We had a very disappointing experience here. Our large party waited over an hour for a table, only to watch multiple smaller groups who arrived after us get seated first. At no point were we offered the option to split into smaller tables, which would have been a reasonable solution—especially since we had teenagers waiting with us.

When I politely asked the hostess about this, she gave us attitude. When I further asked why no one suggested splitting the group, she turned her back on me and walked away, then went to speak with (what I assume was) the manager. Instead of apologizing for the wait or offering any solution, the manager came over and rudely said, “Do you have a question?” His tone was dismissive, and when we asked again about splitting the group, he simply stated, “I’ve been here 12 years and we don’t do that.”

What made this worse wasn’t just the long wait—it was the lack of professionalism and courtesy. A simple apology and acknowledgment of the inconvenience would have gone a long way. Instead, we were treated as if our concerns didn’t matter.

Unfortunately, this experience left us feeling frustrated, unwelcome, and disrespected.

Absolute worst experience I’ve ever had here. Been 20+ times over the last 10 years. Had a group of 8, arrived around 5:45…waited well over an hour with 8+ parties sat ahead of us after arriving after us. Terrible communication. Manager didn’t give 2 craps and said we’ve been here for 12 years, it’s always first come first serve and they would never ask to split up our party for faster seating. Unsure if I will ever return:

After our Meet the Authors event in Madison, we had the pleasure of dining at Gates & Brovi — and it was the perfect way to end a meaningful day. The atmosphere is warm, relaxed, and effortlessly stylish, creating a space that invites connection and conversation.

We stopped in for dinner but just stayed for cocktails and fries, mostly because of the prices and overall experience. $20 for a poboy without a side felt kind of wild. We were hoping for more seafood or Cajun options, I wonder if I completely imagined the Cajun influence from years ago.

The fries were fine, but definitely on the expensive side for what you get. Oddly, no sauce included. Not the end of the world, just unexpected.

Now, this isn’t really the restaurant’s fault, but the vibe was kind of chaotic. There were kids flailing around everywhere like we accidentally walked into a 90s Applebee’s on free balloon night. Maybe it was just bad timing, but it made it hard to justify spending that much on dinner.

Also, we were charged extra for Bulleit in a drink that already listed Bulleit in the ingredients. Not a huge deal, but definitely confusing.

It's such a cool little restaurant! Immediately after walking in, I was greeted by nothing but smiles and kind faces! Josie was my server, and she was bright, bubbly, and so helpful! She had great knowledge of food and beverage options. She was so good it was like she already knew what I wanted to eat before I ordered it! Also, I met the manager, and I forgot her name, so I'm sorry to her for that. But she was really kind and caring as well. Everyone who works at Gates and Brovi just seem like kind, welcoming people, and you really feel it inside the restaurant on a slow Monday night. Worst service I've ever had here (& i have been here several times). A guy in a green plaid shirt set my beer down on my table and spilled a bunch of it. Then, with about as much enthusiasm, he set my plate of food down, and if he said anything, i sure didn't hear him.

I could have gone to a 'chain' type restaurant at Hilldale, but wanted to support a small local business.

Had a lovely meal here! Only feedback would be to make the veggie burger fully vegetarian. When my husband (lifelong vegetarian) ordered it, the waitress asked if the anchovy-containing sauce should be included, and he said sure! I realized then he had no idea what anchovy was, and I had to tell him it’s fish. It’s good that he was warned about the anchovy, but it doesn’t make a ton of sense to me why that needs to be in it. I’m confident a delicious veggie burger could be offered that’s fully vegetarian-friendly!

Immaculate. Stunning. Nostalgic. My partner & I read an article in the Madisonian Magazine raving about G&Bs clam chowder and decided to venture on over to the West side. We were immediately overwhelmed by how cozy and nostalgic the atmosphere calmed us and were treated with amazing customer service.

THE FOOD!!! Holy moly!!! Everything was easily a 10/10. The clam chowder? Perfect. Fried smelt? Mindblowing. Caesar salad? Delightful. Salmon dinner special? One of the best meals I’ve ever had. And the dessert?!!! The Almond cake with door county cherries?!? Upsettingly good.

You may not be brought to happy tears like I was after eating at Gates & Brovi (I’m quite dramatic) but I can guarantee you’ll have a damn good time.

I had the Walleye Special that was perfectly seared, seasoned perfectly with tiny sized slivers of delicious organic potatoes. FABULOUS! Staff is friendly, professional, and attentive. Prices were fair for the excellent quality of fresh food.
Parking after 5:30 is easy and although no handicap parking.. access to entrance is easy.

If you’ve ever been to my ultimate favorite “special” restaurant thats pricey but well worth it on a special occasion then you will love this for the more casual affair n great for a date!

Gates and Brovi has a great seafood joint atmosphere, combined with an awesome neighborhood location that is within walking distance for many. Unfortunately I believe they have relied on this advantage to let the quality of the food slip. Many things have gone down hill from the high quality it used to be. The cod sandwich was a huge disappointment. The bread tasted like cheap factory bread that gets really soggy right away, and the fish breading was really mushy. The fries tasted like they were frozen from the grocery store. The same was true with the burger. I hope they return to their original quality. The fries used to be amazing, and the fish sandwich was crispy and delicious.

I am reviewing just because I have been here in the past and really enjoyed it, but the most recent time (sep 2024) the food was really disappointing. The calamari tasted like the fryer oil was well past it’s use on the good pieces, and some pieces were so fishy/off tasting we did not continue eating it after those bites. We got the specials, the whitefish was perfectly cooked and very clean tasting, but the rest of the dish was underwhelming and the sweet corn purée was indeed sweet, like dessert. I did not eat it. The fried fish sandwich fell apart a few bites in with awkward cuts of veg. However I will say the staff was very nice and attentive (two gentleman- managers or owners? were extra on top of things) . and while some reviews say parking is difficult I say to them this restaurant is very clear that they have limited parking and you can park in the neighborhood. I don’t mind that I just want good food.

Restored my faith in Madison cuisine. Came late on a Friday. No problem finding seats for a group of five, but I understand it gets really busy. Cheese curds were best I remember ever having. Calamari was outstanding. The one honey blonde beer I had was good, not a huge selection of local drafts though.
They deserve 6 stars for bluegill sandwich and the side salad it came with, amazing! I think was ~$31 per person plus tip.

I really enjoyed the Nashville hot honey chicken sandwich. Service is very good. The acoustic ms on the restaurant are not very good so it gets very loud and can be hard to hear each other speak sometimes. There is no lot, but there is plenty of street parking on side streets. Give yourself an extra 5 to 10 minutes to walk from side streets that are further away.

Food is good and We usually order take out b/c it can get quite busy there. Also parking is a hassle - especially in winter. Biggest issue there are frequently errors with takeout orders. Missing parts of the order, wrong food, etc. If you order take out, double check or you might be going hungry or get something else substituted without your knowledge. :( Most recently we ordered 2 burgers but got 2 chicken sandwiches. It's like nobody actually reads the order intake and clearly nobody checks the orders. The kicker is that most of the time when we've experienced errors the restaurant is less busy than usual.

I really don’t write a lot of reviews but it occurred to me tonight that I’ve probably been to G&B more times than any other restaurant in Madison so I feel like I can speak with some authority. Here’s the thing - sure it looks like a casual neighborhood joint — and it is — but the standard is so consistently excellent that it’s like a fine dining establishment. The food? Always amazing. The service? Warm, welcoming, attentive. The cocktails? Incredible - only complaint is they come up with new ones so much that I don’t get to try all the ones I want to. Vibe? Perfect. And what’s amazing is that this is true for every time I’ve been there. They hit it every time. They don’t miss! I’m not even going to recommend a dish because everything is fantastic. Order whatever you want - it will be great! Full disclosure: I am feeling particularly endeared to them tonight because we took my six year old there tonight a few days post recovery from a nasty flu and, like, it was curative. He lost his appetite days ago and it didn’t even come back after he got better. I don’t think he’s eaten more than half a popsicle in three days. It’s been TOUGH. But then it occurred to me - I just needed to get a plate of G&B chicken tenders in front of him. He ate every. single. one. And lest you think I’m a terrible mother for curing him with fried chicken, I will point out that the chicken tenders here are incredible, homemade and with super high quality chicken meat. Homemade ranch. Perfect fries. Anyway, long story short, I could not love this place more. Go.

My friend and I both had the signature Chicken Picatta and shared the smelt. The Picatta was outstanding. The smelt was good but the tarter sauce was even better! Our waitress was fabulous. We went right at opening and were immediately seated. Restaurant filled quickly and then there was a wait. There is a nice cocktail/beer list.
Other reviews mention the lack of parking. Don't let that deter you. Just know you'll have to park and walk a little distance.

I’m not usually the type to leave a review, but the level of pure ecstasy I experienced when I took a bite of the Nashville hot honey chicken sandwich is indescribable. The Almond cake with cherry compote filled me with pure childlike joy. It may be hard for me to return to civilian life after dining with the gods.

This is a busy, crowded restaurant with waiting times of nearly an hour before we were seated. I had the cod fish fry & my 2 companions had the bluegill fish fry. We had delicious cheese curds and a very surprisingly fantastic watermelon salad for appetizers. I would have enjoyed some appetizers rather than my cod fish fry bc the batter was soggy and not edible. The place was packed and extremely loud as the bar was definitely full and most patrons were drinking as well or sitting to hear one another. Parking is typical of Madison except for the parking ogre at the veterinarians office across from B&G who calmly explained that we couldn't park in one of the right open spots outside the veterinarians clinic. Wow! What an exhausting and disappointing night out! 🫤🙄🙁

Great bluegill BLT but the salad that came with it was even better! My kid ate all of the grilled cheese with bacon and my husband really liked the Mafaldine pasta. We got our food in less than 10 minutes on a Saturday night. That's gotta be some restaurant record!

This was our first visit to Gates & Brovi, the first of many to come!

We love great food, but the restaurants that become our go-to places have to have a great environment and out of this world service. Gates & Brovi succeeded on all three counts.

Our waitress left us feeling that we were the very best thing that had happened to her all week.

Even though it was a Wednesday night and parking is difficult, this restaurant was filled with happy diners who clearly loved being there. All the tables were full when we arrived, but we waited only about 15 minutes to be seated.

And the food was outstanding.

My wife ordered the NASHVILLE STYLE HOT HONEY CHICKEN SANDWICH. I'm a hot pepper wuss, so it was too spicy for me, but she loved it.

We also had a pizza made with, among other things, burrata cheese, pistachios, and fresh arugula on top. I may have eaten better pizza sometime in my life, but I can't remember when.

Back to the parking. Because of where Gates & Brovi is located, it is difficult to find parking nearby. But don't let that stop you. If you're willing to walk a couple blocks from your car to the restaurant, you will know what I mean.

Gates & Brovi opened in 2012 and gave life to an area of Madison that serves mostly as a transition to others. Before you go, just be aware of parking. There is a small lot with limited spots a couple doors down that it shares with the Cat Annex.

Once inside, the restaurant gives the vibe of your local neighborhood bar, but with an extra layer of comfort. I’ve visited on many occasions from happy hours and casual dinners to brunch special events and even my bachelor party. Everyone there is kind and provides for a wonderful experience.

As far as the food goes, everything is amazing. I have not had a disappointing meal. For starters, don’t sleep on the smelt. It’s salty and tasty with a tangy tartar sauce to dip into. My first love here was the shrimp po’boy. A big highlight is their pizza. There are traditional offerings and then some true stunners like the Clam, Italian Sausage and Leek and the Guanjuato! For my bachelor party we ordered one of each for our group of 13 and it was the perfect amount of food. We also did a round of oysters which were a delightfully fun treat.
