La Penca is a traditional Mexican restaurant in Verona off Verona Avenue. It's just across from Farm & Fleet.
I went there with some friends on a Saturday at lunchtime and was seated immediately. Someone quickly put quite abundant chips and salsa on our table and a waiter came by quickly to take our drink orders.
A while later after some other friends arrived, the waiter came by to take our orders. He was friendly, and just fast enough without making us feel rushed. When we finished our meal we were not pressured to leave.
I ordered the enchiladas rojas (enchiladas with red sauce). I asked for two chicken and one cheese enchilada and they accommodated me without any pushback.
My cheese enchilada was great. The cheese had real flavor. The chicken was a little disappointing. I think the chicken was a little overcooked because it was a bit tough. There wasn't much seasoning on the chicken either, so it was a bit bland.
The plate also included rice and beans which is always tasty.
If you're looking for a good solid Mexican restaurant in the Verona area you won't go far wrong with La Penca.

I really enjoy food there. It’s delicious. The team who works there is also awesome, they are nice and kind.
I have gone there with my husband and my kid and they also care about my little one. They were so kind and they worried about my kid to be comfortable while we were waiting for the food.
Another thing that I have to highlight is the take out option. I have ordered online a couple of times and they care about how their food gets to the client’s home. It looks great and it’s delicious.

We had catering from La Penca for my 18 year old’s highschool grad party. The owner, Jesus delivered and set up on my modest back porch. I did not have a lot of space to work with, but he was very open and willing to work with me. He brought everything needed to serve and display the food while keeping it warm all day long. All I needed were the tables to put the food on. And when I tell you the food was a hit!! Everyone loved it and asked where it was from. So I asked him to bring a menu to display. We accommodated carnivore, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and pescatarian diets. It is truly the best authentic Mexican food I’ve ever had! I asked him why the shrimp is so good, and he explained to me how he doesn’t just buy the cheapest shrimp for his restaurant, but he gets the quality shrimp, that are larger. Haha, it’s just so good. And the meat eaters loved the steak and chicken!

We had a full fajita and taco bar with everything from steak, chicken, shrimp, beans, rice, mixed California seasoned veggies, fajita peppers, and every topping you can imagine. He provided more than enough food, and I could not have been more pleased with the experience from the initial meeting to pickup of the serving pans.

The restaurant menu has really flavorful vegetarian and pescatarian options as well. Which is not always easy to find! 10/10 my favorite Mexican restaurant, and Jesus the owner just makes it that much more fantastic ❤️

Got Lunch #3 - Chicken Taco/Enchilada to go. Asked for a bit more spice on the Enchilada - It was saucy, the tortilla flavors shined through authentically, and the flavors came together with perfection!

Taco was also really good even if you could tell the spice was made for the Verona, WI demographic.

Rice and Beans were A+.

It came out to about 10.50 with chips and salsa.

My first time here. Heard it was a good place to eat. Place was kinda dumpy. Booths had big tears and the table top had kind of a tacky feel. Got a chicken burritos. Wanted to like this place but it didn’t happen. Chips and salsa were clearly store bought, guacamole was tasteless and frozen in the middle. Chicken was tasteless. Rice was overly wet and the beans were pale and runny.

Felt more like a margarita bar that decided to serve food on a whim. I’ve had better Mexican food at Taco Bell.

I saw the reviews, so I gave it a shot. Let me start with the fact that I was pretty hungry to begin with, and I'm a foodie. I sat down here during slow hours (~7pm on a Monday) with no expectations. Within 60 seconds I had my water (no ice) in front of me, with the chips and the queso (I requested the queso). Within another minute someone was ready to take my order. I asked for their opinion and they said the burrito diablo. Less than 10 full minutes from walking in elapsed before my food was given to me. Now, as a person, I'm chronically online- always. I scroll through my meals 95+% of the time. While I ate this burrito, I forgot my phone and the Internet existed altogether. I had only one mission: eat this food for all it is worth. And I did. Before I could finish a handful of chips after the burrito, they kindly brought the check over and made sure I enjoyed the meal. Total cost for the burrito diablo + side of queso (queso is typically supposed to be shared): $22.30. The service was great, the food was phenomenal, and I certainly wouldn't get my food faster at any other restaurant. 10/10, I'll be going here for my birthday

All you need to know about this place is that they almost surely microwave their food. I ordered the tamales and they were nearly frozen in the middle. It was comparable to something off of a bad episode of Kitchen Nightmares. I ordered over the phone was told the food would be ready in 20min. I got there 25min from when i called and literally waited 35 min for my food. When i got home i noticed they gave salsa instead of the sauce. When i was at the resturant I had asked multiple times when my food was going to be done and the time kept being pushed back. Check your receipt. None of the prices on the menu are the same as what will be on your receipt. For some reason, everything had a .20 - to .70-cent extra charge, even alcoholic drinks. And they still charged me tax. It's very weird with no explanation from the server. Also, the server never told us it was $5 extra for steak when they asked what meat I wanted. The wife ordered steak fajitas, which were cheaper. She had 10 times the amount of steak they put in the chimichangas. Very little meat for a $5 up charge. The food was good but not any better than other Mexican restaurants around the area. Would much rather go to El Charro or El lmperio when in the area because I know what the price is going to be. Also, Place wasn't very busy for the time of day we were there. Too bad I will not be returning. I like to support different establishments.

If there's one thing I love about a good restaurant, it's the ability to come back months down the road, and get the same service you got the first time you were there. Instead of being by myself, I brought my dad, in the look on his face when he tried the salsa, and then the Mexican rice, and then his tamale was priceless. I don't think I've ever seen this man have such an overwhelmingly positive reaction to good food.

Out of every Mexican restaurant in Verona, and I would argue this side of Madison, La Penca is the best. You've got fresh San marzano tomato salsa, warm, flaky tortilla chips, and really good entrees. I've had proper Tex Mex in the time I spent down in Texas, and this is my second favorite Mexican restaurant that I've ever been to.

If you're in Verona, and you want Mexican food, La Penca should be your place to go. Great food, great place, great service. It can't get any better than this.

Love this place and cannot understand why they aren't packed 24/7. I get the Hawaiian fajitas every time because they are delicious. The sweetness of the pineapple is startling and Wonderful. We were in town for a family reunion and decided, last-minute, to find a Mexican Restaurant that could accommodate our party of 10. The last 2 times I have ordered the burrito Diabla with steak and chorizo. I'll probably order it every time because it's amazing. Definitely recommend this place. And I'm a foodie and very picky.

I was the only customer in the restaurant at 4:30 on a Tuesday afternoon.
Food was hot, delicious, and served promptly.
The server was very nice, had a pleasant conversation with me about the amazing red hot sauce.
I had the carnitas plate. It was exactly as expected - lightly crisped, yet still moist, served with blisteringly hot corn tortillas (seriously, if your hands aren't made of asbestos, let them cool for a bit before trying to handle them.)
Sides were awesome. Chips were served warm.
I have not a single complaint about my visit.

Best Mexican food in the area combine Madison and Verona. We got the welcoming fresh fried tortillas ships served with house special sauce. Got the second one without even have to ask. We ordered Canitas Plate and Carne Asada. Everything cooked perfectly. My grilled jalapeño is welled care for. Corn and flour tortillas are freshly made. I am not a tortillas person but this place change my mind. I will bring our friends back here soon.

I really wanted to love this place, but this might be the worst Mexican food I’ve ever had. The red sauce tasted rancid. The taco, burrito, enchilada, and tostada were incredibly bland. The beans were runny and tasted like cream.

Although he was very kind, after giving us our food, the server never came out to check on us. We finally went inside to ask to pay. It was very disappointing. I always want a locally owned establishment to do well, so hope some improvements are made. Given all the positive reviews, maybe we were just there on a bad day for the restaurant.

Chips were freshly made. All salsas and sauces were tasty. Ask for the hot (green) and super hot (red) sauces, both had depth of flavor in addition to being spicier

My wife really enjoyed her tamale.

Our server Jose was great. This is our new favorite Mexican restaurant in Verona

My only complaint is that the margaritas are from a mix, but it still tasted better than other local places also serving a mix

I would give 3.5 stars if I could. Very friendly staff. Cozy atmosphere. The refried beans were runny, and there wasn't much cheese in my burrito. My friend, who loves Mexican food, said the sauce on her enchilada was weird. It did look different from what I normally see. Maybe from a different part of Mexico than we have tried before? I would give the food another chance though.

We tried La Penca for the first time last night. It was so good! I hade the chicken mole enchiladas and they were devine. The beans were to die for. The chips were so good. Light and airy and crunchy. Great service and awesome atmosphere. I think this is my new Mexican food favorite along with El Jalapeno. We went at night and their sign is not lit up so it is a little hard to find. But worth it!

First time for lunch. Had Burrito Diablo with chicken chorizo. It was excellent with just enough spice. Not bland. Even the ice tea was flavorful. Service was also great. Overall a pleasant experience and good value.

A new arrival in Verona, and a most welcome one! They're a little hard to spot in the evening (they've got a banner up but no illuminated sign yet). The food was delicious! The home-made hot sauce was absolutely fantastic, and our entrees (carnitas dinner, chimichnga, cheese enchiladas) were all phenomenal. The carnitas were incredibly flavorful and tender, and the salsa verde on the enchiladas was a perfect contrast to the cheese filling. The service was great as well -- friendly, welcoming, and attentive. We will definitely be back!

If you want Mexican food in Verona, go here. I love the park street location so was very happy to see one opened here. Most of the “Mexican” restaurants in Verona are borderline disgusting and as far from authentic as possible. Glad to see there’s an option for good Mexican food without having to drive to Madison.
