Enjoyed dinner here several times over our stay. We sat at the bar each time and the service was excellent. We had the NY strip dinner which was really good. Also, stopped on a Sunday for BBQ fare which was fantastic. Everything was delicious. Best to make reservations to guarantee seating.

Enjoyed a nice meal before a show in Three Lakes. Kara, our server, was excellent. In fact, she is so good that she drove to the event venue to bring me the credit card I left in the check folder. At the time, I didn't know I left the card at the restaurant.
THANK YOU KARA!

This place had the BEST STEAK I've ever had at a restaurant! I was also part of a large group and the server was nothing short of spectacular when handling all of us. We would have loved to eat outside if it hadn't been raining because the patio looked so inviting!
At this point, I'm nitpicking because it was great, but the menu is very limited in my opinion. I think they change it regularly so I understand keeping it small but it was still limited to high end meats and fish. I didn't see any vegan options and 1 vegetarian entree option (if that vegetarian eats fish) so just a heads up.
I'd definitely go back!

We were asked if we had reservations. Maybe it gets busy. So, maybe that is advisable. In fact, I would say give them a call to check on their hours on the day you want to go if that’s important to you. Looks to me like they’re not totally consistent.

We sat outside on a gorgeous sunny Tuesday evening. I asked if we could raise the umbrella. The waitress said it was too windy. There was no wind. That was ridiculous. We should have simply done it without asking. I saw others did that.

The atmosphere felt like a brewery-type establishment. They are NOT a brewery. It’s just how I would describe it. It was very friendly and relaxing. Babies and dogs seem more than welcome. I like that. We were dressed extremely casually and did not feel out of place. It appears anyone (with money!!) is welcome. The place looked nearly brand-new. The waitress said she thought they opened in 2021. The waitress was extremely friendly and sweet without being annoying, intrusive or overly attentive. She was perfect.

I had two blackberry old fashions. The alcohol was barely detectable. Hubby had two Arnold Palmers (that is non-alcoholic, just lemonade and iced tea.) He said they were very different. One had lots of lemonade and next one lots of iced tea.

The flies descended on our plates the second the food arrived. That was horrible. It was like eating in a dirty barnyard. I never stopped shooing them from my plate-literally.

We both had the $59 filet and lobster with mashed potatoes. Hubby had asparagus and I substituted mine for Brussels sprouts. The Brussels sprouts were nicely charred. I had asked for the maple syrup and Parmesan version but received plain. No problem. I didn’t care that much. And they did not upcharge us for that substitution. The asparagus was perfect. We LOVED the mashed potatoes. We would have loved a bit more of that. But it was enough. The lobster was perfect and pulled to the outside of the shell so we did not have to work at getting it free. The beef filets were cooked to absolute perfection! We both ordered them cooked medium. They were juicy and so soft with no gristle or anything to leave uneaten. I needed salt and pepper on mine. Mine had no sort of seasoning. Hubby liked his just the way it came. They were very generously sized nice thick filets. They seemed larger than 8 ounces.

We both absolutely loved our meals and our experience here. We were full and satisfied and felt good when we were finished. I could only eat half of my steak. I would have liked to share a dessert because they sounded so good. But we were full enough and did not want to spoil what we just enjoyed.

The downside really is only the cost. We spent $200 (that included the bill at $164 and a tip for $35.)
So, two meals, two drinks with alcohol and two non-alcoholic drinks and NO appetizers. That is a mighty big bill for what we had even if we were super happy.

We came to celebrate my birthday on the assumption that it was fine dining. The prices are on the high end for the area regardless of food quality. The atmosphere was more of a “clubhouse” or casual restaurant. A $49 ribeye did not come with soup or salad and there is no bread with the meal. The more affordable fish fry was $25 and came with one piece of square shaped fish that was oily and watery all at once. It had a fishy taste and was mushy inside. The French fries were good but not fresh cut or anything special and again-no soup, salad or bread. The steak bites were good but some were well done and some were rare. Oddly, those were also $25 and came with fries but on the appetizer menu where one would not expect soup or salad. Finally, I ordered the cheesecake and my husband ordered the “pop tart”. The cheesecake was more of a light mousse that I guessed was Cool Whip, Jello mix, and cream cheese. Raspberries were mixed in and on top. It was huge and beautifully presented. Despite that, it was not worth $12 and I would not categorize it as cheesecake. The pop tart was a phyllo dough square with sickenly sweet filling and toppings. It was ok. The drink I ordered was a Long Island iced tea that didn’t resemble one. All in all, the entire dinner was a disappointment that was worsened by the high price. The outdoor seating area was lovely and the inside was modern with golfing decor.

Great gastropub in the north woods! Everyone loved their food, and the choice between 3 amazing old-fashions was a nice touch. They have a wide selection of choices at their bar and plenty of food to fill you up. Make sure to come early on the weekends, as it gets filled up by 6pm!

Best food in the northwoods. Varied menu with always a different option. Friendly and accommodating staff. New outdoor patio, bakery coming. Wagyu burger, scallop specials, Thai shrimp and much more. Great desserts.

Daily menus are on Facebook.

If you've not been there for Thanksgiving, you're missing out. Absolutely the finest Thanksgiving dinner! Every side was perfection. And the prices very, very reasonable.

Wonderful pesto prawn gnocchi. Maple Brussels sprouts, sweet potato croquette, squash cakes all delicious. OMG The chocolate pecan coconut cake is one of the best desserts I've ever had. Menu does change frequently.

Third and fourth visits. Just excellent food. The Asian shrimp and scallops is both spicy and sweet. My wife's halibut was cooked so perfectly it was the best I've ever eaten. It just melted. The triple berry crumble was huge. Two of us could not finish it.
I've had the steaks, walleye, burgers, desserts and everything is excellent. This is just a wonderful place with great staff, great food and great atmosphere. I would give it six stars if I could.

Our waiter was a superb young man, we left him a nice tip. The burger we had was with the salmon spread, but I can’t remember the name. A very unique combination that didn’t go well together. Seemingly overpriced, as we easily spent $95 (not including tip) on two meals, an appetizer, and two drinks. Would not be on my must stop list if visiting Three Lakes. The Tavern on the Loop still has my favorite burgers for a reasonable price. So I highly recommend the Tavern if looking for a great burger, cold drink and friendly atmosphere.

Restaurant: very nice, staff: very friendly and attentive. Our first time there, so we previewed the menu online first. We were disappointed that many items from the online menu were not on the actual restaurant menu. A bit pricey by Northwoods standards. Our burger and salmon were tasty, but sides were a la carte. Would like to see vegetables on the menu.

Highly overpriced for food and atmosphere. Walleye came to our table "black". Cod was passable but cooked in questionable oil. I would think for the prices they get you would get a glass of water instead of plastic and Linen table clothes also. There was a terrible echo i n the bar area. There will have to be some huge changes before we go back.

This was hands down the worst burger I’ve ever had. IT WAS INEDIBLE. I gave it three chances, adding salt and pepper to each bite, but gave up on the third try.

It tasted like a frozen patty was thrown on a grill top that hadn’t been cleaned in 6 months.

We shared that we had a bad experience and the burger was subpar, and when we were handed the bill, the $24.00 burger wasn’t even discounted.

When asked about it, and if they felt it was right to not take it off the bill, they said there was, “nothing they could do”.

I asked to speak with a manager, at which point she said, “I am the manager and I can’t take it off.”

We spent $30 on 1 inedible burger and a Diet Coke.

Jaysen was cordial and understanding, but I’m frustrated that the bar manager handled this the way she did. I don’t write reviews often but this experience was so incredibly bad, it was laughable.

The absolute worst burger I have ever had. It tasted like a frozen patty was fried on a grill plate that hasn’t been cleaned since 1999. Absolute disgrace. We kindly informed staff how awful it was and were in turn charged for the full meal and received only a joke of an apology. Couldn’t recommend this dump less. One star is more stars than this place deserves.

A real gem in the north woods. The atmosphere is really nice. It’s open and airy. Lots of wood. Everyone is super friendly. I was told the staff is mostly family and the owner is cooking. (Also told a new chef is on the way.)
The bartenders were helpful and attentive. There are some special cocktails that are worth a try. You can eat at the bar if you like but the dining room is nice too. It’s a little small but not at all cramped. Big widows show off the really nice patio. Where you can also eat.
The food was great too. You may balk a little at the prices but the portions are healthy, the quality is awesome, and hey inflation. The menu changes daily. I had the last end cut of the prime rib. Perfectly cooked with delicious au jus. The wife had a shrimp and scallop pasta that was fantastic. Very nice side salad too. Not just lettuce on the plate. Desserts change too but we had an awesome cheesecake and took home a giant piece of carrot cake.
The service was great too. Evan was very helpful and friendly.
My only suggestion to the owners: It would be awesome if you made your own salad dressings. And cooking the onions and mushrooms side just a bit longer.
Claytons1881 is a great restaurant and I hope they stick around. The north woods needs you! I’ll be back.

(FINAL THOUGHT BELOW)

We went here on a Monday evening, made a reservation for 6 people. We sat at the bar, ordered a few beers and creative cocktails. Had a Leinie Honey Weiss, Summer Weiss, Blackberry Old Fashioned, The 1881, and Big Stone Sour! I took a sip of each drink and all was pretty good! I definitely favored the Blackberry Old Fashioned and Big Stone Sour.

We tried a few dishes. These are huge dishes. Meatloaf sandwich. Tangy, Mouthwatering, and Uniquely Delicious. Taste great made fresh, but definitely not good when microwaved the next day. Bread got super tough to bite when reheated, should have airfryed to reheat. Greek Grinder was absolutely delicious. The tzatziki sauce made here is the signature ingredient for this dish. The Clayton’s Cheeseburger. Simple, aromatic, and love the lightly smoky char on the burger patty.

We did get the Lemon Cheesecake Ice Cream Sandwich and the Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwich. Both are good! Definitely great for kids! For me, not something I would normally go for.

The bartender was great and friendly. Pretty attentive! Love her personality and bubbly-ness. Our waiter was a young man. Friendly and sweet. Wish he was a bit more attentive, but we also know the restaurant got super busy soon after we arrived. Met the owner and he was super welcoming!

Overall, will definitely visit again for the cocktails and meatloaf sandwich. I would love to try their “Soprano Sandwich” next time or the Aged Steak. It’s pretty pricey here but it comes in big quantity and quality food. Definitely give it a visit. Call first to see if you need a reservation.

Incredible. A place in northern Wisconsin that has a great atmosphere and incredible food. If you are looking for a frozen pizza and nachos do not go to this restaurant. A real gem of the north woods.

You drive to the north woods of Wisconsin to intentionally avoid the trappings of big city life. But when it comes time to dine out, it's impossible to leave your metropolitan expectations behind. You find yourself wanting both the north woods experience AND a good glass of wine and a well constructed sandwich.

This is where I think Clayton's nails it. It's a wine bar, with a great choice of beers, well crafted sandwiches, a slice of Prime Rib or an eclectic choice of appetizers. So you can walk in, temporarily park the north woods outside with your car, reenter the fine dining world and when finished, go back to the outdoor life.

Not two worlds easily bridged, but I think Clayton's exists in both quite well.

This place looks great….has a great feel. Prices are on the very high end for what you get. For a steak at those prices, it should come with much more attached with it…..plus they were not very good. Very stringy. If you want a steak…go elsewhere.

Always a real treat for us to dine at Clayton’s. We travel up to the area several times a year from Minneapolis, MN and this is a must stop every trip. We have dined all over the US and food, drinks, and service at Clayton’s never disappoints. We enjoyed the growth of the business over time and look forward to using their new patio area. We had a wonderful dinner with friends on Saturday, Sept 24 and our Host made the evening enjoyable. My dinner of scallops and shrimp was made perfectly with a generous portion. One thing to note, their desserts are all homemade, very tasty, and huge! We split the Pineapple Upside Down Cake and Peach Cobbler for five people. I love restaurants that think outside the box on the standard desserts.

Where to start?! This family-owned and operated establishment is an absolute godsend. If you love excellent food, amazing service and a warm yet contemporary atmosphere, sprint to Clayton’s now! We’ve been vacationing in Three Lakes for 23 years and this is BY FAR the best dining experience we’ve ever had. We ordered virtually the entire menu for our party of 7 (including three generations of family) and every single one of us had a favorite item. There was not one miss! The beer selection is a solid list of local brews and the cocktails are top notch. Prices are reasonable and the portions in are generous. Thank you, thank you, thank you Clayton’s for coming to Three Lakes! You now sit at the top of our roster of North Woods restaurants!

It's a shame this place is misleading in their name. They call themselves a gastropub but really they are a typical Northwoods bar.

$15 chicken quesadilla was nothing to write home about except the crazy huge portions. Enough to split between two people or to get two meals. Sparsely peppered with chicken, super basic.

$15 chicken peanut lettuce wraps again with the crazy huge portions tasted like they were sauced with something out of a bottle.

I have no issues paying $15+ for amazing good food that I'd expect to find at a gastro pub. This fell short.

$38 for two people, two mediocre entrees and two sodas.

The waitress didn't check on us after dropping our meals off, was lackluster on making a recommendation and didn't offer to refill our sodas until we were ready to leave.

Arrived @ 5:45pm on a Friday night. Special seafood entrees for Friday. The walleye almondine & side of brusell sprouts with ailoi sauce were outstanding!
This is certainly a hidden gem! We highly recommend & will definitely come back to when in the area. Suggest checking Facebook for hours & menu. Today food was served from 4-7pm & closed at 8pm.

Clayton's (named after Owners brother) and 1881 (the year Three Lakes was founded) offers a non-traditional Wisconsin restaurant. It's slightly upclass but still provides a very casual atmosphere. The staff is super friendly.

We had strawberry blueberry salads with grilled chicken. Absolutely delishious! Everything is new. Bathrooms are clean. They have a few tables outside during the summer if you care to eat outside.

Owners are the best! Space is bright, large and lots of natural light. The friendliest of service, and good simple food. Don't miss doughnuts in the morning tho

We stopped in for a few drinks after dinner. We were very surprised, the drinks were very unique and they all tasted great. We tried 4 different drinks and each one was fun & delicious. We did not eat, but after seeing the menu and the food that came out, we will definetly come here for food next time.
I also have to say that our sever & the owners were friendly and very informative.

First time to stop in at this new location in Three Lakes. Owners were present and very welcoming with their story. Steak bites with caraway sauce were excellent and well seasoned.

Stopped in at 1:30 on a Sunday for a light in-between meal. Had the Colossal Shrimp and Steak bites. Fantastic.

Atmosphere and menu are further cultivating a Culinary Renaissance in the Northwoods. Must try.

What an awesome place to stop! The owners were SO friendly and talkative. They had a great selection of beer on tap, wine, and bourbons and whiskeys with whiskey ice balls. They also had slot machines and plug ins for your phone. It’s definitely a great stop if you’re heading farther up north or even snowmobiling in the winter!
