Hands down Luke's has got the best cheese curds outside of the Northern Wisconsin State Fair in Chippewa Falls (where I grew up at) I was absolutely shocked when tried them for the first time thinking they were going to be like Culver's or some higher end fast food. To my delight ... I was wrong!

Imagine this: you’re holding a warm, golden cheese curd, fresh out of the fryer, still sizzling like it’s whispering secrets from dairy heaven. The outside—lightly crisped, a perfect shell of batter that crackles under your fingers. Not greasy, not heavy. Just... holy texture.

You bite in—and there it is. That sacred squeak. The sound of pure Wisconsin joy, the sonic proof that this curd hasn’t seen the inside of a refrigerator for more than a minute. The cheese stretches like slow lava, elastic and alive, then melts in your mouth like it’s giving up its life for your happiness.

The flavor hits next. A punch of cream and salt, the tang of fresh milk, the faintest hint of butter and nostalgia. It’s rich, but not cloying. Warm, but balanced. Every bite feels like a little rebellion against the cruel, cold universe—a tiny reminder that some human inventions actually justify our existence.

I went for the special yesterday, so Monday. It was one of my favorite sandwiches to get there it was the sloppy Joe with fries or chips and a drink. They offer an option for a meal that is under $10 on a daily basis. If there is ever a time when I'm not sure what I want the special is an easy choice.

We used to eat here quite often and always got the gyro meal. Though it's not off the spit it's pretty darn good. I decided to change it up and it wasn't may favorite. I got a chili cheese dog and it wasn't great. Hot dog was Luke warm and chili was bland. Not a lot of flavor all around. The staff is still very friendly and a cozy atmosphere. I'll just stick to my usual next time.

We order from here so much they know my husband the second he walks in the door. He feels like a local celebrity every time they see him and say he's there. I would give this 5 stars across the board except there's a huge difference between the day crew and the night crew. Tonight we ordered at 5pm. They weren't busy. They tried giving him the wrong order and when he told them it wasn't his order they tried telling him it was. There were 4 people on their phones behind the counter. I'm a restaurant manager myself, so I feel like maybe my expectations are quite high, but the phone situation is just too much. It's not just here, it's everywhere. This is not the first time we've had polar opposite experiences based on the different shifts.

The staff have started recognizing me and have my food ready to go for me the second I walk in. The food is delicious and more affordable than some of the other places around here. I placed a lunch order for my office staff by phone and it was packed and ready to pick up in 15 minutes. Luke's is always requested by our staff for lunchtime meetings at our office. Luke's menu is so varied that everyone at our office can find something that they like. I appreciate how easy it is to order and pickup. My personal favorite is the roasted turkey sandwich, it is so far superior to any other sandwich deli around and over the years it has never once disappointed me. It says they close at 7pm. Wife called at 6:18 and they confirmed they close at 7pm. She tried calling back at 6:29 to try to place an order for a turkey wrap and their phones were already giving busy signal (figured out later they were off so they don’t get any orders). We decided to drive there and just order it. When we got there at 640 lights were off and they were already throwing stuff away out back. My wife just wanted me to drive away without saying something but I couldn’t. I asked the kid throwing stuff away out back if they were closed 3 times as he’s ignoring me and the final time I said hello can you hear me? Are you guys closed and he said “yeah” and I said I thought you guys close at 7 and he said “it’s close enough”. You’ve got to be kidding me. Not sure if this is a management problem or what but this is the third time this has happened to my wife within a month where they were closing earlier than their hours said. You close at 7 then close at 7. If you want to leave earlier then change your hours!!! We were there within a reasonable time to make a single turkey wrap and a cup of potato salad. A message to the owner you better get things in line and not let these little boys get away with this without any consequences. These kids and the way the act reflects on your business that you worked hard to build. I wouldn’t let them ruin my name because they want to be lazy and get out of there earlier. They also need to learn what customer service is.

Basically came in because my friend was craving soup. She got the split pea & ham soup, said it was pretty good. We tried cheese curds; they were barely room temperature, so had to take them back to get hot ones. The hot curds were mushy, very small, and didn't even taste like cheese, basically little fried pieces of batter that was all soggy because they keep them under a heat lamp (not a good heat lamp either). I got a chicken bacon ranch wrap; not impressed at all. I took 2 bites, started feeling nauseous, just threw it away. I tried to eat it..... just blah. None of the staff smiled at all! I've not been there since it was Custards Last Stand, so probably like 20 years!...... no desire to ever go back. Not for me. My friend also agrees, unimpressed, won't be going back.

Absolutely LOVE Luke's deli! Every visit has been delicious, like a really good home cooked meal. We recently picked up dinner, and unfortunately we did not realize they close at 7pm. We walked in at 6:50pm. The staff, although actively cleaning up in preparation to close (we then noticed they were closing after ordering), they were extremely patient, friendly and maintained a great atmosphere. We left a plentiful tip after noticing, however, they all deserve so much more.

Damn, it's hit and miss with this place. You get what you pay for when you get it. Be there and 90% of the time it's right. Just check your bag on to go orders. Call it in and bet that's it will be cold with their time estimate. Being honest. Every place has it's good and bad. Two new very happy customers. Our kids ate at Luke's when they were in high school. Now we (as empty nesters) will dine here often. The turkey on any sammy is delicious. Fresh tortilla too. It is really cool, perfect size small the guys and girls taking orders are awesome.
I'm not a fan of their type of fies but the portions are big, I did have a phili cheese and beef I forgot to tell them no peppers so I just took them off.
I think it's a great idea to have plastic bottles of pop but I will say, for me, it was very EXPENSIVE $14 and some change. I came, I ate, and walked away full stomach but I won't be going back.

I got a Chicago hot dog that was delicious car cold like it was never cooked. It was cold in the middle. I got macaroni salad that was soup and the French fries were the Che cold raw like they were never cooked. I had to bring it home and take the hot dog apart with the fries. I had to put them in my air frier. The salad went in the garbage disposal. They had to have poured it in the cup that was tiny for the price. Higher price worse food. They used to have natural casing hot dogs when it was with the other owners. And they had cheddar cheese chunks in the Mac salad now it’s cheapest dogs they can buy and cheap sliced cheese.

Honestly used to love this place but now it's just another place that is only open because it used to be great. Ordered the turkey garlic wrap as usual, it tasted like long cut tuna or some sort of cat food. Upon opening the wrap to take out the onions there was a gnarly piece of green plastic inside. My brothers food had a giant chunk of burnt mystery wrapped up with his and I have felt ill all night since eating there. Prices are up and quality is down. I used to love this place a lot but for 15 bucks I could grab a rotisserie chicken, pack of tortillas and mix some garlic powder in mayo and have a higher quality dish than what I received.

Our family recently went to Lukes for lunch. The staff was courteous and our food came quickly, considering how busy they were. We sat at the counter and I was bumped by every person moving through the dining area behind me due to how crowded and close the seating was. I ordered cheese curds which were tasty and very good. Also, I had a Buffalo Wrap which was huge! It was supposed to have Frank's Hot Sauce and ranch dressing, I don't know if they forgot them or there was so little on it that I couldn't taste them, which a big part of the wrap. Unfortunately, the chicken strips were deep fried and there was more coating than chicken and tasted greasy. I could only eat half the wrap. We also ordered a turkey sandwich and turkey noodle soup. The sandwich was tasty and fresh, but the soup had only two noodles and literally NO turkey!! I'm sure they would have corrected these things had we brought it to their attention, but they were so busy that people were standing around waiting for seats and orders, so we chose to just leave. My previous visit was much better when I had a wonderful tuna sandwich and fries. With all the positives reviews, we were hoping for a better experience.

I’ve tried stopping by Luke’s four times over the last month. And I say “tried” because every visit is a gamble at this point. Is it even open when it says that it is? Is there seating or are all the tables put up and all the booths filled with kitchen supplies? If you actually make it to the point of ordering, will your order be right? No one knows, which I guess makes every trip to Luke’s an adventure, just not a fun one for anybody.

The first trip in the last month, the place was actually open, but I went in hoping for a nice sit down experience, but was met with a totally disheveled dining space, in the middle of their operational day, no less. Chairs were on tables and booths were used for storage. I still explicitly ordered a “for here” meal, at which point they handed me a to go bag (with the side of fries curiously absent) and sent me away. Clearly a place to take out and nothing else these days.

Second time, the order was actually correct, which I suppose was an improvement. However the dining space was still a mess, so I was very happy to actually order take out this time. Downside is, unlike when I ordered “for here” food, they didn’t give me a bag for my actual take out order, which made it quite the experience to drive home with.

3rd and 4th attempts to go get lunch here, I couldn’t even get in the door because they no longer have regular operating hours, and they will never post their real hours anywhere other than on their front door on a sticky note. Don’t check Google, don’t check Facebook, none of those hours are kept any longer it seems.

Luke’s food has always been good, but my patience is running thin with literally every other aspect of this business. I don’t want to roll the dice on whether the place is actually open and functional at normal business hours. I don’t want to have to have second and third options in mind every time because Luke’s operational health can’t be depended on.

I don’t usually leave reviews, much less poor ones, but four troubled experiences in as many weeks??? Would love to keep coming here, but I don’t want every order to come with a side of a frustrating headache.

My husband and I got food from here lastnight and it was our first time. I wanted a Chicago dog but they were out of hot dogs, no big deal. I ended up getting what was a very sad attempt at a gyro. The sauce tasted nothing like yogurt and cucumber it was bitter and tasted like vinegar. My husband got a chicken bacon ranch wrap which would've been fine if he got the crispy chicken he asked for. First time here and I ordered a gyro and sugar cookies. All to go. The gyro tasted ok. Not great but not bad. The pita it was in was so soggy it was actually wet and dripping. I understand tzatziki sauce can cause this so just a suggestion that maybe the sauce should be put on the side in a container for to go orders. As for the cookies. I was very disappointed that the woman bagging them said that all my frosting is going to stick to the paper and they are going to be a mess. I was excited about trying Luke's, I will start out by saying the food was good, and had alot of potential. My biggest issue was the lack of acknowledged service/ and the CLEANLINESS of the inside. Understand 100% nothing is gonna be perfect. But if you compare the picture from 3 years ago to how it was on 5-29-23. Night and day difference!!

Upon entering the doors, we had computers and paper work on the front bar area with absolutely no inviting spaces to sit. It just didn't give ya that inviting friendly place. The floors where WELL BEYOND even a fast vaccum, or sweep... I believe there where enough workers to send someone out to wipe a table or vaccum up a bit. Simply taking pride in your place of business that you work for. It was horrible to be honest. I don't even like saying that. But in hopes that it will get the right attention for the end result to be a better more inviting atmosphere, and maybe a little coaching on friendliness in counter staff and time management with the up keep of at the very least the inside where guest are eating. (Would not hurt to have them kids do a little touch up on some of things on the outside) 🙂

Talk about your tasteless gyro ,I would have been better off getting a packaged one from the grocery store .the meat was flat tasting and pita was mushy .overpriced for what it was .ended up taking it apart and cooking properly at home

Inconsistent, long wait and not fresh food. Sometimes you’ll get the best Italian beef you’ve ever had, sometimes you’ll get a bland mediocre sandwich and au jus. Every time you’ll get mildly warm, greasy fries, cheese curds or mozzarella sticks and every time you’ll wait at least 20 minutes for tepid fries.

Self serve deli No ice for the drinks (just bottles in a cooler) which is a deal breaker for me (sorry). Food was OK but it was our first time so not a lot of experience with different menu items. Old school hard booth seating. Took a while to get our food.

Absolutely love this place. You get a lot of food at a good price. I HIGHLY recommend the garlic chicken wrap or the kicked up honey garlic burger they are so good!!! The have kids items too and even helped specially cut my twins grilled cheese sandwich for us. So friendly, even at the pickup window

This building has house some classics since I was a kid in Janesville. So glad to see they have brought the roasted Turkey wraps back to full strength, used to get a Turkey Philly and it was amazing. The wraps are still a great value with their size and stuffing. It’s a place a stop whenever I come back to visit.

Luke's is a great place to go if you don't want the typical fast food menu. In the summer months, lunchtime is pretty busy, but that's because of the good food and the outdoor seating. It just makes for a great lunch during a busy workday! The rest of the year, they get busy but rarely do I have to wait to order. After placing your order, you can go grab a table, and they will let you know when it's ready. Great atmosphere. Traveler tip- this is one of those 'where the locals go' kind of places, if you are looking for something quick and decently priced. The menu states sub sandwiches (wraps) but these are not like other sub sandwich shops. For example, the turkey and garlic wrap I usually get is loaded with shredded turkey (not a little bit on top of lettuce!), cheese, and garlic sauce. It's definitely my go-to with fries. Try this place out if you haven't yet. I would recommend it!
