We came here for a birthday dinner and left so disappointed. Our waitress was never around, and we had to flag down a different waiter to finish out service. My steak was dry, undercooked, and completely lacked flavor — and not a picky eater at all, so that says a lot. My partner ordered the pork shank, which was the driest thing she’d ever eaten. It had no flavor, wasn’t tender at all, and came out charred black. For a $148 bill, the food was extremely mediocre. The only thing even halfway decent were the drinks. This was supposed to be a special dinner, but it ended up being such a letdown and we left still hungry. Would not recommend, especially for an occasion.

Gotta tell you all. These pop up ideas that Chef Sean comes up with are lit! The Lobster night was awesome. Had the Surf and Turf but I should have had the Surf and Surf! Seafood, seafood, seafood! Super friendly service. We came in quick, passing by travelling for lunch, called 20 minutes before and ordered 4 plates ahead to arrive and sit down. Th waitress was already all set waiting for us and jus set the table with all the plates ready to go. She was super friendly. The food was good, I wouldn't say it's the freshest farm to table type quality but the combination of the tastes and ingredients was so well thought through and gives you an awesome culinary experience. Fries we're good, better than chips. Salad we ordered with dressing apart which was a good idea because the dressing is good but also very thick and oily. Burgers were really tasty. Bruschetta was interesting and I recommend!
Parking is on the street by the hotel, not sure if hotel parking can be used since restaurant seems to be part of it. Bathrooms available and clean. Prices were fair and options were good. I recommend this place !

This was our second visit to Char - both times were exceptional experiences! The food selection is very diverse & flavor of food was incredible. Service was very prompt & our waiter, Jacob, was friendly & very attentive. This last time we ordered the diver scallops, which were huge & tasted fantastic, as well as the charcuterie board, which had a great selection of meats & cheese. The water tastes amazing!

Easter Brunch at Char Grillhouse

This year we opted to do a brunch after church with just the two of us and noticed Char had a four course meal! We started off with a Bloody Mary and blackberry bramble for drinks. Definitely an excellent Bloody Mary. We shared the focaccia bread basket to start. The bread was a little gooey and dense but the garlic butter was delicious. For our second course we both got Caesar salads which were good but the crutons were a bit too hard. The main course for me was the Denver omelette with Parmesan potatoes and Tyler got the steak and eggs. The omelette had this amazing smoked pulled pork and it was awesome! The steak was good too. Finally, we had the lemon curd and carrot cake trifle for dessert. Both were good and unique.

Overall, a good brunch! Char usually is a hit and miss every time with a few standout dishes and a few flops. Our waitress was very sweet even though the kitchen messed up two of our dishes but it was worth experiencing and we would certainly go back 😊

So first off, the positive, the appetizers were excellent. The Korean Wings and the Truffle Fries, great. Now when it comes to my order. I ordered an Umami Burger. Menu states (I am paraphrasing) Spinach Greens, Parmesan Truffle Mayo, Smoked Gouda, Tomato Bacon Jam, Crispy Shitake Mushrooms on a Brioche Bun. Sounds great right? Well to my surprise when I pick this burger up it starts to drip something on my plate, something golden and sticky. Honey ... Now can someone please tell me why the chef would put Honey on an Umami Burger? If its not on the menu, why are you trying to jazz it up. This completely ruined my meal. Thanks for nothing ... worst 19 dollars I have ever spent on a burger that was NOT as described.

When we walked in there was a group of 4 employees at the hostess stand. Not one acknowledged us and they continued talking. After a minute one very nice dark haired lady in a black and white dress helped us to our table. She and the drink were the only redeeming factors of the evening. She sat us and we waited, and we waited... and we waited. About 15 minutes into being seated the waiter showed up and told us he apologized for the wait he was being spoken to in the back by his manager and it held him up. We got water and ordered a drink - which he didn't submit to the bar for another 15 minutes. There were only two other tables with people who had already been served and seemed like they already had separate waiters so .. not entirely sure where he went. Finally got the drink which again was good, Strawberry Rubarb Gin Fizz was a solid choice it turns out. When we finally got to order food he acted surprised we were ready to order - granted we were never told there were specials or anything because he hadn't actually talked to us at all really at this point. We both got Umami Burgers because they sounded really good. They were not and it took a long, long time to get them. It was supposed to have crispy mushrooms and Jalapeño tomato jam, along with the other ingredients mentioned. However those two specific things that sounded great - weren't there. It was just mushrooms and jam but super fruity jam absent of any pepper or Jalapeño like hint of any kind. It was one texture of mush and one flavor of sweet the whole way through. It was also supposed to have a cabbage slaw which we got some pickled radish thing instead I think? Certainly was not cabbage of any kind. We would have told the waiter but he was gone.. like forever.
So long infact he never came back to refill drinks, ask how things were or even say hi. We tried to pay the bill at the bar when we were done and no one could find him so we had to wait for quite a while just for someone to figure out how the hell we were supposed to pay and how much. Keep in mind we were being super nice the whole time because we didn't want any issues.. we just no longer wanted to be there. As we were leaving that same lady at the host station apologized for the wait on the bill and I said thank you but it's not your fault and she just looked sad. She and the drink were the only positives and I hope she gets credit for being a good employee. I would list the waiters name but I honestly don't know if he ever even said his name. This came recommended and we were going to go for date nights if the quick burger before a movie was a success. It was not. Do not recommend. The poor couple next to us only had drinks and no food order by the time we left and we got there at like 4:30 maybe a bit earlier and left around 6 they probably got there around.. 5? How is that even a thing?

While in the area, a google search was performed for a place for dinner. Char Grillhouse comes up… the 15 minute drive was nothing and well worth the drive.

I started off with the Tomato Bisque… what a fantastic flavor experience - creamy flavor of roasted tomatoes and seasoning. The best I have enjoyed so far … it was so flavorful I asked to meet the chef … think he was very surprised after the handshake. The onion soup was equally delicious, wife enjoyed that.

I enjoyed the filet mignon mashed potatoes and a perfectly seasoned Demi-Glacé. Perfectly prepared and seasoned filet.

My wife loved her BBQ ribs .. I tasted the sauce and it was very good.

I would also suggest enjoying The Wisconsin Old Fashioned… (mine was whiskey and sweet although an option was brandy).

After dinner I enjoyed a perfectly brewed coffee… sadly no room for dessert.

Our server, Kathleen, was so very welcoming and attentive.

First time dinners. I am always happy to try a steak. CHAR did not disappoint. We live an hour north of Wausau and can't find a good steak. The steak was tender. I wasn't 100% fan of the Chimmurruci sauce but didn't know that and I wanted to try something new. The veggies were great and potatoes were perfect. My husband really enjoyed his burger but thought there was to many fries and reminded him of McDonald's french fries but crispier. I thought they were good. We will return and try something else on the menu, maybe some ribs? Who knows. The waiter was nice, but he was so soft spoken, he was hard to hear. Came here for a solo dinner while traveling for work. Everything was awesome from the service to the drinks to the food. I started with one of the best spicy margaritas I’ve had, followed by the French onion soup which was rich and delicious, and full of onions. I then had a fresh wedge salad but I like a normal wedge salad, it was two baby lettuce heads cut in half which was so unique, I loved it. Generous amounts of blue cheese crumbles and bacon made it extra good. For the main course I ordered a medium rare filet mignon which was cooked to absolute perfection. The mashed potatoes and vegetable medley (many different veggies which I loved) paired great with my perfectly seasoned steak. I’m definitely coming back for more!

This place is way over priced for the food offered, and the food itself was... not great. I ordered the walleye fillet and my girlfriend ordered the half-rack of ribs. We had bruschetta for the appetizer.

So first of all, I've had bruschetta at many places, and i know the amount of food and plating can vary widely. But this was probably the most basic and uninspired version of the dish I've seen. The amount of food was small for the price, and they were very sparse with the ingredients. I like that they offered the dish, but they need to go the extra mile to make it memorable, not just put the bare minimum on the plate.

The walleye dish given to me was terrible. Strawberries and pineapple should NOT go on a fish fillet. The walleye was pan fried and crispy, but it was not seasoned AT ALL. The white rice had more flavor than the fish. I was eating it, and the texture was there, but it was not enjoyable. However, because the fish was covered in fruit, I couldn't just put salt and pepper on it. Eventually I did and it tasted better. But salty warm fruit mixed in with fish is not a good combination. The roasted vegetables were good though.

The ribs we ordered tasted like they were microwaved from a big box supplier, not anything that would have come from in-house. They were on par with what you might end up with at Denny's or Applebee's as a filler item on the menu. No offense to either of those places, but for a place with "grill house" in the name, and for being charged the higher price, we were expecting the ribs to be more of something from a grill and charred.

Overall for two disappointing dinners and the appetizer we spent nearly $100. Our whole reason for choosing Char Grillhouse was to experience higher-end food and dining experience. I used to love coming here when it was the City Grill, but things have really changed.

This place was awesome! Umami burger was best thing I have ever had. Waiter was so helpful and friendly. Informed us if we were going to 7:30 show at the Grand we should get our order in right away. It was quick and so delicious. We've been by it a dozen times and it looked too fancy for casual dress but we fit right in. Decor is beautiful.

Huge disappointment. We rarely get date nights these days and had dinner here, followed by a show at the Grand Theater planned for several months. We had a reservation and arrived 2 hours before the show assuming that would be plenty of time. Wrong. There were many others that left worse off than us, and I feel bad for them.

We did not order any drinks, fortunately, as the table of 4 next to us had to wait over 45 minutes just to get their drinks! They were there before us and never got their entrees before they had to leave for the show.

For our meals, we each ordered a soup, she had the steak salad, and I ordered the Ribeye. We never received the soups, so I can't comment on those. Our server kept coming to our table every 15 minutes telling us how they hired a new girl for the salad/soup station and she wasn't doing well. When we finally got our entrees a full hour and 10 minutes after we ordered, we immediately found both steaks to be well done almost to the point of burnt. The server did take mine back and said he was going to remake it himself. The second time it came out perfect medium rare and was very good. She was very hungry and didn't want to wait, so she ate hers as was, but did not enjoy it.

We were planning on getting a dessert to shared but by the time we finished eating, we had just enough time to walk the 3 minutes to the venue, go to the bathroom, and sit down before the show started.

Our server and the others were working very hard and were very apologetic to us and most others seated. Many customers had a similar experience as us this night and I really felt bad for the staff. I have to assume there is a management issue here.

I so wanted this to be a more positive experience because most restaurants aren't open Sunday evenings. To start with the positive, the goat cheese bruschetta was very delicious. There were two of us and it took over an hour to get our entrees and from start to finish, we were there for almost two hours. The scallops on my entree were fishy and despite asking for a temperature on my husband's steak salad, it came well done vs. medium rare. The service wasn't great but the server just kept blaming the kitchen even though he seemed really new as well. I so wanted this to be better for another solid restaurant option but sadly, it wasn't and the tables around us experienced the same. Many sent back their food or had it boxed up because they didn't have time to eat it before the show at The Grand.

We had an amazing dinner! The smoked bourbon old fashioned was great! We ordered the beer cheese chips which were delicious. We had the chef’s soup of the day which was tomato bisque- so good and then the filet mignon which was done to perfection. Kate’s service was knowledgeable so friendly. We haven’t enjoyed a dinner this much in quite awhile.

I was excited to try this place out for the first time despite the prices on the menu. It was girls' night out at the Grand Theater and we agreed to dine close by before heading over. Disappointed is an understatement.

There were barely any guests, so we did get our food quickly. Although our server was a nice, young kid, he had the memory of a goldfish. He came to our table twice to as us: how are the first few bites? As he approached to fill my friend's water glass, I took my last few sips to have him fill mine too. He cluelessly just walked away. He didn't know what types of vodka were available or what types of juice. I've made better drinks at home. I will admit, my girlfriends were pleased with their meals (one had the NY Strip and the other Ale-Braised Beef Short Rib). And the presentation of all dishes was exceptional. But my Scallop Wild Mushroom Risotto was gross. The risotto tasted old and the mushrooms were slimy (reminded me of the texture of boiled okra). Compared to the same dish at Ciao, this dish left much to be desired.

Lastly, for such a classy place, I'd expect the host to acknowledge not only the guests coming in, but those leaving as well. This lad was perched on a stool behind the stand surfing his phone. He didn't even look up as the group in front of us, or my girlfriends and I exited the front door.

As a server for many years myself, I tend to be critical of service... especially when the price of an entree is reaching $50. It was frustrating to tip 15% for what I consider bad service on a $200 bill. Other reviews cited long wait times for food and bad service. Perhaps this is the reason there were only 4 tables occupied and one patron at the bar on a Friday night.

One waitress for 10 tables, the food had great presentation but had no flavor. Listened to 3 screaming birthday girls for an hour and half just to eat a dry $55 piece of meat. Sad to say I skipped a cheap meal for this much overpaid disappointment. Didn’t realize handspun potatoes were code for instant mixed potatoes. But by the look of the cook in sweats and crocs it made sense. Drinks were decent at best. Won’t be back.

The Lobster Rissoto was delicious and very reasonably priced considering the amount of lobster chunks in it. I also ordered an old fashioned which was quite decent. The ambience of the restaurant itself was rather upscale, perhaps exceeding expectations for a smaller city like Wausau.
However, it achieved a remarkable balance – elegant yet refreshingly nonchalant, a welcome departure from the often-pretentious atmosphere found in similar establishments within larger metropolitan areas.

We made 5:30 dinner reservations before our 7pm performance at the Grand Theatre. The place was not very busy with the exception of a larger group in another area. It took 10 minutes before our server even came to our table after going and greeting and taking another order from patrons that had come in after us. We ordered our drinks and our food right away as we had a performance to make. The patrons that ordered before us walked out and another couple walked out. It took over 25 minutes to get our drinks and our waters. Seriously? We can’t even get waters while we wait? The service was horrendous and our waitress was no where to be seen. Our food took another 20 minutes to arrive and we had to shovel our food before making our way to the Grand. Not exactly the sort of dinner experience we were hoping for. The saving grace, the food is good. The salmon, Oscar was excellent, and my husband enjoyed his lamb. My recommendation? Would not recommend before a show or if you have a timeline.

I ordered the Cod. My one small piece of cod was real good but It didn’t come with anything. No side salad no potato no nothing. The server was so,so she never explained anything. She didn’t have much of a personality. Everything is very expensive. You don’t get much for your buck. I remember when there was the City grill. The city grill was great. Char is just ok.

The dining experience at this CHAR was exceptional! The maple glazed jalapeno shrimp was a standout, delivering amazing flavors. Kathy, our server, truly went above and beyond, and her friendly personality added a delightful touch to our meal. Highly recommend this place!

Great renovation and addition back into the Wausau market! Stop by for a quick glass of wine and appetizer, and was so impressed, we stayed for dinner.

Bacon wrapped shrimp as an appetizer with wild salmon oscar for an entrée, both were phenomenal!

Only real suggestion for management,is the wine list is a little pricey, considering what’s on it for Wausau Wisconsin.

We arrived, the restaurant was pretty empty but for a few patrons. We were seated and ordered drinks, the drinks took sometime to arrive at the table (20+ minutes). We also had kids along. The did not get the wine correct and we had to re-order it. We could see the wine at the bar but our server was AWOL. After 45 minutes waiting (wine still sitting at the bar), we never were able to order our food and finally got up and left. I am not sure how this place is getting good reviews. Our waiter was AWOL for the majority of the time. Drinks took way too long to get delivered to our table, I suspect it was due to the waiter again. Prices of the drinks are ridiculous. It's a nice bar/restaurant but really doesn't matter if you have such horrible service, especially for a "higher" end restaurant. If this place survives a year I will be surprised.

What a great new place for Wausau! I can’t tell you enough how beautiful this place is. The decor is a modern look with a comforting vibe. The service was awesome. I wish I could remember her name but she was knowledgeable, and sweet! But, for the best part, the food was phenomenal! Definitely need to try this place. Located right downtown in Wausau! Hoping they add some great sites n shopping to compliment this great find!
