We arrived for our first time being there about 545 PM on a Tuesday afternoon. Had patrons in there, but not overly busy. No one acknowledged or even looked at us when we came in. We sat at a table for probably about 15 min before I finally walked up too the bar. The tots with cheese and bacon were good. We sat there for another probably 40 min waiting on our burgers. We heard the cook tell her our order was up. She told him to wait a minute because their POS was acting up and both bartenders apparently had to work on it. So our food sat there for over 10 min not even under a heat lamp. Waited on a few more customers after the POS issue. She then came to our table and asked if we were ready to pay our bill. Then asked, have you even gotten your food yet? Walked back over to the kitchen and brought our burgers and onion rings. Obviously there were not hot. I went up, told her, and she offered to redo them, but my son and I had already been there for over an hour. We just asked for boxes to go. She was pleasant about it and did not charge us. So that I give a kudos. You can come back to fix a problem, but when you know there is food ready it should be served right away. Especially when we know it's ready and just sitting there.

We’ve loved this place for years. They’ve built a reputation on burgers and they’re gonna ruin it. The wonderful/poor waitress had to run from table to table (apologizing as she went) so we could all share ketchup….(because they were out) on the Saturday night of Father’s Day weekend. Duh…. Owner - go to the Pig in Sauk and buy ketchup!!!
We asked where the owners were? - Not there.
We asked why there were no bussers? Because they were run ragged. - None scheduled?!!
C’mon new owners!!! Get in the game. If you want this “institution” to survive you need to be “boots on the ground” 24/7 till it’s AT LEAST as good as it once was.
So SAD. ☹️
PS… Don’t order sauteed onions on your burger any more cause they must be frozen ones that are soggy fried…..😖

Went here a few years ago and don't really remember the food much but took my young children here to eat while hiking in the area. Very cute spot. Stopped by Friday night, been coming here sporadically last 25 years. Service was terrible, watching bartender just lean on the bar talking to someone while completely ignoring the other patrons, while the other bartender was so drunk, loud and obnoxious. Unfortunately, had to stop back to collect the money from one of the machines since they couldn't pay on the spot; again, sitting there with an empty drink for 5 minutes, bartender back towards us the whole time. Work ethics sure aren't what they used to be, good luck w/new ownership and staying in business.

I’m posting this review on behalf of someone I know dearly:

“The Merrimack Ferry Crossing Bar won all of these awards for the best hamburger, so I thought I'd stop there on my road trip today. I ordered a Miller Lite, cheeseburger and tater tots. I sat at the end of the bar which coincidentally gave me a view of the cook. The cook had no clue what she was doing. She was cooking one order at a time and taking forever on it. I was three quarters into my beer and I had taken my pills anticipating the burger would come out in 15 minutes or less. She put out the one order she was working on, then there was nothing cooking at all for 10 minutes. I had no idea what she was doing. There were four tickets hanging up. I called my waitress over & asked what was going on. She said, “We're not McDonald's.” I replied, “I never said you were”. She said just a minute then went to get this little thing they had printed out. Apparently it’s an ongoing issue so they prepared written speech instead of talking to people, or fixing the problem. It read, “We are not a restaurant. We are a bar that serves good food, and that takes time. Some people wait for 2 hours or more.” I said, “Well, that's unacceptable. Cancel my order. In fact, you don't have to cancel anything because it's not even cooking.” She got a little snippy with me. The attitude, time and service resulted in her not getting a tip from me. I read reviews of other people and the replies from the owner to people criticizing how long it takes for an order. Listen to the customers!! I've had a lot of bar burgers over the years. A lot of bartenders tending bar and cooking would work circles around that place.
First and last time I step foot in that establishment!”

This is a bar that serves great food. The best wifi password I've ever encountered in the wild! The burgers and tots were great and the want staff was such a vibe. This is an authentic Wisconsin watering hole down to the arcade machines, beer selection, dollar bills on the wall, and friendly locals. It's located right next to the north terminal for the ferry and a perfect stop of you're exploring the local state parks. Will be going back the next time im in the area.

I admit, I came here because their burger was rated in the top 8 in WI. It was nice. Very dive bar like. But nice, not dirty. Friendly people. Enjoyable atmosphere, just basic WI bar, next to a lake. I had high expectations for the burger. I had the 5 alarm burger. Texture good. The taste was kinda bland. I expected more. The sauce was decent, didn't seem to qualify as "5 alarm". Not super spicy. I'd say it was a good burger and I'd come back again to try a different burger. I've had burgers from another place on the top 8 list and I would rate this place, Ferry Xing, below the other place. Just thought it'd be better. Their frys were really standard french frys, not too special, but good. Chips are obviously just from a bag of chips they buy. So all in all, I would recommend. Nice people, nice place, good food.

Made a special trip to check out this bar after hearing it was in finals for best burger. Initially we were greeted and warned about the wait for the table. We had already driven 45 minutes so felt invested to wait it out. Over an hour to get seated and finally placed our order. At this point, it was if they did not want to make any eye contact with us because the food was taking ridiculously long and our waitress stopped checking on us. A few patrons that arrived after us got their food before us. Not sure if they called ahead so we didn't press the waitress about it. The food came and it was good, but not 2 hours and 20 minutes good. I'm not sure if one burger is cooked at a time because when our food came out there were maybe only 15 people left. Then we got our bill, the waitress mentioned we had to wait quite awhile but hoped we liked our meals. And then she asked what we were drinking (ordered when waiting for the table). We thought "well maybe they will comp us for the extreme wait time", but that was not the case. Due to their popularity with locals and visitors during ferry season, I'm sure they won't care about our dissatisfaction.

On 6/6/23. We showed up that evening for dinner. There seemed to be a party going on, as 2-3 tables where pushed together and there was a good group of kids. But there was open tables, so the 3 of us sit down. With as busy as it was, it took a few minutes for the waitress to come over. No biggy, we saw the large party and knew it might be alittle slow. We ordered our food and drinks. Never was told that there was going to be a huge wait on the food. 10,15,30,45 mins go by. No communication as to when the food would come out. Waitress never came back to the table to see if drinks needed to be refilled. We had to go to the bar to have a coke refilled. During this time only 1 person was staffed on the grill, the other two working only where handling drinks. The cook left with tickets still waiting to go to the bathroom. She had enough time on the way back to stop and talk/play pool with a few kids. Never washed her hands once she got back to the grill. During the 45min wait several other people went up to ask about their order. We went up to ask about our order as well. This was between a 45m-1h wait. Was told we where 3-4 tickets back. We paid for our drinks and left. Should not take over an hour for a burger and chicken sandwiches. Never had anyone come explain or apologize for the wait, nor offered a basket of fries to snack on while we waited. Nothing. Zero communication. When my dinner partner wrote a review last week, the owner contacted her and basically called her a lier. Bothered her enough she took down the review. I don't live in the area so really not concerned, as I doubt I will ever be back there. We have all been to places that have had a bad night, people call in sick... Ect. As a owner you say your sorry, offer to make it better next time, and move on. I did not plan on writing a review, but his actions against my friend where uncalled for, and is poor business ethics. Supposed to have great burgers, wish we would have gotten the chance to try them. Now, never will.

I've been using the ferry for years , first time was in the 70's . Chevy van road trip , pretty sure we were able to drive up a precariously steep kinda road to the top of Gibraltar Rock .
Well anyhoo , I make an effort to stop at Xing whenever I'm able to plan a route through Merrimac . That's right , while yer in the area RIDE THE FERRY
it's a true Wisconsin treasure . But whatever ya figure out , make time to stop in and say hi to the nice folks at
FERRY XING BAR AND GRILL . MY fav is the plain ham n cheese on bread ,
