I have been going to Hillery's since 1974 - when they were located on Lewis Ave in North Chicago. Before that, I went to a little place on Sheridan rd in North Chicago (Partners) but after it burned down I started going to the place on Lewis Ave.

The ribs at the Sheridan Rd location (the one that burned down) tasted identical to Hillery's, so I am guessing it was reborn as Hillery's.

After the place on Lewis Ave in Waukegan closed, I started going to the N. Lewis location in Waukegan.

I have also gotten ribs from both the Kenosha and Round Lake (before it closed) locations.

I use to come here often when i use to live in the area. Now that i live in Maryland its still such a treat to come and get the rib tips whenever im in town. We live 4 hours from Hillery's. When we go to Kenosha, we always try to get there for at least one meal. My husband's favorite is the spicy tips. They are always so nice and polite and welcoming, even when they are super busy and behind. And we definitely can't argue with the price.

My husband and I stopped by to try out the place because it sounded interesting and our meals were spectacular! We both ordered the beef brisket sandwich. Loved the tangy BBQ flavor. We'll definitely be back!

A helpful note: they are cash only, pick-up only, and at the time of writing this review, they require masks, so ensure to prepare before stopping by! It looked like they only had one employee (the owner), so they're a small operations. Very much worth it for the delicious BBQ.

I'm not sure I can communicate how bad this was. I ordered half a pound of brisket and half a pound of pulled pork. It took 35 minutes - which I suspect was microwave time. What I got was dry, smokeless meat with no discernable rub or bark - paired with sweetened ketchup. I am not a local so I'm not sure what "Kenosha BarB-Q" is code for, but I now know that if a bbq joint smells like sauerkraut instead of smoke that I should NOT order the bbq. The worst thing is that there were locals waiting in line for this stuff. I'm going to be thinking about those poor people every day now. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have even tried bbq in Wisconsin. I probably should have gotten the catfish - but is it actual channel cat or is it swai? Don't get me wrong - I'm not too pretentious for swai - but a bbq place should serve good old redneck, american fish - the kind of fish that looks at gun magazines in a hospital cafeteria and doesn't feel self-conscious about it. Do they put the sauerkraut on the fish? Seriously, what is up with the sauerkraut? Perhaps I am just culturally incompatible with this establishment and midwestern cuisine in general. Service was great.

Haven’t been to Hillery’s since pre-covid and based on some of the recent reviews wasn’t sure what to expect. Called ahead to ask a specific question, the phone was answered promptly and service was very friendly. Called a bit later to complete our order and again, quick answer and great service. Everything was ready on time, counter service was again very friendly & the food was great. Still the best fried chicken and rib tips around, and LOVE their bbq sauce- it’s truly unique! Signs are clearly posted on the door to wear a mask and as someone else mentioned they are cash only (can’t blame them with credit card fees). Many small, family owned businesses didn’t survive the covid shutdowns, really glad Hillery’s made it!!

Based on the look of the restaurant and how it looks on the inside is one of the reasons i gave it one star. But first and foremost my family recommended this spot and i knew it had to be a hit. What i didn’t know was that the customer service would be sub par and you also can’t call in to place an order. I called not once but twice to place an order in advance while en route to this business. Once i arrived though no one greeted me and once the lady behind the counter heard someone in the business she tells me no mask no service. Politely walks off, my thing is if that’s how you plan on running this place then why not try answering the phone to let customers know in advance prior to their arrival. I told her i understood and took my business elsewhere. It also looks like the health department needs to make a stop in this place because it certainly didn’t smell welcoming.

We called to make a order over the phone get there get our food and stuff then go home to check our order and didnt even get what we ordered then we call them back told them about our order being wrong and they said we already paid for it so we would have to repay for what we originally order and never got! Are you serious? What type of customer service is that and lady on the phone was totally rude. Needs to get there stuff right or dont do over the phone orders if you cant get people's order right. Worst customer service I've ever experienced!! Will not be back at all!

There has to be more than one phone line. The number is always busy. Each time there’s one person working two jobs and the phone is silent. There should be some way to get through without ordering at the place.

Usually this place is good food wise but I’ve been trying to call to place an order for four days in a row and no one seems to answer the phone I live the next town over so I don’t want to go all the way down there to place my order and wait an additional hour for it to be made I wish they would just answer their phone even if it they just say we’re not excepting any more orders right now or it will be a two hour wait or just one moment but they don’t answer their phone whatsoever very very disturbing because I used to go here all the time I grew up on Hillary‘s but now this actually turned me off on them right now because if you can’t ask truly answer the phone within for four days straight that I’ve been trying what’s going on are you closed.

I had my first time experience here for the first time in 10 years. I received horrible service from the owner Hillery. She was very impatient and rude. I felt overcharged and cheated. The fries were from a bag and was not what I expected! This is how I received fries with "mild sauce". The sauce was NOT traditional mild sauce and like I said I was overcharged for mild sauce. $2.75 when the menu states .$50 per cup.. so how does it come out to 2.75!? Overall I am TOTALLY dissatisfied with my food and service. I will NOT be returning. The owners character speaks measures about her character!!!!
