This is a great place for eclectic and modern vibes. All the food is absolutely fresh, nothing frozen. Super delicious, and the server and bar tender were awesome. Try the the brisket and filet. Top notch. So great.

Ordered the loaded fries during the Monroe Street market without being told to the price, saw afterwards that I paid $19! 😧 I was then delivered a hardly filled boat with a huge glob of meat fat in the middle. Disappointed by the entire experience.

We had an absolutely amazing dinner at Kettle Black last night. It was a special event with items that, I believe, are not on the regular menu BUT… it really highlighted just how talented the head chef and staff really are. 5 stars is not enough! I’m not a foodie but the combinations of flavors and textures were incredible!

The wait staff were also amazing - the place was packed and it had to be stressful but it did not show.

I am definitely going back!

Kettle Black Kitchen is truly a hidden gem! We came in with a large group(with a reservation), and from the moment we walked through the door, the staff made us feel like family. The service was absolutely outstanding — warm, attentive, and genuine. As for the food, it somehow managed to be even better! Everyone in our group ordered something different, and every dish looked and tasted incredible. You can tell a lot of care goes into everything they do. I can’t recommend this spot highly enough — we can’t wait to come back!

Price is way too expensive for quality of food and atmosphere setting. Got the garganelli and it was extremely salty. Plating of all dishes felt lackluster, particularly for the pasta dishes. They were scooped into a small bowl, which made it feel like the frozen pasta I eat at home from Trader Joe’s, but 5x more expensive. Service was okay, there were only 3 other tables when we ordered but we waited 30+ minutes for food. After that, our dishes came out different times anyways.

We had early dinner reservations at 4:30. First customers there on a beautiful day outside. Ordered a couple of cocktails along with two shared items, biscuits and venison. Both were absolutely must haves. Don’t see Venison much on menus. Perfectly good. Great flavor.

Onto dinner. The salmon was just the right spice or heat. Our waitress informed us about the heat on it. We both thought it was just right. Not over the top. The pappardelle noodles were cooked perfectly. The flavor was soooo good. Excellent dish. Both were right up our alley.

The dessert was carrot cake and it was not super dense. It was light and delicious. Coconut. No raisins. I like raisins but my wife doesn’t. Happy middle ground. I don’t mind. Cake was perfect.

Great service and very attentive. Thank you

I’ve been in Madison for nearly 6 years now and this is hands down the best hidden gem I’ve found in city. The menu has a creative twist on classic entres and you can taste the passion in every bite. The managers and owners provide that comforting familiar family room atmosphere that’s rare to find. Whether you’re looking for a family meal or an elegant date night, this is the place to do it.

Had a great dinner with a friend on a random Wednesday evening. The weather was wild so we had the place to ourselves. The service was friendly, attentive and informative. We ordered 4 dishes to share and ended taking some home...cheddar biscuits, heirloom carrots, brisket empanadas and the pappardelle. Everything was delicious and my friend and I each had different favorite bites... the sign of well executed dishes that appeal to many! Will definitely be back to try more of the menu and a repeat of those carrots!

Oh my goodness! Can't say enough good things about Sarah and Christopher and crew. We recently held a private event for end-of- year company celebration. Sarah was open to working with food allergies and suggestions on apps and desserts. They personalized the menu and had fun with even personalizing the names of fun cocktails. We were very impressed with the attention to detail and little extras they provided to complement our event. In can be challenging to service 20+ people at the same time and the team pulled it off. Timing of the service kept everyone content and happy. And of course, the food a super delish and creative. Definitely will be back! Can't wait to check out brunch too.

Tried for first time for wife’s birthday dinner. Knocked it out of the park. Cocktails were delicious. Cheddar biscuits are legendary and a must have. Street corn so good. We had the Potato & Cheese Soup with Fried Chicken and the Duck Pot Pie. Both outstanding and savory. The fried chicken was a small breaded ball on top of the soup, would have been nice for a little more of that, but the soup itself is orgasmic! The carrot cake birthday surprise was a nice finish.

Such a great experience at Kettle Black Kitchen. I had a dinner event for 22 people and was looking for some place different and eclectic that offered a great vibe versus standard chain type restaurants. Kettle Black came as a recommendation from a friend, so when I met with Sara the owner as to what I wanted for this dinner, she was quick to say she could accommodate.
Given this was a dinner representing sales people from two different car brands (Acura & VW), the moment we walked in it was noticeable that Sara and her staff had gone above and beyond to impress. She had tiny little VW beetle cars and tiny little Acura matchbox cars on the tables. She designed a signature drink list around the different models of the cars. Ex. VW Atlas Orange Old Fashion, TLX Espresso Martini, ID Buzz Sour, to name a few. As far as the food goes... Amazing!
Faroe Island Salmon, Prime flat iron steak that was out of this world, Tortellini, arugula salad, along with the best Gluten free cake I have ever had. Lastly, the attention from Sara and her staff was right on point. Fantastic wait staff, chef and bartender. I cant hype Kettle Black Kitchen up enough. I will be back, I will tell everyone I know to check it out. They soon are offering Sunday brunch as well. I will definitely be in to check that out.
One more thing... they do a great job catering to Gluten free allergies. From starters, to main dish, to dessert. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Enjoyed dinner for two at Kettle. We loved the cheddar biscuits (10/10). The kielbasa entree (9/10) was delightful, one potential improvement that would make it a 10 for me would be a bit more potato since it was so delicious. The soup with fried chicken (8/10) was tasty but didn't wow us. The cacio e pepe (7/10) felt slightly like a miss for us, but still had good flavors. Overall, I'd recommend a stop for elevated fare that's good to share. 4.5/5 stars

We tried this place out last weekend bc we were intrigued : the menu is made of random cuisines that looked good- and the decor is a mix of reclaimed wood and painted floral teapots??
Pros: service was excellent, server was friendly and attentive. Arugula salad and smashie were great.
Con: cacio e Pepe flavor was excellent but noodles were undercooked. Not Al dente- but tough/hard. Server noticed I wasn’t enjoying it and took it back to get remade and it came out the exact same as it was before 😂

With so many good consistent restaurants in madison I don’t think it’s a MUST GO, but if you’re looking for a quirky place it might be for you!

This was a wonderful find. Didn't even know it was here, and we had such a great meal! Started with the cheddar biscuits, which were the perfect blend of sweet, savory and a tiny bit of spice. One of us got the kielbasa special that was outstanding. I had the black cod tortellini. just so good and flavorful. We got to try a dessert they were serving for the first time and it was good! It again was savory and sweet. The owner was very kind and we love going to family owned places. This is definitely on our list of places to return to!

I’m surprised to report that our experience was pretty meh. For the price (almost $40 for a lone pot pie) and the flavor (not much punch from my black cod ravioli) it was overall disappointing. My prickly pear margarita was good, but my partners maple sour was very acidic. The service was nice and attentive, and I think in hindsight tried to warn me about the black cod. We walked away feeling like “what did we spend $120 on?!” Which is never a great way to leave a restaurant.

I have dined at Kettle Black Kitchen three times since it was under new ownership, and it's become a favorite restaurant. Sara Anderson, the co-owner and Manager, impressively excels at customer service. Her friendliness and warmth make you feel welcome. Christopher Lund, the co-owner and Executive Chef, is a master of seasoning. His dishes are flavorful and delicious. A few dishes (See photos.) we recommend are Cheddar Biscuits, Duck Pot Pie, and Cacio e Pepe. The Bar Manager, Zach Vestal, makes excellent cocktails and helpfully greets customers. It is a family business with many people pitching in, and it works well. My husband and I highly recommend Kettle Black Kitchen.

This place is my new favorite spot in Madison. My wife and I came in on an idle Wednesday night, so it was nice and quiet. I will say the acoustics are very echo-y, so if I could make a suggestion, I would try to find a way to lessen the echo. Other than that, the food was so extremely good, the cocktails were great, and our server Jason was extremely kind and considerate. The dessert was also delectable. Two plates, three cocktails, and a dessert ran about $95. A *little* high on price you might say, but all things considered, it was well worth the price. I'm so glad we decided to come here, and we will definitely be back again.

I would not recommend this restaurant.  Despite having a reservation, my friend and I still had to wait half an hour for a table.  Our server did not acknowledge this and instead rushed us to order, failed to bring water, did not tell us about menu changes, visibly judged us for what we ordered, and then became condescending when—as the wait for a table had already disrupted our evening plans—we asked for a rough time estimate on our food.  No one asked us how the food was.  The manager was unapologetic when I informed them that our server had been rude.  The food itself was well-seasoned and had potential but was priced too highly considering the lackluster service.  I hope the restaurant can improve in this respect.

Let me start by saying that the pasta is truly phenomenal! 4 of us had pasta and also salmon. We shared the biscuits (nice and spicy) and the chicken meatballs (so good). Cocktails were delicious, and the carrot cake we shared for my birthday was yummy! Definitely check this restaurant out!

We very very pleased to discover this little gem on Monroe St. The service was exceptional, by one of the owners. Sara offered helpful suggestions, and checked on our meals just enough to be attentive but not intrusive. We ordered the small plates of arugula salad, chicken meatballs and empanadas to share. All were excellent. The meatballs and empanadas included light flavorful sauces with just a hint of spice. We were tickled to hear singing back in the kitchen and learned it was the Sous Chef, show must enjoy his work. Kettle Black Kitchen is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant. Stopped in excited about the new menu. Unfortunately, the interior has completely lost the charm of the original Kettle Black. It now feels like two styles that aren’t cohesive, and the wall art is a confusing choice. Another strike against the ambiance was the classic rock playlist. I don’t personally like classic rock and think that music in restaurants should be neutral, quiet, or both. My partner and I started with the arugula and endive salad. This felt like something you make when cleaning out the fridge. Just simply not cohesive enough. We also split the cheddar biscuits, which were the highlight of the meal. They were greasy but otherwise quite delicious. We also split the pork belly and grits. It was good flavor-wise, but my partner thought the grits were underdone. The dressed arugula on top didn’t quite go, but I understand the impulse to provide some contrast to a dish that is quite heavy. Overall it doesn’t stand out among the other Monroe Street options for ambiance, taste, or value.

We came to Kettle Black Kitchen for lunch. There was no one else in the restaurant and we waited for about 45 min, which was quite a while. However, once the food came all doubt we had about the quality of this eating establishment was erased. My daughter, and I tried this restaurant for the first time last night, and unfortunately were disappointed. The first issue we ran into (it could’ve been corrected, had I spoken up - so that’s on me) was that the table we were seated at was in the middle of the path where everyone walked through (servers and patrons going to the bathroom). It was a very narrow space, close to the bar, register station and another table, so it felt cramped, like the people passing by were constantly in our space. At some point, a server was carrying a large tray with glasses from the kitchen and it looked like he was going to bump into our table (he swiftly turned to the side and didn’t).
Also, my chair (which seemed cheaper looking and different from all the others) was super wobbly and it felt like it may fall apart.
Again - that’s something I could have requested a change for, so this is not a complaint, more of a feedback for management. Honestly, I don’t think that table should be placed there.
The second and much bigger issue was the meal my daughter had - the salmon. She is a good eater and rarely complains, but she could not finish it because it was not only overcooked, but one end was completely burned. So she ended up throwing away a good 1/4 of the already small portion.
My meal (the cod) was much better, although I would have preferred less butter, especially from a fine dining place, but overall - the taste was good and the fish was cooked well. We also ordered Brussel sprouts on the side, which were good, but over-salted (even for me, who eats a lot of salt) so my suggestion would be to use less salt and let the guests add it if they feel the need for.
The worst of it all was the reaction of the server, who asked us how everything was tasting.
My daughter serves herself, so she felt self-conscious and did not want to share her disappointment. I, however, thought that a genuine conversation (not so much a complaint) would be welcome for the benefit of the restaurant and the kitchen.
So my response was - the cod is delicious, but there is much more to be desired from the salmon. Our server’s answer: “Thanks for sharing”, turned his back and walked away.

I would like to give this restaurant another try, as the atmosphere and the news in general seemed good. But with all the other excellent places in town, I don’t think it will be any time soon.

The food was all over the map. Some of the dishes were decent while others were disappointingly bland (I'm looking at you broccoli and brussel sprouts). The coffee was like water but the pie was great! In retrospect, I think Kettle Black just doesn't know how to make good vegetable dishes because my meat-eating compatriots were pleased. Final note: a restaurant of this caliber shouldn't be using plastic takeaway containers.

New Edit: I have been back a handful of times and it has been a pleasure. This is the best restaurant in Madison.

Edit: My best friend and I were back again, and I don't know how it's possible, but the experience was better! Fantastic food and wine - the steak melted in our mouth, the cod was buttery, and the garlic mushroom divine. The service was warm, kind and hospitable. The sour orange tart was magnificent - order it if it's on the menu! Can't wait to be back!

March experience: The owners are wonderful - warm, welcoming and friendly. The ambiance is airy, cozy comfortable. We were welcomed and seated even though we were early, when an extra guest joined in, they were courteously welcomed. The wine and food is absolutely amazing - perhaps the best I've had in Madison so far. The owner ALSO dealt with complicated receipts because we needed three different bills for food, sides and alcohol due to reimbursement reasons, and she did it with a smile. We all had a fantastic time, we loved it, and hope to return soon. Recommend wholeheartedly.

Our goal is to go to KB enough that they start to make our bourbon old fashioneds the moment we walk through the door. 😉 We will be back (and often!).

We started with the shrimp and grit cake appetizer that was really good and had the bonus of bacon on top. Yum. I had the cod which was cooked and seasoned to perfection. So so good! Such a lovely cozy restaurant with high quality, delicious dishes! It was so yummy I had to go two nights in a row; once with my mom, and I brought my boyfriend back the next night. I love the flat iron steak and their mashed potatoes. The flourless chocolate cake was also amazing! The atmosphere is really warm and cozy as it’s a small place with ~10 tables.

Awesome food, quaint atmosphere and I’m sure it will only get better now that they have a full liquor license! Get in now before it gets too popular!

The pork and iron steak were our amazing entrees.

The shrimp and grits along with the oysters were phenomenal appetizers.

Definitely will be back!

An absolute gem of a place. The servers are attentive, detail oriented, and clearly like working here. And the food is superb. I got the ratatouille tart, oysters, shrimp & grits, grilled broccoli, and the bean escarole entre. Every plate shined; even the broccoli! Just go. You can thank me later.

Our appetizer was very good but our entree was not. I got the cod - delicious mushrooms but the cod and the potatoes were not very flavorful. My wife had the chicken with broccoli and mashed potatoes. The broccoli was too charred and the chicken was, like the cod, just okay. It was too expensive for the quality of the food.

Love this place! Wife and kids went to dinner on Fri at 530pm. Food is excellent - I had the flat iron steak, wife had cod, kid had pork and other kid had shrimp and grits. Every single item was fantastic. Great quality and cooked to perfection. Decor is kinda French country / shabby chic and very pleasant. My only (minor) suggestion would be to expand the non-alcoholic beer selection. Otherwise don't change a thing!!

Kettle Black has some good options. I’ve been hesitant to stray from the Shrimp and Grits cakes and the Flank Steak. They’re both just so good. The other menu options just seem less enticing overall, so when I go, I know what I’ll be getting. The wine list is good and they have a handful of beers and ciders. It’s a cozy spot with some beautiful plants.

I was honestly disappointed in the hosting at this restaurant. They are charging a premium price for their food, and we were not greeted by a host when entering, as the host preferred to carry on a conversation with other guests for several minutes instead. That combined with the food being just fine was not enough to convince me to return.

The restaurant has 7 entrées and for a 7pm reservation only had 4 left. For a starter I had the french onion soup. It was good, but the cheese did not have any flavor. They should use a more flavorful cheese. The flat iron steak for dinner was delicious, and was the only reason I gave this 3 stars instead of 2. The presentation of it was somewhat odd though because half the plate was bare. My poached pear for dessert was not warm and was a bit too hard. I also had to cut out some of the core. It fell flat for me. The decor was cute, but there was no music, so it felt somewhat dreary. The waitress was also not very friendly and I felt like she really didn't want to be there. It contributed to the overall lackluster environment. I won't go here again.

Got the French onion soup, roasted oysters and flat iron steak. All very bland and unimaginative. I had high hopes given the menu, but the best thing was the wine. Note that they do not sell liquor, and their beer selection is rather limited. For 100/person I’d go somewhere else.

Best overall dinner I’ve ever had in Madison. Feels reminiscent of small, niche restaurants in the French Quarter of New Orleans. If you’re patient and love good food, good wine, and good people making and serving it, then this place is for you. Atmosphere is relaxing and pleasant. Staff is knowledgeable and passionate. Food is quality and well prepared and the wine list and menu are well curated. I’m very excited to go back as soon as I can.

It is so nice when you try a new place and it exceeds expectations! Kettle Black is a charming, cozy restaurant with excellent, excellent food. We went early and it was almost empty, but filled up by the time we left. I had the pan seared cod with char-grilled broccoli and roasted red potatoes. The cod had a crisp delicious outside and cooked to perfection inside. The char-grilled broccoli was phenomenal and was so good I could have made it my main course. The potatoes were halved with a light delicious sauce. My wife and daughter had the chicken breast. Both said it was very good also.

The Escarole and Beans dish is a flavor explosion! It’s delicious and you absolutely don’t need to be a vegetarian to enjoy this. It brought me back to my trip to Italy where I had a similar dish in Sorrento, which was so good I ate it two days in a row. Kettle Black’s version is just as good, maybe even better. The restaurant is warm and beautifully decorated (we sat under a gorgeous chandelier). Lastly, the service is impeccable. I cannot wait to return.

I don’t write reviews… but it’s rare that I leave a restaurant and can’t stop talking about the meal we just ate. Every bite from start to finish was fantastic. We regret only ordering 8 wood fired oysters. I wish we would have ordered 8 each. So flavorful and well seasoned. The lamb chop special was perfectly charred and the figs and salad were a ideal pairing. As a table we were able to sample a few entrees and I can’t pick a favorite. The cod was buttery and I had to ask how he made the beurre blanc because it was so unique and had a wonderful depth of flavor. The flat iron steak was perfectly cooked and some of the best sweet potatoes I’ve ever had and the mushrooms were to die for. And we can’t forget about the pork shank- so tender! And the carrot purée was something I haven’t seen before and a great accompaniment to the pork. And last but not least, the desserts. We had to get one of each. The sour orange pie was the star of the show. Think of the best key lime pie you’ve had but with a hit of orange. Buttery and tart and a great finish to the meal. The poached pear was well spiced and the sauce under it was wonderfully bright. The flourless chocolate cake was dark and decadent. Not a bad bite was had and the chef/owner was so informative and blast to chat with over our dinner. Can’t recommend this charming restaurant enough.

Four of us went to this gem for dinner last Friday. The staff was as warm and attentive as one could hope for. We started with crisp, delicious house salads and the best French onion soup in the region. For entrees, two of us had the seared cod with mushrooms in vermouth sauce, the others the braised pork shank. These dishes were flavorful, aromatic, generous and satisfying. We finished with the flourless chocolate cake and the delightful trifle dessert, together with Brian's elegant coffee service. All of this in an intimate, beautifully decorated, warm setting. Kettle Black Kitchen has a very European vibe, and reminded me of those little, out of the way restaurants in Paris that are the best. Great experience!

I was so excited to try Kettle Black Kitchen, the menu looked creative, and well balanced. I most happy to see a flat iron steak on the menu. Arrived, had a fantastic bottle of wine and tried a few appetizers. The pate and french onion soup were fabulous appetizers. For dinner We ordered the pork shank and the flat iron steak. Everything came out looking wonderful, but it was all under seasoned and had lackluster flavor. We were very bummed. Took the pork shank home and then went down the street and had a second dinner.

Fun new discovery on Monroe street. Friends had been and highly recommend it. Love the space, simple and clean, yet cozy and private feeling. The menu is simple and very well prices. Was really surprised to see the vines were very reasonably priced, we had a lovely rose to kick things off. The pate and shrimp/grits was such a great way to start the party in our mouths! There is a nice smokey flavor with a tiny kick in those grits. The plate was a nice size, to some it might be small, but as an appetizer, it was perfect for 4 to share along with other apps. Had the steak and pork for the dinner. Left our plates polished. Steak was perfectly seared and cooked. Didn’t quite care for the sweet potatoes that came with it. In a way it’s a nice salty sweet combo, if your palate enjoys that. Had several deserts, they were alright. Not much of a sweets person, but my companions very much enjoyed them. Partial to affogato! Check this place out and enjoy it.

Honestly, that was some of the best food and nicest experiences I’ve had in a formal restaurant in a long time! The wife ran the front of the house and the hubby cooked - it was a heartfelt and nice dynamic! We are what I would consider “foodies” and eat many places, frequenting those that we grow to love. This is going to be one of those places for us! We had many things - house salad, shrimp and grits, pork shank, Hen and rice, sprouts, broccoli, escarole and beans, wine and fingerlings - and it was all to die for! Our party of 6 enjoyed every bite, every sip, every laugh and every moment. Highly recommend!
