We traveled over an hour to celebrate my Dad's 70th birthday. The atmosphere was cozy, the old fashioneds were phenomenal, and the salads were fresh. I ordered the pine nut encrusted, pan fried walleye with mashed potatoes. The fish was heavily coated and deep fried and the mashed potatoes came out as mashed sweet potatoes. While others in our party were satisfied with the shrimp stuffed salmon and lobster risotto, I was not impressed with the walleye at all.

Finally got to the Dirty Oar for supper and had a great meal. Reservations are a good idea as they are open limited hours and seating limited tables - staffing seems to be a challenge in this area. On the shores of Lake Petenwell, the views are lovely and this restaurant has the white tablecloth supper club vibe where you can show up in jeans or dress up a little if you are celebrating. Entrees come with choice of soup or salad, a potato choice (twice baked was heavenly) and a a couple of pieces of steamed broccoli. We had a well executed meal from appetizer to dessert, and if I were to get nit-picky one of our steaks was more of a late medium than medium rare, but was still delicious and tender. Appetizers were delicious, steaks were flavorful, lobster sweet, desserts (the two choices available were salted caramel cheesecake on a pretzel crust and apple streudel) were a tasty finish. Overall, the meal was spot on and portion size generous. It's a little pricier dining option, but worth it! Dirty Oar will be one of our go-tos for dining out in the area!

The loaded ribeye with Bleu chese and the works was awesome. Weve had it before and all of us had it and was mouth watering. Cooked to perfection and tasted great. We've been going there for 15 years and never had a bad meal. We have had a problem with one waitress but recently haven't had her. Colleen is great to remedy any problems right away.

A great supper club located in Nekoosa on the East side of Lake Petenwell. We were greeted by the owner of the restaurant, and she was very cordial and engaging. A true host! The vibe of the club is what is desired. The decor, music, and view of the lake all combined to create the perfect venue. We enjoyed cocktails at the bar with fun conversation. The meal was nothing short of amazing. Our appetizer was the tempura cauliflower coated in a chili sauce and topped with Bleu cheese... spectacular! I had the prime rib which was also terrific! It was served with sauteed mushrooms and onions, green beans, and I chose the garlic mashed potatoes. The prime rib was absolutely delectable! It was medium rare and perfect. My wife ordered the lobster with risotto which was also a fantastic choice! The lobster tails were prepared spot on, and the risotto was truly delicious. The ambiance of the place combined with the background music, over the top food, and tasty cocktails made The Dirty Oar a wonderful experience we won't forget. We really appreciated the attention given to our experience by both the owner and the chef! Hats off to you both!! Thank you!

Came for dinner on a Friday with 2 friends. One had the strip steak, another had the chicken breast florentine and I had the boneless center cut pork chop. All entrees were cooked superbly. The after dinner white russian drink with salted caramel was excellent. An excellent view overlooking Petenwell Lake was phenomenal. A fine dining experience with great ambience. Will definitely be back.

The last time I said β€œbest steak I’ve ever had” was 11 years ago in Hilton Head, South Carolina, but lil’ Rome, WI just became the new champion! I had the 18oz Ribeye, and it was so good I couldn’t stop eating it!

But that was not all, this place is an absolute gem! Everything there is made from absolute scratch. My wife and I haven’t been able to find anything like that anywhere else in the area. Everything tasted great: My wife’s shrimp dish, the Buffalo cauliflower appetizer, and if the Chef is making Kuchen, you must try it!

Additionally, the owners were great! We met them after our meal. The wife runs the front of the house and pours drinks at the bar, and the husband is cooking every meal. Great people who didn’t have to take the time to have a conversation with us, but did anyways, just because we asked! The salt of the earth for sure!

Finally, the restaurant itself is gorgeous! My wife and I had had our rehearsal dinner for our wedding at the same location when it used to be called The Hideaway. I remember my wife commenting that the place looked β€œon its last legs,” but growing up in the area, she also mentioned that’s what she came to expect from what was around. That is not the case now! The owners have completely turned the property around! Clean rustic interior, beautiful decks by the waterfront, and gorgeous landscaping (which is kept up by the owner herself).

Everything here makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time. High quality atmosphere, amazing food, and great owners who care about there business and are there every day! You just don’t find places like this anymore. So, grab someone you love and take them out for something truly special!

You always feel awful leaving a poor review, but this place really ruined our Father’s Day. Rude service & we felt unwelcome with kids; got the impression this was the intended outcome. Food just ok, prices on high end. Server/chef made clear that special requests of any kind won’t be honored. Food was good but not the best to be sold at those prices, service was slow and seemed like they didn't want to be there except for the bartender who try to make our time special, other tables were given bread and water while our table was over looked. For more than $300 you'd expect more. The view is beautiful too bad the restaurant is dusty and filled with bugs and cobwebs.

We came out for a 90th birthday party with a group of 17 people. Made reservations 3 weeks in advance. We got there and I brought in the cake and was told by hostess to set on table behind what we were told was our table. I was 3/4way into dining area and I hear the bartender (which I was told was owner later on) SCREAM at me from behind the bar in front of full bar and rest of guests."THAT CAKE IS SO ILLEGAL TO BRING IN HERE". I was appalled that she screamed across full bar and dining room at me. I took cake back outside. I think there was a more professional way of handling the situation if they didn't want us to bring in the cake. Our waitress was new and not trained so we had mediocre service at best.(not her fault) Food was good overpriced for what you got. We ended up eating our cake off napkins that I took from the bar in the parking lot. We will not be back

My neighbors and I travel around the area to have dinner at different supper clubs. Last Friday, we visited The Dirty Oar. It was about an hour drive to get there, but well worth traveling the distance! The service was warm and welcoming. Our servers Juan and Sarah, handled our group of seventeen graciously and efficiently. Colleen, one of the owners gave us an interesting overview of the restaurant's history and her own personal story regarding it. We were made to feel like family!
The food was outstanding! The fish fry was excellent, the pecan crusted Walleye, the shrimp, the Salmon, and the loaded 16 oz Ribeye were thoroughly enjoyed! They were cooked to perfection and beautifully presented! They offer a mashed sweet potato that was the perfect blend of sweet and savory. The drinks, especially the Old Fashions were excellent!
We give The Dirty Oar high marks!

Called ahead before 4:30 to check if open and if Reservations were required. Hostess said they could probably work us in as it was still very early, so we arrived within 10 minutes. We were turned away by owner who said absolutely no room for us. There was only one table visible with customers seated. Very disappointed and a wasted trip. We went to The Lure that had many seated customers and were welcomed warmly. Crossing Dirty Oar off my list.

We had the fried haddock.
The coating was crispy like corn flakes(but wasn't), and the haddock(3pcs) perfectly cooked. The awesome buns were a light rye with seeds and lightly salted. The salad crisp and fresh. Husband loved the mashed red potatoes and fresh green beans. The atmosphere romantic as someone decided to play the grand piano.

First off, finding the parking lot was a challenge. Only half the gate was open and it's not clearly marked. Dinner was mediocre at best. Shrimp was overdone, making it tough to cut and rubbery to chew. Prices were high, 3 stuffed shrimp for $30+. Wasn't offered fresh cracked pepper on the salad, but the table next to us was. Wasn't offered a carafe of water, but the table next to us was. The only dessert available was a strudel type dish, and to be honest, it's something that tasted like it came out of a middle school home economics class. No cakes, no pies, no ice cream drinks. For a birthday outing, this was a high priced disappointment. Here's the Tuscan Shrimp dinner I ordered. Do yourself a favor and skip it.

The setting is beautiful, watching the sunset across Petenwell was spectacular and we were able to enjoy it from the outdoor patio (while listening to the sax player) and from the enormous windows in the dining room. *Update* Don't expect to get a reservation or even talk to someone unless you call early because they are short staffed. Their customer service isn't great either. They can't even right a professional email in response to their contact form via the website.

Below is my review from 6 years ago. No idea if it's still like this because I never made it back.

This is the first time I have been there. About 5 years ago this place was under different ownership and named something else.

The atmosphere was calm and quiet and the view of Lake Petenwell was very nice. The waitress we had seemed as though she was there to do her job at the simplest level. She was not the friendliest and seemed flustered even though there we're not many people in the restaurant when we first arrived.

The food portions were above average with the salmon and prime rib being bigger than you would normally see in some other restaurants. One of the steaks was not cooked the way it was asked to be cooked and the waitress seemed unhappy that she had to take it back. All the steaks and salmon lacked flavor, unfortunately. The potato and vegetables were flavorful and unique.

Overall, I don't think the food was worth the price and the lack of friendliness may have tied into that. It's worth another try though.

The food was good and served quickly but when we tried to order a desert drink the waitress told us the bartender was to busy to make the drink. We also weren’t asked if we wanted desert . Felt as if we were being rushed out. When we told the owner we weren’t coming back she didn’t care. We spent $160 for 2 people . The ownership acted as if you don’t like don’t come back. We won’t , to many other restaurants that appreciate business. This one apparently doesn’t.

1st time back since Covid. Not crazy busy, service was slow. A few of the specials were no longer available. Ordered apps and they were good, waited quite a while for salad and the upcharged onion soup, finally had to ask if we were going to get the soup and salad before our main course, finally got both, soup was not worth the extra $1.00, very disappointing. Waited a while for our drinks to be refreshed. Main course was excellent. A bit pricier than what I remembered. Will give it one more try, hopefully service and wait time between courses will improve. Not writing it off yet.

I was so excited to try this place. The bartenders are wonderful. Very personable, helpful and engaging. The views are beautiful from the windows. They are very Covid aware and their bar is surrounded by plexiglass and all staff were wearing masks. What we didn't care for was that is took an 75 minutes for our food. When you order an appetizer, they don't submit your order right away and 4 tables were waited on ahead of our order being submitted. When mine came out it was only warm but my husbands was hot. I don't feel like our food was any more spectacular than any other place that we have been, but the price was certainly more. They tried to make it up to us by offering to buy us a drink and gave us a dessert, but it wasn't anything that we wanted. We were told that they are short staffed because of illness and the pandemic. Would I try this place again? I had said no, but maybe, when the world goes back to normal and if I were in the area, I might give it 1 more chance, but it isn't something I am going to rush back to.

Great whiskey Old Fashioned to start the evening, great waitstaff service and EXCELLENT steaks. My wife had the surf & turf, both lobster and the tenderloin were done perfectly! We drove 1.5 hours and will definitely be back 2 more times this year!! I would rate this one of the top 5 of the best Supper Clubs in Wisconsin! When you order a $35 dollar New York Strip and ask for it to be done Medium Rare , you want it done Medium Rare. Instead it comes out Well Done, no color whatsoever, and tough. When I brought it up to the waitress she said the "Chef" said he figured it was on the "Over Side". They made no effort to make it right, reducing the bill or making a new correct steak. I ate two pieces of it and went home with a $35 piece of shoe leather for our Black Lab. Our party of 6 wasn't impressed with their meals either, no flavor, gritty raw potatoes and drinks that the bartender couldn't get right. This was our second visit here and will definitely be our last. They want to charge big prices for food that doesn't deserve it . Don't waste your time and money. Very disappointed.

Went there with 3 other people for a nice dinner. We had reservations but failed to ask for a window seat. We could still see out the windows but not the same as having a table right next to the windows that overlook the lake.

We all had the ribeye streak which has bacon & melted blue cheese on top with onions & mushrooms on the side. I can't stand blue cheese but didn't mind it at all on my streak. It's work a try if you haven't tried it before. The steaks were good except one had lots of grizzle which made it very chewey & not very good.

The meal came with a choice of potatoes, veggies, salad or soup, & rolls. The steak wasn't cheap at $38. Except for the one streak, we enjoyed the meal & view.

There was a saxophonist playing on the outside deck but we didn't get done with it meal in time to get to hear him play.

This is a place that someone could go for a leisure meal, drink listening to great music, or sipping your favorite beverage while watching the sunset over the lake.

We had 5 o clock reservation for Friday night. Got seated immediately. Had a wonderful view of the sunset over the frozen lake. Service wasn't the best. Had to ask another waitress to find ours and our waitress would walk away while a question was being asked. Had to ask about the specials since we weren't told about them. Appetizers soups salad to main entrees were excellent. This is definitely a pricey place. Paid $26 for scallops and risotto which had 3 scallops although they were beautifully cooked. Will definitely be back. Was surprised when we pulled up at the outside. It looked like a hole in the wall but inside it was a beautiful supper club atmosphere.

We get here 1/2 dozen times a year and experience is always the same. First class food, wait staff bar tender atmosphere... We have been there on Fridays during busy season and slower off season. Always excellent. Steaks are over sized (enough for 2 meals) extremely tender and flavorful. The food comes out in courses right on time. You can tell the chef has pride in every plate and the way the business is run. You won’t be disappointed!

Just had Friday Fish Fry. Had reservations. Then waited additional half-hour. Seated then waited 45 more minutes to eat. Food was great. However, one couple ordered one meal and said they would split it. When it was served it did not come with an extra plate so I gave them my salad plate which still had oil and vinegar on it. When the bill came there was a $5.00 charge for sharing a meal. Not to complain but this should have been told at time of ordering. Also if there was a charge for an extra plate it should have been explained in the beginning. Either way it was not the best experience.

I have never experienced such awful service in my life. Traveling through Wisconsin and making a stop at a beautiful supper club off the beaten path, we thought we were in for a treat. We arrive at 645pm and grab a seat at the bar for a drink. There are maybe 5 groups of people sitting along the windows and just 3 others sitting at the bar. Whoever was in charge that evening was extremely abrupt and clearly frazzled. We asked for waters and cokes and if we were allowed to eat at the bar. She said of course! Poured 1 coke and left it at the filling station then walked away. Continuing to be flustered that others were walking in and wanting to sit down to eat. None of the staff communicated with one another about a single thing. Whoever was tending bar had no idea what they were doing and we sat there, unacknowledged for an hour. Asking several times if we should instead ask for a table and if that would be better for the servers on staff. The answer we got, β€œummmm I’m not sure...” from the bartender. At that point we paid for our soda and walked out. Too bad, we were really excited to try this hidden gem as the menu looked incredible. All while the bar never filled up and there were at least 8 open tables in eye sight the entire time. Will never be going back.

Arrived a few minutes before 7 for a 7:30 reservation last Saturday, expecting to have a cocktail or two at the bar before dinner. We found seats at the bar, but when the overwhelmed bartender hadn't even acknowledged we were there let alone serve us a drink by 7:25, we went to a waitress who happened to be near and told her we no longer needed our reservation as we were leaving. Not only are they understaffed, they appear to be poorly trained, if the bartender is any example.

Pretty good for what it is - a nice restaurant in a very rural area. Service is good and the staff is friendly. We were there early and they decided to seat the only other two groups that followed right next to us, even though the entire restaurant was empty. It was very quiet and uncomfortable. Great food at the Dirty Oar! Super basic kids menu; so, kids are welcome, but not necessarily specifically catered to. We had nine in our party, and sat at a big round table next to the windows which offered great views of Lake Petenwell. Our server had too many tables and was therefore a bit scattered and distracted. Having made the reservation, I would hope the restaurant would be staffed-up enough to easily handle a Saturday night suppertime crowd, but they were probably one waiter short.
