We did take out, in the hopes of finding a new Chinese spot but was highly let down. The food was super bland, the rice was overcooked, & overall not a good place to eat at.

This restaurant is absolutely amazing!!! Walking through the doors is like a step back in time, where the food was authentic and homemade, service is outstanding and personal and the decor is like a beautiful Chinese museum. Try the eggrolls, try the fried rice, try the sweet and sour pork, try it all, you won’t be disappointed.

The Cozy Inn is not handicap accessible but is an okay restaurant, nothing really special. It's located on the second floor with about 25 stairs to climb. I had Kung Pao beef that had little to no spicy heat at all. My wife rated her shrimp dish as only okay. Will not be going back.

The food was missing a little flavor and I was not a fan of the fried rice. Maybe that’s how it is originally supposed to taste? The Egg-rolls are great if you like a lot of peanut sauce.

A little dark but very cozy. The hostess and wait staff were very friendly, food was pretty good with a generous serving. The couple stars of the show were the Crab Rangoon and the Egg Rolls. Would definitely recommend to a friend visiting the Janesville area.

Pulled up to Cozy Inn in JVL w/ my daughter & yo this place is straight ✨HISTORY✨ 💯 been holdin it down for a whole century 🗓️ like legit 100 yrs of vibes 🤯. Soon as u step in it’s got that OG Chinese restaurant decor 🍜🖼️, neon nostalgia vibes 📞🤳 (yes there’s a phone booth for the selfie sesh 📸🔥) and a whole memory book 📖 where ppl wrote down their feels from decades back 🥹💌.

Service? Straight immaculate 🧼💎 staff was hella friendly, treated us like fam 👨‍👩‍👧💞. Atmosphere = cozy core + throwback aesthetic 🎎🕯️. Food? bruh don’t even get me started 🤤🍚🍤 every single bite was bussin bussin 🚀🚀 had me & my kid lookin at each other like “yo this slaps harder than it should” 🥡💯.

They ain’t win Janesville Gazette’s “Best Asian Restaurant” like a bazillion times for no reason 🏆📰 it’s OBVIOUS once u sit down & grub 🙌🏽🔥. Honestly, it’s the kinda spot that makes you think, “dang, if I had brought my ex here sooner maybe she wouldn’t be my ex” 😂💔 (my bad, Cozy Inn, that one’s on me).

Everything about this spot is a W ✅✅✅. If u in JVL & u don’t hit Cozy Inn, ur actually selling urself short frfr 😤🤌.

I am very disappointed of this place. The food was not well cooked. Meal preparation time is ridiculous. Not sure if there is no A/C but it was warm. The cost of food is very expensive considering the portions and taste. One very positive thing is the waitress was very very nice

Food was horrible compared to most Chinese Restaurants. She came back and asked how is the food. When we told her it was not hot, and food was not as ordered and tasted bad. Rice was to be fried rice , came soaked in soy sauce. The EGG ROLLS where real nasty tasting.
She didn't want to make it right. Coming across with very negative attitude. Found out she was part owner. Then over charged us . Would not make it right. Never gave us a receipt or our change back. I highly recommend to eat elsewhere.

Food was awful compared to other chinese restaurants. The egg roll was extremely bad was not hot and tasted like corn starch. Water was warm. Hot and Sour soup not hot and tasted like Canola Oil and ran through a blender. Fried rice was doused with soy sauce, not fried. They charged me triple on tax. Did not give me a receipt. When owner waitress asked how it was and we told her. She really got offended and nasty. Over priced and skimpy proportion.

The atmosphere is a little dank, I know it's an old building but it could definitely use a renovation. As for the food, the entrees were fine, could use more flavor other than salt, but otherwise they were the best part of the meal. Egg drop soup was pretty good too. The rice that came with the entrees was dry and kind of crusty on top. Also, don't get fried foods, both the egg rolls and rangoons were not good in terms of the frying and also the flavor of the filling. Overall, I'd be okay with eating here again if somebody asked me to, but probably wouldn't choose to come again on my own.

The "Chef's Specialties" are great if you're stumped on what to get. Wonton soup is truly amazing. ~

The service is usually on point, depending of who is working. We're usually welcomed as they remember us when we return. Makes you feel good...

If you can do the 28 stair ascent on the other side of the iconic Red Door.

No joke, this is probably the best Chinese food I've had in the entire country, and as someone who grew up on military bases I've lived all over the country. The egg rolls are absolutely amazing with just a hint of peanut butter. I normally don't like egg rolls but I could easily down multiple of these.

I’m not one to write reviews in general but this food was awful. We ordered orange chicken, sesame chicken and chicken lo mein. It was flavorless, the chicken was hard and not sauced well. Desperately needed soy sauce or something everything tasted bland.

You would have to pay me to come back and eat here again. Girlfriend said the egg rolls were bad too I’ll take her word for it, didn’t bother eating mine.

Not your same old same old chinese restaurant.

I had no idea what to expect but was pleasantly surprised on slightly different take than the normal chinese dishes. I got the pork lo mein, the sweet and sour chicken and egg rolls.

The egg rolls were large, super fresh, and oddly had peanut butter in them. Not too overpowered but definitely there. It was a bit odd but I liked it.

The pork lo mein had the same flavors as chow mein (like taking chow mein and putting soft noodles with it). No red pork but lots of good flavored pork.

The sweet and sour chicken was definitely a different take than I'm used to. The chicken had much less breading than the usual and instead of the typical red sweat and sour sauce it had a home made sauce that the chicken was served in. If I'm honest I prefer the crispy chicken of most other places but absolutely loved cozy inn's sauce.

Service was impeccable. Incredibly friendly and fast.

We ordered take out. I got the sesame chicken amd my wife got kung poa chicken. We have eaten there for years but haven't in quite a while. I was very disappointed. My sesame chicken was very bland and really didn't taste like what sesame chicken is supposed to. Almost had a hint of like dirty dish soap and the chicken breading was mooshy like dough on some of them. The wife's meal was also very bland. I will say we will be getting our meals elsewhere. Very disappointed.

Located upstairs, be prepared for the steep steps and entryway if you have trouble with stairs. The space is very cozy as the name states, it’s a cute little traditional Chinese restaurant which I loved! Our service was great and they are very friendly; however the food was just okay and inconsistent for the price. The portions felt small and I wasn’t a huge fan of the egg roll, it tasted off but the crab rangoon and wonton soup were really good!

I got the general chicken and crab Rangoon. The chicken was disappointing. Over half of my breaded chicken pieces were just breading with no chicken on the inside. I only ordered fried rice and egg roll. It was my first time there and I had to try it first. Finally, a Chinese restaurant that offers soy sauce colored rice and not orange color. The egg roll was great. I will definitely come back again for other dishes when I'm in town. I saw an album that they have been in business for 100 years. Overall, good service in a dark and red atmosphere reminiscent of old Chinese restaurants (which I guess this is). Everything feels old-ish, even the food.

Potions aren't necessarily huge - not enough to take home - we ended up eating everything there (2 couples, 4 dishes + soup and eggrolls)

Dishes are generally tasty, but not so good that I'm dying to go back. In fact, I'm probably not going back even if I'm in town. It wasn't a bad meal. But it did feel like all the dishes tastes like one another, and had interesting twists. I mean, how is that possible with Mongolian Beef, Orange Chicken, Pork Lomein, and Hunan Shrimp essentially taste the same? Orange chicken came with huge pieces of broccoli. Mongolian beef was swimming in sauce and mushrooms instead of green onions. Pork noodles had a lot more veggies than either pork or noodles.

And yet, everything was tasty, while different. So yea... 🤷‍♀️

Please make sure to look at your bill especially when paying by card.
Firstly they charged us way more then what the menu said per plate.
The second thing they did was after we left actual dollar bills as a tip, they then proceeded to give themseleves a 10 dollar extra tip from my card. I didnt realize this until after the transaction completely went through my card. So just be careful because they steal.

The food itself didnt have much flavor, nothing was reallly good.

Had a bizarre first experience here. Once i walked in, the waitress asked how many. She then had us stand and wait for a few minutes(in a near empty restaurant) until she ran back over and asked "oh did you want a table?" We were then seated next to a large party which isnt too big a deal just odd with the amount of open seating. The whole time we were served upon our waitress was almost sprinting across the restaurant and spoke very quickly as though it was a packed restaurant and we were one of many tables she had to wait upon. When i had a few questions about the menu she was confused as to what i was asking and was rushing me. She also had no idea what chow mein noodles are. Ive felt less anxiety ordering from a packed restaurant with a line out the door.

We came here for a family dinner.

This is true and authentic Chinese American food. It's not really for the Panda Express crowd.

I ordered wonton soup and it came with chowmein to sprinkle on top.

I ordered the House Fried Rice and it was such a huge portion that I had it for breakfast the next day. I could only eat about a third of it. It was extremely good and flavorful.

My wife ordered chicken and broccoli with white rice and my daughter ordered the cheeseburger and fries. She loved the cheeseburger and kept telling us to try the fries!

My wife wasn't a huge fan of the chicken and broccoli but we will try something else next time. She helped my daughter finish the burger and French fries.

We ordered lemonade and sodas for drinks and it was almost 60 dollars out the door before the tip.

The atmosphere was quiet with music playing in the background and the lights were dimmed. It was relaxing and fulfilling and I would recommend this restaurant.

It reminds me of authentic China Town in San Francisco.

This amazing place was recommended to me by a friend who is also fond of well appointed, retro establishments. Cozy Inn Chinese Restaurant was a charming call-back to Jet Set days where people dressed up to dine out and carried on interesting conversations with each other. The place was sparkling and immaculately maintained. The food was outstanding as well, each of my four dinner companions having a variety of Chinese-American dishes that were delicious and filling. I drove here from Racine and was so very happy with the experience. Do yourself a favor: fancy yourself up and enjoy this charming, best of yesteryear restaurant in Janesville, Wisconsin.

She kept checking with us, and made sure we we're enjoying our meal. She even packed up our leftovers for us to bring home. The atmosphere was unique. I felt like I was in an apartment made into a restaurant. Not complaining about that, though. It was a cool experience.

It's the food my wife and I did not like. The Lo Mein was too nutty. It didn't taste right. And there wasn't enough sauce. Also, the Mongolian Beef was like beef and veggies over rice and drowned in gravy. The sauce was definitely not hoisin. It was bland.

On the flip side, the egg rolls and the egg drop soup we had were delicious. Judging by other reviews, the egg roll seems hit or miss.

Oof what happened? I've been eating here my entire life and have seen a gradual decline in quality over the years, but recently that decline has been a nosedive.

There's nothing in the fried rice anymore? Just rice and nothing else, not even scallions. The egg rolls are absolutely loaded with peanut butter to the point of having no other flavor... they used to have just a touch of peanut butter. And the entrées are pathetic quality compared to what they used to be.

Maybe this place should just close down since they're getting worse and worse every year.

Visited after not being there for a decade. The ambience was the same. Old School Chinese, with cool wrap around booths. The food was a disappointment. The egg roll crust was like cardboard. Very thick. The fried shrimp appetizer was unbelievably bad, with a tiny piece of shrimp covered in a thick layer of coating with a rancid piece of bacon inserted. We told the waitress, and she offered to get us another plate without the bacon. We said "NO THANKS". The Orange Chicken was the worst I ever had and seemed not cooked all the way through. Definitely not the same as I remembered. We had to pay for the horrible shrimp we didn't eat. Bill was about $30. . . and we had nothing to drink. We will never go back.

Went on Christmas eve! It was fantastic. Literally the best Chinese food I've ever had. Egg roll, egg drop soup, and the two entrees (I couldn't decide) were fantastic. I will be back! I will seek out the oldest Chinese restaurant in America and see if they are as good!

Not the best food. Have had better at Happy Wok. Atmosphere is unique. Wife commented the place smelled of cat urine, I did not notice. Women’s restroom was out of order. I’ll not be back

This is one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in the state. I believe it is the oldest continuously operating Chinese American restaurant in the state.

This is one of those places that you will want to share with your friends well also keeping it a secret. The dining room is a throwback to an earlier time. The proprietors perform all the duties of the restaurant with great speed. The service is top-notch. They were very accommodating of our somewhat complicated order.

The egg drop soup is some of the best we’ve had the eggrolls have a light naughtiness from the peanut sauce inside the eggroll. The hot mustard is memorable and pungent.

The entrées are well portioned and steaming hot out of the kitchen. Our dishes were sauced. My one critique is that I normally prefer some other flavor components and brightness to my dishes. the sauces could use a little sweetness and some brightness from ginger or more acid from Chinese vinegar. Most of the flavor seemed to come from oyster sauce, which is obviously a core flavor in Chinese American cuisine.

The food was horrible and when I complained about it the waitress was not friendly. I asked for something different and she tried to charge me for that and the order that was uneatable. When I asked for check she had charged me 3 dollars over the price of my dish. I confronted her and she quoted the price on ticket. I said the menu said 12.99. when I asked to see menu she snatched the ticket and came back with correct price and said I quote, " sorry didn't have my glasses on". I paid ticket but didn't leave a tip and as I was walking off she said " what service you not like. I walked out. I been in Janesville 40 yrs and have eaten there many times. This was upsetting.

Amazing place - it's just over 100 years old! It might be nostalgic for me since I grew up in Janesville, but it is my favorite restaurant of all time. The atmosphere when you walk takes you to another time and place. It's hard to go out with small children, but the staff was so patient and respectful with us. Thank you!

This place has been on my list for a while, being the oldest Chinese restaurant in Wisconsin and 2nd oldest in the country built it's appeal. Had a very nice meal and great conversations with friends in this small restaurant over Janesville. Well worth the drive down from Madison.

Didn't know that this Chinese restaurant is the 2nd oldest of it's kind in America and oldest in Wisconsin! With that fun fact in my back pocket, I tried a very tasty egg roll and General Tso Chicken! Great service from a very polite staff!

Just do it if you’re considering it! Very old restaurant, BUT, the food is authentic and fantastic. Large portion sizes - anticipate leftovers. The servers are very quick and attentive. We will definitely be coming back. Would recommend the Beef Kew!!!

By far best Chinese food in the Janesville area. I no longer live in Janesville, but grew up there. Every time I come back I make it a point to order from Cozy Inn.

The owners and staff have been so incredibly kind to me and my family since I was a young child, and they still remember me (and my parents) all these years later.

Their egg rolls, egg drop soup, and fried rice are all excellent. I always get pepper steak which is perfection. My dad loves the sweet and sour chicken, and my mom loves the beef sub gum Cantonese Chow Mein.

This place truly is a gem and I strongly encourage others to check it out.

I’ve lived in Janesville for 2 years and finally ordered Friday night take-out from here. Wow! Even though they forgot our Crab Rangoon we got 2 extra egg rolls to make up for it. The egg rolls had a tad too much peanut butter for my liking but overall everything was very good. Kind of neat seeing all the old articles posted at the register and reading the history of the restaurant. I did get stuck at the top of the stairs waiting for other patrons to come up - kind of a tight squeeze for passing on the way up/down.

Our family absolutely loves Cozy Inn! My kids even comment on how the stairs make it special. The food is wonderful, but the people are what really make it a place we will always come back to. They work so hard and run their tails off and never stop smiling when they do it. Be mindful that this restaurant and their recipes are over one hundred years old so don't expect Panda Garden Chinese food. It is different. It is authentic. It is worth it!
