Hot Lunch,
As Kafka once said, all language is but a poor translation, and accordingly I don’t believe my words could possibly convey the religious experience I just had eating at Hot Lunch, but, valiantly, I will try. Stone cold sober on a Saturday night, and wiped after a long day at work, I trudged into Hot Lunch hoping for some comfort food. My friend and I ordered a mushroom melt, a cup of tomato bisque, some jalapeño chips, and two beers, an order we’ve gotten several times before sans tomato soup. Well, I’m not sure what crack they put in that tomato bisque, but it and the mushroom melt combined were earth shattering. One bite of my soup dipped sammie and I lived Anton Ego’s exact experience after a bite of Remy’s ratatouille. I enjoyed that meal more than I’ve ever enjoyed any drunk, and I’ve eaten and enjoyed many drunk meals. If I had the patience to write a thousand 5 star reviews under a thousand different pseudonyms I would, but since I don’t please just take my word for it and eat here. Also shoutout to the bartender and cook, they were awesome, and for facilitating this meal experience will forever hold a place in my heart.
Love, Sabine

I felt exceptionally welcomed here when I came for my first time in. I was coming for a vegetarian meal but what I got was so much more! The bartender aka guru is P-squared=pleasant and personable. The energy here is fun and contagious. It’s nostalgic and unique. You can tell it’s more than a bar/restaurant. It’s a passion project and it’s so fun! Thank you for bringing your awesome ideas to the world. We need more of them… “I’ll be bach (back)!” (Distill America 😄) Thank you again!

Really cool 90s vibe. Lots of old school decor. Menu is small but packs a punch. I ordered the meatball sandwich but everything looked amazing. Tried the grape soda and it was excellent. Definitely want to stop in again for lunch

Small, cute find that has an element of nostalgia and good food. Sandwiches and salad were tasty, only issue was that the thick sandwich bread can be rough on the mouth. Neat that they make homemade grape and orange sodas.

We were in town for a show and needed food. We came upon Hot Lunch and it was the best decision of the weekend. The decor was like I walking into my childhood from the 80’s/90’s. The sandwiches were probably the best I’ve ever had in my life. So good we went back the next day as soon as they opened. We didn’t get the mustached gentleman’s name working the morning shift but he was amazing. Couldn’t recommend enough. Please open a shop in Kenosha!

Went here during a visit based on the reviews. I ordered the meatball sub, my husband got the vegan banh mi, and the chili. This chili was missing several ingredients and had a flat, weak, slightly sweet flavor. The bread for the sub was stale, the sauce tasted like slightly doctored tomato paste with no nuance, and the fresh mozzarella added no flavor. The meatballs, which also lacked nuance were okay. The banh mi was average. I am not sure why this place is popular because the food doesn’t recommend itself.

Neat nostalgic place - they were playing Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure on the big screen TV when I was there. The menu isn't huge by any stretch of the imagination, but it is inventive. I got the pulled chicken sandwich, and it was massive. Very good, and plenty to take home. Served on a classic lunch tray (hence the name of the place, I'd have to assume).

Unfortunately, I have to echo some of the other less than stellar reviews. My wife and I are pretty confused as to the 4.9-star rating on here. For the price and time spent waiting, the sandwiches just weren't worth it. Neat atmosphere, so I suspect people enjoy it for that, but the food was very average. To their credit, they were very large sandwiches, just not very tasty. I got what some people called "the best sandwich in town," in the Hot Beef. I'd rather get one from Portillos 10/10 times; and for less money too. $40+ on two sandwiches, two sodas, and a close to 40 minute wait for a lunch is just something I can't recommend.

saw this place while working, looked cool so i looked it up online and saw 250+ reviews with a 4.9/5 rating????? come onnnnn, i had to stop by after work. i got the pulled chicken sandwich to-go and sat and waited for it to be made. giant tv playing a movie in front of me and to my right was one playing old cartoons, wasn’t bored for a second. got my food and ate it at home. you might think the menu looks simple, but this was easily top 3 sandwiches i’ve ever had in my life.
this one was a pretty messy sandwich but with the napkins included and my mouth, i couldn’t put it down (literally). AND they put smarties in the bag, what the heck that’s so cool. thank you for my free sweet treat

We try to hit this up every time we are in Madison. Not a simple feat with all the good food around. Don't sleep on the cookies, they are some of the best in the state. We almost always arrive late so I've yet to try the meatball... someday I swear! However the Bahn mi is fire weather you get the pork belly or vegetarian version. The hot beef might be the best sandwich you can get in the entire city. Did u mention the delicious house crafted sodas ? They have Schiltz on tap! What are you waiting for.

Visited a rainy weekday for lunch as we were passing through town. Had the highest ratings and wanted to try.

The service was a bit confusing at first, but you order at the bar and seat yourself without much direction to where.

I can't remember the sandwich I ordered in the picture provided, but the specific cheese overpowered everything and made it bitter but wasn't bad enough to not eat. The potatoe salad was good. Lastly, my girlfriend pork belly sandwich was wonderful but was slightly burnt and kinda had that aftertaste, but it was seasoned well from the initial taste, but that slight burnt flavor lingered with it.

The atmosphere was fun and engaging.

Overall, I'd come back and try something else or get the pork belly. 8/10 would recommend.

Every time we are on the road in the vicinity of this joint, we stop. Never been disappointed by a sandwich here. Better Italian beef than any I’ve had in Chicago and I grew up there. The house sodas are delicious. The dirt cup blew us away- real mousse! Real chocolate! The place has such personality and the music is always good. You can sense how much care and love the folks running this place put into it. If you’re looking for unpretentious, delicious, excellently crafted food with fresh ingredients, look no further.

I came to Hot Lunch on the recommendation of a friend, they’d heard all sorts of buzz about the place. In the mood for a sandwich, we sidled up to the bar and took our seats, and immediately set upon watching the TV. What’s this? We were halfway through Peter Jackson’s 2005 film King Kong, starring Naomi Watts and Adrien Brody.

Frankly, the film is not worth your time. I’m astonished that the same person who created the greatly lauded Lord of the Rings trilogy could fall so far. Sure, the CGI is real impressive for 2005. The creatures in the movie (which vary from dinosaurs, giant insects, and Mr. Kong himself) are rendered with great detail. A majority of the movie takes place on an island, which seems to be filmed on site in New Zealand. I can’t comment on the sound quality because the Hot Lunch TV’s were muted.

Oh, right, I ordered the Braised Pork Belly sandwich with buffalo potato chips and a side of Gam Gam’s Potato Salad. The food took quite a long time to arrive, maybe 50 minutes? Plenty of time for Kong. The real issue with the movie is the pacing. It’s excruciatingly slow. I started watching during a scene where Naomi Watts runs from a Tyrannosaurus Rex (that translates to Tyrant Lizard King, it’s one of the most fearsome dinosaurs). Naomi would run for 40 seconds, and then hide for 25 seconds, be discovered by the dinosaur, run for 40 seconds, etc. I was scrolling on my phone and couldn’t believe my eyes when I looked up after 5 minutes and realized Naomi was still running.

The following scene has Jack Black and Adrien Brody fend off a horde of gigantic locusts. Jack Black is crazy young in this movie! He barely looks like the Steve we know today (Minecraft). They run around for a while, then stuff happens blah blah blah and they capture King Kong and bring him back to New York. I think it’s around this time we got our food.

I was pretty peckish before we arrived so I actually asked for my buffalo chips out first, ahead of time. They came pre-packaged in a bag and were gone long before the rest came out. Delicious! The potato salad was decent, I might recommend another side. The Braised Pork Belly sandwich was slathered in a delicious tomato mayonnaise spread, on satisfyingly crunchy sourdough bread. The pork was fall apart tender, worth the wait. Portion size was massive, too. Almost needed a box.

The climax of the film is the classic King Kong experience, he escapes in New York City and climbs the Empire State Building where he is pestered by biplanes. It’s, as usual, far too long. The denouement results in King Kong succumbing to the airplanes and falling head over foot off the building. Honestly, I laughed. He’s just a big monkey.

Cool place, nice atmosphere. They had good music and a pretty aesthetic. Played old time kid movies that I really loved.

It Took a long time to get food and the person who took my order was short/rude. Got the pulled chicken and the classic. Both were average and super expensive. Like $14 or $15 for the sandwich alone. (No chips pr drink) Can get better sandwiches for cheaper somewhere else. I'd prefer a sandwich from subway or milios. The soup was really really good though. Cost $7 for the bowl and we dipped our sandwiches in it to enjoy them more. The dessert dirt cup cost $7 and it was like one super small scoop. Rather than a mousse, it's more akin to a thick chocolate icing. Very dense and overly sweet.

Overall, I have no idea how they have 4.9 stars but I won't be coming back. Price is not worth the food.

It's a cute spot. I came here two summers ago, right when they opened and caught them at a time when they were not busy. I asked the person behind the counter what was their favorite item, to which I got a response of 'What a ridiculous question, would you ever ask a parent their favorite child?" and then a bit of a 5 minute rant about customers who ask that type of question. He asked me if I agreed with his take. I got the sandwich that you dip into some broth. I ate it there, taken aback so I didn't leave. The guy behind the counter gave me a cookie and apologized because I looked and felt really uncomfortable/wasn't responding to his other inquiries.

The sandwich was ok and not standout. I think I caught the guy on a weird day, but I haven't gone back because IMO, felt a bit unnecessary.

Dont sleep on this place. No joke, the best sandwich I’ve ever had. The flavor, the portion size, and presentation was a 10/10. Haven’t had a sandwich this good since. All their sides are so great as well.

Disappointed after waiting 40 minutes for 4 sandwiches and despite the name being Hot Sandwiches, my sandwich was not hot. For the price and size of the sandwich, there are far better options

1st time stopping here for lunch & we will for sure be back. I asked bartender Glen what the best sandwiches was & he said all of them. He was not wrong!! Owner & chef Micheal made the best sandwiches I’ve had in a long time. My husband, daughter & I tried each of our sandwiches the turkey, the classic,& pulled chicken. We couldn’t pick a favorite. The tomato bisque & mac n cheese were also amazing. The fun atmosphere was enjoyable to look at during the short wait. Highly recommend!!

They had Schlitz on tap and a mushroom melt like I've never had before all within a fun 90s environment. Yeah, will be back a lot. Stop it, it's well worth it.

Cute creative sandwich place with a 90s kid vibe. Some things are a bit overpriced but that's the price for nostalgia

My boyfriend and I stopped in here for lunch and absolutely loved it! The atmosphere is awesome and the bartender greeted us right as we walked in. Fun 90’s vibe! The food was 10/10 and chef brought out the food in a super timely manner. We had the meatball sandwich and a turkey sandwich and both were so good. I highly recommend!

I've been here 4-5 times now, and each time is simply spectacular. I've tried the hot beef, meatball, pulled chicken.. they're all unreal. You can tell the staff cares, and they're always super friendly. Go to sandwich spot in Madison.

Yum. Such Yum. This is inconveniently located for me and yet, I'm trying to figure out when I can go back. The potato chips are forgettable. Don't recommend that add-on. The homemade orange soda is expensive but so good. I had the hot beef and it. was. a.m.a.z.i.n.g., but also pretty expensive, especially with no sides. I got it with all the add-ons (cheese, peppers, etc). I still highly recommend, but be prepared to spend a decent amount on this, especially for lunch.
