Holy shit this place is a hot mess. Nice people, but messed up on all of the food, and didn’t have dang near half the food on the menu in the restaurant. Ordered a veg rito and it was only filled with onions, asked for ranch and ketchup and they didn’t have either, fries were half cooked, and the chips were way stale. Don’t see this place lasting long.

Everyone is working hard- probably best if you speak Spanish, which I don't, but they will bend over backwards to make sure you have a good experience. We got here around 11:03 and the doors were still locked. We called the restaurant to make sure they were even open and they said the doors were unlocked. I personally think the fish tacos are a bit small for being $15 but they were really good. Usually when we are on the road up north, is rare to find good Mexican food.

We shared the s enchiladas con mole dinner plate. Very generous portion, and we were satisfied. The mole was tasty.
They did not have a few things, like ice cream and other items.

The place is huge and nicely decorated. Our server, Felipe, was nice, attentive, and professional. The cashier person on the other was not nice.

Food was absolutely delicious!! I think it was the best Mexican food I've had anywhere. I ordered enchiladas mole...but was served just regular enchiladas. I told my server Felipe...who was very nice. He was visibly upset. But I told him just bring me some mole , and it'll be all good. Mole was delicious!! My mango margarita was great..they actually put tequila in it🤪! I totally recommend this restaurant...also has fabulous views of Lake Superior!

We were so glad that this restaurant was open on July 4th!! Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be enough wait staff or kitchen help for the holiday.

Wait times on food were especially long, and our table didn’t get served all together. So while some people were served with their food, it got cold while they politely waited for the others at the table to be served.

The food itself was fabulous and the staff was very friendly. I would definitely come back hoping that the poor service we experienced was just a lack of help for one night.

The place is really cool and nice atmosphere, got sat down quickly and got the chips and salsa very quickly (recommend the queso as well) and the chips are great and this time the salsa was a bit spicy then the last time but still good, and got our drinks quickly. Drinks were made very well and as for our meal we got the steak, chicken and shrimp fajitas and it was great and good portions (this time had a lot of vegetables compared to the first time but all still very good). Would recommend anyone to check it out, this was my second time there and my first experience was better than the first but the second time was great. Very good food and drink.

I'll start by saying we are former restaurant owners so I only give honest reviews. We stopped in for margaritas and an appetizer. We ordered small 16 oz margaritas and were given medium 27 oz. Asked for mild salsa because the salsa that came with the chips was really spicy and received what I would describe as the broth from soup. Ordered the only nacho appetizer on the menu. You can see from the picture it should have been chips, cheese, tomatoes, refried beans, guacamole. What we received was a combo of California medley, fajitas, and nachos. It had kale, carrots, red and green peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, tomatoes, beans, guacamole, and chips. Didn't even seem fresh, like it was what someone else returned to the kitchen. Asked for second plate since we were sharing the appetizer, but I didn't receive it until I asked a different server. The only plus was the view of the bay was good.

I stopped in for dinner and ate in the bar. Shout out to Amanda who was great - friendly and a positive, professional attitude and very knowledgeable about the menu. She made an awesome Strawberry Margarita with a nummy sugared rim and brought the complementary house made chips and salsa. I ordered 2 tacos (#4) with chicken (hold the cheese, no aour cream). I was very happy with the food as it seemed fresh, not frozen/ pre-prepared and not deep fried or microwaved. My stomach cannot handle greasy food so I am thankful when I get what I consider home cooked food. I will definitely come back!

Food was great. Server charged me $8 for my beer, where the menu showed $4. He told me there are two different sizes, but wouldn't show me on the menu where it states that. Then told me the boss wants him to charge that much. I said "your boss wants you to upcharge cutomers?" He brought a mug (which he said is the larger size) and a glass to the table to show me the difference, but neither were the same size as my beer glass! He ultimately "gave" it to me for $5. I came here two times recently, and unfortunately I haven’t had great experiences in either of those times. The first time they got part of my order wrong because they gave me beans when I requested that I didn’t want them. When I asked him about it, he offered to give me a new plate, but he gave me a very rude look on his back to the kitchen. The food was ok overall.
The second time was unfortunately worse. I ordered and the food was good. However, a few hours later my stomach was not feeling great, and I found out that I had gotten food poisoning from that food. I stayed up the whole night and it was awful. I will unfortunately never be coming back to this place.

Wednesday evening, hardly busy. Greeted and seated right away. Then our waitress came to the table. She was dressed in heavily soiled clothes, while everyone else seemed to be properly groomed and dressed. When she first showed up, I thought she was the janitor/maintenance person.
Food was amply portioned and tasted as expected, except one order was incorrect, and we were told what was ordered (on the menu) wasn't available. A different dinner was ordered and quickly served
The prices were fine.
If we ever return to town, we wouldn't exclude it as a possibility, but probably wouldn't go out of our way to go.

This place is hilarious. I believe there was a real, actual pianist in the restaurant playing Fastball's late 90's hit 'The Way' and the bartender couldn't pour a beer if her life depended on it. The attached photo is after the head settled -- I haven't even touched it yet! The only way this place is staying open is because of the hotel across the parking lot and not having any other nearby options.

We stayed at the hotel next door and given a coupon. Other people at the hotel said it was a nice place. Our service was sub-par, we sat and ate at the bar, bartender served our drinks and placed our order and left, only came back when our food was ready. My family and I have been here many times, with many different experiences. Thus, if you come here, temper your expectations.

If the boss (owner) is not in the house, the food and service is sub-par at best. The best example of this was when I ordered the taco salad. One time, it came with minimal meat, tons of lettuce, and no cheese. The next time it came with minimal meat, minimal lettuce, and so much cheese, it made me gag. The third time, it had the proper portions of all the ingredients. What was the difference? The boss was in the house. This has been proven many other times. If the boss is there, food and service is excellent. If the boss is absent, you're wasting your hard earned money. The one good thing this place has going for it is the lunch buffet. That has never been sub-par, boss or no boss.

In the end, I have to rate this place 3 stars. I'll go there, but I do so with tempered expectations. However, with their higher prices and sub-par food and service, it is often worth going to the Mexican restaurant in Washburn instead of gambling my money, wondering if it's worth it.

The food at El charro is awesome. There's a hotel right next door you can stay at if your on the road and you can walk right over to El charro and get a good meal, great service, and alcohol if you choose. All for a pretty decent price. Don't hesitate to stop in you won't be disappointed.

Was in town over night and was looking for a place to eat. A friend had mentioned it and after looking at the reviews (mostly negative) decided to give it a try. Well, I most definitely feel they knocked it out of the park. Was awkwoledged and sat quickly. Was given specials and recommendations off the bat. Our server had a wonderful personality and any question or need was met promptly. My meal was exactly what I expected from what I ordered and special hot sauce was given to me, free of charge, upon request. Price to portion was accurate. Venue itself was fantastic. I gave this restaurant a second chance since the Mexican restaurant in Washburn was packed and the couple we were dining with suggested eating here.
My first visit here, several months ago, the Chile Rellenos were still cold inside. Sent it back and this time cheese was only partially melted.
Second visit was last week for dinner on a Friday. Place was fairly empty, so that is telling. I ordered Chile Rellenos again. When I cut into it, it was filled with steak....no cheese. I had to go find a server since she didn't come back to see how everything was. She told me they were out of cheese and had been for a month. No apologies or offer to get me something else. I felt I should have been comped in some way.
Enchilada and sides were mediocre, server was inattentive both times.
We have been to the Mexican restaurant in Washburn 4 times in 3 weeks and the food and service are great.
Coming from Chicago, the choice of top notch restaurants is endless. I have learned to not trust reviews of restaurants in this area. Many are just so-so, some are bad (will never go back) and there are a few that actually have good food consistently.

I've been in the restaurant business for 25 years. One bite of and smell of the lettuce told us it was full of chemical. The waiter never returned to ask if everything was OK. I went to the manager on duty who said he would check. Several minutes later and no one came to our table. We stood to leave and saw all the wait staff and manager sitting chatting at a table. We approached the owner? who said, "We get all our lettuce from a bag. It should be fine." He just looked at us. We just walked out.

There is a bit of room for improvement, but overall it was an ok experience. The inside of the restaurant is gorgeous! The chairs are really neat too. Our waiter maded a couple mistakes but quickly fixed them and fixed them on the bill before we had to ask him to. Restrooms definitely need some improvement. The stall door in the men's room, you have to lift up the door to get it closed. The toilet seat is broken in half, but atleast it helps spread your cheeks...

The food here is super good, but also inconsistent. About two weeks ago I came here with my family, my mom and I got the three amigos, and it was so good that yesterday I went back, and ordered it again. This time though the amazing juicy shredded pork had turned to diced chicken, the pepper was stuffed with cheese instead of meat, and it didn't come with tortillas. My wife and I have Mexican quite often and this was our first visit to El Charro in Ashland. We love margaritas and they did not disappoint. Not too sweet, and not too sour. We had nachos as well, and they were fabulous. Service was quick and friendly. We will be back!

Been back two more times and still had fabulous food and service. Don't understand the negative reviews. They must have listened and changed for the better. I'm really enjoying this place, and I've been to over 20 different Mexican restaurants throughout Wisconsin. Will continue to be my go to Mexican restaurant in northern Wisconsin.

The poorest service I've seen in years. The waiter had to us who had this dish or that for every plate he brought out. He took the order in an around the table fashion, so it should have been rather simple to deliver our meals. He was very polite and El Charro was clean. The poor server simply needed training. The food was below average. The enchilada sauce was too mild and all the dishes were best suited for children.

My friend and I went for dinner on Cinco de Mayo. We waited 45 minutes for our margaritas after three different people asked us if we had been helped. We watched others who came in after us get theirs. Finally they arrived, but my friend's didn't taste like it had alcohol in it. We proceeded to order - keep in mind it's now been almost an hour that we've been there. When our food arrived almost another hour after that, it wasn't even what we ordered. My burrito was very bland with no taste to it. The chicken inside was mushy and it was missing some of the ingredients it was supposed to have. My friend's meal was not what she ordered either. All in all, very disappointed with the whole experience. Yes, the place was very busy, but that shouldn't be used as an excuse, especially knowing what holiday it was.

The food here was delicious! I ordered the lunch fajitas and my son a chicken cheese quesadilla, both were great. My only complaint is that service was a bit unorganized and slow with only 2 tables of customers, they probably do a better job at dinner time.
