First time here. To be honest, when I pulled up to the building, I wasn't sure if it was open or not. But they had a sandwich board out front, and I saw someone else go in.

Once inside there's a cheerful counter with some plants, pictures and knick-knacks. It looks a lot like a bar, and they do serve cocktails there. The bar/barista area has several tables for small groups. There is a larger area towards the rear, and that can hold many more people. You can also sit at the bar, with outlets for electronics. To me, it seemed a bit on the dark side. But I am used to coffee shops with large front windows.

Got a friendly greeting by one of the staff, Amy who was helpful with my order. I wanted my usual London Fog Tea Latte (little lavender, little vanilla, extra foam), but she gave me the bad news that they didn't have those flavors, but suggested honey instead. Hey, I'm up for a new experience. I had also asked to have it in a mug. And although they didn't have one there, they tracked one down (in the bosses office), crisis averted. The scones looked good, so I ordered a White Chocolate Cranberry.

After a little while they brought my tea out in a small tray. With a spoon and small glass for the used tea bag. I appreciate that luxury. Both the tea latte and the scone were excellent. The honey (instead of lavender & vanilla) had a subtle sweetness. The scone was actually a scone, and not a muffin in disquise. I learned that they make the bakery on-site. The place has a chill vibe, it was very quiet, and a good spot for casual conversations.

It's an unusual looking coffee shop. Once you adjust to the layout and the lighting, it has a nice feel. Great service by both Zac and Amy. And both items that I got were excellent. Would definitely return.

Always impeccable vibes. I truly feel like Hawthrone is the quintessential Wisconsin coffee place. Their oat milk lattee is a slam dunk every. Single. Time. I bring folks from out of town here and delight in coming here frequently with my family or solo. This place offers a little bit of everything esp when they have a food truck. Home town bar/coffee house goals here, my dudes.

Picture is from when I got some homies to indulge in the magic of the Oat Milk Lattees

The place has more of a country barn vibe than a rustic coffee shop and the main hall is pretty dark. The expanded area is brighter, with a rustic, still under construction kinda feel.

It’s not a cute, hip, photo friendly place. It is, however, a friendly, neighborhood coffee shop with great coffee. Their whiskey barrel cold brew is top notch and hubby always gets their pour overs.

The expanded area is not cute but large with plenty of space to space out and have conversations with friends or to put on earbuds and zone out.

This place is pretending to be inclusive yet has no clue… Worst customer service I have ever experienced in Milwaukee. I simply wanted a breakfast snack and some coffee with my friends and only got served narcissism, complete with an attempt at gaslighting. Don’t eat here! All they have is cookies and muffins, coffee was slow as duck so I asked for my money back and took it to Dunkin’.

Great place to sit back and have a couple schlitz. Also a good place to read..if you don’t have a book their book collection is filled with some good non fiction and sci-fi. Come here at least once a week. Baristas are welcoming and fun.

The pictures that are shown for this location is 4 years old, which I didn’t notice until ai walked inside. It looks more like a bar than a coffeehouse. I had the cold brew and my son had their shops featured bourbon cold brew. We were definitely disappointed in our drinks. The coffee was not tasty and my son said it was terrible.

This coffee shop is close to the airport and I needed to work on a few work things hoping to find a quiet area nearby.

I came across this coffee shop which had a ton of space but on top of it, amazing coffee! Found out it was an old bowling alley and they definitely are making use of the space. Surprised it was not more busy for a mid morning Monday. Good spot and good people!

There is nothing more that I would like as to have this coffee house survive as there is no others in the neighborhood. That being said, please clean the space up. The ceiling tiles were falling out. The back room is just full of stuff. I know its primarily a roaster but the atmosphere is not compelling to visit. If they just cleaned it up a bit and maybe lightened the decor.... gave it a paint job, because it looks dingy. Maybe get some fun sofas and make the place inviting. The coffee and service was good though... so I did enjoy that.

I just had a very unfortunate experience where lack of quality control caused for risk of serious health consequences. The sausage on my sausage, egg and cheese muffin was raw. RAW. I had about 3 bites before I realized it and I’m so grossed out, and worried about getting a parasite from eating raw pork. The americano was also WAY too strong to choke down. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this place. The staff were very friendly and professional though.

In response to the owners response this morning: it was definitely raw pork sausage, there’s a difference between cooked and raw. Maybe it was a fluke, but I’d recommend better inspection of whomever is ‘cooking’ the sausage. If I was a part of the department of health and I came across what I ordered this morning, I would report it and shut down the restaurant til it was fixed.

Easily among the best coffee in Milwaukee, right up there with the likes of Anodyne, Pilcrow, Vendetta, etc. It doesn't look like much but they clearly know what they're doing, and they have a ridiculous amount of space inside.

Very highly recommended. It's a hidden gem.

★ 2

It was much better when there was a kitchen going. Not sure what happened but it's a good place to switch up the pace and the atmosphere is good. Music really varies and I've enjoyed all they play. The missing food menu and things like taped over prices (unlisted) make the experience feel like the customer is an afterthought. Coffee is good.

Update again.

This place was 5 star for me then they dropped food went down to 3 and now they have to go cups instead of real cups and I don't like the plastic waste so I will likely just be going to a different coffee shop. <> There is nothing that is special about the coffee nor the atmosphere. Go here if it's closer and easier but they aren't better nor faster nor do they have interesting options. Just run of the mill small coffee shop. I recommend Anodyne over hawthorne at the moment. Better lattes consistently. Admittedly bummed this place peaked for us.

The coffee is amazing. 5/5.

They used to have these awesome sandwiches. Now there's just a cooler with cold premade ones. Odd choice they went so well with a coffee shop. Now there's Bloody Marys which makes no sense to me. I would expect espresso martini to maybe be an alcoholic offering but seeing posts from a coffee shop to come on down for a bloody is the last thing I expected. It's such a chill classy joint with great coffee. Make it make sense bring back the awesome food and bloodys don't go with coffee it's a weird thing to see advertised imo!

I miss the made to order breakfast sandwiches and now that they're trying to rebrand as a bloody mary trivia bar, it feels like the focus is no longer on coffee. On a Saturday morning it takes noticeably longer to get a couple of lattes when the baristas are busy making bloody marys. Absolutely delicious coffee, however.

If you come here knowing what to expect, and are willing to embrace the quirks, you’ll love it. It’s an old bowling alley, the restrooms remind me of my old elementary school, and it can be kind of musty. But they take great care to make the perfect pour over, have bourbon barrel aged coffee beans and delicious cold brew, and my favorite - a Cold (Brew) Fashioned, which tastes remarkably like an old fashioned cocktail but is a coffee drink, so good.

The best part of waking up, is Hawthorne Coffee Roasters’ Espresso & Tonic, in your cup. ™

The Espresso Tonic is a humble beverage with a simple build and a sophisticated depth of flavor that made it’s debut in Oslo around 2007 and shortly thereafter took the Espress-o-train across the ol’ pond sometime in the mid 2010’s.

I discovered this drink, if memory serves, at some bougie coffee shop in Austin ~ 4-5 years ago and started trying them everywhere I saw them on the menu. (Even requesting them sometimes when I didn’t see them on the menu, like I learned from my mother).

I’ve even tried making my own, but they never quite compare to @hawthornecoffee ‘s combination of tonic + bitters + espresso + orange peel + love that makes theirs the best in all the land. What you see in photo 1 there is my favorite coffee drink in Milwaukee, and with a price point of $5.50, it won’t break the bank.

I guess I should also mention that they also have a fresh daily assortment of baked goods that always include a few scones and muffins. Photo 2 shows their “Bourbon Old Fashioned” muffin that Madda loves.

If you have the time, try one of their breakfast sandwiches, make sure you get them to toast it up and add a side of the pimento-ish cheese dip/ spread that is in their cooler, trust me on this one. Their other sandwiches are good too, but usually I’m in the mood for some breakfast.

*They get slammed on the weekends and can take a while to pump things out, so get there early if you’re in a hurry or come on a weekday and cruise right on through.

The interior leaves a bit to be desired, but as you know we love stuff on the walls. I’m ok if they just keep focusing on their products and leave the frilly decor to me.

A hipster wannabe, this location was left stuck somewhere between a 1920s speakeasy and a 2016 coffee startup. Featuring one machine capable of roasting coffee and pressing espresso but lacking the steamed milk accessory, their menu is restricted to plain coffee with featured add-ons such as simple syrup, honey, and sugar. That's it. That's their entire menu plus a few in house scones and cookies with a daily lunch special. They do what they do mid. And they don't do much.

Was my first time here, the music and atmosphere were amazing! The Barista was very helpful.

I tried a dirty chai with oatmilk.

I was expecting the same ole same ole. Yet from the first sip it was wonderful!

I tasted more chai than milk which is the way you are supposed to taste it.

The shop itself is inviting. Its dark like a bar when you enter, yet there is an wide and bright open area in the back. You choose by mood or who you are with.

I will be back!

No photos as I just dived into my drink. Next time.

Really cool coffee shop. Fast yet busy. Plenty of workers to get the job done. First time there and surely not my last. Great great brew with two shots on the side. Old bowling alley and really unique setup. Highly recommend. Will be back!!

Update from 2 years ago, best coffee in MKE, we live in Menomonee falls and make the trek to Hawthorne at least 2 Saturdays a month. 15 miles isn’t that crazy of a trek but There are a lot of coffee shops in between, however, nothing really compares to Hawthorne. I always leave with 2 cups of coffee and a growler. Still loving it, the people and the vibe!!

Wow, went last weekend and came back for more coffee beans and bottle of the bourbon barrel aged cold brew. I can’t say enough good about the coffee as well as the owner and staff. We will be back for more coffee and to try the food

Definitely a top three Milwaukee coffee shop. Can’t go wrong here. They’re always consistent and delicious. They do pour overs which is always a bonus.

Was doing a job in the area and was needing my morning cup of decaf coffee. Need to drink decaf because I can't handle the caffeine. Looked on my phone for coffee places near me and Hawthorne popped up.
Kind of a cool atmosphere and the people were pretty friendly.
Ordered a 16 oz decaf and they told me that they don't serve decaf coffee!!!😮
Actually thought she was joking at first but she was not.🤔
I love my coffee and as a contractor driving around a lot I've been to just about every coffee shop in the Milwaukee county area including coffee shops up north and other states and never have I been to a coffee shop that doesn't serve decaf coffee. It would be like going to Kentucky fried Chicken and they only serve white meat, no dark meat....Or going to a gas station and the only serve regular gas not unleaded 😂
I never asked why but I should have..... All I know is that is really strange 🤪

Steve and Kendra run an amazing coffee shop on the city’s south side. I’ve been a frequent customer for many years and have always enjoyed their offerings and conversation. Highly recommend “The Hawthorne” which is a shot of espresso, a pour over, and a cold brew (get the barrel aged version).

Loved the cold brew and great outdoor dog friendly seating. They can deliver your drinks to you on the patio if you can’t go inside when bringing a dog.

My favorite coffee in Milwaukee. Coffee and cocktails on the south side of Milwaukee in a former bowling alley. The Bourbon Barrel aged Cold Brew is a must.

I stop here at most once or twice a week, and it took the regular staff maybe 3-4 visits before remembering my name and order. The great coffee is just a cherry on top to the overall environment.

Kind and knowledgeable staff. Coffee is roasted on site and tastes like specialty coffee should. I asked for a recommendation, and it was exactly what I like!

Only option is pour over if you want regular drip coffee, and the baristas did a great job with it. That’s probably my favorite part of this cafe. “Slow bar” is a risky thing to do in the coffee world, but everyone gets a fresh, hand-poured cup of coffee. It’s worth the wait.

Atmosphere was vintage cool, and again, the baristas were warm and friendly. So, that made the vibe even better.

I’ll go back when I’m looking for a good space to enjoy a great cup of coffee. The 2 hr limit on the WiFi will prevent me from coming to work from there though.
