Sat outside in the beer garden, my wife and I had walleye fish frys and a Bavarian pretzel to start, everything was delicious. Their menu has some vegan options and mocktails too if you're into that, big recommend all around.

Very disappointing evening. Drove from far away to experience this old world Fish Fry. We had reservations at 8:00. Sat down to eat about 8:15. The minute we sat we were informed by our waitress that they were out of most the fish on the menu. Plus the normal menu is not offered so the selection to chose from is very limited. Strange thing for a place that is supposed to be known as a Great Fish Fry? They were open till nine. It would have been nice to know that they had no fish before we were sat down to eat. Weird thing is that they ran out of the most popular fish...cod? Most places run out of Walleye , Blue Gill or Perch. All we had to choose from was Grouper. So we order other things. The food was good. Make things more strange, we are finishing up our dinner and all the help was putting the chairs on top of the tables while we were sitting there. I guess you need to get to this place a 4:00 if you want to eat some fish?

Food was delivered promptly..experience showed by our waitstaff timing servings very well. Food was as authentic german food as you could get. The surroundings takes you back over a century with wonderful pictures and prints capturing old Milwaukee german heritage. 1st time here, but not last.

Ordered the Grouper Fish Fry with fries. Really good. Great crunchy breading, thick, unlike any other I've had in Milwaukee. Fries were fresh, and the tartar sauce is top notch. The rye bread and coleslaw were also eaten. Lol. I don't drink alcohol and the level of drunkenness in there was more than I prefer, but expected. Loud in there too. Overall I enjoyed it and would return.

I have wanted to try Kegel's for ages, I finally had my chance. I went for Friday fish fry, I went before the rush, at 3pm to avoid crowds. Boy was i disappointed!
I ordered Classic Cod FISH Fry, the fish was ok but the portion was crazy small, loads of mediocre fries though. I wanted the fabulous potato pancakes and German Potato Salad 😶 so I ordered them as extras. Potato pancakes were just plain sad. And I will no longer aspire to make my home made German Potato Salad as good as the restaurants! Overall, I had an underwhelming experience from a surly server to extremely vinegary potato salad. Everything was just not good.

place looked great.
had the Jägerschnitzel, pretty small for the price and only got a little brown gravy on the side with it. I assumed it would had mushrooms in it( like the real stuff in Germany), but it was just brown gray. salad was good. got a dumpling with it. it a Semmelknödel (bread) dumpling, it was pretty dry and they put a little butter over it, but it didn't help. had not enough gravy to dunk it in. daughter had the Rouladen, pretty small, but the taste was good. other daughter had the goulash. for $34 it was a big plate. when paying the bill they come with the handheld and stand right next to you when you pay and tip that's kinda annoying.

I haven't been here for a few years, but it's such a wonderful thing to be able to visit an old world multi-generational restaurant, especially a german one. In wisconsin we don't have too many of those left so I was eager to see their current menu. So many great choices. I started the evening with a bourbon Manhattan, which was absolutely delicious, however, they didn't have Luxardo cherries which for me makes all the difference in the garnish for a Manhattan. The food the food was amazing! I ordered a bowl of the liver dumpling soup, yes I love liver. We're going to then I ordered the Polish Warsaw but ask for no bun. He came with a side of red sweet and sour cabbage, fries, and wow cheese curds. I haven't a couple of great conversations going on at the bar. It was a very enjoyable evening. As I was heading to my car I heard a little music so I went to to check it out and it was a band in the biergarden. What a treat! I'll be back.

Went here for a birthday dinner. Did. Not. Disappoint. The service was awesome. Laid back and professional. The food surpassed my expectations. The goulash was absolutely fantastic. The beer flight was perfect. The red cabbage was exactly what I wanted. My partner had the schnitzel and loved it. A little something for everyone. The music was A+. Joni Mitchell, steely Dan, Paul Simon, etc. made a huge difference. Strongly recommend this place! We had gone to Maders a few months back and did not like it. This is the place to go for German food.

beautiful, cozy building with incredible service and stellar food!!!! best German food i’ve had in ages. Lisa, our server, was so kind and helpful and made the experience so delightful. i got the beef goulash over spaetzle and it was perfect, so tender it literally fell apart with no knife needed! everything we got was so delicious and fresh and you can taste that it’s made from scratch. will definitely come back here next time im in MKE!! thank you!

Got the 3-2-1, check it out. Great old fashioneds. Just a classic German Beer Hall and outstanding fish fry that should be on your rotation. Walleye was amazing, and perch and cod were good too. Poutine unreal, cheese curds yes. Grebe’s rye unreal. Try Station No. 6 for cocktails beforehand.

Lemon drop & cheese curds were great! Everything else was just ok but that may be because I don't eat German food often so I'm not used to their way of cooking. The duck was expensive for what it was. It had ok flavor but the potatoes were sticky & gravy ran everywhere (including off the plate). The live band was interesting

Expected so much more from this iconic restaurant. The beer garden is a great addition, and the decor sets the mood, but the food was very disappointing. The dumplings in the soup were very soggy and the soup lacked flavor. The potatoe pancakes were greasy, and looked like something out of a box. The perch was burnt, and served on a child's sized plate, with a child size portion, at an adult price. Won't be back.

Stopped into Kegel Inn hoping for a classic German meal, and while the service and atmosphere were both excellent—warm, welcoming, and full of old-world charm—the food just didn’t live up to the setting.

I ordered the Rouladen, which was unfortunately dry and tasted like it had been made well ahead of time, lacking that fresh, comforting flavor you’d expect. The Schnitzel à la Holstein wasn’t bad, but it felt more like a deconstructed chicken piccata than a thoughtfully executed German dish—technique could use some tightening up.

Considering the underwhelming quality of the food, the prices felt steep. Kegel Inn nails the vibe and hospitality, but the kitchen needs to catch up. Here’s hoping they can bring the food in line with the rest of the experience.

Kegel has been there for five generations and is a Milwaukee must-go. Beer menu is all-German as is the food menu. Portions are generous and well-prepared. I've had better but not at this price and "better" here means the entree was just a little short of "great." The 'kraut and potato salad were both outstanding. The service was good if not a little overbearing. Parking is a minor challenge --- mostly street parking in a residential neighborhood. The atmosphere tries for a Bavarian vibe but it may be time for a little refreshing. Seasonal outdoor seating with live music sometimes. All in all, a nice experience.

Incredible service, amazing atmosphere, perfect event venue!

We hosted a client appreciation event at Kegel’s Inn, and everything exceeded our expectations. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly attentive—multiple servers and bartenders made sure we had everything we needed without us ever having to ask. They were proactive, friendly, and on top of every detail.

The event space was both accommodating and charming, with a warm, welcoming vibe. The traditional German-style atmosphere added such a unique and festive feel, and the food and drinks were absolutely fantastic—authentic, flavorful, and perfectly suited for a crowd.

Kegel’s was the perfect partner for our event, and we’re grateful for the outstanding experience they delivered. Highly recommend for any gathering, big or small!

My brother and I came to this restaurant having heard it has some of the best German food in Milwaukee. We ordered take out and everything was nice. When we paid the bill, I didn't leave a tip because we were doing take out. Maybe that's why this happened, but they completely left out my food (Karma Parma). We called them back immediately when we saw this happened and we gave them our card number and order number. They said we would get a refund on the karma parma, but it has yet to happen. It's a shame, because the food was nice and the servers were friendly people. If it wasn't for this unfortunate experience, we would definitely come again.

Let me start here Building has so much charm, wait time 25 minutes but was only 5 so that was impressive now heres where it starts, Old fashioned not even muddled, just poured in a glass and 3 cherries as a garnish. Table experience Waitress was preoccupied, when we ordered we asked for soup with the meal, she brought it anyways and said i know you wanted with meal but she didn't want forget it, she was to quick as we were ordering to try and run off to the next table, food was poor quality, baked potato you could tell was cooked all day but just handed out as meals come, the 3 piece baked cod was mushy and not flaky and flavorless, we ate 1 piece, then as you close your check they tell you how
much and shove there bill tablet in your face and basically hawk as you try and figure out what a Gratitudity should be left and it starts at 18% forcing patrons under pressure to leave the minimal no matter on lack luster experience I honestly rate this as 1 star, majority the workers not very pleasant, seem aggravated and upset that customers coming in.This is definitely not the Kegel legacy as we have visited before and had a sour experience so this was the second time with the new owners. I would highly not recommend this establishment for a Famous Friday fish fry

Went to Kegels for the first time in about 10 years and was extremely disappointed. Fish fry was extremely expensive-$19.00 for 4 very small pieces of breaded cod, tiny plastic cup of coleslaw, tiny plastic cup of tartar sauce and French fries. Had 2 beers and a small appetizer. Bill with tip-$92.00. Will not go again.

I had the chicken schnitzel sandwich with fries. The chicken was so dry I thought I'd pull a tooth out trying to get a piece. Mentioned it to our waiter who said he'd speak to his manager. I honestly thought the manager would stop by to apologize and offer some compensation or ask if I wanted something else. But I guess they didn't care that a customer had a bad meal. They offered to take my $3 soup off my bill. Seriously? Also my friend said their beef rouladen was not very good. My glass of wine was good. The waiter was good and tried to be helpful with the situation. But since the manager couldn't be bothered to come and speak to us, we can't be bothered to ever return and will pass our thoughts along to anyone who asks for a recommendation. So long Kegel's

Eh. Overpriced food with slow wait service. Wasn't very impressed. The sun streaming into the dining room made it uncomfortably warm as well. My itty bitty $5 salad was laughable. Just a few leaves.

The perks were the outdoor live music in the Biergarten and the bartender. After we were done with our dinner, the outdoor area was very refreshing, the music was awesome and the tender behind the bar was very prompt and friendly.

Doubt I'll go back for dinner, but I'll definitely come back for the Biergarten.

Only gave it a one star as the service staff was great and it realy is a nice looking place. But the food is another story. Tjis was our second time here and our last. Food was same as the first. My wife and I had the fish fry. Cod for me walleye for her. First came the new England clam chowder. It was tasteless and like water!! Not the nice white creamy soup others have. The fish was horrible again to say the least. Over cooked and very small. Her walleye had the same fishy taste that you get from ocean perch. Even the diet cola was funky. I had better tasting fish sticks then I had here. It a shame that the standards of this places food is so sub par. Oh well live and learn.

Disliked breading, compare to Culver's chicken tenders breading

Very fresh good tasting fish but breading

waited over 5 min for additional tarter after waving over calling out 3x and waiter ran away at request and drop off before we could request refills on drinks since they werent paying attention to that either.

Apple dessert was soggy and brought to us about 30 seconds after ordered which tells me it was probably precut and in hot box.

What's not to love about a German Bier Garten in Milwaukee. Food great along with Hofbrau beer and music. We will be going back.

Had lunch here with a bakery tour group. Everything was so, so good! Service was amazing, especially with a bus full of people.

Thinking that with this place being one of the top rated fish fry joints in the city, I'd be stunned by my dinner this evening. I'd have to say the fish was not what it was cracked up to be. Very small portions and no seasoning that I could find across the boars. Wasn't aware that adding potato pancakes would nix my French fries for an up charge. Quite pricy. Best part was the salad, parmesean fry appetizer and the Grebes rye bread.

This place was absolutely phenomenal! Not only was the food amazing, but we were waited on by one of the owners, Stephanie, and she was fantastic. We were in town from Texas celebrating my husband’s birthday and went to experience their infamous Fish Fry Friday. The cod, perch, and walleye were amazing on top of the appetizers we got and the house made Apple strudel! I can’t recommend this place enough. They make you feel at home and enjoy making your day that much better.

I’ve been a fan of Kegel’s fish fry for years. The broiled walleye is my favorite. The sides are excellent especially the red cabbage. Grandma’s Carrot Cake is delectable and even more special, owner Julian Kegel kindly shared his grandmother’s recipe with me! Established in 1924, I attended the 100 Year Celebration Party last night, Dec. 5, and was introduced to their savory roasted duck with stuffing, gravy and cranberries - a classic dish now my new favorite! The party was grand and highlighted tradition, community and delicious food - all that you find at Kegel’s Inn.

The service was a plus. Hostess and server were friendly, welcoming and our food came out quickly. We came for the fish fry because we’ve heard it’s great (ordered two 3-2-1 dishes). Highly overrated! They should be ashamed of themselves for serving that unseasoned, tasteless, over priced fish. We barely ate any of it after the first couple of bites. The fish reminded me of fish sticks I used to eat as kid. In fact, their fish may even be worse than fish sticks. You’d be better off getting some Van de Kamp’s from the frozen food section at the grocery store. The chicken dumpling soup was good, though.

Fun German experience in the Midwest! Very cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. Great selection of beer available and tons of authentic German dishes. Sausages were excellent and price was extremely reasonable for dinner ($25-$30 per person)... Try it out!

Fish fry was good but why would a German restaurant have you pay extra for potato pancakes and the pieces of fish were so small we left there hungry. And way to noisy.

I almost never leave food reviews, but I felt I had to in the case of Kegel's. This was the best German food I've ever had in my 70 years -- including many times in Germany and from my German grandma (sorry grandma!). I've never had saurbraten so moist (how did they do that?); the red cabbage was the perfect blend of sweet and sour; the kraut had just the perfect tang; and I loved the sweet-sour hot potato salad. The architecture and atmosphere both have authentic Olde World charm. An experience not to be missed! (Oh, and the service was perfect!)

Went on Friday for fish fry. I had groomer . I think they made it in the morning, it was so flat and dry. The potato pancakes did not look or taste homemade for a German restaurant. Very dissatisfied and will not be returning.

It was definitively not good Bavarian and was overpriced, but it was at least edible despite the Spätzle being gray and the beans being from a can. The beer garden was nice.

We stayed at the Inn. It was great. Old like the entire Inn and restaurant and charming.

We went to Milwaukee on a brief first time visit to see the city and attend a game at their great ballpark. Kegel’s is perfectly located for everything we wanted to do. Milwaukee is a great city! We will be back.

The restaurant was astounding. Sophia was our waitress and she was great, funny and very attentive. The hostess who greeted us acted like we were old friends.

My favorite dish out is roast duck and it’s Kegel’s highlight. Best roast duck I’ve ever had, large, perfectly done on a bed of homemade stuffing. Sides of liver dumpling soup, red cabbage, garlic mashed potatoes and a cheese curd and white sausage poutine for a starter. Fantastic. Both our meals were great. Large draft beers and a Ginger mule were (again !) great. We got two large soft pretzels for when we traveled home. Then, full and happy-we went to the ballgame where our Phillies won.

A perfect evening and end to three great days. Milwaukee is very welcoming and the people were great. The public market. The lakeshore (Kegel’s has a beer garden there! Thanks, Mike and Trevor!)

Cannot recommend highly enough. It’s not a state of the art place. It is a great, warm, welcoming, safe and perfectly located place to stay - and other than Sunday and Monday when it’s closed, a great dinner. We’d have eaten there every night but we arrived Sunday and left Wednesday. The menu is that good!
