My date was very excited and enjoyed the seafood boil. As a vegetarian I only had one option on the menu- kids mac and cheese. I love mac and cheese and visiting wisconsin I was excited to try. To my demise I am served kraft mac and cheese with a side of lays potato chips. Imagine operating a restaurant in Americas dairyland and serving kraft. Such a shame. Service was very good but the owner should be ashamed.

Tonight's cajun seafood boil hit all the right notes. The spice blend was warming rather than overwhelming - and every component from the shrimp to the vegetables absorbed those rich flavors beautifully.
The staff made the whole experience feel relaxed and welcoming. No rushed service or forgotten requests, just attentive care that let us savor both the food and the evening.
Highly recommend the trip!

WOW!! Me, my husband and two friends put this on our latest Door County list and let me tell you, this experience and the food was one of the highlights of our trip! The food scene in Door County tends to disappoint, but the quality of Kettle Black and the passion behind the owner shown through! My girlfriend and I chose the Cajun shrimp boil option while our husbands opted for the chicken. The flavors of everything exceeded our expectations and left us in awe! The owner offered the option of adding on a lobster tail at the last moment, which we did because the smells were too enticing, which we did not regret. The lobster addition was well worth it! If going for a fish boil in Door County, Kettle Black should be top of the list!

Disappointing. Not what was described online. The Boil was started 30 minutes late, and about as exciting as watching paint dry. The food was well seasoned but the seafood and veggies were very overcooked. There wasn't very clear instructions upon arrival except a hand drawn cardboard sign taped to the window. When pointed questions were asked of the staff, multiple answers were given, contradicting each other. On their webpage, it is suggested to arrive 20 minutes early to watch the boil, but ours didn't start until 30 minutes after our reservations, with the owner blaming it on overbooking guests. Our expectations were elevated by the previous reviews, but we were very disappointed with the actual service and product. Definitely not worth the price.

We had a lovely dinner at kettle black this past Monday. They helped make accommodations for us and our dog on their back patio. Great view of the boil and the waterfront from our seats. The food was Delicious! We went for the traditional boil but the chef had this house made cajun seasoning and remoulade at each table. So good! I meant to pick up a bottle but forgot... next time!

We had an outstanding overall experience here. The atmosphere, experience, service and food were so good. You definitely need to make this a priority on your Fish Creek trip. The Cajun Shrimp boil was unique to anything else in our county and the flavors were absolutely off the charts. It is spicy, so make sure you’re prepared for that. My 81 year old mom thought it was a little too spicy so she had the chicken and said it was outstanding. Paul, the owner, comes around to each table and really makes you feel welcome after also showing you how he does the entire boil. You also get a ton of food so come hungry! Everything was on point with our night at Black Kettle.

We had a fun time overall! We had the fish boil and ribs, which were yummy but not life-changing. The food and experience were good, and the service was great. The potatoes were fantastic and the best part of the meal. Do be prepared to de-bone your own fish! It was also fun to get the cherry pie at the end, but given how big the meal is, it would be nice to be offered a to-go option. When we asked our server whether there was one, she seemed very confused.
Even though the staff were attentive, and this may not be a controllable factor, it took over an hour to get our food after being told to get to the restaurant 15 mins before our reservation (on the website, it said 20 mins, but the restaurant had a sign outside saying 15 minutes). The restaurant was pretty crowded as well, but not too noisy.
Overall, we are glad we had this experience, and we would recommend others try it, but we don’t know if we would return. But maybe we will try it again to do the shrimp boil!

This was nothing short of amazing. The atmosphere was great. Sitting out and talking with the boil master and following up with him moving from table to table giving individual time. Then let's talk about the Cajun boil... Spectacular! Started with a good level of spice and they gave you the ingredients to kick it up as well.

A great fish boil that combines traditional Door County methods with Cajun flavors. Having been to at least a dozen fish boils, the fresh fish is great but often quite bland. Come to Kettle Black for a Cajun fish boil instead! My new go-to fish boil place in DoCo - will be recommending to all my friends who visit.

I’ve grown up attending Door County fish boils and the cajun fish boil here was the tastiest. Sizable fish portions, perfectly seasoned sides. I’d love to see them source the pie from Wood Orchard or Not Licked Yet and if possible offer to debone the fish.
Excited to return next summer!

We were planning on going to a fish boil but discovered this Cajun shrimp boil and are glad we did. The presentation outside was excellent. The food (shrimp, potatoes, Brussel sprouts, andouille sausage, sweet potatoes, etc.) was all excellent. Our only regret was not getting the lobster tail. People next to us got it and it looked really good. Service is top notch and the chef/owner checks on every table personally. They have a nice beer and wine selection and the inside seating is very cozy. Highly recommend.

Wow—what an amazing night! The food was cooked to perfection, with portions that were just right. The entire environment was incredibly welcoming and immersive—it really made you feel like you were a part of something special for the evening.
One thing that really stood out: my wife loved it—even though she normally doesn't like fish! That speaks volumes about the quality and preparation of the dishes.
The food is traditionally cooked in salted water, staying true to historical methods, and it’s full of natural, comforting flavor. For those who enjoy a little extra kick, there’s a canister of fresh spices and a unique spiced sauce at the table—absolutely delicious and unlike anything I’ve had before.
To top it all off, they even include dessert, and the drinks are very reasonably priced. Highly recommended!

This place is amazing! I work in hospitality and have had the pleasure to dine at some great top of the line restaurants and I place this in my top 5 experiences. The building is updated with an elegant modern feel. The experience was great from start to finish. We were greeted and told about the dining experience, then we had the pleasure of experiencing a “traditional fish boil” but with a Cajun twist, with shrimp replacing the traditional white fish. The food was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The service and attention was nicely balanced. All this being said the thing that makes the experience is that the chef and owner Paul walks around the dining room and speaks to each table. This shows that he truly cares about each person’s dining experience and wants to be apart of the experience. This is big city dining with a personal small town feeling. I HIGHLY recommend visiting for a twist on the traditional Wisconsin fish boil.
PS- order the lobster with the Cajun boil, you won’t be disappointed.

We had the best time at Kettle Black Fish Boil. The food was delicious! We happened to visit on a cajun shrimp boil night and I'm so glad we did. I seriously could eat this meal every day of my life! The owners and entire staff were incredibly kind and clearly passionate about helping guests enjoy Door County. It felt like more of an experience than just a meal -- the owner/boil master is a great storyteller. We sat outside and enjoyed watching the sunset reflect over the water (it seemed like inside tables had a good view as well). Highly recommend. We tried two different boil-type places on our trip and this was our favorite.

This is a family business-and it shows. Great service. The shrimp boil was fantastic. We added the lobster, but not necessary. So much food and the seasoning was amazing. I have eaten the traditional whitefish boil & while this is more historical, the cajun shrimp boil tastes far better. Most of the seating has a water (marina harbor) view. Highly recommend.

Had the cajun shrimp and lobster boil. Normally not a huge fan of shell fish but was pleasantly surprised. The seasoning and broth were great. Owner takes a personal interest in your dinning experience, something you don’t always find in Door Cty, WI. We enjoyed this fish boil experience. We love the cornbread and the cajun sauce that they put out in every table. The shrimp was good but I think the broth that comes with it was salty. For parking, might need to park a couple blocks or more farther bc it can get very crowded, parking is street parking.

I dined at the Kettle Black restaurant in July 2024. They served up a Cajun shrimp boil which is what attracted me. The boil itself was fairly quick and enjoyable. My table was ready when the boil ended and I was served promptly and attentively. The corn muffins were like no others! So delicious. The boil consisted of Cajun shrimp, Brussels sprouts, potatoes, corn, andouille sausage, and lots more goodies. They have their own spice and their own remoulade, both of which I bought and took home. The atmosphere is casual elegance. The service was so attentive and comfortable. We're fish boil experts, been to several every summer. This was a new one for us. I liked the seasoning on everything (salt, pepper, and garlic) and how they had the Creole seasoning and sauce on the table. It was something different from the others. One thing I think they could improve on is the drink selection. They had a few beers from up here in Door County, but no local wines when there are so many wineries up here! I was looking forward to having a Door County wine with my fish, and hopefully can do that here next year. Update 2024: Still no Door County wines! And the Door County beers weren't on the beer list, which we thought was weird. Don't you think you'd want to support and highlight the local businesses?

It seems all the fish boils in Door County have their own sense of personality and flair that makes them distinct, and Kettle Black is no exception. The hominess of the restaurant is carried with a more chic modernity, while still embracing the salt-of-the-earth essence of the fish boil. The owner is friendly and charismatic, and the staff accommodating and attentive.
And the food - OH THE FOOD. Fish was perfect, ribs exquisite, and who would have thought the best cornbread I've had since high school would be in Wisconsin.
I'm still longing to try all the fish boils in the region, but I'd love to return for the Kettle Black Cajun boil, and imagine it will be hard to beat.

They told us to be at the place 7.10 .
So after check-in, you go outside and watch the pot boiling, that's it. For 1 hour and a half. Not enjoying sunset but sitting and watching pot boiling. So if you hungry not pleasant experience. After food was cooked, we waited inside until food arrived. The couple next to us eat for like 15 min, and we waited for our plate. Food is ok, sour, and spicy.

Disappointing experience. We did the 7:30 pm Cajun boil. There was no communication when we “checked in” on what to expect. We were only told what table to go to. When I flagged down a server to ask questions such as “when does the food come out?” - he had no idea. He said probably 15 min. We waited a full hour. We were finally told about 8 pm that they were running “a little late” and hopefully we “didn’t have other plans.” Wait staff was non existent. Food was fine. Shrimp and sausage had good flavor. Enjoyed the red potatoes, onion, and corn. Not sure about the sweet potato and Brussels sprouts. Would have preferred more of the regular stuff but that’s just personal preference. Surprised the normal fish boil comes with pie but this one doesn’t? We skipped it. I don’t think we will be returning. There are lots of other fish boil places that run on schedule and communicate how things work much more effectively.

Wonderful spot for a fish boil and better than the more touristy options in the area. This small restaurant serves traditional fish boils and cajun fish boils on alternating days. We arrived without a reservation just after one of their boils, and the owner and hostess were gracious enough to make room for us. We thought we’d be served leftovers, but the owner went outside and freshly boiled an order for us! We missed the official show but instead got to watch from the warm interior. Reservations are expected, don’t assume you’ll get lucky like we did.
The restaurant is really cute and clean. There is a lovely view over the harbor and the boiling kettle itself. As far as I’m aware, there is no menu and no options. If you’re there on a traditional or cajun night that is what you’re getting. They did have a nice variety of alcohol. The price was a bit high but fair for the experience and quality. The staff were only okay, but I thought their slight edge was fair given the end of an exhausting tourist season. The owner was very personable and took the time to help many patrons debone their fish.
The traditional fish boil is served with the fish itself, potatoes, a sweet onion, corn, coleslaw, and bread. The bread was pretty good. The meal looked simple when served but ended up being delicious. The fish had a good flavor to it and came from nearby waters. The potatoes were livened up by the melted butter. The owner makes his own cajun seasoning and sauce. The liberal application of both made the meal even better. The corn and sweet onion were great. The owner described the onion as taking on a candy-like flavor and he wasn’t wrong. The coleslaw was great (my companion described it as the best she’d ever had). This meal is a lot of work to eat given the inevitable picking of bones. Therefore it’s probably not a great first date spot, but very cute for couples who know one another and can deal with some fish bones. They served cherry pie for dessert, which was the weakest part of the meal. Overall this was a lovely experience.

The owners ran the whole place as well when we were there and were very nice.
It definitely goes on the list for a place to go back to.
They do have alternatives to fish/seafood but we did not have it.

Delicious fish boil. Beautiful atmosphere and great owners. You can watch the fish boil in the back while enjoying a glass of wine or beer. Relatively new restaurant has great potential. My only disappointment was the wait time on being served, which seemed to be longer than it should have as there was only one waitress running as fast as she could to serve the upstairs patrons first then the downstairs patrons last. If they had one waitress downstairs and one for upstairs I think that would fix the service issue.

This is the best fish boil in Door County! We had the traditional boil and the cajun boil and both were amazing! We had dinner here two nights in a row, that should tell you how good it is! Paul and his staff are the kindest people and really know how to make you enjoy every second of the experience. The restaurant is such a quaint atmosphere and the food presentation is a pure art! Watching the boil process is so cool and Paul gives you the full history of a good ole Door County fish boil! Make sure you stop in here and take in this wonderful experience! We cannot wait to come back next year!

Came here on a Friday night and had an awesome experience.
When we first walked in, we were greeted by Marcela. She is one of the nicest people I've encountered working in the service industry. She served us drinks and was incredibly friendly and personable. At one point in the night, two of us went back to order more drinks and we really enjoyed talking with her. It seemed like she wanted us to have a great experience and she gave us the option of sampling a few of the drinks before we ordered another one.
The fish boil was very entertaining and done by Paul (the owner). He was very knowledgeable and just a great guy. Kettle Black has been ran by his family for many years so he knows his stuff!
After the fish boil outside, we went in and ate in the upper level. The fish was delicious! It was served with red potatoes, corn, and coleslaw. I won't usually rave about coleslaw but theirs was so good. I think they add one of their sauces to it so it's got a lot of flavor. The sauces went well with the fish, especially the spicier one.
The service was great. Everything about this place was positive. The ambiance was super cozy and homey. It's location is also perfect- surrounded by cute little shops!
You must come here if you want to attend a fish boil while you're in Door County!!!

The Cajun boil was fantastic. It’s not to spicy but you can kick it up with several chef made sauces. Chef Paul runs a great operation and gives you insight into the boil and his family history. What a great experience! We chose the Cajun shrimp boil with the lobster add on. The boil master gave us an education about why the ingredients go in the order they do, and where he got the fancy paddle. Then the steaming bowl of delishness is brought to your table, along with yummy cornbread and butter. Dessert is Door County cherry pie a la mode, perfection!

I had dinner in a large group. I felt the $60 price for maybe a 4oz lobster and a half dozen shrimp was excessive. The staff and owner were good and tried to make the best of a disappointing experience. For what we ended up paying we could have dined at Wickman house or Waterfront and had a better experience. I won’t be back, sorry!

We had a 7:30 start cajan boil time. Was told running about 15 min. late. Finally got in and then sat around a large stock pot and listened to excuses of why thing were running late. We are approaching 8:30 with still no food service. We were hungry and tired so went inside as a watched pot is also boring without a good story. There was cornbread on the table and we ate it as we were hungry. We asked if we could get more once our food showed up was told that would be an extra charge. My boil point was starting to roll over the edges by then. Finally got our food at 9pm which was delicious but still weighing the cost of the time it took and being told the extra cornbread was a cost(should have be a courtesy at this point). The place was beautiful and wanted to find good but an hour and half wait time was a little much especially for the cost of our meal and extra charge for the cornbread.

We got two adult cajun boils and two kids ones.
First, with the positives - the food was tasty. The corn bread was probably the best I've ever had. The heat level was good for my husband and myself.
However, I was told the spice wouldn't be bad for my kids, but they could barely get it down. I would recommend getting kids something else on the menu unless they are used to spicy food.
When we came for the boil, our kids were disappointed there was no boil over for the cajun boil. Just something to note if you come with kids, to set proper expectations.
Our main issue on this was the price point. We ate out at a different place all week in door county and this was by far our most expensive meal. The cherry pie was below par, and we were being rushed through eating because they had the next service coming soon. Our server tried to clear my bowl while I was still eating and had quite a bit still left. I understand needing to get through service, but for the price, I would expect a more welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. We paid for the experience and I want to enjoy it at my pace, and not be made to feel like an inconvenience to the staff.

Don't normally write reviews but had to after this meal. This was the best meal we had on our trip to Door County! The Cajun boil was fabulous. It's a family owned restaurant, and the owners were so friendly. We had our 10 month old with us and they were so accommodating and kind about us staying a bit longer to finish eating. Star ratings. 1 bad. 2 below average. 3 average / neutral. 4 good. 5 excellent.
Cajun boil and lobster boil are two different things. We assumed the cajun boil was a cajun lobster, but it was shrimp and andouille, so when our meals came out, it was a surprise. Would like to try again for "cajun lobster." Served in the broth. Would be great with some toast points. Standard cajun flavoring - variation of oldbay. Cornbread served ahead of the meal. Was still good, and the portions were great.
Service was a bit off, but they were down a chef so reasonable to be behind. (Note 730 seating). But they didn't really communicate that until they brought out food an hour after our seating.
Had a very hard time getting a hold of them to make the reservation. The number on Google / website doesn't pick up, and I received a text each time we called, saying I'll call you back. Left a vm to make a reservation and didn't receive a call back. Found a different number that connected.

Really good food, seemed like the best out of it, The Old Post Office, and Pelletier's. The old post office view is hard to beat if you're on the road side, and the Pelletier's boil over is the biggest, but having to stake your claim at a table that is leaving isn't something I look forward to at Pelletier's.
At Kettle Black, it's a smaller restaurant and you get good portions of fish and all the sides are delicious! The fish boil is great too! If you had to choose out of the three. This would definitely be my first choice. Great flowers out front for a family picture too.

Not Good!!!!!
Cajun boil lacked flavor and was very spicy (not mild as Paul says it is).
Cornbread was dry on edges from sitting out way too long.
Lobster tail was over cooked.
Ribs and chicken were very good.
Cajun boil experience does NOT include a boil over!!! And, Paul does nothing to make up for it. No energy or enthusiasm.
Paul failed to accommodate our group as promised. He also did not charge the price he quoted.
The worst part is that he did not take any responsibility for his mistake regarding the accommodations nor have any empathy for the situation that we were forced to handle because of it. His response was laced with comments in hopes for me to feel sorry for him because his reservation software was subpar and he has to help his team wash the dishes?!?

Our first trip to door county and everywhere you look you see fish boils. We found nothing sounded too appetizing about boiled fish but when in Rome right? We ended up having a fantastic meal and whole dining experience at Kettle Black. Whatever magic goes into that pot does it’s job fantastically. The entire meal was delicious. The owner/ Boilmaster spent much of the meal at our table entertaining us and our kids with local stories about the area and the meal and the personal touch he puts into everything shows through. Awesome meal! Truely amazing flavor and large portions. We were there for the Cajun shrimp boil. Couldn't get enough of the hot "sauce" (not the hottest one, but the milder one). The potatoes were perfect, the shrimp was tasty, the whole onions melted in the mouth, and the sausage was sweet and spicy. Even the broth was so mouth-watering that I had to drink my entire bowl at the end. The waiter was very conversational and responsive (even to our kid's requests). The chef made the cooking/boil presentation fun and visited our table personally after the meal. We had a large group and there was a great "upstairs" space that made the experience even more memorable. The host and chef even had time to chat as we left ... and the meal came with cherry pie!

My wife and I were absolutely amazed by our experience at the Kettle Black Cajun Shrimp and Lobster Boil on a Saturday night. It was a delightful departure from the traditional fish boil that Door County is famous for. The flavors were impeccably balanced, and the ingredients used were of the highest quality. The Shrimp and Lobster were cooked to perfection, but don’t forget to request Paul’s (The owner)’s “secret” spicy sauces- fantastic!
What truly stood out was Paul’s dedication to his establishment. He took great pride in personally engaging with his guests, passionately sharing the scientific intricacies behind his cooking methods. Additionally, he shared captivating stories of his upbringing in Door County, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Without a doubt, the Cajun Shrimp and Lobster Boil at Kettle Black is the best restaurant we have experienced in all of Door County. While the search for exceptional dining options can be challenging, with so many highly rated restaurants, Kettle Black truly deserves a 5-star rating not only within the county but anywhere in the world.
We're eagerly looking forward to our return visit, and not just because we accidentally left our sweaters behind. The fact that they took the initiative to personally call and remind us speaks volumes about their exceptional customer service. Kettle Black has won our hearts, and we can't wait to be back for another unforgettable dining experience.

My wife and I came to this place at the end of September, we tried both of their boils. They have the traditional Fish boil as well as a unique Cajun boil. Each type of boil is served on separate days. Both tasted so good, but the Cajun was a stand out. The flavor is delicious, a hint a spice, and a savory Cajun flavor from the boil masters recipe. You can definitely spice it up more if you like as the owner offers some sauces you can to flavor it up more if you like it that way. Both meals were wonderful and reccomend both highly.
We also have to say the restaurant it self is very classy and a little more upscale in our opinion then most places that offer fish boils. The owners however are very down to earth, kind and friendly, and very accommodating. We would like to thanks the owners Paul and his wife Marcella for their hospitality and delicious food. The staff also extremely nice and helpful, enjoyed being served by Andrew both days. Highly recommended and we will be definitely making a point to return and come back.

Watching a fish boil is a Very fun experience. Everything was great except my bigger turnoff was that the white fish was full of bones to navigate through. Maybe this is how most fish boils are, but we just weren't expecting so many bones

Went yesterday for a Cajun boil, they do require reservations in advance (can be same day) but should be part of any visit to Door County! For ~$30 a person you get 2.5ish great courses (cornbread, shrimp/chicken/or ribs, and cherry pie). Everything was super good, I think we decided it was moderately spicy even with their hottest sauce, but if you're really sensitive to spicy food it might not be for you, one of our friends was struggling. All of the staff is awesome too, we went on a slower day during the fall and the chef came out and chatted with everyone about the food and to make sure everyone was having a good time.

It was fun chatting with the chef about the fish boil and his experimentation into different spices and seasonings. I'm not a big fish eater though, so I requested the half chicken dinner when making my reservation and it was delicious!

Had a delicious fish boil there tonight. The location felt upscale, but comfortable, with a nice patio from which to watch the boil. Along with the butter standard, they had an array of Cajun seasonings and spices to add if you like. The chef was entertaining and the night was a blast. The staff were all very nice and attentive to all the refills and extras we could need. Highly recommend.
