Heritage Tavern is one of Madison’s true gems. If you’re staying downtown, it’s an easy walk and absolutely worth the stop. The space is gorgeous, stylish, and the attentional to detail is impeccable.
The food is outstanding and clearly rooted in a thoughtful farm-to-table approach. Every dish we ordered was beautifully presented, and carefully crafted by Dan and his team. The cocktails were balanced and creative, and the service was friendly and professional throughout the night.
Our group had a fantastic time, and everyone left impressed so much that we came back for brunch the next day. Heritage Tavern is a perfect spot for both a casual night out and a celebratory dinner. Highly recommend!

Have been here before but ended up here by happenstance. Thank goodness. It was a delectable shelter from the storm. It was approaching closing time but the service was superb. Matt the bartender was attentive and welcoming. The food was over the top good. They care and it shows. All around stellar. Mm

Incredible cocktails, food was great, but above all, our server Lilly H went above and beyond & made our dining experience such a great night out. She was attentive, kind, gave great suggestions and was so accommodating for dietary restrictions at our table. She provided such in detail options for how & what to modify.

Heritage Tavern in Madison is a standout spot, especially if you're staying downtown - super easy to get to. The design of the place is beautiful and creates a great atmosphere. The farm-to-table food was fantastic, and the drinks were on point. We had a great time as a group and would definitely recommend it.

Had an amazing dinner, everything was outstanding. Server Emma was knowledgeable, fun and attentive. Schnitzel, steak and mushroom pappardelle were fabulous, and Emma recommended a great bottle of wine. Looking forward to our next visit.

While food and service were exceptional, it is the manager that I am commenting about. I thought I had a Resy reservation for 5:15 on Saturday after football game. When the five of us arrived, the hostess could find no evidence of a reservation. Max, manager, found no reservation but tied himself in knots to accommodate us. We sat at the corner of the bar, enjoyed great service, excellent food and great relief at not having been turned away without another good option.

Wow, wow, wow, wow….. 10/10
From beginning to end this was such an amazing experience. My fiancée and I are here for work for a few months and this has been the best meal we have had in Madison thus far.
From our drinks to dessert everything was well balanced and quite literally perfection, no notes to give.
We ordered the baby octopus, guanciale wrapped halibut, schnitzel and the cardamom cake.
For drinks the clarified punch and 2 glasses of wine. This is on the more pricier side for food in Madison, but well worth it. An absolute MUST coming from a chef herself, hats off to the exec chef and the staff here. What an absolute delight noise level was perfect, atmosphere was perfect, service was perfect. Will be coming back again!! Also one of the best dessert menus I’ve seen in Madison at the moment. Very thoughtful and creative, reads well!! Again place that reservation or walk-in like we did and experience for yourself!

The food, service and atmosphere was a 5 star experience.
The special that day was a corn soup that was blended to perfection. The salad with its fresh greens, vegetables and house dressing balanced the tastes. Not overdone just the right amount added to bring out the flavors. I didn't order desert however many people did at the table and the presentation, taste were highly talked about.

eritage Tavern – 4.5/5
I came in with high expectations, and for the most part Heritage delivered. Service was impeccable from start to finish. I started with the deviled eggs three ways—two were creative and memorable, one was forgettable, but overall a fun opener.
The peppercorn steak was the star. Perfectly cooked, with layers of flavors and textures that made every bite interesting. Paired it with a Merlot, after starting with a Hefeweizen, and both matched well with the flow of the meal.
The ambience inside is truly great—small, warm, and full of unique antique touches that give the restaurant real character. It feels special without being overdone.
This is a 4.5/5 experience, but since I came in expecting excellence, I’ll call it a 4/5 here. Either way, it’s an easy recommendation if you want refined food, great service, and an atmosphere that adds to the whole experience.

The staff is exceptionally well trained. The food was wonderful for the meat eaters a little light for vegetarians but there was an option that was good though a little on the small side for portions. If you like cocktails their selection is great, even the cocktail was superb.

What a wonderful evening out. We were able to enjoy their summer restaurant week menu. The staff were incredible with their knowledge of the menu, attentiveness and friendly service. The food was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious! We enjoyed a few specialty drinks…the complexity and depth of flavors were off the charts…everything from drinks through dessert was wonderful! I would strongly recommend! And dont miss out on their fun drinks and scrumptious dessert

My faith in Madison brunches has been restored. :) After a few off experiences, I was ready to have a different outcome. My Cocktail- solid. I had the market vegetable omelet, along with the Starzy toast with some compote jam. As a person who doesn’t eat meat, I loved that the vegetarian options contain vegetables not usually found in omelets. They’re also not used as an afterthought like other places. (My salad had both their house dressing, carrots, and watermelon radishes). The omelet was piping hot, hash browns perfectly seared. All in all, a place absolutely worth the price and an easy endorsement for Madison’s food scene.

Its the consistency of the experience and lovely cozy interior that makes this place. Food is little above average, but cocktails are well made. Brunch can be great, but dishes are pretty big - hard to finish unless you have a huge appetite or been fasting for 2 days! Perfect spot for happy hours, dates, and cozy dinners. Service is generally good and courteous. During summer they put out a few tables, which is really nice. If you are driving there is plenty of ramps and street parking around it. Even tho I am not an egg fan; they make the best deviled eggs in town; fantastic variety and presentation - super cute! Enjoy!

Heritage Tavern offers a rustic-chic atmosphere with exposed brick walls and a cozy, intimate setting. I had the pan-seared duck breast—tender, flavorful, and complemented by a rich cherry glaze. The menu features locally sourced ingredients, and the craft cocktails are expertly mixed. Service was attentive, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxed yet refined dining experience. It's a great spot for a special night out or a romantic dinner.

My sister and I were seated outside and enjoyed our food but the service could've been better. As a server myself, Im kinda disappointed. She walked away without asking if we were ready, for about 5 minutes; there's only a few items to choose from. Seemed like she was scared to be a server lol. When it came to the bill she just assumed it was separate, didn't check on us, and just rushed a goodbye. It was frustrating because there was 3/4 tables total in the restaurant.. lol

Heritage is one of the best restaurants in Madison. Their food has been good every time I’ve come in, and their drinks have been stepping up. They had some specials for a BBQ week recently that were INCREDIBLE. I think it was called This And Yap - might be one of the best drinks I’ve ever had…

Something wonderfully warm and welcoming about this place. The space itself is a nice step back in time and the wood (mahogany I guess?) gives it a nice feeling to gobble anything there. Their Nitro Willy will make you come alive, it's like a tequila based espresso martini.
The cinnamon roll with ham is amazing. That, with coffee now would be breakfast, but no. We also ordered shrimp with grits and lamb French toast and Suri served us right and also fixed our wobbly table, which by the way would not have gotten in the way of eating all the deliciousness. Great vibes too!
Please go! Enjoy.

Truly one of the best places to eat. We’ve been several time but BBQ week blew us out of the water. Coming from the south I’m always skeptical about Midwest BBQ but the Heritage BBQ week specials were spectacular. The platter comes with so much great food. Meat was great and so was the Mac and cheese with chili crisp oil.
Another highlight were the drinks. We tried two of the BBQ week drinks—That’s the Tea & This and Yap—perfectly balanced drinks with great flavor—so fun and different!
I also had the Almost a Lassi drink from the main menu and that was fantastic. One of the best drinks I’ve had in years.
I’ve been many times and I will certainly come back.

I went here for the first time for a birthday dinner and was honestly stunned at how great the food was. The menu leaves your tastebuds watering with their perfect descriptions of their options. Our table ordered the deviled eggs as an appetizer and it was a hit! I have never had such fancy deviled eggs before. Visually impeccable 👌 The entrees were also amazing. The special that evening was Red Snapper (meant for two) and was also a hit! Service was fast and friendly. Such a unique cozy atmosphere. Heritage Tavern is one of the Midwest's most extraordinary restaurants. Owner and Chef Daniel Fox is well-known nationally in the culinary world, but for us in Madison he's just someone who, growing up, didn't listen when his mother told him not to play with his food. So he plays with it, and he comes up with creative recipes that are the pinnacle of delicious without being weird or intimidating. The menu is top-notch without being over the top, and the service is just as good as the food. Try the deviled eggs, the schnitzel, the cod; oh, just try everything. You'll be glad you did, you'll be back with friends, and those friends will like you more for having taken them to Heritage Tavern.

We had the best time there. We went for our anniversary and we arrived like 15 minutes early. I gave the hostess my name, and the first thing she said was welcome and happy anniversary, then sat us. As we began to sit, i had my white coat on and asked a waitress if there was a coat check . Yes, I'll come back and get your coat. Second later, another waitress asks if she could take my coat. i told her the other waitress is coming to get it. I knew then the service was going to be exceptional. Our waitress was amazing and the food was great. We did the French BBQ, and it was good. The ribs could have been better. I don't blame the French for not being able to BBQ, lol. I can't wait to go back there and try the rest of the menu

Great surprise in downtown Madison. We ordered many great dishes, including the peppercorn steak and short rib (fantastic combination) as well as a special of the day that consisted of a duck and lamb dish. The depth and complexity of flavors were unmatched in our adventures around Madison. Heirloom carrots, wine sauces, wild mushrooms, potatoes, pinto beans and many other fresh and deliciously cooked ingredients that created beautiful and full flavors in your mouth. We will definitely be returning and have found a new favorite next to the Capitol.

I wasn’t impressed with the food. I was excited to try the deviled eggs, but they were just salty and lacked flavor, which was disappointing, especially at over $3 per HALF egg. The pork schnitzel had a strong, distinct scent and flavor that didn’t work for me either. The dishes also took 45 minutes to arrive.

Hearty farm to table food at a reasonable price. Great tavern atmosphere that got loud and lively after 7pm. While the menu is tilted towards pork and charcuterie there are plenty of vegetarian options. Menu was very seasonal, so we
Loved that.
Portions were huge, in my opinion, for the price. (Compared to hometown Portland, ME)
We split the bouillabaisse and a salad and it still seemed like the portions were large. Big wine list. Did not try cocktails but they looked creative and colorful. This spot will certainly be on the list when we return to Madison.

We had a stellar experience tonight from start to finish. Every bite was delicious and we had excellent recommendations from our server Emma. We ordered the fill charcuterie board, three deviled eggs, the strip loin and halibut entrees (on the recommendation of Emma). Home runs from start to finish! We also ordered the affogato dessert which was delightful and just enough to put a bow on the meal. We have visited in the past and look forward to returning in the future as well! The food was great but our service was awful. The bartender had a terrible attitude and made sure we knew that she was not happy that we called her out on the two errors she made with my drink. We asked if the error drink was going to be thrown out and if it was could keep it as others at the table liked it the way it was made. We were told that the drink would be tossed and the waitress left it at the table. Interestingly, we were charged for the drink.......
And why don't they just charge you one charge for a martini like everyone else. You get a base alcohol charge - and additional $2 for the stuffed olives (really) and then an alcohol surcharge for the martini. It seems nonsensical......

I really enjoied my experience at Heritage Tavern. The menu had so many delicious items, we couldn't stop adding to our order. Each dish was full of fresh flavors and bright colors that really showcased the quality of not only the food it's self, but the staff who prepared it. Food tasted very fresh, however I did not care for the recipes. Good for Madison standards. Service was great. I gave atmosphere 4 stars because they sat a group of frat boys that very much smelled like boy next to my boyfriend and I. I had also asked for something quiet when making the reservation and they sat us in a small two person table squeezed between other people. Wine list was also very good.

UPDATE: The restaurant manager tried diligently to contact me in regards to my review. I'm so impressed by how seriously the owners take feedback and actually use it as a training opportunity. I will definitely be giving Heritage Tavern another shot when I'm up in Madison again.
I was super stoked to try this place after reading the reviews and stepping foot into an absolutely stunning restaurant. Service was good, and it was a strong start. They require you to order your apps and the mains at the same time to schedule it out, totally fine. Drinks were solid - nothing to write home about, but good.
After we got our drinks, more people started to come into the dining room. It was incredibly loud and started to be a bit off-putting. Our meal lasted about an hour, with the mains taking about 45 minutes to arrive at our table. We left immediately after finishing because we didn't want to keep trying to talk over the crowd.
Food left a lot to be desired. It felt like it was trying too hard. Deviled eggs were uncommon flavors of spicy tuna (didn't really taste like this at all), pork fried rice (very salty from the egg), and salmon roe (decent). It felt more like a novelty I'd eat once than a dish I'd want to order even twice. Salmon main was swimming in a cream colored sauce that wasn't very hot, and the potatoes were undercooked. The halibut was overcooked, under seared, and paired with bitter polenta, a ton of corn, and way too much pesto - it just didn't make sense. Overall, the dishes needed some heavy editing - less is more!
At this price point, I'd definitely expect more. I didn't factor this into my review, but if I did, I'd subtract half a star.

This is our second visit. We tried out the restaurant week menu this time and dishes are tasteful. We are very satisfied and will come back for sure. The pork is supposed to be medium, according to the server. But it might be a bit too raw for us so in the end we got a new plate with pork well done. You might notice we got three desserts and that is because of a small mistake but we are happy to try out all three desserts. Server was professional, friendly and very attentive . This is my favorite restaurant in Madison!

Normally we seek out a light brunch meal but the Farm-to-Table richness comes across in your food; it was so delicious! Loved your Bloody Mary's. Your staff was well informed on the menu & sold it well.
Only issue we had sitting outside on a busy corner was the car exhaust- but that's not your fault ;)

I would like to preface this review by noting that I initially considered rating Heritage Tavern at 3.5 out of 5 stars. However, I decided to give it 4 stars due to the exceptional service and the outstanding waitress we had.
Heritage Tavern occupies a unique price range within the Madison food scene. It is more expensive than establishments such as Food Fight restaurants or local spots like Merchant and Sardine, yet it remains more affordable than premium options like L'Etoile or Pig In A Fur Coat. The only other restaurant at a similar price point that comes to mind is Mint Mark.
I visited with a group of five, and we opted for the "Pick 6" charcuterie board, two orders of crispy pork belly and blackfin tuna, and a broccolini small plate to share. The cheese selection was impressive, offering plenty of variety. The crispy pork belly and blackfin tuna were well-balanced and enjoyable. However, the broccolini dish was somewhat disappointing, as it turned out to be broccoli instead.
For my drink, I had the blueberry caipirinha, which was satisfactory but not particularly innovative. My entrée was the pork porterhouse, which I found to be slightly dry. I acknowledge that this may be due to personal preference rather than a fault of the kitchen. The accompanying potatoes and asparagus, enhanced by the au jus from the pork, were quite delicious.
For dessert, I chose the chocolate mousse, which was excellent. My only suggestion would be to include more of the orange cream on top, as it provided a distinctive citrus note. Overall, while I would return to Heritage Tavern for special occasions, it would not become a regular spot for me. One of my friends ordered the pork schnitzel and later remarked that, while it was enjoyable, it did not offer sufficient value to justify its higher price compared to more casual options.

We reserved a table for a Sunday brunch here and it was really a great experience. The menu had some great options and everyone in our party loved what they ordered. I got the Brioche French Toast and it was incredibly rich and delicious. Our waitress was attentive and extremely personable and the vibes weere great all around.

Brunch at Heritage Tavern is fantastic. Their specialty is pork, so any meal with their ham is not to be missed. I also recommend a cinnamon roll for the table to share. On this occasion I had the whitefish crab cake, which was delicious. Consistently outstanding food and service make Heritage a top brunch choice.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Madison. The food is tasty, the service has always been outstanding and the atmosphere is great. I have had multiple meals there and have no complaints. This is my top recommendation for people that are looking for a place to eat downtown. IT is typically pretty busy, so make sure you get a reservation. If not, just sit at the bar - the bartenders are fantastic and it is an enjoyable expereince.

Bar service not as good as it used to be. No chat any more, just chat amongst themselves. Real shame they won’t serve me a single profiterole for desert anymore. 3 of these delicious profiteroles is just way too much for a single person. That was the reason I always visit when Madison so I guess Fairchild becomes my regular now.

Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. My husband and I shared the deviled eggs platter, charcuterie board, and the sour cream spaetzle accompanied by a 131 bourbon and the Syrah Zinfandel blend - everything was top notch. Highly recommend spending an evening at this establishment.

Heritage hosted an off hours Friday lunch for out of town guests of a wedding in Madison on Saturday. The buffet lunch was outstanding, with 3 meats (ham, roast beef and spare ribs), cheeses, salads, breads and desserts. The service was warm and welcoming. All who attended, many from New York, were highly impressed with the quality of the food and warm atmosphere. My understanding is that Heritage had never done one of these but it could not have gone better. Thank you!

Had to wait 10 minutes for our reservation and server didn't tell us about specials(I only realized there were specials when I overheard the table next to us being told them). The food was quite bland, though the presentation was pretty. The atmosphere inside is great, place is super cute!

Very busy during happy hour, but the staff are friendly and there were plenty of seats at the bar. The cocktails are unique and the plates are well portioned. It is close to everything in downtown Madison, but it feels like a hidden gem since it is off the main roads. I try to visit every time I'm in Madison.

Came in on a Saturday night and it was packed, but made a reservation same day with no issue. We were celebrating and got complimentary glasses of cava. The menu rotates a lot, but we split one small dish, one side, and one big dish and it was plenty. Great service and atmosphere in the restaurant.

I absolutely love the restaurant!❤️ every meal I’ve had has been spectacular. Anyone I take there loves it. Such unique and creative ways to highlight meat. Try the assortment of deviled eggs… I heard it through the grapevine some new versions will also be coming soon! I’d go back simply for the eggs. Heritage doesn’t disappoint!

We’ve been satisfied with the food and service in the past but unfortunately our meals last night were disappointing. Both steak based dishes they were 45 minutes in the making, tough meat, swimming in some oily dark sauce with overcooked root vegetables. Not sure with the $200.00 bill we’ll try again.

Been to the restaurant recently, had a good time except tried to order based off the items on the website. Menus don't match. Individual in my party was upset about no spotted cow on bottle list as listed on website, and they look forward to that when they come to Wisconsin... Many other menu issues. Luckily staff is amazing and made up for I.T. errors.

We had brunch at Heritage Tavern and it did not disappoint. We started with a couple of mocktail French "86"s and they were spot on delish. We then split a cinnamon roll (that has ham in it) - do not go to brunch without getting this item! My wife settled on the Heritage Benedict and I had the Lobster scramble. Both were excellent. The scramble came with a plain croissant that was light, crispy and tasty.
Service and atmosphere were excellent. Highly recommend. I will definitely come back to dine again.

BRUNCH REVIEW: at Heritage Tavern located in Madison!
Food: We ordered the Old Fashioned Ham cinnamon roll - so great- we split between 4 people but I easily could eat it myself :). Next we ordered their Heritage Burger. It was cooked great and recommend to have it done medium. Next order was the Maple Lamb Sausage and Savory French Toast. The maple lamb sausage was absolutely amazing and I would try it again. Finally we had the Steak And Eggs. The fried poached egg was very unique and tasty. It’s certainly how I want to have my poached eggs cooked going forward.
Food Opinion: 1) The savory French toast wasn’t personally for me. I think it’s something worth trying and seek your own opinion.
2) The steak I had was really rough unfortunately but not sure if it was just that day. We had another person order the same entree and their steak was rough as well.
Certainly try:
* cinnamon roll
* maple lamb sausage
* heritage burger
* fried poached eggs
We’ll certainly come back again for sure as there were other amazing items!
Service was great too!

The Heritage Tavern is a real treat to dine at. Great for dates and events, or just going out to eat, you will be able to find carefully balanced dishes with attentive waiting staff.
The atmosphere can get a little busy, but it is very calming and enjoyable.
With wide varieties of flavor palettes, there is so much food to explore. From soft and chewy pork belly that actually melts in your mouth and perfectly paired with diced mango and other flavors to light and tastefully balanced cranberry baravrois.
The wait staff are super accommodating and will help you if you are confused about the menu or need food choice advice.
Very nice and fun with farm decor and modern but rustic vibes with even the small details like the bathrooms carefully decorated.
Much recommended, the only thing to note is that the Heritage Tavern is slightly on the expensive side.

Good food. The portions are generous. Staff nice but service a little slow. This is the second week in a row that we went here and had this same issue. After receiving our first cup of coffee they rarely came past to refill/warm up our cups. We had to stop the waitress and ask for more. The food also took awhile to arrive. Once we received it, it was very good. We had to wait (20+ minutes) after we were all done eating to get "to go boxes" and our check.

My recent dining experience at Heritage Tavern in Madison, Wisconsin, was nothing short of remarkable. As soon as we entered, we were immersed in a classic and intimate atmosphere that set the tone for the evening. The restaurant's design, with its ambient lighting and vintage fixtures, created a sense of elegance and warmth, complementing the quiet hum of conversation around us.
The meal itself was a gastronomic journey, showcasing the best of Wisconsin’s produce. Each dish was a testament to the skill and creativity of the kitchen, with succulent meats and fresh, vibrant vegetables prepared to highlight their natural flavors. The courses were like a well-told story, each presenting a unique blend of textures and flavors that danced on the palate. It was evident that the chefs pay meticulous attention to detail, ensuring every element on the plate comes together harmoniously.
What elevated the dining experience, beyond the incredible food, was the level of service. The staff were attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable about the menu, and happy to make recommendations. They played a significant role in making our evening memorable.
Additionally, for wine enthusiasts, the selection here is impressive. The well-curated wine list provides perfect pairings for the dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience.
One more highlight worth mentioning is the tavern's commitment to local sourcing. It's not just a restaurant; it's a celebration of Wisconsin’s culinary heritage. This approach not only supports local farmers and producers but also ensures the freshest and highest quality ingredients are used.
If you're looking for more than a dining destination, Heritage Tavern is a place where every visit promises a new and exciting culinary adventure.
