Definitely not authentic but more of a Thai Madison infusion. We went on a Wednesday for dinner there were lots and lots of people there and the service staff handled it flawlessly.

Food and service was okay but the chubby host with curly hair and chains on her glasses was unbearable! Her attitude was terrible, she couldn't even properly print a receipt right AND they tried sneaking in a tip without properly displaying it which is against consumer protection laws. I don't know if the last part is exclusively on her or the new management but I definitely will not be going back.

I want to like this place as so many people have recommended it. I had a bad experience before they closed for remodel and heard it was under new management so I gave it another try. Both me and my husband ordered different curries at medium heat. They were both super watered down and lacked flavor. I lookes for put waitor to ask for soy sauce to add sone flavor but they never checked in us. We were also very disappointed that there is absolutely no decor or ambiance at all. Just beige walls and nothing else. They were closed forever for remodel and reopen with no art or decor at all? Not going back

I’ve eaten here many times over the years, both dine-in and takeout, and everything has always been excellent. I especially recommend the duck dishes—the duck curry, in particular, is among the best you’ll find in the area. The recent renovation did change the vibe, shifting from a cozy vintage charm to a more modern, streamlined feel that comes across a bit “box store.” Even so, it’s still a clean, inviting space with great food and service, and definitely a spot worth visiting.

Still the best Crab Rangoon in the city….
But will never be back to dine in - soooooo basic. They got rid of so much seating for the bar *which is so unnecessary* the raise in price is definitely for the cost of those ridiculous gold silverware? The fork is so thick and heavy it wouldn’t pick anything up, no sauces out on the table anymore .My pad lad nar tasted nothing like it used to, over cooked chicken and half the portion. For double the price.
I knew this dragged on opening would be a disappointment, but damn. Way to kill the vibes of a neighbor staple.

I guess the service professionalism went down after they upgraded the environment, and they don’t have the energy or ability to train their employees properly. I went in during Sunday afternoon around 3pm, it was not that busy and nobody came to my table for 5min. Also the owner can be pretty passive aggressive after I calmly pointed out that nobody seemed to be responsible for my table, and she unapologetically suggested that I can choose another restaurant.

The food was really good. There were a few dishes that were able to be made vegan.
Even though we ordered everything HOT, it tasted more between mild and medium so that was a bit of a bummer but the food was very good.
The curry puffs and the drunken noodle were dreamy delicious. Thanks to all the staff for helping us have a great night!

Gai Yang w/ Papaya Salad and Pad Kra Pao are two classic and popular dishes in Thai cuisine. Unfortunately, their food presentation and flavors were all wrong. My Gai Yang was literally sliced up chicken breast that came with no dipping sauce and the Papaya salad was overdosed lime and fish sauce. The Pad Kra Pao was even more disastrous. It was served with thin sliced pork stir fry style in a thick gooey sauce. We questioned the dish and the server claimed it was "Chinese" Pad Kra Pao. The attached pictures speaks for themselves. We requested spicy and nothing was spicy, and all other dishes we sampled, e.g., Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, Drunken Noodles were all bland. Overall, service was good, but that doesn't justify the prices and food quality. Sad to say I won't be coming back again.

If you want authentic SE asian food I suggest go elsewhere. Waiters were nice, crab wontons were good. I ordered the pad kra pao (very popular and basic thai dish). What I got was not even close to Padkrapao. I understand everyone probably has their own fusion recipes. Regardless, the dish was pretty bland. Was not what I was expecting. Wished there was a picture on the menu. I just wanted to share to give folks heads up.

Came from out of town with some friends excited to see the new renovations.. but ended up disappointed. Ordered the spicy wontons , wasn’t even a hit of spice. Got a spoonful of soy sauce and sweetness , ordered a few more different dishes ended up tasting the same. No such thing as Chinese version of pad kra pao and was told differently. Bunch of veggies mixed in the same sauce and thinly slice pork. Do better next time ! Server didn’t know what dish was what as well. Bought 3 dishes cost me $60! Overpriced for something a 12 year old can make. Beef was dry even after asking for medium rare and got served cold hot and sour soup. Highly don’t recommend

I feel sorry for the college kids that think they're dining at an authentic Viet Asian restaurant. The prices are high, but loading up dishes with potato and green beans is inappropriate. Perhaps it's a Laotian think to glut your meal with potato, but every Viet restaurant I've eaten at in 40 years always had plentiful stir fry Asian vegetables, and not a large boiled potato cut into massive chunks to make the dish look plentiful. The curry was excellent, but it was covering green beans and potato, and I feel ripped off. Add 9$ for a glass of house Pinot Noir, and I won't go back there again.

The food wasn’t quite what I expected. I don’t remember the exact name of the fried noodles, but they weren’t great—the sauce just felt mixed in with the noodles, meat, and veggies rather than really stir-fried. The chicken satay was pretty average too. The best dish we had was the rice noodles. We waited for 15-20mins for a table for three. Food was served pretty quickly tho. Overall, wouldn’t recommend.

The spring roll with pork egg roll was phenomenal. Incredible flavor, super fresh, and just different. Sweet, fresh, and savory all in one. The Thit Bo Nuong (R3) was SO good. Reminded me of being back in Vietnam. I got the fried chicken wontongs to go! I can only imagine they will be even better. The lychee lemonade with fresh lychee was top tier. And Sam Y, my server at the bar, was busting his butt while staying attentive to my needs. 10/10 would recommend. Oh, all of that was also only $40 before tip.

This place is incredible. We didn't know we should have made reservations so we had to wait but it was so worth it! Besides, the street theater that is Willy St. made the time go by.😄 Our benchmark meal is Tom kha soup...so 3 of us ordered it with different proteins and spiciness levels. They were all delicious. One of our party ordered chicken satay and they said it was very good. We will be definitely be back to order more from this place!!!
Even though it was packed in the restaurant it didn't feel crowded. Also the noise level was comfortable and you could have a conversation with your table and have it not feel overwhelming. The staff was very accommodating and nice.

Once a culinary gem, this restaurant in Madison was arguably one of the finest Asian dining establishments in the Midwest. It exuded the charm of a hidden gem, boasting vibrant energy, exceptional service, and the lively atmosphere of a cherished local diner. Regrettably, my favorite restaurant in Madison has been transformed into a mere shadow of its former self, retaining only the name as a faint vestige of its past. The new management has stripped the restaurant of its unique character, leaving it devoid of any distinct identity. The food, prepared in a manner reminiscent of fast food, maintains consistency but lacks depth and flavor. The airport-lounge design, employed to enhance the ambiance, has resulted in a sterile and impersonal space, akin to the interior of a Skims commercial. The restaurant has lost its emotional resonance and character, leaving patrons with a sense of disappointment.
In reference to my initial visit to the new establishment, I must express my disappointment, despite my longstanding patronage of the original location during my undergraduate years. I accompanied a friend, and we both ordered dishes that deviated from our usual vegetarian preferences. While I opted for a Tom Kha with Tofu and Red Curry Fried Rice to limit my meat intake, my friend chose a banh mi with beef. Additionally, I intended to order a tofu banh mi for my girlfriend at home.
Given that both my girlfriend and I adhere to a vegetarian diet, particularly my girlfriend, I had high expectations for the culinary offerings at Ha Long, which has historically been a haven for vegetarians seeking delectable and seasoned dishes. However, our recent experience was a stark contrast to these expectations.
During our takeout order, we were shocked to discover that the vegetarian dishes contained various meats, including pork in the tofu banh mi. This oversight resulted in incorrect orders, causing significant disappointment and frustration. Despite receiving a refund, the quality of the food was unacceptable.
It appears that the new ownership of Ha Long (old owners of Little Palace) may be relying on the profitability of alcoholic beverages to compensate for the subpar quality of their new menu. While the dishes may not have undergone significant changes, it is evident that the new employees have compromised the standards of service and food quality.
On my subsequent visit, I opted to dine inside. Unfortunately, the new ownership appears to be prioritizing the profit margins of alcoholic beverages over the quality of their food. The pad see ew lacked depth and flavor, and the curries had become bland. The service was also lacking, with a 25-minute wait time for our seats.
While the wait time was expected at the original location, the overall lack of organization was evident. Despite my reluctance to write a lengthy and negative review, I am deeply saddened to see such a cherished Willy St organization decline to its current state.

Their renovation was wildly over-hyped, unless you’re a fan of beige-on-beige-on-beige décor passed off as modern chic. The menu is just as beige, serving up dishes as bland and uninspired as the décor, a reminder that in today’s world, shallow style trumps substance.

I heard so much about this restaurant and I wanted to try it out for the longest time. But it was a disappointment. I ordered pho; it wasn’t that flavorful and there were only 3 pieces of meat in it. My mother ordered panang curry and it was full of potatoes - barely chicken in it. Also, the waiter who took care of us was very unfriendly as well as the others except the lady with reddish hair with glasses. She was the only one who had a smile on her face; the rest of the team looked extremely miserable. It was my first and last time there.

Pho tends to be sweeter than I like in Wisconsin, but I really liked theirs! But, despite being mid afternoon, the service was slow and it was very loud - not a shred of fabric to damper sound in the place, I think - so I'm not sure I'd ever want to go during a busy time.

SUPER DISSAPOINTING experiences at Ha Long Bay these days. For so long, I have truly loved going to get food from Ha Long Bay; it’s been a staple to meet up with my family, my friends, and it used to be such a cozy spot to be with loved ones. After a family member’s funeral we even met up there for a nice meal a couple years back.
In recent years, a lot of changes have been made, and I can tell that things have been running differently – and not for the better.
Servers/bartender/managers often openly discuss how stressed out they are and dumping a lot of information on their hardships regarding work and their bosses – it really just seems like a negative vibe and overall not a positive place anymore (both for employees and customers) and it’s hard to enjoy what used to be a really positive and cozy place, when now the energy is super negative and hostile. I get that changes in management and maybe different staff members cycling in and out can be stressful, but a lot has changed and I don’t see this as a great place to dine anymore.
On a visual level, I really despise the decor. The recent remodel completely lacks culture and the cozy energy it once had. Now it is just too bland, monochromatic, and honestly symbolic for how so many great cultural spots are losing their roots to a boring gentrified monochromatic look. Super disappointing as well. This also was a recent change and I’m wondering if this is due to new management? Either way, it really makes the restaurant lose the charm it once had and lose its appeal.
I’m looking for new Asian restaurants that have authentic food, charm, and a positive environment. If anybody reads this review and is a Madison resident – please feel free to comment any suggestions, as Ha Long Bay is just not a good choice for me anymore.

Was quite excited to check out Ha Long Bay after its rebranding and unfortunately only left with disappointment (I gave it a shot twice). Pho broth was bland; it seemed like their recipe called for not a lot of fat skimming as there was an excess amount of grease/oil from the beef bones sitting on top, and the meatballs did not taste good. The pad Thai was severely undercooked - multiple noodle strands that were still hard. Even though it’s the same recipes and chef, the rebranding screams nothing about bringing authentic Vietnamese/Thai/Asian cuisine to the city of Madison and instead caters towards American taste (even the interior design does as well). And because of that, I will not be returning.

Hạ Long Bay Restaurant is a true gem for anyone craving authentic and flavorful Southeast Asian cuisine. The environment inside is calm, peaceful, and has an earthy, relaxed vibe that makes you feel instantly at ease. It's a great spot whether you're dining solo, on a date, or with friends.
The food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend the yellow curry — rich, creamy, and perfectly spiced — and the beef pho, which had a deep, savory broth and tender slices of beef. You can tell they put care into every dish.
If you're looking for a warm, welcoming place with standout flavors and a serene atmosphere, Hạ Long Bay won’t disappoint.

I've gone to Ha Long Bay many times but this is my first time going since their reopening and I would argue the food, atmosphere and service is the best it's been in the time I've been patronizing this establishment.
The menu itself has not changed with their letter-number item identification system (to alleviate pronunciation issues). They offer a wide selection of Thai dishes from soups, stir frys, curries, egg noodles, rice noodles, protein plates and more.
They changed their spice system from a scale of 1-5 to a 1-10 (1 being mild/no spice). On their menu it is still listed as mild, medium, hot, extra hot. This spice scale is westernized. I have a western-medium spice tolerance where I enjoy spice that enhances the dish's flavors but doesn't render it inedible. I did a medium and it was honestly very mild.
I ordered the squash curry with chicken and it was phenomenal. Though the medium spice level was more mild than I expected, the flavors of the dish were prominent and enjoyable. The chicken was tender and savory. The ratio of vegetables and protein was well-balanced.
One of my complaints from previous visits prior to the renovations was the service- it historically was inconsistent. However, they have drastically improved their service. Our server checked on us frequently and our food came in an appropriate amount of time.
The decor is modern with a gold and white color scheme. It's a fantastic upgrade from their previous style.
One thing that hasn't changed is the wait time. This restaurant is still a Madison staple and on the weekends expect wait times between 30-60 minutes (depending on party size). Despite the wait time, the food makes it worth the wait.
Willy street parking is difficult but is free. Expect to walk a few blocks in most cases when finding street parking.
The restaurant is wheelchair accessible.

If you don't have a hearing impairment when you walk into this restaurant, you surely will have one by the time you depart. The NIOSH sound meter on my phone consistently registered peak noise at 85db. The combination of hard surfaces, boisterous patrons, and no sound-proofing make for an unmitigated assault on the senses.
The food was basically OK. The Tom Yum soup had plenty of shrimp, but the broth was much too sweet. The Panang Curry was flavorable, but was stuffed full of potatoes (way too many of them). I ordered the Pad Kra Prow at a spice level of hot, and after a consultation with our server, designed to prove that I was serious, the dish I received was just short of a blazing fire. I had no grounds for complaint about that, however; I got what I asked for.
Our server, Will, has received accolades in many reviews. He was excellent. When he first appeared at our table, he mentioned that a party of six had just been seated, and that he would try to get our order in quickly to avoid a long wait. He succeeded, and his attentiveness and hospitable manner were much appreciated.
As often seems to happen in Asian restaurants, our entrées arrived before we had eaten much of our soup. Perhaps a request to pace the dishes appropriately would help.
Ha Long Bay has a full bar, with reasonable prices for drinks. Food prices are quite moderate; our meal for two (with drinks) came to $62 before tip.

this was one of my favorite restaurants in madison for many years, returned for the first time after the remodeling and was shocked by how much both the food quality and prices had changed. the duck was dry, and the pho (which is now up to $17 for a regular bowl) had a murky, bland, and slightly sour broth with none of the aromatic flavors that it used to. even the meatballs are different and have a mealy gritty texture. not sure if the ownership changed or something but it's really a shame.

Ordered take out for dinner and was sadly disappointed with the whole experience. The Musaman and Squash Curry both came in plastic containers . While the Squash Curry container was full, the Musaman was only about 3/4 full. We also ordered Drunken Noodles and Peanut Chicken. Both came in cardboard boxes that equaled the volume of the plastic containers, but both were barely half full. The cardboard also seemed to soak up most of the sauce in the food as both had very little base sauce. It really seemed like we were getting someone’s leftovers! The worst part of this experience is that none of the food tasted very good, and was definitely not the delicious food we were used to getting from Ha Long Bay! Can’t recommend them anymore and will not go back👎

My partner been here before and he said it's bad 👎 I asked him to go try again due to being under a new management.
When we first came in it said 20-30mins wait which it's fine for us but that 20-30mins turn into an hour.
We got sat about 7pm and the vibe we got off of our server was she's didn't want to be there. We ordered our appetizers which came out pretty good but then our entree was just bad and worst. My meal was salty and when I raised a concern i was told that that's how they make it and I'll be charge if I change my order to something else - I mentioned it's my first time here so I didn't know how things were. (At this time I was speaking to a new server cause our server disappeared and never visited us again) the new server was great (I'll give her 5/5) after mentioning that I was new here she said she'll tall to the manager to wave the charge. After getting a new dish (salt&pepper squid) the squid was just too breaded and not enough seasoning. Instead of complaining again, we just took it home.
Best thing: thai green tea
Surprisingly good: pho me&you drink
Good: egg roll
Okay: soup
Bad: drunkin noodle & salt & pepper squid
Service was 1/5 for the original server & 5/5 for the new one
Vibe: dull, bland, no color, sad
Advice: turn on the A/C - we were sweating inside.

Overall I'm glad that they finally reopened however there are some things that do need work. We had no problems being seated having made reservations (which I highly recommend) but there was a noticeable delay (15 min) before our server appeared. Her service was attentive but watching others arriving after us being served before us was a little off-putting. I had the Lao suasage which was was good but should really come with a knife as I ended cutting it with a spoon and fork. My wife had pho which was not warm enough to seperate the noodles which remained bunched together. The interior renovation struck me as sterile and I would describe as would be urban hipster. I miss the Southeast Asian decor which added character and ambience. As mentioned before our server was attentive and seemed genuinely interested in how we were doing but the staff around her seemed disorganized. I'm not giving up on this place which has been a personal favorite for years but hope that they take these and other comments to heart.

The acoustics in the restaurant are a nightmare! I couldn’t hear my dinner companion. I couldn’t hear the waiter. The waiter couldn’t hear me and neither could the hostess. I requested the spice level extra hot, it was served mild. I asked the hostess how much longer the wait time was, she looked at her watch and told me what time it was. There’s no possible way to enjoy a conversation with your dinner companion here. The only person that smiled was the bartender. The hostess didn’t smile at us or anyone when they came into the restaurant. The waiter didn’t smile once the entire time he was serving us. All of the staff looked stressed and that’s no surprise given the fact that the sound was continuously ricocheting off of the bare walls. The air conditioning needed to be turned up, that should’ve been a no-brainer. The bathroom door felt like it had a 50 pound weight attached to it. You shouldn’t have to be a power lifter to use the restroom. The green curry was a joke, It had the consistency of water! Dessert wasn’t offered. I felt sick the entire time I was there, like my brain had been put in a blender (because of the noise). I love Thai food, and I was really looking forward to trying this place for the first time. It was a bad experience all the way around, extremely disappointing. Other reviews state that this place is warm, cozy and cute. I found it to be the exact opposite, sterile, boring with no aesthetic appeal. The equivalent of a dental office.
PS please find some appropriate workwear for your staff. Unless I’m at Hooters and you are a Hooters girl, I don’t expect to see the wait staff’s bare legs with oodles of cellulite while I’m eating. It’s gross and un appetizing.

Just kidding, everyone is welcome to their opinions but our experience has been the opposite, it's still fantastic. Don't @ me.

Menu is large. Too large. Seems like a quantity over quality affair here. Food was just alright and definitely not the most authentic. Service and atmosphere was good though (although a little cramped inside). My wife’s pho was honestly gross… who puts nutmeg in pho?? (a LOT too).

We waited about an hour to be seated, which is pretty typical — it’s always busy whenever we visit. Be sure to make a reservation in advance to avoid the long wait.
Holong Bay is a small, cozy, and cute spot in Madison, Wisconsin. Despite its size, it has a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The food is delicious and definitely worth the visit. We tried the Tom Yum soup, chicken dumplings, basil fried rice, Pad Thai, and iced Thai tea — everything was flavorful and well-prepared.
Highly recommend this place if you're craving Thai or Vietnamese cuisine. A must-visit in Madison!

With a heavy heart I have to throw out this not so great review after the reopening of a neighborhood favorite.
I have to say, I had some concerns during the soft opening. The hype guys out front enticing people to partake were completely lacking in customer service skills and had no clue when the place would open or about much of anything, information often conflicting with one another at any given time.
Food: Sadly, there has been a significant reduction in both quantity and quality. One of my favorite dishes, the Pad See Ew has become absolutely inedible. Gummy and dry, overly salty and much less in the new container, the disappointment here is extreme. I wanted to believe this was a one off, maybe a new cook learning the ropes, but alas, a friend had the same experience about a week after I ordered this. Mediocre Sesame Chicken was lacking the application of the sesame seeds this entree is known for. Pad Thai was dry and just.. nothing special. I encourage the staff to go and order this from Viet Hoa. Spring Rolls are what u would expect from any food cart with Thai in the name.
Staff: The staff are nice, but lack warmth. I have much respect for those working in this industry, often juggling many things at once, including needy customers.
Atmosphere: the charming, overdone asian restaraunt vibes have been completely revamped, now feeling more like a sterile cocktail bar on the square.
As a regular from the hood, i'm really hoping time will be kind here as staff hones their edge and works on fixing what isn't working.

Mariana at Ha Long Bay was an excellent server and hostess — warm, attentive, and made our family dinner feel special. We were headed out of town and met family here for a break from the usual Wisconsin fried fare, and it was absolutely worth it. The food was fantastic and the service top-notch. Having lived in Southeast Asia for a decade and grown up in Seattle, I’m not easily impressed when it comes to Asian cuisine — but Ha Long Bay exceeded expectations. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town!

Will was our waiter and he was awesome. Tbh I would come back bc he was cool. The food in my opinion wasn’t the best, the noodles are thicker which makes the dish doughy and hard to enjoy personally.

I have LOVED Ha Long Bay for years and could not wait to go back after they re-opened, but I was severely disappointed. The food was delicious as always (though the portions seemed smaller), but the atmosphere lacks the original charm and character. I’m hoping they haven’t fully completed decorating since they recently opened. It is also incredibly noisy to the point where you can’t hear your group without shouting. It didn’t help that there was construction happening below us.
However the main thing that compelled me to write a review was the service. Our server was, quite frankly, rude from the moment we sat down. He made aggressive comments and gestures if someone took more than a second to order, slammed our food and other items on the table, and didn’t ask us once how our food was or if we needed anything after we got our food (we tried to flag him a couple times and it seemed he was ignoring us). I’m used to waiting awhile at this restaurant, but we waited at least 20 minutes between our appetizer and entrees and once we finished eating, we sat for over 30 minutes without touching our food before we got boxes (and another 15 after that to get the check).
All that being said, I’m not done with Ha Long Bay and will definitely be back in ~6 months to give it another shot!! We’ve had great experiences with the staff in the past.

The long awaited return of Ha Long Bay was... in short, not good. Our server showed up within 30 seconds (not exaggerating) asking if we were ready to order. When we asked for a few more minutes, it was dismissed in almost a huff. The food took forever to come out, and when it did, the flavor was less than exciting. Many of our favorite dishes lacked the pop they used to have in flavor from before the extended closure. Additionally, nothing was at all hot or spicy when asked for any heat. I ordered a dish hot, and I've had sweet salsa from the grocery store with more kick than that "hot" level spice of curry I was served...
Our dinner was aggressively interrupted from sounds and vibrations of construction below us. I believe they may be working on a basement remodel but to have incredibly noisy and disruptive work being done during dinner rush hour is quite crazy. Our entire table was vibrating to the thump thump thump of hammering right underneath our feet.
The worst of it was our server. Never once did our server come by to check on us. We tried, multiple times, to ask as he walked by, for more rice for the table, but he intentionally put his head down to ignore us. Following this, it took over 30 minutes to get to go boxes (we asked another floor staff member for them) befofe we finally received them. We also, at that time, asked for the check as we had been waiting over 30 minutes to try and leave, but we're constantly ignored with the same head down approach. We finally got our to go boxes, but still no check. Our server then came by, again with no check, and started to aggressively clear our table. And I do mean aggressively, with anger and frustration. It was uncomfortable, to say the least.
Finally one of our table members got up to walk to the front to ask for our bills to be able to leave (it had been another 15 minutes since asking for them at this point and almost 45 minutes since we were done eating). Our server tracked her down and demanded she must go back to our table. Finally, after this confrontation from him he finally brought our checks and we sent off our cards to be ran right away (though he didn't want to take our cards and wanted to drop the checks and go).
I'm know this was one server in the sea of staff, but it's important to say that this was, quite honestly, the worst dining experience I have ever had in my life. That comes from someone who previously considered Ha Long Bay to be my favorite restaurant. I hope these issues are addressed in the future.

Critic review: The new modern aesthetic of Ha Long Bay gives a breath of fresh air for the beloved restaurant by all Madison people. However, with that shift, it also loses its authentic flavor and fails to understand its Thai and Viet heritage.
Generic review: I asked for all of my food to be extra hot and they were all too sweet with little to no spice. Also, my pad thai noodles were undercooked. I've eaten hundreds of pad thai noodle dishes. They've never been undercooked.

It was our first time at Ha Long Bay last night with another couple since their re-opening and it was just as amazing as we remember it. The renovation is gorgeous and even includes a bar. The place settings are beautiful and the food was incredible. Their prices have not changed either which is an added bonus. Also, we were very happy that they are serving the lychee-tinis from Little Palace as well.
However, I wanted to write this review to highlight our incredible server, Will. We ordered 4 drinks, 1 appetizer and 4 entrees which all came out promptly regardless of the very busy night they were having. Will went above and beyond and told us when our dishes would be ready, made recommendations for our meals and was incredibly personable when he discovered we were celebrating an anniversary and job promotion. He made the extra effort to bring me chili oil with my food in case the spice level was not enough for me and surprised us with a mango sticky rice for our celebration. He even made sure to split up our leftovers correctly, truly going above and beyond. I could tell that he enjoyed being a server and loved Ha Long Bay as much as we do. We didn't think we could love HLB more than we already do but after our amazing experience and service from Will, it got even better. So happy to finally dine in after HLB's long awaited return.

Food was mid (it was mid before the ownership change). Curry fried rice had no curry flavor and included what appeared to be a very well done omelette. Usually the egg is chopped or at least scrambled into the rice. Completely different dish than before. Also, they still haven’t fixed the ventilation. I’m in an office after lunch and I smell like an oily kitchen so please do not eat here if you have to go anywhere else because you will reek.

Service was totally adequate, right up until we got the check. I paid with cash, and when our server returned with my change, I realized that the bills I received were not adequate for providing him with a 20% tip. The next time he walked by our table, I asked him if I could get two 10's for the 20 he gave me. His reaction was to not say anything, but instead, roll his eyes and push out an agitated huff. When he returned, he tossed the bills on the table and said "I only have fives", then scurried away.
Ha Long Bay is a Madison institution, and we were so excited to return after hearing that they were open again. I certainly have a level of empathy for a restaurant team that is working through the hiccups of reopening after a long restoration period, but this exchange completely disrupted the other 95% of our experience, which was mostly positive and delicious.

Unfortunately things have changed a lot at this restaurant. Just ordered drunken noodles to go and it was in a cardboard box not even halfway full whereas the portion used to fill up a plate in the restaurant such that I needed to take to go box. And the price went up. Not to mention I ordered extra vegetables with my Pho And all they did was give me another bag of basil and beans where in the past they would actually add vegetables to the order. Looks like another Madison institution went south. Bummer. I'm sure you can find another restaurant in town better than this.

This is the first time I have eaten here since 2020, and I was disappointed. We ordered crab wontons and those were tasty and so was the Thai Iced Tea. We ordered four entrees, the Pad Thai with chicken and Pad Lao with pork were good. We also ordered Squash Curry with tofu, and that was flavorful but had very overcooked tofu and minimal squash and only one sprig of basil. We also ordered Pad See Ew with tofu, and probably should’ve sent this dish back to the kitchen—the tofu was so overcooked that it was crunchy and hard to chew and the egg was very unappetizing. I didn’t send it back because our waiter never came back to ask us how our food was. We waited a really long time for our food to arrive. The hostess made a point of telling us that our food would be out shortly after tables around us, who were seated 20-30 minutes after us, were getting their food. We were seated at the front of the building and we noticed that our waiter also had tables in the back of the building—and I think this was the reason why our waiter never visited our table after he delivered our entrees until the very end to wrap up leftovers and give us our check.

I had the pleasure of dining at Hạ Long Bay Restaurant during their soft opening, and I was seriously impressed! Despite how busy it was, the service was fast, attentive, and friendly—something you don’t always see in a brand-new spot.
We tried a variety of dishes, including the pho, pad Thai, and curry chicken fried rice, and everything came out hot, fresh, and flavorful. Each dish had a distinct taste and was clearly made with care. The drinks were another highlight—delicious and strong, definitely not watered down like some places.
If this is how good they are on opening weekend, I can’t wait to see what’s to come. Highly recommend checking it out!

I’ve been going here every time I visit my little brother. The food has always been amazing and I just had to leave a review after their latest renovation and reopening. The food is still as amazing as it was before. I got the musaman curry, Thai iced tea, and the sticky rice with mango and each dish was full of flavor. The staff were all kind and accommodating, and were always checking in to make sure our meal was going well. Even the new owner stopped by to make sure everything was good. I do miss the old decor a bit, but the new style has its own charm. My favorite thing about the update is that my jacket and clothes don’t smell like food afterwards anymore! All in all everyone should head on back for the same amazing experience Ha Long Bay has always offered!

I am sure this early into reopening isn't representative of what they will do, that said I was really disappointed with our experience tonight.
The service we received was disorganized. We watched our drinks delute on the corner of the bar for a while. We had to flag someone down to bring them to us. A table of 9 that was seated after us was served before us. Maybe they lost our ticket? They informed us that it had been cooked 3 times and sent to the wrong place... which i find unlikely to be true, and not reassuring even if it is. The wait staff was hard to get ahold of. One of the employees stood between the host stand and the seating area for most of the time we were there... is he an ill placed bouncer?
When the food arrived, it wasn't to the standard that I remember from a few years back. The textures and seasonings were off. One arrived overly salty, the other arrived bland.
The door to the women's restroom is hard to open... to the point where it may be an accessibility concern. I am not sure how it would go for someone with limited mobility or a lifting restriction.
On the petty side:
The redesign seems performatively monochromatic - for me it lacked the charm the restaurant used to have.
The crockery didn't make sense. The water pitchers were hard to pour without spilling when they were full. I have no idea what the wavy plate set out in the beginning was for.
I wish I had received chop sticks rather than a fork and spoon. If not chop sticks a knife would have been nice. The food was hard to eat with the tools I had.

A friend and I were given a comped meal as part of a re-opening giveaway - I wasn't asked to give a review but am giving one anyway.
Atmosphere:
The new renovations look great. The space is a lot brighter than the pre-renovation look. There's a big area for folks to gather for pick up orders or waiting to be seated. There's also now a bar + seating left of the main entrance. The new glassware and silverware are super cute!
We ordered the following:
Apps:
- crab meat wantons
- veggie curry puffs
Main:
- red curry w chicken
- crispy large rice noodles w tofu
Dessert:
- blueberry rangoon for dessert
Honestly if there was a change of recipe in any of these, I couldn't tell the difference - and I mean this in a positive way. Absolutely everything was delicious. The portions are great, too - as was always the case, I usually have enough leftovers to make another meal out of it for the next day, so the prices always seem reasonable to me.
Drinks:
I got the lychee-tini and my friend got a thai green tea and we both really enjoyed them! There wasn't a drink menu provided so we just asked our server what was on available.
Service:
For our table service was pretty good! I'm sure the server was new to the restaurant and so I always give a little grace for needing to repeat orders and what not. The folks at the table next to us (also were getting a comped meal) had to wait a bit for their order, even though we came in after them. So the new waitstaff is still figuring out their groove, but that's to be expected!
All and all HLB remains one of my favorite spots in Madison and I'm looking forward to continuing my visits as they embark on this new chapter of the restaurant!

I was disappointed at the soft opening.
I was delighted to have run into to soft opening. I was sad by the time I left.
It was a carry out menu. I had visions of taking my delightful meal to the park. In my excitment missed the details on the pad was take and heat at home. The vegi spring rolls where small and they for got to give me the peanut sauce upgrade I had paid for. When I got the noodles home I headed them gentaly and they where dry and less than appealing.
Over all for the price I will be hesitant to go back.
Plus there was no discreet way for me to give feed back. At a soft opening it should be about learning.
This made it over all feel like a money grab rather than away to grow and make the service better.

The food is great, but be careful as a lot of Thai food uses things like oyster sauce, etc, and isn't considered meat or an animal to Thai culture. If you are vegitarian or vegan, make sure to do your due diligence and ask before hand, very clearly.
My biggest complaint is the fact that they refuse to serve people who carry firearms within their establishment, this has caused me to often not dine in or order from them over the years.
I don't understand why someone who will follow the laws "rules" of the land is punished in this manner, but they do so here and thus I often opt for other establishments instead of partaking in meals with this family. "This is a family owned and operated establishment, which I usually seek out to be a patron and often will pay higher prices to help sustain their livelihood."
