Atmosphere is casual, comfortable, food was fantastic, we had salmon,risotto,Brussel sprouts...encrusted walleye with a blanc wine sauce with rice pilaf& asparagus. Everything was done very well, so well seasoned & presented. Really impressed. 10/10 our new favorite restaurant in La Crosse! Bartender Patrick is super attentive and kind and made great recommendations, I went with the herb crusted Walleye which was their special for the night, super yummy sauce under the wild rice. My husband went for the clam chowder and the filet mignon. His steak was better than any steak we’ve had downtown. Chef came out and asked how everything was and thanked us for coming. Very homey and friendly with a great view. The salad plate was cold to the touch and the dinner plate was hot kept everything nice and steamy. Just a ton of attention to detail and it made it such a great experience. I’m telling everybody ☺️ rock on guys!!!!

All of those can be found at Castaways on the Island! Our waiter was very engaging and quite resourceful when asked for recommendations on drinks and items on the menu! He helped us match our drinks to our likes so we could try something new. As our meals started to come to the table he was sure to check in and be sure we had all that we needed. Even the cook came out to check on our meals and be sure all was well. My mahi mahi and risotto was wonderful, it was fresh and full of flavor!

We will defiantly be going back again!! Thank you for a GREAT girls night out!

This was the perfect spot to have dinner with friends while enjoying the great atmosphere on the river. Our waiter was fun and intuitive. I ordered the scallops and they were cooked to perfection. The chef came out to check on us, which I thought was very cool. To round out the meal, we shared a delicious chocolate lava cake with ice cream. A good time was had by all. Upon walking into Castaways on French Island WI you immediately feel like you are family. Alea as the hostess greeted us as we walked in and Pat the bartender and sever immediately asked how we were doing and said we have an amazing treat in store for you. We settle on wine, a ceaser salad and the special of the day for dinner. The special being slice whole roasted beef shoulder filet with malt red wine gas-trek sauce with asparagus and mushroom risotto. What an amazing and mouthwatering delight this was. Chef Taite came and checked on us with the enthusiasm that only comes with someone that has a passion for what he does. Dessert was a hazelnut crème brûlée. All I can say is the owner Dan and all his staff deserve in the world of hockey what would be considered a hat trick! Ambiance, staff, and really family made this a must to keep coming back to.

Overall had a really great experience! The staff were fantastic, food came very quick, and portions were massive. We went for Friday fish and were surprised that the restaurant wasn't swamped. We LOVED that we could talk with our friends at a normal volume. Alcoholic beverages seemed a little pricey but the food was very reasonable for quality and quantity. We will definitely be back!

Had dinner last night at Castaway’s on French Island! It was $4 martini night so of course I had to stop by! I got the special: Ribeye with creamy horseradish, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. It was delicious! For dessert, I got the chocolate lava cake. Amazing! Afterwards, I went across the street to Tom Sawyer’s for a drink with a view. The food, drinks, and service at both of the restaurants were all amazing and I will definitely be going back soon!

I have lived nearby here for around 10 years and I never knew what I was missing out on. Castaways is a far too hidden gem. Before I went in, I expected this too be like a supper club or a bar but boy was I wrong. It was so much more than that. Upon entering, I walked up to the bar to decide what I’d want to drink and was immediately surprised at their liquor selection. Very nice quality. My second surprise was their menu. I was immediately drawn to the risotto. I ordered the Mahi Mahi with risotto, zucchini and house made French onion soup. The soup was divine and served with a slice of baguette with cheese rather than the bowl covered in cheese. I liked this take on French onion soup. There were lots of onions still in the soup which I also appreciated. I could gave been satisfied with that alone but the rest was great too! I unfortunately had to leave right after the meal was served (due to my own poor time management) so I had just enough time to take a bite or two and had to save the rest for home and ate it at room temperature but it was still great. My extremely picky daughter ordered a huge burger and gobbled the whole thing up with only a few fries left. I’m excited to come back and try more of their treats. Looking forward to ordering a side of truffle fries next time.

I don’t know what’s happened to this place, but they really don’t deserve one star if there was a zero they would get it. I was here this summer everything was great. Don’t know who’s running this place had to ask the waitress for our waters five time my brother steak was so full of fat. It was supposed to be a crusted. New York strip no crust just threw the gravy on it dried potatoes mashed potatoes didn’t give them butter they can’t even get the burgers to the right people nor can the cook read an order correctly. , I will never come back. Highly disappointed. It’s a shame that it’s gone downhill used to be a great place. You need a manager here and not servers who lean against the bar and don’t take care of their patrons and somebody that can actually cook.

Coming from someone who used to run and manage restaurants this would’ve never of been OK in my restaurant. Not even sure if there’s anyone in charge here ask for manager couldn’t get one and I don’t wanna hear that you’re short staffed because you got for weight staff two bartenders and the weight staff is leaning on the bar

My wife and I dined at Castaway's On the Island on May 13, 2023.
This was our third time dining there. The food was good, but not great. Our server was pleasant, but inattentive. Enjoyed chatting at the bar more than taking care of her table. We I received the check, it has a line item called: Tkt Discounts. This was NOT a discount! This was a fee added for credit card transactions. I paid with a debit card, which by the Durbin Act, CANNOT be assessed a processing fee. When I mentioned this to our server, she gave me a deer in the headlights look and said she could do nothing about it! The only thing I can do is no longer patronize Castaways.

Always saw this place and wanted to stop by but was very disappointed when we actually got the chance to. The food was good but very overpriced for what you got. I got a well done burger and fries. The burger came out rare. We thought it was a misunderstanding so took it back back inside to ask if something could be done. They refried the same partially eaten burger patty which seems very unsanitary and when it came back we cut into it to check and the middle of the the patty was still quite bloody. We didn’t say anything and just cut it up to give it to our dog. The server was extremely rude to not just us but the the surrounding tables as well. Would not recommend wasting your money and we will not be coming back.

Tried Castaways for the first time and won't be returning. Drinks and food took forever to come to our table, and it was not busy with other patrons at the time. There was some mold on the orange slice garnishing my drink, and the drink itself tasted off (rancid), so I only drank 1/3 of it. Our salads came out only 2 minutes before our main course, not leaving enough time to enjoy them before the hot food came. We all had the batter fried fish, and either the batter or fry oil was not right, because it tasted like fried chicken instead of fish. In addition, the menus were single sheets of paper that had been laminated, and were quite plain and very tattered around the edges. That would be fine at a low end burger joint, but when you are asking such high prices for your food, this is not the type of menu you should be presenting to your guests.
