This place is exactly what it should be - unassuming really good food , with attentive service.
Had the spicy crunchy chicken and the yangzou fried rice.

Also got the braised spicy chicken and green beans to go for a later meal. Every dish was delish and exactly how I like it. So flavorful!!
Check it out!

We ordered takeout and enjoyed all the food! The spicy crispy chicken (lazi ji) was absolutely delicious! Even with it sitting in the container while we transported it back (25 mins) the chicken was super crispy still. The pieces were perfect bite sizes. We also enjoyed the mapo tofu, meifun, fried rice, twice cooked pork, and spicy green beans. Everything was packed with flavor and savory. I was super impressed with their service as they were able to get the items prepared very quickly during a busy time. If you enjoy Sichuan cuisine, this place offers traditional dishes at an affordable price. Will definitely be our go to spot!

This place is so amazing, one of my favorite restaurants in Madison! The picture provided was from my most recent trip consisting of braised lamb (AMAZING), pickled pepper chicken, spicy green beans, lemongrass chicken wings, and scallion cakes. I've tried probably 10 or more different dishes from here and they never disappoint. I've been coming here for years and will continue for years to come

Delicious, delicious Szechuan food. If you like spice and Szechuan pepper, this is the place. There's non-spocy food too but we rarely order it. Favorites: Spicy, crispy fish; spicy green beans; Szechuan eggplant; Mapo Tofu; hot and sour potatoes. But there are so many things we haven't tried and I bet they're good too. Service is good and the food usually comes out quickly.

We were really excited to try this Chinese restaurant, especially because I’m Chinese and had been traveling for a while without finding a good Asian spot. We weren’t super hungry, so we decided to keep it light and ordered the boiled dumplings, scallion pancakes, and the veggie tofu soup.

When the dumplings arrived—only six of them—I took one bite and immediately knew something was off. They tasted exactly like the Trader Joe’s chicken dumplings I’ve had before. I asked the waitress directly, and she confirmed that yes, the dumplings were store-bought. I was shocked. I told her this should have been made clear when I ordered, especially since their menu photo clearly shows what looks like homemade dumplings.

Then came the scallion pancakes, and once again they looked nothing like the pictures on the Google listing or the printed menu. They were flat, pre-made, and clearly not fresh or handmade. I asked about this too, and the waitress admitted they were also store-bought. Her justification? Most of their customers are American and don’t really care.

That was incredibly disappointing. Whether or not most patrons notice, it doesn’t excuse misleading presentation or false advertising. If you’re marketing your food as authentic Chinese cuisine and showing homemade dishes on your menu, it’s dishonest to serve frozen, mass-produced items without disclosing it.

Needless to say, we won’t be coming back unless they advertise properly. Authenticity matters—especially when it’s promised and not delivered.

Not sure what the 'Ichiban' part of the restaurant name is, as it is a Sichuanese restaurant, but the food is amazing here.

I judge most Sichuanese places based on their fuji fei pian (sliced beef in chili oil), and they do it well.
I would generally say their dishes should have more Sichuan peppercorn (like their mapo tofu), but besides that the flavors are excellent, and you can't go wrong with most of the traditional Chinese dishes.

My favorite place in the city for Sichuan food!

My wife and I were in Madison for a family event the next day. We were staying with my brother. We got there after 9pm. We ordered the spicy crispy chicken, spicy boil fish, lamb with cumin, and beef hotpot. The food was fantastic just how we remembered it 6 years ago when we lived in Madison. Although I think they took the spice and peppercorn down a couple of notches so other people can learn to enjoy Sichuan food.

Very disappointed and disgusting place to eat. Horrible smell when you first walk in and don’t even think about using the bathroom…Dried up feces we’re smeared all over the bathroom…Food looks and tastes very microwaved..Save your money, there are far better places to eat. Also the parking is terrible and you will have to walk a mile just to get to the place.

Excellent, reliable, and quick! Dry braised hotpot dishes are outstanding and their indonesian fried rice is one of the best dishes I've ever had. They get busy during peak dinner hours and pickup parking on Park is pretty limited so it's often easiest to park on Emerald and walk half a block.

Possibly the worst food I’ve ever had. Spicy Crispy chicken was in fact crispy breading with virtually NO chicken and no spice. There was no food value at all on the plate and ended up having an $15 bowl of dry white rice. Unfortunately in the restaurant game, horrible food outweighs fine service.

Took me a long time to finally go here for dinner, glad I did. Excellent range on the menu, nice variety of fish dishes in particular compared to Madison average. Fast and polite service, not a lot of chatter but that's fine. Food comes out fast. Taiwanese Beef Soup Noodles - the bowl was huge, the broth was rich and tasty, jammed with noodles, braised beef and very nice soft beefy tendon. Easily two meals worth. Wife got vegetarian Ma Po Tofu and it was very good also. Cold spicy roast beef appetizer was excellent, it was nice tender sirloin roast sliced thin and covered with chili oil, Sichuan pepper and garlic, I liked it better than the braised shank I've had served this way.

Seated immediately, 3 of us. Not very busy, Monday dinner. Ordered 4 main entree and one appetizer. Came to our table in about 5 minutes! The Dumplings with spicy sauce were amazing! Not very spicy. Tasted so light and fluffy and homemade! Fried rice was almost deceptive. Looked pale to begin with, but the flavor was absolutely addictive! Veggie Mei fun was delicious. Shredded pork in garlic sauce was good. Spicy chicken was not exactly what we expected. It was crispy chicken bites with spicy peppers. Was hoping for some sauce. Would absolutely recommend!!!!

One of my go-to spots. The food here is really good. There’s food for both authentic and American Chinese food, seafood to smoked duck. Great hot pot. Their Mei Fun, spicy green beans, and spicy crispy chicken are some of my favorites.
Service is fast and to the point. Dining in with a friend once we had written our order down ahead of time, when we went to order our waitress took the piece of paper we’d written our order on without having to say all of the names of the dishes, which is awesome for if you’re introverted and feeling awkward.

Ordered Orange Chicken, Sesame Chicken, and Shanghai Spring Rolls from the American-Chinese menu. It was terrible. The orange chicken tasted like someone melted orange soda or orange candy on breaded chicken. There was no other flavor beyond a super sugary orange candy type flavor to the sauce. Trader joes frozen bag of orange chicken is way better. The sesame chicken was just sweet and sour chicken with 5 sesame seeds on top. I kid you not. There was a total of 5 sesame seeds on top of an order of sweet and sour chicken. Sesame Chicken usually is a garlic type of sauce, brown, and not bright yellowish orange. I dont know why they only put 5 sesame seeds on top of it. The rice was dry and a chore to eat. Most of the meal went to waste because the flavor was terrible. Oh, and about half the pieces of chicken were so dry. It was like freezer burned or something. Some of the chicken reminded me of bad, dried out jerky. The Shanginese spring rolls are just tiny egg rolls. They are filled with a little tiny bit of a typical vegetable mix and some type of filler that is a tasteless breading. This type of little egg roll with the breading filler is common in lower quality Chinese restaurants. Good restaurants just use vegetable mix. But, in the US, at least, spring rolls are often something very different from mini egg rolls. I was expecting mini egg rolls. But I had hoped they would be better than the cheap little toaster egg rolls that I can buy from the freezer section at any grocery store.
I don't know where to go for a good American-Chinese experience in Madison. But, now I do know where not to go.

Enjoyed lunch with my wife and infant on a Thursday. The restaurant only had a few occupied tables so we had fast service. The staff was welcoming and friendly and helped with suggestions since there are so many options. The menu has a large section for more authentic Chinese food, as well as, a section for more Americanized dishes. We had a nice and relaxed dine-in experience. We’d happily come back in to enjoy more quality Chinese dishes compared to lower quality takeout Chinese restaurants.

My families favorite place for Chinese food in Madison. My sister-in-law from Shanghai even approves of it which is high praise indeed.

Skip the section in the menu that says “Chinese American” and try something more authentic. I'm pretty sure that is actually really good as well but you can get that at other Chinese restaurants in Madison.

My family loves the scallion pancakes, tendon in chili oil, spicy green beans, crispy & spicy fish, mapo tofu, cumin lamb and or beef, braised pork belly, hot pot... Honestly everything we've ordered here has been fantastic.

Tip: If you go with eight or more people, ask for the round table in the back with a lazy susan on it. Then order a bunch of different things and share it family style. Such a fun way to eat and you get to try different things.

Overly extensive menu that doesn't need to be, traditional Americans appreciate the basics and like the ease of finding those basics, unfortunately it is overly elaborate, totally unnecessary and nothing truly traditional, us non-Asian Americans can appreciate, they need to simplify and get back to basics offer extensions but don't make them the focal point, there is hope, hopefully. The menu was so confusing we simply left and went up the road to la hacienda and boring bland tasteless Mexican, does anyone pay attention anymore in this world or is everybody 80%ers?

This is one of the few Szechuan style restaurants that everyone who comes to study or work in Madison should try at least once. Huge portions and countless dishes. Look at the picture of the two dishes I ordered and you will see how much meat they give you. From shareable plates to chinese-american classics, this restaurant has it all. Vegetable dishes are fine, but the meat dishes are bold in both flavor and presentation. This is one of the few spots in Madison which has stayed consistent throughout the years. If you don’t know what to order, order one of the dishes with a menu picture, a lot of the pictures are popular dishes and you cannot go wrong. They also always have featured dishes written on the chalkboard which are great choices if you are looking to try something new. The bathrooms are not the cleanest, but fine if you want to just wash your hands. Free street parking and always open.

Absolutely, hands-down best *authentic* Sichuan restaurant, not only in Madison, but in this part of the country.
To be clear, this isn't Americanized "Chinese" food - expect lots of chili oil, Szechuan peppercorns and "snout to tail" ingredients.
If you're willing to be adventurous, this place will never let you down.
Get the spicy cucumbers as well as the pickled woodears - you'll thank me.

One of my family's go-to places for delicious Chinese dishes that you cannot get from a more American style Chinese restaurant.

I'm finally done supporting this place. It used to be a phenomenal spot to grab incredible food (which you might happily regret the next day). I have gone there for years and was thrilled with there recent success, but golly... They CANNOT keep up, both with service and quality. Their food now stands in a similar foothold with other eastern Asian restaurants that offers unique offerings. If anything I'd rather spend my money at Sonny Pho right next door

Ichiban is the best Sichuan food I've had in Madison, Chicago, or Singapore. I recommend:
-Spicy Boiled Sliced Beef or Fish
-Spicy & Crispy Chicken or Fish
-Spicy Beef Tendon
-Eggplant w. Chili Garlic Sauce
-Mei Fun with Shrimp or Chicken

It's worth noting their American Chinese food dishes are excellent also.

Not tasty at all!! Not recommend.
The pictures on the menu are from online (the server firstly said they took the pictures by themselves, after I asked why is the dishes we have are different than the pictures, the server then said the truth with worse attitude!)
实物与图片完全不符,服务员承认了图片是网上找的,不是自己的真实菜品!挂羊头卖狗肉。

Delicious authentic sichuan food!! Get the more authentic dishes (fu qi fe pian, etc) and also cumin lamb, and you won't be disappointed! Yes it is oily, but it is chili oil which is one of the bases of sichuan cooking. Try it out!

This place is amazing; absolutely 5 stars. I dunno why people are rating this place poorly on Google, that's messed up.

Spicy crispy chicken all the way! And the green beans. And the boiled fish. Ichiban is my favorite restaurant in Madison! 💕

2 of 5 for two dishes out of five ordered were good. Rice noodles in soup were mushy and the salt and pepper shrimp was overcooked. Don’t mind peeling shrimp but then you lose all the spices. Pretty greasy dishes overall.

We ordered the spicy and sour sliced potatoes and pickled cabbage fish soup. Both are awesome. In addition, we have tried similar sliced potatoes at different places, like California or Minnesota. This one here is the best one among all. A must try for those who like potatoes 🥔
