Foods good atmosphere is nice, but if you aren’t dining in the restaurant don’t bother ordering, 116$ worth of food and they couldn’t even fill the bowls up. 14$ artichoke dip and they gave us half a bowl, 12$ salad and again they gave us half a bowl. Very disappointing.

We’ve been to Genisa Wine Bar a handful of times and always leave happy! Both indoor and outdoor dining are excellent options. Outside near the river under the string lights is absolutely magical.

Their wine list is extensive, specialty cocktails are also well crafted, and the option to do wine flights makes the experience even more enjoyable.

We’ve dined here with a large group (around 15 people), and the staff did a wonderful job accommodating us. While service can be a bit leisurely, the quality of food and drinks is always worth the wait—maybe that’s part of the authentic Italian experience. 😉

The menu is designed for sharing, which we love. The meatballs are a must-try, especially the trio that lets you sample different styles. The pizzas are always excellent, and the warm olives are a personal favorite starter. (I have yet to try any of their pastas.)

For dessert, don’t skip the limoncello sponge cake—it’s the perfect ending, especially paired with an Americano.

Highly recommend for date nights, group gatherings, or anyone wanting a little taste of Italy by the river!

Extremely overpriced for mediocre food and tiny portions. I paid over $20 for a pork bolognese that had TWO pieces of pork in it. I'm not exaggerating - literally two pieces of meat, and the amount of pasta did not make up for it either. The portion was tiny. I was so disappointed in this place. The atmosphere is an attempt at a trendy wine bar vibe, but instead gives a quite lackluster experience. The tables are super close together which ruined any chance of having the "cool" atmosphere save the day. It was cramped and uncomfortable, truly a waste of money. If anything, I would recommend sitting at the bar and getting drinks only. Save yourself the money and disappointment if you're looking for a good meal.

I’ve debated this for a few weeks now. This is based off two separate experiences. First trip was great, sat outside, two pizzas, wine and a good night out.

Second trip didn’t even get to food. No reservations, just showed up on a Saturday night. With the entire inside empty except the bar and front table of 4. We asked for a seat for two and were placed in the back of the building behind the pizza oven and right by the bathroom doors. My wife was able to tell how this instantly put me off and we decided to leave after 2 mins.

I’ll never understand why people do that. It’s an empty building and I have to be shoved into the worst table in the house? Come on guys you can fit me into a servers rotation without messing up areas when the place has 8 people in it.

Fair tip if you try this place ask to sit outside or request a table in a good spot. The food was worth it, but felt too insulted to have it.

We decided to go to Genisa because we were tired of the same old Janesville chain restaurants, we didn’t go in with big expectations. BUT, we came out pleasantly surprised and extremely happy and satisfied. It can feel like restaurant service of late it taking a sharp downturn in how they treat guests, but I can say we were very happy with our server and service from all of the staff, who were all very friendly. The food was also fantastic specifically the pepperoni pizza, lasagna and garlic bread. I will definitely be back for those. Unfortunately the cobbler was lacking for me, I wish it had more crunch, but of course that’s personal preference. Regardless, we will be returning, and I hope they can replicate our first experience again.

Erin and her team at Genisa were incredibly wonderful to work with. My husband and I had our welcome party the day before our wedding at Genisa and it was such an amazing night. They catered to our group of 80 people and while the space is not huge, it worked out perfect. The food was amazing and the wine even better!
Erin's communication was prompt and working with her was a breeze. She was willing to do everything I requested in order to make our night work just the way I had envisioned it.
Thank you Erin and team for helping us start our wedding weekend off with a bang. You guys were truly wonderful to work with. I highly recommend Genisa for your next catered event or even just or a night out to dinner as everything is delicious there!

So went to Genisa with some friends a couple of weeks ago. The food was good but my drinks were overpriced. I ordered a martini with blue cheese olives and they charged me $15 for the martini (which is high for Janesville) and an up charge of $2 for a call liquor, which I can understand, but then charged an additional $2 for the olives! If you can't afford to include a couple of Olives out of four dollar jar I think you should stop offering them.

We were in Janesville on a summer weekend and wanted to eat somewhere with a patio, and someone recommended this place - oh my goodness, I felt like we were transported to Italy, what an experience!
In a historic brick building on the river, with patio umbrellas and people enjoying wine and spritzes, the setting is magical. Our server Claire knew the menu and wine selection well and gave us great suggestions, really helpful.
We had heard about their wood fired pizzas, and with their pillowy sourdough crust, they were indeed pretty incredible. Our group ordered the Salsiccia, generously sprinkled with excellent fennel pork sausage, one with crispy little pepperoni cups, and the fig and prosciutto, which was an amazing contrast of flavors and textures, so good. My husband cannot pass up gnocchi if it’s on the menu, and this Loaded Baker Potato version was especially rich and creamy.
We were too full for dessert, but as the server brought out an impressively towering slice of chocolate cake to a couple at the next table, our jaws dropped - something to save room for next time!

Best Italian restaurant in Janesville in my opinion! I love the pizza and the gnocchi. My favorite gnocchi of all time is at Bar Corallini in Madison but that’s a far drive from me. From genisa I think it’s the sage gnocchi I like more than the loaded baked potato gnocchi just because I think sour cream and gnocchi aren’t the best mix. I love the spicy pizza too. First time coming here with a friend, we ordered a pizza to split and sangrias. The pizza arrived with over half the crust burnt to the point of being inedible. We nicely mentioned it to the server and we refused his offer to make a new one as the inside of the pizza was fine, we just couldn’t eat the crust. He took the pizza off our check so we didn’t have to pay for it. We were more than satisfied with this. As we were leaving, the chef then pulls us aside and hands up two pizza boxes with a brand new pizza he had made fresh to make up for it! Very impressed with the service and will be returning because of it!

We decided to give this place a try after hearing good things about the food. And what we heard was totally spot on! And for a Tuesday night, they were surprisingly busy.

I had a salad, my husband a pizza, and we shared some meatballs (ok we shared it all). We left pleasantly full and were basking in the glow of the great food and atmosphere the rest of the evening.

Our server was just the right attentive, taking very good care of us, while not hovering.

Some might consider the food costly, but you certainly get what you pay for. The food here is of high quality, and worth the price.

We had our rehearsal dinner here for ~35 people and it was the dreamiest day ever. Erin the event manager is so fantastic at what she does and ensured the entire evening ran so smoothly. Our friends and family raved about the food and wine and the space was absolutely beautiful. We loved having an indoor and outdoor space and the view of the river was amazing. Great experience coinciding with the Tour of America's Dairyland bike race. I was able to sit outside with my family and riding gear and felt welcomed to do so. One of our favorite spots! Have been to Genisa multiple times but just went again for my fiance's birthday. Emailed with the manager, Joshua, ahead of time with requests and he was so kind throughout it all! He accommodated the table request I had made, had a pre-ordered bottle of wine ready to go upon our arrival, and delivered it himself to our table with a hand written birthday card. Our most recent visit was a nightmare. They sat us down like normal, without saying anything about a long wait. We ordered our food and waited. Over an hour later, our waitress apologized and informed us that a private party was causing longer wait times. So now we've been held hostage for over an hour and still have only seen appetizers. Looking around the restaurant, it was all the same people as when we walked in, and none of them had their food either. We didn't get our food until 90 minutes after we ordered.

They could have at least told us that there would be a long wait before we ordered and waited all night.

I attended the Old Fashioned class at Genisa last Sunday and loved it! It was an interactive class where we could ask questions and chat with the group. We learned how to make our own Old Fashioned while Kris, the bar manager, walked us through the history of the Old Fashioned. The drinks were all so good, but the Banana Fosters Old Fashioned really blew me away! I thought it would be too sweet for me but it was perfectly balanced. Kris is a really talented mixologist making innovative & delicious drinks!

Genisa is my favorite spot in Janesville. I love all the different events they put on. Whether it's listening to live music on their beautiful patio, attending a wine dinner or cocktail class, it's always a great time. The staff is warm and welcoming so I always feel right at home. The food, cocktails and wine program are all outstanding! I am so excited for their new restaurant next door to open. I'm told the Banana Fosters Old Fashioned will be on the menu there and I can hardly wait!

Always a fantastic experience with very helpful staff. Kris makes the best chocolate martinis and the sweater weather old fashioned is to die for. We went in for the Valentine’s Day special menu. It was great and we really loved the Beet risotto and carrots with goat cheese.

Absolutely HORRIBLE experience. The "host" was completely unreasonable and not helpful at all. I booked our reservation online, and the system inexplicably defaulted our 6:15p timeslots @ the "chef's counter". The host pointed out that the "chef's counter," was indicated in my email, and indeed the "chef's counter" language was buried at the bottom of my email confirmation. But the reservation system was not not intuitive or explicit at all, and the chef's counter was completely not fit for purpose for a party of three. It was clear others had encountered this issue previously, and there had obviously been no intent to rectify the lack of clarity about the low counter-type seating arrangement. The chef's counter is narrow, low to the ground, and extremely uncomfortable. Every server and patron brushes by and bumps your chair.

Also, the food portions are ridiculously small and hugely overpriced. The charcuterie board has dried out cheese and greasy salami. Even the crustinies we're store bought, not made onsight.

We ordered the sacilian pizza with sausage, and the main crust was raw. My wife said her side of the pizza was more cooked, but my side was mostly raw. And that screams of inconsistent preparation.

Our friend ordered the butternut squash pizza, which was actually quite good (we tried it). The apple cobbler was also good (we tried that too).

UPDATE: 20 minutes into our experience, the host offered to move us to a table, with a 50 minute time limit. We elected to stay out and finish the way we started. All in all, really disappointed. I would not recommend. We don't be back.

Oh my goodness, where do I start? I remember growing up and the only nice places to eat were Prime Quarter, Texas Roadhouse, or Olive Garden, unless you wanted to drive to Rockford or Madison! I love that Janesville is getting more options for an elevated dining experience, and Genisa was so affordable ($100 for six of us to have a drink and full bellies)! The aesthetics and ambiance were welcoming and warm, while maintaining an upscale experience. I love that entrees are intended to share and I was wowed by every dish! Our hostess welcomed me home (I'm currently living elsewhere, but was raised in Janesville), and both the hostess and server wished me a happy birthday, it made the experience seem very personal. Our server was the sweetest person, and was so helpful, assisting us with navigating the drink and dinner menus, and they were so attentive! I loved the browned butter gnocchi, I will definitely be back for more! All in all, the drinks were amazing, the food was dreamy, the staff was the best I've encountered in a long while, and Genisa made my 23rd birthday the most memorable one yet! 11/10, keep up the amazing work!!

My husband and I ate here to celebrate our anniversary. I was expecting good food, as I’ve heard good things from friends who have eaten here, but even coming in with high expectations I was absolutely blown away. We ordered drinks, salads, the pork belly pizza, and tiramisu. Every single thing was delicious. The flavors were unexpected and exciting in the very best way, and the crust on that brick oven pizza was perfection. Typically a pizza crust is just there as a vehicle for toppings, but this crust was a key player in the pizza experience.
We didn’t initially plan on ordering dessert, but everything was so perfect we thought we’d give it a shot, and I’m so happy we did. Tiramisu is my favorite dessert, and I’ve ordered it at many different restaurants over the years, but this was the best one I’ve ever tasted.
The service was friendly and knowledgeable, and attentive without being “hovery”. The restaurant was very busy, but our food came without a long wait. The atmosphere of the restaurant was cheerful and social.
I am so happy a restaurant like this is in Janesville, and will definitely be a return customer.

We came in for date night. We visited based on a recommendation by a friend who raved about the apps and patio. I love wine and my husband loves pizza so it was a great mix for both of us! We had the fall salad (tasty but fairly small), Italian meatballs (good) and two pizzas, the NY pepperoni and the farmers market (arugula, delicata squash, fig, balsamic). My husband loved his pick of the pepperoni and I’d say the farmers market was probably the BEST PIZZA IVE EVER HAD!!!! Highly recommend and we WILL be back!!!

My husband and I visited Genisa on a Sunday evening and ordered the Farmers Market Pizza with wine. It was outstanding! We’ve traveled to Italy a number of times, and I believe this pizza was better than what I had in Italy. Service was excellent. Overall, a great experience! We will definitely return!

I was traveling for business and usually stay in Madison but found myself in Janesville. And it was rather late. And then I found a wine bar with a MEATBALL FLIGHT! Three meatballs and a small Caesar salad. Who does that? The food was obviously fun. Service was great. Cool vibe. Outdoor seating or plenty of open seating inside was available. First time. Excellent atmosphere. They were out of a few popular dishes (which goes to show how well they do), but that didn’t set us back. All the food was outstanding. Our server Sasha was absolutely fantastic! She was spunky, high energy, and engaging. Casual nice attire. Highly recommend for a family evening out, a cocktail hour and appetizers with friends, or the much needed date night. You guys rock! Our local hockey team had a ticket pickup party (you go to pick up your season tickets). It was supposed to be at Bodacious Brew, but apparently, there was some sort of snafu, so the party was moved to Genisa. I found the venue & the food delightful. They gave us ice water or you could buy a drink. We had charcuterie & pizza. Now, I'm picky about pizza. It's all about whether I like the sauce. I loved the pizza at Genisa! Would totally go there to have their pizza again. The wait staff were pleasant & I liked the setup. There are 3 different levels you can sit at outside & it's next to the river. I got my tickets & some yummy food 🙂

I visited Genisa’s with one of my best friends yesterday and we had a PHENOMENAL time! Our server Sasha was so fantastic with recommendations that I even had her surprise me with a cocktail at the end of our dinner. Lots of Italian dishes. Brick oven style pizza. They have very good wine selection. They had live entertainment. There is an outside area to dine in. You can order pizza and have a seat near the brick oven so you can see them cooking while you are drinking your wine.

Little Gem downtown Janesville, didn’t even know it was there. By far the best place I’ve been in a long time. Felt like I was in New York or something. Our waitress Sasha was amazing! So polite and super fun 🤩 I definitely recommend this place to everyone! I am extremely picky when it comes to food and I gotta say absolutely fabulous!

I had one of the most delicious pizzas I have ever ate! Fresh ingredients, locally sourced. The flavor was like fireworks in your mouth! The staff and kitchen are always on the top of their game! You go there and find a friendly welcoming staff who make you like you should make reservations for your next visit because their that good!

Husband and I were trying to find a place (at 8pm) that was a little on the nicer side for a date night without breaking the bank. Searched all over the Rockford , Madison, Lake Geneva areas before deciding it was too late and we needed to just stay close, but wasn’t hopeful to find anything except supper clubs, bars or chains and thought I knew of everything here. Stumbled upon this place and thought we’d give it a try. So blown away, it was exactly what we were looking for. We ate outside with a river view and had the olives , pizza and tiramisu for dessert and honestly think it beats any of our favorite options in Madison. Staff were so nice and can’t complain at all about the bill. Absolutely our new favorite place and amazed it’s right here in Janesville.

Today was our first time at Genisa’s. We were greeted warmly and given the lowdown of how things operated with portions and sharing. Then, our waitress, Sasha, walked us through the menu and gave suggestions. She was absolutely amazing - funny, friendly, courteous, and super helpful. The food was AMAZING. From the meatballs to the gnocchi to the cobbler…it was an incredible experience.

me and my girls had went to the Mother's Day brunch this past weekend and after it all it gave me a bad taste in my mouth. The food was good. I'll give you that but the service was unacceptable . How we were treated was very unprofessional. Long story short we were there from 1145 til almost one. Yes I get it there was reservation that was made but no where on the emails that I received never said nothing about a time frame. Me and my girls were just having a great time and enjoying ourselves ordering drinks and eating and conversations. I noticed that we are two to three drinks in they had took our plates and refilling our water, constantly looking at our table, talking amongst themselves while looking at our table and taking our plate. When we wanted more drinks the waiter completely ignored me and quickly tried to book before I could place an order. There were people that were still there from the time I got the table that was still there and yet we were the ones that were rushed and service was ignored.

We were there to have a good time and catch up with some friends ordering drinks eating and talking. Our bill was over 200 because we had 4 people in our party and to get treated this way was pretty unprofessional! We were the only minorities and yet the other tables didn't get rushed but ours. It doesn't get better after that. We were upset about how we were so one of them reached out to the manager and her response was just overall very unprofessional. She didn't let her talk didn't even try to hear her out telling her that she needs to schedule an appt for a complaint. If you are running a business you take the time to listen, talk and find a solution not just put their concerns on the back burner.

I've been to Genisa quite a few times, and I've always had a great experience. The pizza is always spot-on, the drinks are tasty, and the staff is attentive and professional. So, this year we decided to break our normal Mother's Day tradition and try out the brunch. Once again, Genisa did not disappoint. The brunch offerings were diverse, delicious, and warm (not an easy feat for a brunch). Sasha, our fun and energetic server, was awesome! She made our experience even better, and I can't thank her enough for being so accommodating on this special day. Long story short: we have a new Mother's Day tradition. My girlfriends and I went to genisa for the Mother’s Day brunch. This was my fist time there. Our reservation was at 11:45. Food was good. After we ate we kept ordering drinks, so we were spending money. After about the 2nd or 3rd drink in, the waiter stopped asking if we wanted another one. Just kept topping off our water. We wanted to keep ordering drinks and no one was interested in asking us or offering more. We received the bill. Asked the hostess to see if we could get another round of drinks. She proceeds to tell us that there is another group that has been waiting for our table for over 20 minutes. Doesn’t politely ask us to move to the bar. She said if there is room at the bar we could go there. She was more preoccupied with getting the other table seated than to continue to wait on us properly. We decided to pay the bill but the waiter stood by and waited for us to pay, trying to rush us out. Our bill was over $200. I’m a downtown business owner and would never rush my clients out the door. I tried to go in and talk to the manager before writing a bad review. I did go in today, the hostess who rushed us out is the manager, and they were clearly not busy and she asked me to make an appointment to talk with her. I said I could wait a couple minutes for her. Expressed my concerns and how badly we were treated and rushed out of there. Proceeded to tell me that we had a time limit to be there. We left at 1pm at the latest, our reservation was at 11:45. No where did it state that the reservation had a time limit. Mind you, as I was trying to express my feelings and concerns she kept interrupting me with her apologies, barely letting me speak. She only used excuses as to why we had to be rushed and never acknowledged how we felt. Only kept repeating that she apologizes. I got no where with her in acknowledging how she treated us was wrong. We also were the only minority table there and were the only ones that seemed to be rushed out of there. No one deserves to be treated like this on Mother’s Day.

OK we were visiting friends and they took us here...I had very low expectations (we live in Austin). I was blown away by the wine selection and the lasagna was killer! The Caymas was a perfect wine to pair with the sharable meals we got. The atmosphere was so much fun we closed the place down. We will go back! Don't be fooled by the humdrum streetfront - inside lies a very contemporary interior and surprisingly good, modern Italian food. (Mushroom risotto in particular was amazing.) Complaints are nits by comparison - cocktails could use better ice, and service can be spotty (dirty forks get left behind between courses, waiter disappeared for 10 minutes at the end of the meal.) But overall, a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Got a wisconsin cheese pizza. The pizza had such a bad salt aftertaste that I could not get through one slice and neither could my finance. We got a gift card luckily from another local company. If it weren't for that I would ask for a refund. I would not get a pizza from there at all. Not sure if I will get anything else from there either.

This is my favorite restaurant in town. I love that they've added pasta to their menu to compliment the meatballs, I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite between the lasagna and brown butter gnocchi. My SO likes their pizzas and always orders the NY pepperoni pizza. All of the staff are super friendly, and the bartenders are quite knowledgeable. I'm looking forward to the weather warming up again to sit on the patio.

First time visit with a friend and we had an amazing experience. We tried the caprese, bruschetta, spaghetti, 3 different kinds of meatballs, and an apple cobbler. Everything was well prepared, arrived at the table without much wait, and everything was delicious.

Also a really great atmosphere. We sat at the bar that's in front of the chef and really enjoyed seeing things be made. The chef was very kind and happily answered any questions we had.

Genisa has surpassed Lark for me as Janesville's best restaurant thanks to the warmth of the service, the cozy atmosphere with so many thoughtful little details in the decor, and the amazing vegan meatballs (pictured) made with actual vegetables not tofu/soy! The tiramisu is one of the best I've ever had-- perfectly creamy, not soggy. Cleanliness is impeccable, you can watch your food being made, and staff is professional and clearly a well-managed team-- as a former longtime restaurant worker, this is a pleasure to see.

Wow. I read some of the reviews on here and I had to walk away, take some deep breaths and get back at writing this. I have to think some had much more going on in their life other than a day/night at Genisa. I absolutely love everything about the Genisa. The vibe, food and drinks are awesome and can be customized to some degree. All you have to do is ASK. The crew working at Genisa work hard to make every single visit an experience. You need something they are generally on it BEFORE you ask but know if you ask they will go to great lengths to make it happen. That being said, if you are a diva or a drama queen do not ruin the awesome vibe for the rest of us. Stay home. Again, it's an experience to be savored and shared. A community of people. The social vibe (inside or outside) has so many benefits. But, if you want to be alone in your experience tell them that and I'm certain they will make it happen. The views are amazing too!! Some people will never be happy no matter what you do or how you do it. It's clear some pleasure in writing a tunnel vision review. Go. Please go and tell them Teresa sent you. Had a wonderful time. I've wanted to stop by forever and yesterday was finally the day! From walking up to the stylish building to the friendly staff greeting us the second we walked it, everything was just as I wanted it. The atmosphere was laid back with a taste of swanky, the food was incredible... I loved it all. Garlic bread, citrus olives, rosemary mixed nuts, pizza, and the potato gnocchi... was wonderful start to finish. My wife and I decided to give this place a try. Initial impression was " looks nice in here". Waitress was very nice and friendly. Service was good. Ordered 2 pizza's and they were a decent size, 12 inches, enough to share. We both ordered the Margarita and it had very little to NO MOZZARELLA!!!! The crust was all sauce and hardly NO MOZZARELLA. They used 1/2 a mozzarella ball! The sauce was awful! Hard to describe the flavor, but my wife and I forced ourselves to eat it and not waste it! I have never, ever complained about brick oven pizza. In fact, it is my favorite type of pizza, but this was by far the worst in terms of flavor and lack of ingredients. Definitely, will not be returning.
