I grew up in a Mexican American home, having home cooked Mexican food long before it was trendy. I’m also adept in the kitchen myself. I’ve lived in San Diego, visited Mexico… I’m just saying, I’m rarely impressed with Mexican restaurants. I’m telling you this is the best Mexican restaurant I’ve been to in Wisconsin. The food is fantastic, the people are lovely, and as a bonus, they have a huge selection of premium tequilas. Highly recommend the “Al Pastor” meat option. The marinade is flavorful and spicy even without salsa.

Being in a strip mall on the outskirts of DeForest, I was not expecting this level of quality, but El Alegre has never disappointed me (and I come here often!) Visit this place, support this family run business!

El Alegre margarita and coconut margarita were on point so we had 2 more each. Queso fundido aracherra was not skimping on meat. Carne asada dinner was bomb and with nopales. El Alegre nachos especially the pastor was killer. Left full and happy. Will definitely be returning. We got there at opening so the mood was mellow. Next time we'll sit at the bar. Great friendly service never waited long for anything.

Traveling through the area and we came on this place. We really enjoyed it, I had the enchiladas in mole, fabulous (and I’m a mole snob ;)) The place was hopping but the wait staff did a good job and were very friendly. But here’s the best part, the food came super fast, like “Wow! That was fast!” Well done El Alegre! Wish I lived in the area, I’d definitely make it a regular stop. Definitely recommend. Enjoy!

Every time we get food from El Alegre, whether it’s take out or dine in, the service and food is top notch. The owner and staff are extremely friendly. This was such a fun place to enjoy a delicious meal. We stopped here on my way home from the airport, and I am so happy we did. The waiters were great! Fast and friendly. The food was delicious. Full of flavor and spice. The vegetarian enchiladas actually had vegetables in them. They were full of broccoli, cauliflower, peppers and carrots. Stopped in here while overnighting in DeForest and was looking for decent food. The traditional Mexican menu was amazing and I recommend it, and was surprised when the waiter called his manager over to talk about trying some Tequila. They opened in 2019 (I think, according to their "4th year anniversary" sign in 2023), just before covid, but survived it. Glad they did, since we really enjoyed our food here!

There is outdoor seating that looks nice, on the deck. It isn't anything spectacular, but if you're not into smelling all the oils/smoke from the fajitas etc indoors, stay outside.

We had the parrillada norteña ($40)
The dish is for 2, and comes in this cooking pan over a flame - but there was no flame. It was more for show. A little flame under the pan would actually have been pretty good in keeping our food warmer... but it was delicious nevertheless.
The tortillas that came with the dish were corn, and lightly oiled before getting grilled (I think), and it was delicious.
All the grilled steak, ribs, chicken and veggies were delicious. The cactus was interesting for first timers (me!), and not necessarily my favorite.
Hubby and I each got a separate dish of rice, beans, guac, salad, etc.
Overall, very tasty and enjoyable.

I’ve had this place a couple times and always get sick. Rumor has it they will use produce no matter how old and no matter where they get it. They are not sanitary and are a fake Mexican restaurant. Just go to El Charro in Waunakee. Only bland taste pallet townies like this place.

Every part of our experience was on point. A friendly welcome was followed by crispy chips and fresh, smoky, perfectly spiced salsa. The Alegre Margarita was possibly the best I’ve ever had. My wife and I ate here for dinner. When we arrived there wasn't many people.

The food was fairly decent. Would recommend the El Alegre Taco Pastor and the Baja Avocado if you decide to eat here.

However, the service was super slow. It took about 20 minutes until the server came over to order our food. They had served another small group that came after us also. Also, we had only 1 water refill and was never asked if we wanted refills on the chips. I heard the server asked a few other groups if they wanted chip refills.

Service was incredible and the food was even better. We were seated promptly, despite it being extremely busy on a Friday night and the staff were all extremely friendly and attentive despite having a lot to deal with.

The food came out quickly and was absolutely phenomenal. I highly recommend the molcajete dinner, which is a sizzling stone serving dish loaded with assorted meat, seafood, and vegetables. Corn or flour tortillas come on the side, as does a platter of beans, rice, sour cream, etc. It was enough to easily feed two people, and I had plenty of leftovers as a single person.

My wife and I stopped in for our first visit the other day after hearing some friends say that they loved this new Mexican restaurant. The only place in DeForest we had ever been to and enjoyed prior for Mexican was Arrandas. So we thought we would give it a go. We showed up on a Monday a little after lunch. The place was not super busy, it looked really clean, newer looking place. There's not a ton of style or much going on for decoration. However, we were immediately greeted and seated.
The waitress was new and very polite. We ordered drinks and began to explore their huge menu. The Margeritas were tasty. Was not a big fan of their runny salsa or the cheese dip personally. I ordered the arracherra fajitas, and my wife had some Alegre special. It was all ok. It was small portions for the price, in my opinion, compared to other restaurants. The arrachera was thick and chewy. Not thin, not tenderized, and not charred up at all. Overall, I have nothing bad to say other than it was nothing special or memorable in any way. I'm glad we came and saw.. I would maybe come back on a weekend to try their Birra tacos!
