got, but friend's omelet looked great, fluffy and filled. The side of fruits also looked very fresh.

Smoothie
Friend says it had the taste! But it was watery, more like juice than a smoothie. Bummer.

Overall, I'm giving the place 4 stars without considering the initial impressions because I feel that how I leave a place is important and I definitely left feeling well taken care of and like I would return. But next time, I will sit inside despite the gorgeous weather cuz I like a solid table and chairs. And I would get the steak bowl again. But I would definitely skip the waffle.

Went with my Boyfriend for a day after Valentines Brunch. It was amazing. These are the best pancakes I've had in years. The size of the portions was generous, and the mimosas we ordered were great! I always love Canela. Fair warning, the wait time for a table on the weekends can be long. 45+ minutes. But I really don't mind cause the food and service is great.
Only down side for me personally is that they don't serve lattes or espresso drinks. They do serve hot and cold coffees from Stone Creek, but no lattes. That being said I have gotten lattes at Stone Creek and then gone to Canela. They don't seem to mind if you bring a coffee in.

This was my first time here. My mom and I wanted to try somewhere new and we were not disappointed. We both had the pancakes which were fluffy and very good. Canela is our favorite brunch spot in milwaukee. No one beats their pancakes!! Friendly service, delicious food, and great mimosas, bloodies, etc. we always recommend whenever someone asks for a place to go.

Lovely little brunch spot. They had a good variety on the menu but its not overwhelming which is nice. I recommend the shakshuka- it's a light and hearty option. The monte Cristo sandwich is HUGE, just FYI.
The staff is friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is bright and colorful, very inviting.

We come here every time we’re in Milwaukee for brunch. Doesn’t disappoint. We always get pancakes without powdered sugar. I’ve tried so many of their items it’s hard to remember them all. Most recently I had the three amigos. It was delicious and filing. Be careful with the salmon Benedict. It really is a piece of salmon (not lox lol ) but it was a little dry for my taste. The coffee is good. Mimosas are 2 for one on Tuesdays.

Service is a hit or miss. depends on who you get. I think our favorite waitress is no longer working here cause we haven’t seen her in a while. The waitress most recently was ok but we’ve had some that were not as good.

The food was so perfect. I came here with a large group and we ordered a variety of meals. They all have unique flavors and are all tasty and delicious. The French toast and waffles are great for kids and there is a great variety for all types of eaters. Would recommend.

I went in for breakfast expecting high prices and small portions. Wow, was I ever wrong. I got the breakfast burrito. It was excellent and huge. Our entire party of 10 had fantastic food. There was so much that I skipped lunch and had a tiny dinner. You can't go wrong here. Definitely stop in.

Phenomenal brunch! The Oreo pancakes were pretty dang good! The omelettes are delicious!!! Also, the staff was super friendly and I will definitely be coming back. Highly recommend!

I was disappointed in my chicken sandwich. Tasted old and microwaved. They put the bread with the sandwich and it arrived soggy. The bacon seemed gross and hard. The sauce was ketchup and mayo. Very grosd

Canela always hits. It is a favorite brunch place. The blueberry waffles were so delicious. I got a savory crepe because I was feeling adventurous and I really enjoyed it! Mimosas were delicious and my husband enjoyed his omelette.

The menu is very extensive so it can be overwhelming, but good for picky-eaters! They do have specials so that helps narrow things down.

So we ordered the chicken and biscuits, French toast, banana bread, pancakes and avocado toast. The chicken and biscuits with the gravy was really filling, damn near will put you in a coma at the table. The avocado toast, was very jam packed. The two poached eggs, the heirloom tomatoes, feta cheese and chunky avocado was heavy. One egg would’ve been good enough, and maybe if the tomatoes were cut a little smaller it would’ve been better. The bread could hardly hold all the weight and moisture. The pancakes were unfortunately dry. The banana bread was good can’t go wrong with some good banana bread. Overall I probably wouldn’t go back…I can say the atmosphere and service made up for everything else.

Given all the rave reviews I was disappointed. Staff was great, but food was less than mediocre. My friend and I both ordered one of their benedicts. Both were pretty flavorless with hollandaise sause that tasted like flour and water.

Just ate at The Canela Cafe and it was a wonderful experience all around. The pancakes were to absolutely die for and the rest of our food was also delicious! Our waitress Jodi was exceptional and a great time was had by all. We shall be back!!!
