My husband and I journeyed to La Cross after hearing recommendations to visit La Cave & The Chateau- both owned by the same people and located in the same stunning vintage house. We started our evening at La Cave and had a marvelous time enjoying custom cocktails. Then we ventured upstairs to The Chateau where we enjoyed delicious French-inspired cuisine. The beautifully decorated rooms enhanced the dinning experience and each bite left us wanting more. Highly recommend!

Will not return....food was under-seasoned (soup tasted like old onion juice capped with a glob of goo), over cooked (steak was dry and tasteless), poorly portioned (small square of bass with thin tasteless sauce). Even the bread was mediocre! What a poor excuse for French cuisine. Total waste of our time and money

Visited for our anniversary dinner. The staff recognized the event but I was surprised they didn't off a dessert as a congrats and thank you.

We have not had much "classic French food" so we didn't know what to expect. We ordered two appetizers and two entrees. The smoked salmon app didn't seem to have any smoked flavor so that was odd. The French onion soup was good, but not what I expected.

My wife had the salade nicoise, she enjoyed that. I had the steak with fries (it still seems strange to write it) we added on shrimp and lobster and all of these items were cooked really well.

I don't use a lot of steak sauce but thinking the French are the sauce kings I inquired. The kitchen made me something on the spot. They should bottle it.

As for desserts, those were a home run. I had the French Silk Pie cake and it was amazing with their French pressed coffee.

We were allowed to explore the house and it was fun to see. What a place. A masterpiece of construction. It's amazing people could do this level of detailed work way back when.

Definitely recommended.

In my opinion, Ostin the bar manager at Le Chateau is one of, if not the best bartenders in lacrosse. He has consistently made some of the best cocktails I've ever had every time I visit

Food was great , typical French.
Starters are somewhat small.
Main dishes were nicely served, the duck was amazing, fish and pasta too.
Service was very slow perhaps because we were the last customers at 8 ..?
But overall a nice experience and good food, the place is quite nice as well.

We had the best time at Le Chateau. We made a point to try all kinds of apps and entrees, and everything was delicious. One of the owners, Eva, served us and was so kind and helpful in helping us choose what to order. Can’t say enough good things!

My fiance and I made a reservation for 6:30. We walked around and looked at the place and it’s utterly gorgeous. We stopped over to the hostess and got in early.

My fiance ordered the duck to well done, no bacon, and I ordered the bass. Unfortunately they were out of the bass. So I got the lobster. We waited about 45 minutes and got a couple drinks and appetizers. We then waited for another hour to get our main dishes due to a mess up with another table.

Lobster risotto looked and tasted amazing. Her dish unfortunately was full of bacon. The waitress was nice, apologetic and sent it back. It comes back out 5 minutes later still with scraps of bacon and medium rare.

Bill was 100 bucks for my fiance to not get anything more than an appetizer and 2 hours of wait. Beautiful looking food, apologetic waitress but utterly terrible experience due to the wait and food not being made as we ordered.

First time here and the ambiance was Amazing! The bar downstairs in the "cave" was really neat, there's plenty of room to sit with friends. We toured the home while we waited for our food. The waitress and staff were friendly, the drinks were delicious and the food was ok. My fish was too salty but I still ate it all. My wife was not happy with her scallops, the noodles were bland and mushy.

We went for dinner last nite with another couple . The Cave and the Bar Manager awesome !! Our friends ordered rib eye he said it was dry and mediocre at best , his wife ordered the duck and she said it was ok . My husband ordered the scallops and pasta , he said just was ok . I ordered the duck and was told it would be medium rare . It’s not !!!!! Well done and you know if you like duck, it should not be well done . She came out to check on us and I asked her , Does that look medium rare to you ? She Admitted it was not . Didn’t ask me if I wanted it replaced . When she came back to collect plates, she could see that I didn’t eat a bite of it . Was still on my plate never asked me if I wanted a different dinner never offered to take it off my bill Nothing. . I would think a professional server would notice that nothing was eaten and would’ve offered to take it off my bill. But not at this Establishment!

I wonder what this place was like early on in its history? I feel like something has shifted in its quality in recent times. If you go, just do the cave. The bar is amazing and the atmosphere of that is a delight. We made a reservation for dinner in the restaurant (not an easy task. You can’t book online and they don’t seem to consistently answer their phones). It didn’t really seem like we needed to have made the reservation as we were two of maybe six people there. The restaurant is beautiful but empty and so quiet normal conversation felt uncomfortable. I really enjoy foie gras so I was so excited to see it on their menu. I was disappointed to get a severely seared chicken liver on a charred crostini. Duroc pork sounded amazing, but I could smell the charred bbq sauce on it before it got set in front of me. It was indeed burnt on the bottom of the chop and the chop itself was tough and flavorless. It was the first time I have ever sent anything back to a kitchen. I hated to do it but when you’re charging $42 for what was supposed to be a duroc pork chop, expectations are high. This missed the mark entirely. My husband’s duck was fine. Not great, just fine. After sending the chop back the manager came to ask what was wrong and argued about whether or not they felt like it was burned. She confronted my husband when he expressed his lack luster opinion of the duck. To try to make things right we were offered desert. Fine. Let’s do the crème brûlée (cue the snarky comment about how there will be something burned on that just so I am aware before it comes out of the kitchen). Pretty sure we got vanilla pudding that had been dressed up with brûlée’d sugar on top. It was thoroughly meh. Despite the snark they did take the chop off our bill. I wasn’t expecting that to happen and did not ask for that so it was a nice gesture. I really wish this place was what other reviews made it seem like it could be. Maybe it was once but the quality must have slipped as of late. It’s really a shame. Go for the bar though, that was absolutely stellar and made we wish we hadn’t bothered with the other part of the business at all. Maybe the bar food menu would have been more enjoyable. Who knows.

My hubby hadn’t been here, and I had the most amazing experience with a large group last time, so I talked him into going. It was the most horrible experience! What happened?? We waited forever for our pork entree and came very cold. I was expecting a hot meal. It was dry and tough. I told the waitress. She came back with a very small piece, some kind of sauce on the bottom of the plate 2 very skinny asparagus Speers and no potatoes like was on my previous plateand it seemed like it has been microwaved. I noticed other guests who had their pork returned as well. We had 6pm reservations and didn’t get out of there until after 9pm. I went to bed hungry. My husband said he will never go there again. There was no apologies about the food and no asking even how it was. Super disappointed. A huge fail. We won’t be back.

I have not actually been to Le Chateau, however, I recently attended a foster care panel at Bethany Church. Le Chateau donated the food and their services to cater the event. They served a chicken dinner that was simply delicious. I was not aware of Le Chateau before this event, but I am looking forward to stopping in to the restaurant for another amazing meal. Thank you to Le Chateau for your generosity for donating your services for this event.

Backdrop to restaurant is spectacular. Servers were very young and inattentive and claimed the chef would yell at them if we did not order out entrees with our starters. Scallops were overtaken by salt and the pasta served on was mush and also heavily salted. The steaks were fine according to those whom I was with. But ... likely will not go back.

My husband and I went there for date night on 2/3/24. We had a cocktail in the Le Cave before heading up to our reservation. Bartenders there were amazing! We were seated right away and our server was very attentive. We ordered escargot, Lobster Risotto, and Dry Aged Pork. Each dish was amazing. Service was not slow, but great timing for the restaurant. It’s our 3rd time eating here. My husband’s pork was the best pork either of us had ever had.

We were traveling in the area and intentionally timed it so that we could have dinner here (prior positive experience years ago).
The building is beautiful and the server was nice- the dinner was abysmal. I can’t remember when I had a dinner this terrible. We ordered French onion soup, salad, ribeye steak, lobster tail and shrimp.
When the soup came my husband said ‘this is not a good sign’. It had hotspots (microwaved?) tepid overall, no cheese, poor flavor. Salad was fine. The bread was smashed and both cut side were dried out like the bread had been cut hours prior, and just sat getting stale.
When our dinner came, my husband dug into the lobster and I started with the vegetables . The lobster still had ice in the center and the accompanying butter was cold.
My vegetables not only looked bad (no roasting, just blonde Brussels sprouts & potato) but tasted bad too. The sprouts were cold and the potato was hot but no seasoning. When the waitress stopped by, we told her we’re struggling already told about the issues she took the lobster and I said don’t worry about the brussels sprouts.
Next we started our steaks. Awful. My medium well steak was less than rare. My husbands med rare steak was also less then rare.
We told the server. She told the owner who instead of coming out asked that our plates be brought to him. Again, instead of coming out to speak to us he sent the server out to tell us that he felt the medium rare was medium rare, and acknowledged that the medium well was not to order.
Since everything was awful, and we felt dismissed by the owner we asked if we could simply pay what we needed to and leave. We were charged $70- and we left the server $20 since it was not her fault. Please keep in mind we were charged for awful food we did not eat. We were charged $70 for a glass of wine and a salad. I would even understand them charging us something more considering food was made albeit bad however to charge us $70 for food that was objectively awful and that we did not eat is terrible business. Shame on the owner for making that call and also for not having the decency to come out to see us. I may not get to lacrosse often but I am an alumni from there and my network does, so I’ll make sure to share our experience not just on Google.

I was very disappointed in my meal after having high expectations. My scallops were rubbery and gritty on a bed of pasta that had the consistency of wallpaper paste. The creme brulee was burnt tasting and overcooked. I've had this dessert before and know how it should look and taste. My son's roasted duck had a putrid smell to it and was a real turn off to him. I overheard people at the next table complaining about their food and even had a manager come to their table. However, our waiter was very nice and attentive and the inside of the restaurant is gorgeous. I hope this was a fluke, but I don't plan on finding out since I'll not be returning to dine there again.

We were very disappointed in our first & last meal here. The atmosphere is nice & the drinks were very good, but the service after we were seated was very, very poor. It was not busy & we are understanding if a restaurant is short staffed, but it took a long time to be waited on once we were seated and our waiter never checked on us in between dropping off our ordered items. The cheese board & French onion soup appetizers were very good and sadly the highlight of the entire meal. The steak was raw (we ordered medium) and the frites were so salty we couldn't even eat them. We told out waiter this and his response was ok, never an apology or anything.
We did have the steak boxed up because it was so expensive & we ended up cooking it at home the next morning.
We also got the creme brulle (our favorite dessert) and were pretty disappointed with that as well. It was not fresh...it seemed like it had been pulled out if the fridge/freezer as the fruit on top was still frozen.
We were very disappointed.

My husband and I finally went to Le Chateau last night after wanting to go for years. It is doubtful that we will ever return. It was very clear that the restaurant was understaffed, yet tables around us clearly got more attention than we did. It took 30 minutes after we were seated to get water and place our drink orders. Then we waited another 15 for them to arrive. Our appetizers (soup and salad) came out after being there an hour. They were good, but nothing special. The dinner arrived about 40 minutes after the appetizers. I had the lobster tail and part of it was tough and chewy. My husband loved his steak and said it was done just as he requested. The restaurant itself was charming, but the wall next to our table was splattered with something (possibly oil?) and the place was very warm. I have a vascular condition called Erythromelagia and my hands and feet flared up red hot. I would guess it was around 75 degrees in the room we were in…and very stuffy. We decided to leave without trying dessert. This was the first time we’d been on a date in several years, so to say it was disappointing would be an understatement.

WOW! We actually had drinks at Le Cave in le cellar of Le Chateau and it was charming and magnificent! The vibe was so classic and chill like a scene from a movie! The barkeep was a gentleman and a scholar; a true professional with great mixology skills and knowledge of the history of the house. He made a scene that was already magical, that much better. Our drinks were perfectly executed and we enjoyed them so much we returned the next night to do it all over again! This time we ordered small plates and discovered that you haven't had French onion soup until you've had it made by a French Chef with a very old recipe; it was fantastic! We then ventured upstairs to discover the magnificent architecture and fantastical interior design elements. The house is worth a visit just to see it; both the exterior and the interior. We will be returning as soon as possible!

My wife and I showed up at 6pm and went down to the cave to enjoy some well crafted cocktails after a long stressful day. Once arriving we sat at the bar. We asked the bartender about some drink options, but he never followed up, and never communicated a wait. There were no voiced expectations on how LONG it would take to get a drink. We sat for 25mins and didn’t even receive any water. My wife and I just walked out. We were willing to pay $10-$15 a drink, but when you feel forgotten, it ruins the whole experience. We did not even receive waters and they didn’t set any expectation it was going to take that long. They were moderately busy and minimal staff, however, at least communicate that. Extremely disappointed.

Foie gras pôélé “Au Bon Canard” as a appetizer, I had the Médaillon d’agneau, crumble de légumes, sauce orange-romarin (literally the best meal I have ever had in a restaurant) my dining partner had the Risotto au beurre de homard, edamame et radis pochés. We went here for the first time and it was an absolutely stunning house. We so enjoyed walking up and down the stairs and checking out the fine details of the home. The music played was quiet and relaxing classical music which we also enjoyed. Very different from the bar downstairs which was a bit more where you could use your normal voice volume and it had a relaxed atmosphere.

The meal started off well with drinks and great escargot. We so loved that appetizer.

Then we waited easily another full hour for our meal from there. Which was frustrating. I get it’s a French restaurant and “slow food” is the deal with French cuisine but it felt way longer than average even in a French restaurant. And it was pretty slow at the time.

The food came. Salmon and risotto was very well cooked, delicious and succulent.

The squid ink pasta was OK. They charged extra $19 for only two smaller scallops.

Overall I’d rate the experience 6/10

The wine was incredible, the craft cocktails in La Cave were fantastic, our appetizers (French onion soup and snails) were delicious, our mains (elk and duck) were perfectly portioned and cooked, and the desserts (lavender crème brûlée and a key lime tart) were literally the best we’ve had in our lives. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for a beautiful, cozy, and delicious fine dining experience.

Horrible experience. Was seated at 6pm, the waitress brought us wine. Then we did not see her for 15 mins. My wife then got a phone call at 17 mins, from our waitress asking us where we were. We were like “at the restaurant. Waiting to order our food.” The WOMAN WHO CALLED US WAS OUR WAITRESS AND HAD ALREADY BROUGHT US WINE. So she finally makes it back to our table so we can order and I ordered the ribeye with french fries medium rare. She brought me a fillet with some green vegetable that was mush and the steak was well done and then she proceeded to tell me that I ordered that. I HAVE NEVER ORDERED A fillet in my life.

Absolutely horrendous dining experience and will never ever return.

I went to happy hour at le cave and it was amazing! Our bartender made us custom drinks and was so friendly. The atmosphere is incredible in the lower bar. You feel like you went back in time to a French style speakeasy! I think what I love most is how casual OR fancy you can be in the downstairs bar. There are intimate spaces or room for a whole group. Highly recommend! Bring friends, significant others, and maybe even coworkers for a happy hour cocktail after work.

La Cave was phenomenal, bartenders phenomenal. Went upstairs for dinner, horrible. We had reservations and no one greeted us. We had to walk around to find someone. We finally sat at our table and waited 20 minutes for a server. Other tables were waiting to pay their bill, place an order , and waiting for food. We ended up leaving because there was no server.....you shouldn't have to paythese prices for poor service

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I was unimpressed with this place. I had been there once 10+ years ago and had fond memories of everything but my gf and I made a reservation for dinner last night and were both pretty underwhelmed.

The bread was served with butter; no oils or balsamic. Just very plain. I ordered a smoked old fashioned. It took ~20 minutes to get my drink after ordering it.

I had the French onion soup and the Elk loin, which I’d ordered med rare. When I received the soup, which took ~30 minutes to receive, while flavorful I think it was the last of the pot because there was maybe a 1/3rd of the cup filled and no cheese visible in the soup. The waitress kept apologizing for the delay in our food, which we waited an hour for. When we did receive our meals, there were maybe 3 bites of my elk that were med rare; the rest was medium or medium well. It was also lacking in flavor throughout and was very tough except for those 3 bites in the middle.

She had the lobster risotto with a side of lobster; the risotto was very plain tasting and didn’t have any chunks of lobster in it, so what makes it lobster risotto?? She also ordered wine with her meal, which was brought out late as well.

The salads were good, but a ~$180 meal with tip should leave us more satisfied than “mmm good salad” and I don’t mean that in a pretentious way; this was a special night out for us and the food was simply bland and overpriced, and there seemed to be a disconnect going on in the kitchen. I did let them know the elk was over cooked and my options were a) Chef can make a new one or b) Free desert.

To be honest we didn’t want to wait even longer at that point for anything else so both options were turned down. We got to the point where we just wanted to leave, which is crazy after spending that much on two meals. Either adjust your prices or adjust your kitchen, because this may be considered a 5 star establishment but certainly wasn’t a 5 star meal. I’ve had better dinners at supper clubs for half the cost.

My wife and I have come to visit La Crosse (my hometown) for years, and this was our first experience at Le Chateau. It was wonderful. The atmosphere is elegant. The simple, sophisticated menu is terrific. We started with a French martini and a smoked Manhattan, then the duck breast salad. Entrées were risotto with scallops and lamb Wellington. We shared a reasonably priced Bordeaux (La Croix) which was perfect. Our server was Stacey, a goodwill ambassador for Le Chateau and La Crosse. After a perfectly served meal, she offered us a tour of the building and narrated its history. What a delight. We are eager to return, and will do so until we have sampled everything on the menu at least once.

My husband and I decided to make reservations for a date night here. We weren't sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a really fun adventure. Our server, Hunter, offered us a tour of all 3 floors while we waited for our food since we were asking so many questions. He told us about some quick facts about the historic building and let us take a look around. He was very hospitable and was nice enough to take his time to chat with us and deal with our jokes. The scallops were delicious. The entrees were pretty simple, but were tasty. We thought the food was a bit over salted, but we will go again in the future to see if it was a one-off. Overall, the atmosphere was very romantic, and it felt like we were able to time travel for a few hours and enjoy each other's company. I had the 'Saint Jacques et Risotto au champignon et truffle' as a small plate, and then for our "Bigger Plates," we chose the 'Steak Frites' and the 'Steak d'élan avec ses légumes' (elk). You need to go down to the 'cave' bar and check out the bathroom. I wanted to take a picture, but you can just see for yourself!

Chef Ben is BOMB! We went for an early dinner to take our time and so glad we did. The peacock room was gorgeous to gather and share bites of all the amazing food we ordered. After dessert it was Le Cave for a few more cocktails. Sit at the bar, watch the bartenders work their magic and enjoy the show.
I'm making Le Chateau a regular on my schedule for sure. Go! You won't be disappointed!

Went here for champagne and foei gras and had a fabulous experience. We were there for happy hour and sat downstairs in The Cave. The foei, escargot and french fries were delicious (though the fries a little over salted). The staff is friendly and let us explore the property. I'm in love with the house and the story behind it. Wish I was staying longer so I can have dinner there.

Aubrey/Aubry, or however you spell it was the MOST WONDERFUL server ever!
I hope she understands how much she made my friends and I’s night. She had prompt service and was able to help us navigate the menu! Please ask for her when you decide to go. (I know I will ask for her!)
I hope she sees this too!
The food was extremely wonderful! The elk loin (MR) was amazing, as was both of the appetizers we got.(Charcuterie Board, and Duck Salad)
Please try as many desserts you can, if you have room!
Atmosphere inside was just beautiful! Please bring your family, friends, and/or anyone else you know!

Upscale French dining experience. The owner has a delightful French accent. The dining areas are small so you are never in a loud environment. The food was great. I had the Elk. So good! We had a pretty view of the back yard complete with flowers pool and fountain. The wine list was great. Not the usual poor wines that spend more on advertising than what goes in the bottle. We arrived early and went down to Le Cave for cocktails. The spiral stairs were fun. The craft cocktails were spectacular. This is a good choice if you want an experience more unique than most.
