Very cool experience. Good food. Would come again. $10 for a spotted cow seems a little high considering it's made down the street. Other than that - 5 stars.

We were at the Glarner today during the chaos and fun that is Oktoberfest. We had the best service and food in a long time. Our server “Sarah” was amazing! She made my in-laws birthday an amazing time! 82 years young and they had a blast because of Sarah and staff. I will be back again and again! PS - New Glarus Pilsner is the gift of the gods! Thank you Dan and Deb!!!’

Severely overpriced German Restaurant I ordered the Geschnettzelets " Stube" $32.00 there was nothing tender about it, Tough veal slices mediocre wine, cream and mushrooms. the sides that I ordered were red cabbage and german potato salad. The red cabbage was overcooked and so hot it burned my mouth. The german potato salad was a big disappointment. Barely any bacon and water downed vinegar sauce. My husband ordered the bratwurst sandwich, very disappointed for the cost of a very overpriced brat. Had to wait forever to get water refill and check.
Sorry to see this restaurant go downhill.

We happened to be in the area, and stopped in not sure what to expect.
It was incredibly pleasant. Food was delicious. The cheese curds were massive, and so good.
Everyone we came into contact with was friendly. Next time we are in the area we will surely stop in again.

Service was good. Great bartender. Food was sub par. My wife’s Rueben had a weird taste and was grissly. The schnitzel also had weird taste and was oily and I don’t think it was pan fried in butter the way it should be for the price they charged. The Roesti was slightly burnt. Looked run down and the front bathroom was disgusting. If it wasn’t for the great bartender I would have given one star. Way overpriced. Won’t be going back

Need a more expansive European menu to include other schnitzel varieties. Roesti and prime rib was excellent . Didnt know "swiss vegetables" was just vegetables with Swiss cheese. Doubt you'd find that in Bern, Zurich, or Lucerne.

I’ve never been to Switzerland, but Glarner Stube in New Glarus makes me feel like I’ve stepped into a cozy Alpine village. The food is incredible—rich, comforting, and full of flavor. Our favorites are the Wiener Schnitzel and Roesti Swiss Fried Potatoes, but honestly, everything we’ve tried has been fantastic. Even their soups are memorable! It’s my son’s must-go place, and I completely understand why. We make a point to stop here every time we pass through Wisconsin—it’s become a tradition. The hospitality is just as memorable as the food—we always feel genuinely welcomed. It’s a popular spot, and sometimes there’s a wait, but it’s absolutely worth it. A true gem in a town that feels like a postcard.

Absolutely amazing hidden gem. Everything thing we ordered was fantastic. The service was great and I was amazed how all of our different dishes were all served piping hot. Nothing was left under a heat lamp or anything. I'll be making the hike to new Glarus more often just for this place. Great job

Enjoyed the giant pot of fondue. I had a most excellent schnitzel sandwich--it wasn't breaded, but fabulously tender and very well seasoned. I also enjoyed the roessti. Others in my party enjoyed their meals as well, however I do not remember what their dinners were called. Those who went with the chicken sandwiches were underwhelmed... they should've ordered the schnitzel. 😉

Glarner Stube is one of our favorite restaurants in the Madison area, and easily the best German food that we have been able to locate in the general area.
Only a short 15 minute wait for dinner on a Thursday evening. The food is always amazing - my fiance got her favorite, the weiner schnitzel, and I tried out their reuben. The weiner schnitzel is the best around, hands down. The reuben was excellent as well - though I should have gone for the schnitzel!
The server was great - though we never received any bread and butter. The weiner schnitzel on the menu stated you would, but it did not come with it. Just a minor issue, because we both got rosti and the food was far more than enough.
The restaurant portion is in the back of the bar, and it is quite nice - it probably could do with a deep cleaning at this point, but it was still very nice inside.
Definitely recommend if you want some amazing German food!

Overall experience was positive. The food was delicious! However, the service was slow considering it was not a full house during my visit. Additionally, the attire the serving staff wore was not appropriate for an establishment of this caliber. I observed servers wearing flip-flops, and disheveled t-shirts. One server was wearing leopard print-spandex shorts. This is what I would expect to see in a dive bar, not an establishment that brands itself as “fine dining”. So while the food was delicious, the atmosphere mirrored casual dining at best. I will return in the future solely because of the food. In the future, management should reevaluate their expectations of professional appearance for staff so that the establishment will live up to fine dining status.

NOT fine dining! The sign on the building said “fine dining.” I had higher hopes. Why in the world is a server running around in leopard print spandex with socks and sandals!? Casual sandals for the hostess as well. The bartender was wearing Birkenstocks and sandals. The staff looked like they were ready to run a little league concession stand. All were friendly, but not impressed. The customer next to me…blue and yellow toenails hanging out in the wild like he’s at a beer garden.
We waited 15 minutes at our table before our server greeted us. This was met with an apology, which I appreciated. The Swiss fondue…DELISH! But absolutely not $26 delicious for some melted Swiss with bread.
My prime rib was average. Quite fatty. The sauce had too much horseradish in it. The schnitzel was much better.
The red cabbage was divine! A perfect balance of sweet and sour.
The roesti was also delicious! You can’t get this anywhere else!
Overall, overpriced for a casual dining experience with mediocre service. I probably wouldn’t return.

My husband's pork schnitzel sandwich was flavorful and delicious. My Portobello sandwich was a huge letdown. The German-style potato salad was surprisingly sweet. There are a lot of reviews that talk about trying the röesti. I agree. It's a hash brown cake with cheese. I wasn't as impressed as my husband, but I think it's because I grew up with them and didn't know their food heritage. It doesn't come with any toppings, but we always ate them with sour cream or applesauce. I didn't ask about applesauce, but it waiter gave us plenty of sour cream upon request.

Glarner Stube menu proclaims, "Best wienerschnitzel this side of Alps". However, as compare to the similar cusines I have tasted in Osaka, Seoul, Chicago, LA, New York, etc. theirs Wiener is the very bottom of the totem pole in taste. The side dish of colesaw was the size of one mouthful, and not very tangy. We also had fondu. Fondu sauce was almost like condensed milk, and just a faint and almost no taste of cheese at all. It was porrest Fondu sauce I have ever tasted.
And, in addition they served Spotted Cow luke warm. Having tasted the beer at the New Glarus brewery tasting center, it was a poor comparison in presentation and taste. I don't know if their refrigerator was not set correctly, or broken. But, it was a bad experience in warm beer with poor tasting Wienerschnitzel at 35$. In Japan the Donkatsu is fried twice ot three times, as it was in Korea. If that is the best Wiener this side of Alps, I hate to taste whats on the other side.
I chalked this place as tourist trap. I will come back to buy more beer that I cannot get in Chicago. But, not this resurant. I would have much much more preferred hamburger from Culvers which is just down the street. At least Culvers never let me down like this place.

Meal starts with average bread service. I ordered pastetli with creamed sauerkraut. The latter very tasty, the main dish very flavorless. Underseasoned. Meats not tender. One companion ordered the Wienerschnitzel on a fish fry night and thought it was fried in the same oil. Definitely get the roesti with onions. You won't be able to finish at dinner but helluva breakfast treat.

Came here just to try roesti (essentially hash browns with swiss cheese in the middle) and enjoyed it but found it to be kind of bland. It was interesting to try though, and they served quite a large portion size. Overall, even though it was pretty busy and crowded, the bartender was kind and helpful but the food did take quite a while. Recommend stopping here to try the European specialties and beer selection while you're in town, just don’t think it was for me (as a vegetarian and not much of a beer drinker).

Amazing food prepared well from quality ingredients with huge portion sizes.
We had:
Pastetli - amazing!
Roetsi - amazing!
Pork Schnitzel sandwich - so smokey flavored, amazing!
The only thing that wasn't to my liking was the German potato salad. I've had quite a few of that style (in Germany...not the mayo/mustard/egg style) but did not like it.
Service was wonderful. Very friendly and attentive.
Prices are a touch steep but for the quality and portion sizes I don't think they are unreasonable.

This Swiss town was news to us! We were passing near so we picked this on right off for fondue.
And yep, right at noon on a Thursday, we had a fired up pot of cheese- fun right? We may have leftover fondue for a week, but it was entertaining.
Husband had an amazing looking meat and veg dish in a puff pastry. I had a wedge salad. Blue cheese was great of course. We had been up in the Dells for about a week and this was the best knew we had the whole time. Everything was fresh, well prepared, and flavorful.
Really good food and nice folks doing the things.
Apologize for not taking pictures before we dug into it lol.

Don’t get me wrong- I love coming to this restaurant. I’ve never been disappointed with a meal here. I used to frequent it often when living in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas. Now that I’m over six hours away, coming here is a stop while vacationing, not a day trip. So when my wife and I asked for a half order of their legendary cheese curds because the two of us wouldn’t be able to finish them and our entree, they refused. So we left what we couldn’t finish at the table. With this in mind, to the owners, please keep your distant customers in mind and offer half portions of the cheese curds, and perhaps some of your other favorites like Roesti. By the way, the meal was awesome and we will be making a stop here again next time we’re in the area.

I highly recommend this place for a real Swiss food experience. It's an older building with lots of wood. We loved the cheese fondue. Kettle and dishes all looked old fashioned. The wiener schnitzel was the best I've ever had. I definitely recommend the potatoes they're crispy fresh hash browns with Swiss cheese inside. I didn't have any cheese curds i saw them, and they looked big and amazing. The only downside is it's a small place and if it's full, it's kind of loud. My friend and I felt like old ladies, "What did you say? Can you repeat that?" 😆

A very enjoyable meal. Cheese curds were perfect, nice golden brown, gooey center, right out of the fryer. Portion size huge. Personally, I prefer a more flavorful beer batter, but this was pretty great all the same. The perch (Fri. Fish fry) was also perfectly fried, golden, and good fish flavor that was not overpowered by the batter. Red cabbage the best. What stole the show was the roesti, simple golden hash browns infused with Swiss cheese. The ambiance is old school WI. Tavern, unpretensious, warm, and worn, just nice and comfy. So why only 4 stars? Other than the roesti and red cabbage, which exceeded expectations, the entrées were on par with other good places I have eaten. (I've eaten around the world. Including Michelin stared establishments, so it kind of has to really wow me) So 4 stars is by no means a negative and gets my recommendation with no reservations whatsoever.

Came for lunch. The service staff were attentive and fast! There was a wait but we expected that. We got the fondue - the cheese itself was excellent. We also got the vegetables add on. that's where the food fell apart unfortunately. The vegetable add on was raw veggies: broccoli, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, and cucumber. The broccoli was fine but the rest was sort of inedible. I'd recommend switching those out for cubed roasted potatoes and turnips. That's what I remember from fondue in Switzerland (in addition to bread) and it's a lot better. Still a fun place to visit and highly recommend.

Place continues to go downhill. We were regulars and would happily wait hours for a table when Deb and Gary owned it. Have gone back a few times. Each time worse. Local beers are priced higher than anywhere else in town. Tonight at 6pm, you couldn't get a burger (first night of the week opened). We walked out. Place was fairly empty. Junk piled on booths upfront, where they used to seat people waiting for table. Don't bother. It's no where near what it used to be.

Younger bartender was absolutely amazing. Hostess was super nice. Found out the owner, John, was a childhood friend and he was busy working right alongside everyone else.
Cheese fondue is amazing

If you like German food you will love Gleaner Stube. The portions were massive and delicious. Everyone in our party was raving about the red cabbage.

Best steak dinner we have had in years! Great place to go, friendly service and incredible experience. Worth every cent we spent. I rarely thank the kitchen....but tonight I was compelled to stick my head in and thank them! The coolest part was the team approach and calling out the person who cooked the steaks to make sure he got the credit. Great job to all at the Glarner Stube.

Our family has been going to this restaurant for over 15 years. It used to be a real treat. Our last couple of visits have been lackluster but we keep holding out hope for a return to quality. Our visit yesterday may have been our last.
I'll start with the worst-- the food. They had no salads available. One waitress claimed the cooler was broken. The other waitress was telling people that they were getting ready for the holiday shutdown (which was 3 full days away). My wife ordered the bone in ribeye medium rare. It arrived cooked past well done. I ordered the tenderloin cooked to medium. It came out raw in the center and flash burned on the outside. You wonder why we did not complain to the management? Our waitress did not return to our table for 30 minutes after dropping the food off.
Backing up to our arrival-- the place was fairly empty so we paused to enjoy a drink at the bar. We ordered a couple of old fashioneds. The young lady behind the bar was clearly very new because she didn't know how to charge us. The drinks were terrible. I don't object to new people learning but apparently her trainer was off to the side allowing her to fail.
I'm not sure what happened at this formerly great restaurant. I hope they find the path back to quality soon.

Really enjoyed the quaint old world vibe. Food was excellent and very generous portions. I had the Geschnetzelets "stube style, roasting fried potatoes, and sauerkraut with onion sauce. I will definitely visit again and may become a regular!

I don't claim to be an expert on schnitzel, but today's schnitzel was better than any I've ever had before, anywhere... Austria, Switzerland, Germany... I've had it many places and today's was surprisingly the best (maybe I just don't know how to order it in those other countries? 🤣🤷♀️). Thoroughly enjoyed everything we ate and I'll definitely be back.

The food was very good. Service was good. Meal came in a very acceptable amount of time. The interior has a pub motif but needs some TLC and would have enjoyed some appropriate music for the venue instead of hard rock.

Our food and atmosphere were wonderful. Have been coming here for years but sorry to say our service overall was lousy. Our waitress was very short and rude at times and acted as though she really didn't want to be there. We asked her for separate checks but made some rude comment to us. Wasn't good about checking back with us. Not sure what her problem is but maybe she shouldn't be in a customer service oriented business.

One of the best pubs I've ever been to. If you love schnitzel, this is the place! Great selection of beer from the local brewery, plus all your premium favorites. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Steve the bartender is the best.

It was very busy. I gave only 4 stars because our server was running around like crazy. I think they were shortstaffed. They could have used 1 more person. I gave her a good tip because she was working so hard and was very cheerful. Tiny little place with a bar in front, dining room in the middle, and kitchen at the back. The bathroom is in the middle of the dining room, which is why it got 4 stars. But the building is so old, what are you going to do? Fortunately, they do not have a table by the bathroom, which is all you can do in a tight space like this. Great food! Will definitely go back. If you are in New Glarus, stop in and get the cheesy potato cake (Roesti). You will not be sorry!
