First things first every ingredient is freshly made for your order. Best food quality never a single wilt in your lettuce. I’ve never been more happy at a Mexican restaurant that I’ve been coming to for over three years. It used to be Guadalajara Taqueria. They’re still great and honestly, my second best because they have the best chimichanga in town and their cactus but as a chef I can say this place never let me or my family down bothe are number one to me but I choose this one over small thing like steak being seasoned let’s not include the margarita that taqueria Guadalajara does not offer. It’s still here and has a new location Verona over three other places before them have failed and they have lasted more than three years. The tacos were $4.15 for more tortilla & onion then meat, im talking 8 SMALL cut pieces of tripe in each one, the kids nuggets were actually grilled chicken cut into pieces burnt to a crisp in the fryer, the fries were old & the pozole had 5 bones and 2 pieces of fat in the whole bowl w hominy. My son’s cheeseburger never came out. & I reminded him before he brang my taco salad out which was bearly edible. When I told him about pozole, he replied w “they’re pork ribs”. I don’t care what type of ribs they use. They had no meat on them, and they still tried to serve it to me. Overall the experience was pathetic. I cannot believe someone recommended this place to me.

I’ll start with the good. The chorizo taco was good. Now for the bad… The beans had good flavor but they seemed to come from a can as there was a bit of metal in them (photo). The pastor taco definitely tasted like carne asada and it lacked flavor. The chicken enchiladas were awful. The sauce was okay but the chicken was a chunk of what seemed to be boiled chicken without any seasoning and it was only in the middle of the shells. I have no idea how this restaurant has such high reviews.

We bought takeout from this hidden gem 😁💎. We've eaten at/from more Mexican restaurants than I can tell you because it is my favorite (and Bree's) kind of cooking. Some are better than others. This one is very good 😊👍.

The rice appears to have been cooked with green beans, carrots, and peas. I personally love this kind of rice. Warm, light, and fluffy... delicious 😋.

The steak 🥩 nachos were a joy, covered in a white cheese sauce, and loaded with guac 🥑 and sour cream on top...a popular pick at this restaurant.

My kids enjoyed the carne asada tacos. Simple, the way we like it, with cilantro, onions, and lime if you opt for those choices.

The green enchiladas reminded me of my mother's cooking... brought me back years. Wonderful 😊🙏👍.

My Wife and I Uber/eat from here while in recovery after delivering our first born child... it was delivered so fast the price was right and it tasted absolutely amazing. upon going home and coming back the next day for a doc appointment we decided to go dine in. Let me first start by saying service was excellent.Via Grub Hub.
Unfortunately, my quesadilla was a folded over flour tortilla that was more like a large soft taco with chicken and cheese. Worst quesadilla I’ve ever had in my life. The very small portion of rice, beans and salad were actually nice and fresh. Never had a dollop of sour cream on my salad before but I used it for the quesadilla. The guacamole was actually very good however, again a very small portion. The salsa actually tasted like ketchup with small tomatoes in it. This is pretty sad because I just realize this business is very close to my house but unfortunately I will not be going there.

Walked in to the Verona location (not listed on google) for carry out. Only one server, which is fine. They greeted me promptly and let me know they’d be with me shortly. I used to love this place, but as soon as there is an issue with your order, they blame it on you. I have now had two different order issues and each time the man answering the phone yelled at me/the other caller. One time he said I needed to call the delivery people to get this fixed, I gave him the benefit of the doubt thinking he was just having a bad day. So, we ordered from them again today, this time we were missing a whole meal and he yelled at my co-worker saying we are trying to steal from him.

If your idea of a Mexican restaurant is brightly painted furniture, pinatas hanging from the ceiling and velvet paintings on the wall, La Penca is not for you. If however you are looking for some of the best authentic Mexican food you will ever taste this place is definitely for you. The location is rather off the beaten path and the exterior appearance is nondescript and the interior is just a ordinary space with tables and chairs, but the service was excellent and the food outstanding. I had the Pollo Supreme and was surprised at the number of shrimp that was included along with the chicken. I don't expect to be back in Madison anytime soon but if I were I would definitely eat here again.

Maybe it was that they were on both walls and there was nowhere I could sit to look at anything but a screen. Still, the food was good and the servers nice, so I will probably get take-out here in future!

Phenomenal food. I'd give 6 stars if I could.

Place looks a little rough, no getting around that. But the faint smell of Bleach attests to my impression that everything is clean and well run. They're nailing the essentials: glasses and dishes are spotless, water is fresh and clear, etc.

The main even is the meat, and these folks are meat magicians. Carnitas, pastor, tinga, barbacoa ... this is how meat is supposed to be. Meat so good it makes you a little delirious.

It's not just the meat, though; rice and beans are solid, salad was at least acceptable, sauces are fantastic.

Seriously, the reviews on this place are legit and you know with the place looking like it does, the food is carrying that rating. This is 'hole in the wall' Mexican food executed at an extremely high level.

Very good soft chicken Tacos! Fresh, flavorful and ample fillings. The second menu item was delivered as a ground beef (instead of shredded beef) quesadilla with a liquid cheese sauce (not melted cheese topping). Although still a totally edible meal, just not what was ordered or expected.

Nice beer selection, all drinks seen being served looked refreshing and delicious.

It was very chilly inside, the outdoor temp was 37°, and inside felt like 50°. The ambiance is definitely "hole in the wall", but it was clean in appearance. Seating was adequate and in good repair. Tables, booths in the back dining room,, and an 8-10 bar stool counter in front with a few tables & booths in smaller front entrance dining area.

The cook and waitstaff know how to hustle, food was delivered within 12 minutes of ordering. The other large customer table showed the steamy hot bowls of some soups and sides of rice that were added. It looked and smelled wonderful.

Will definitely return! Small parking lot, shared with ajoining business, parking might be difficult at certain meal times.
