I visited the Great Dane recently with a friend and left very disappointed in the way we were treated. We each ordered two drinks and intended to order food as well, but no one ever came by to ask us about food or offer menus, even while other people around us received full service. When my friend ordered a glass of wine, our service abruptly stopped. For over 10 minutes we were left without water, communication or visits, without the option to order food, and without a check, while staff passed us and mingled without acknowledgment.

Eventually, when we finally were given the check, the bartender abruptly explained we would not be served further. I respect the right of any establishment to make that decision (we’re both bartenders so we understand), but the way it was handled felt dismissive and inconsistent. If a guest is being cut off, it should come with clear communication, prompt water and the option for food, and a check. Absolutely not silence or avoidance. After waiting, another bartender eventually brought us water, which I appreciated and tipped well for (Emili was amazing, $18 on a $35 drink tab), but the overall experience left us feeling ignored and singled out.

I’ve always believed that good service is as much about communication as it is about policy. In this case, the lack of clarity and attention made what should have been a casual visit uncomfortable. I hope management considers addressing how situations like this are handled so guests feel respected and cared for even when service is being limited.

Ok, I turned my one star review into a 3 because we went back without the dogs to try the beer. It’s great. But how condescending the hostess was to me when I said I had dogs for the patio and there are literally statues of dogs in the establishment made my pups very disappointed. Market better.

NO DOGS ON PATIO!!!

First off, we arrived today and there were no hostesses in the front. We then made our way to the bar with our whole family and a dog where we tried to find seating that was appropriate for a high chair. We were told that we could only sit near the bar (high tops only) with the bartender observing that we had a dog with us. Once it went through all the rigmarole and got seated we were able to order drinks. Still having a dog with us. By the way, if you Google dog friendly restaurants, this restaurant in particular shows up in the Google search. Once my dad got a beer with his dog next to him we were then confronted by someone who I thought was like a manager or somebody who told us we could not have a dog out on their patio. This is terrible service. If you're going to be open, have some hostesses and have better service. And tell us you don't allow dogs before letting us order things???????

Came in about a week ago and everything was fine. Normally I wouldn’t leave a review over one rude worker…. but really do not find myself wanting to return. All employees were nice but seemed busy. Again no big deal. My daughter used to be a server and I understand how it is. The manager, an older blond woman, spoke to my husband and I in a very condescending tone and told us the wait time in a rude way. We were willing to wait, I don’t appreciate being talked down to as a paying customer. This was not stress it was rudeness. The host, another older blonde woman with curly hair, was respectful and friendly. Server was a latino man. Also nice. Food was good. Yet I would not return due to the blatant disrespect shown to a paying customer. I would recommend the food, not the management. Training needed

We had a party of 5 and were sat immediately on a Thursday evening around 5:30. Our server Amanda was very friendly and upbeat and knew a lot about the menu and answered all of our questions and gave suggestions when asked. The food came out quickly and the drinks were strong. I ordered the Bavarian pretzel and it was enough to share with the table for an appetizer and the Korean rice bowl for my entre was the perfect amount of food - not to small and not to big!

So I went here on October 18th and someone working here stole my credit card number. This is a card I literally never use but for some reason I pulled it out and used it here. Surprise surprise when I went to pay the bill this month a $250 charge for ebay on the same day. This was on a card I haven't used in 6 months... Honestly it's shocking and I wasn't sure whether to review or not since this is likely reflective of one person and not the whole restaurant. But I decided to finally write something because it was bothering me so much.

I'm strictly giving this review due to how they dealt with guests on thanksgiving.

We were at a different restaurant, they were unable to accommodate our family so I had called here asking about walk in availability. Said I can be there with in 15 minutes said that they had ample amount of seating designated for walk ins. The lady I had talked to said they had ample openings for walk ins. Okay great! We made it there in the time frame we said we'd be there. Once we got there we were told that there was only room at high tops and the upper balcony go look around. No guidance no organization. So we went up to the balcony found a place and then told that was a reservation table. The high tops were strictly the bar. Total mess. There wasnt any places for waiting. The wait staff was so disorganized. There were ample tables not being used but anyone waiting weren't allowed to use. No apology, no clarity. We had asked to be put on a wait list multiple times and never were. The could and should have moved out the pool tables to make more table space to accommodate their guests.
Will not be going back to this location. We will only go to the hill dale location.

We attended a birthday gathering in the upper level of Great Dane Fitchburg. We ordered food and drinks from the bar on the lower level. Food was good and drinks were good. Service delivered our food upstairs. We tipped the server over 25%. The next day when we checked our credit card- we were charged OVER DOUBLE, what our bill was. I entered a dispute with our credit card and included a copy of our receipt. Just was notified by our credit card that the dispute was denied and we are responsible. I placed a call to the credit card company and they are going to follow up. This is not acceptable to be overcharged in this manner! some people don’t check their accounts and receipts.

I have been eating the Mediterranean Bowl at this restaurant for awhile and sometime in the last year or so they stopped putting any noticeable amount of herbs in the falafel! Now each falafel is a flavorless hunk of chickpea mash. There should be some green herbs in here guys! So sad- this used to be such a good dish.
Also, the fish fry sits in its own grease so that the skin gets all mushy.. you can do better, Dane.

This review is for a private room for a rehearsal dinner. The reservation was for 40 adults & 17 children. The Great Dane did not provide enough seating for the requested number so I had to obtain chairs to use from the restaurant as guests were arriving. When everyone was seated I asked who was going to open up the buffet? A waitress out in the main restaurant area said, "You do." That seemed unusual, so I had to open up all the serving dishes. What was most aggravating is they did not have enough plates, silverware or bowls for the soup. The food would run out so not only was I going to the main restaurant to beg for dinnerware, I also had to monitor all the food & go ask for refills. I paid extra to have the cake served but as you can imagine I had to help serve it and use soup spoons for them to eat the cake. We bought a certain amount of drink tickets to use but we were unable to use all of them because it took too long to receive a beverage. The Great Dane charges extra if you are not out immediately at the end of the reserved time.

Whenever we are in Madison, we make an effort to hit up the Great Dane. We have been away for a while, so we were really looking forward to grabbing a bite there again. Unfortunately, the quality of the food has plummeted, with an exponential price increase. We had two kids meals and two of the Jamie's tacos. They overcharged us for cheese and charged us for mayo without even telling us condiments would be extra. All burgers should come with condiments included. Otherwise it is just mere beef slapped between two brioche buns for $8! Our fish tacos was nothing to rave about either. There was more batter than actual tilapia fish. I also ordered a stout that was served lukewarm at best. In short, overpriced Denny's food (maybe Applebee's). Our total was near $100! Very disappointed and will no longer be visiting the "Great" Dane.

UPDATE: I was contacted by the manager. I really appreciated his kindness and understanding. It's safe to say that the team at Great Dane (Fitchburg) continue to provide great service!

Chicken Caesar Wrap: 8.9 outta 10. Add some tiny croutons to this and boy do we have a high nine.

Poutine: This was our first time trying it, bars set pretty high. 7.4/10

Wisco Mac and Cheese: Doesn’t blow your socks off but doesn’t disappoint mom either. 6.9/10

Chimichurri Ranch Steak Salad: We took this to go, but we all agreed that if eaten right away, this has got some giddy up. Even cold, 8.1/10.

My 6 year old daughter has celiac and we were pleased to find they have a gluten free menu. However they do have a shared fryer so she was unable to have fries which she was disappointed with but we have come to find this in most places. She really liked the cheeseburger and the GF bun. We did have an issue though when her food came out it had fries on the plate. The waiter said we could just remove them and we had to push him that we needed them to make her a new burger because she has a gluten allergy and can’t have any gluten touching her food. I was not happy he didn’t even apologize or admit that anything wrong occurred and then it took another 20 minutes to get her new burger which we were almost done with our food at that time. She was supposed to get applesauce with it as well but he never brought that either. Food was good, service with this particular waiter however was not good. We will be back but if we happened to have the same waiter we will be requesting a new one.

I'm normally a fan of the Great Dane. It's one of our neighborhood restaurants. We ordered out often during Covid and happy to be back when it opened back up. My favorite salad has been the Chimichurri Ranch Steak Salad. I've been eating this salad since before Covid. It's a pretty consistent dish and the light green chimichurri ranch dressing makes that salad really good. Tonight we ordered to go and the dressing I received was not a salad dressing. It was a beige color with flecks of what appeared to be seafood. We called but were basically told that was the right dressing and we were wrong. Drove back to the restaurant and the response was arguably worse. They insisted the dressing was the same as always. It's not the same color, texture, flavors. It was like a dip and lumpy - and has flaked seafood or some kind of meat. And when my husband pointed out the seafood/meat, they stated maybe something fell into it. What? Maybe? Something is in your "dressing" that you don't recognize and doesn't belong there and that's the response?
While they gave us our money back for the salad, my bigger concern is the lack of concern, care or ownership over whatever that was. I've eaten that salad easily more than 30 times over many years. There is no doubt that wasn't normal and it wasn't any kind of ranch dressing. Trying to tell me that's it's normal when it isn't - don't do that to your customers. But again, the worst part - I can't imagine a restaurant team being okay with a mystery ingredient in their food. It could be a serious health risk to someone depending on what "fell in".

I’m not the one to make racist/prejudice accusations but my boyfriend went in to order take out where he was directed to the bar area. He stood for minutes waiting to order while they ignored him like he wasn’t there, eye contact and all. They humiliated him! He did not feel welcomed at all as a customer and he’s latino btw. Picked up Thanksgiving dinner from here to-go, really appreciate they were offering this and for a reasonable price. The food was delicious and definitely tasted homemade, which was just so nice when my husband and I did not have the time or energy to cook a full meal during a busy work week. So, thank you for providing food for those of us without a big family and still felt like we had a nice holiday meal.

I will say the pickup was a bit confusing since there was a sign on the to-go table to not touch the orders, but there was no one there to help anyone. When someone finally did appear he told me to just take my order and go, so I felt like I wasted a good amount of time just waiting around for no reason.

Great Service, Great Atmosphere, came with a group of 14 last night and the food was just not good however, atleast 10 of of weren't happy with food we ordered- pork tacos were very dry, southwest tortillini (highly recommended by server) was soggy and flavorless- fish fry batter was soggy and way too thick. Sweet Potato fries were great. Overall would not recommend,especially at an average of $16-$18 a plate. We used to love coming here but unfortunately the quality has dropped substantially. I understand 1-2 people maybe not loving the food but when the table was unanimosly unhappy with their meal it's disappointing, expecially after a $400 bill.

We had a great visit when we stopped by for an early dinner before a UW volleyball match. Both of our bowls - a Mexican Rice Bowl with Braised Brisket and a High Point Harvest Bowl
with Blackened Chicken - were terrific. Staffing was pretty minimal because we arrived at 4pm on a weekday but Manuel, who acted as both our server and bartender, was great (very helpful and friendly).

I haven't eaten in at this location before. But I did a pickup order today while at work. The front desk staff were very friendly and grab my order in mere seconds.

I had the Old Glory cheese curds which definitely are top 10 of cheese curds. The beer cheese and potato soup had way too many potatoes in it for my opinion but was still extremely tasty.

Had the chicken chipotle quesadillas. Excellent flavor. They held up really well being a pickup order and walking 5 minutes. The rice and beans were spot on.

The only vegan menu option is the harvest bowl. Thankfully, it is delicious! I truly appreciate it when the chef will make this dish for lunch (brunch) as it is exclusively on the dinner menu.

The food was okay but the service was terrible. It took around 40 minutes to get our appetizer and we haven’t even ordered yet. The appetizer (nachos) was cold and the cheese was hard by the time it got to us. I would not recommend sitting for an hour for mediocre food.

We were seated promptly in a booth. I ordered an IPA. The beer was cold and went down easy.
We ordered tacos, which came with the usual beans and rice. The beans were served warm. The rice was dry and crispy, not in a good way. Tacos came with double corn tortilla shells and they were delicious

Came back for a second visit, the first time was over 10 years ago as I'm from out of town. Lovely place and just as good as I remember. The brews are all delicious, we ordered two flights (four in each one) to share and loved all of them. Had the nachos for an appetizer which were great, the chips were even good! Then ordered dinner and dessert. Everything was delicious and we all took home leftovers.

Ive never been to one of these restaurants before and my first time going was a let down. I’ll give them credit where it’s due. We got seated right away and our server was very nice and friendly. When we ordered our food it wasnt very busy but it took about a half hour and when we got our food it was semi warm. I ordered the pub tacos and if I’m paying 14$ I better be getting more than 2 tacos. Pretty let down by this place.

Cheese curds were easily the worst I’ve had in the area. That hard bland overly thick style a couple of places had. But the actual curds seemed bad too.

We loved the atmosphere! We don't eat out much anymore so getting a cozy booth by the wall of windows made us feel special. The lighting in the dining area coupled with all the windows makes it look fancy. The food was great. The Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich was a good size. I thought the breading would have a bit more crunch, but it was still good. Very accommodating to our 3 kids.

Food is solid but they make everything difficult. Called in a to go order and they refuse to take the order and tell me to go online. I ask if they can take it over the phone since I am driving. They decline. Get to restaurant and it’s a 25 min wait for food with a dog in the car in the winter. Frustrating at best.

Came in a little after 2 on a Sunday and there was a fair amount of diners there. Seemed like a good sign for a Sunday afternoon. Server was quick and courteous which was the only redeeming quality. The poutine was sort of a letdown and was very basic. Not much flavor. The fact that the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich came out about 5 minutes after ordering should have been a big red flag. This was clearly not prepared fresh and was leftover from the lunch rush. It was rubbery and so tough you couldn't even eat with a fork and knife. They fortunately took it off the bill without fuss but for the hype of this place, this was definitely a poor experience. Maybe come when they are busy and have food being prepared fresh but don't come during the off hours.

Five of us went for Thanksgiving Buffet. The buffet was very disappointing. We had to ask for gravy, Mac and cheese, butter, ice cream, napkins, whip cream. The carving station was out of ham and steak. Your opinion was pork. The buffet room was not kept clean with food all over the tables. No drinks were included in the already high price of $30 a person. The most I saw the server was after asking for a bill and they stood by waiting for a tip.
