Been coming here for years. Sometimes a little slow to get in, but for good reason. This is the best bread in town! There’s a useful option to order ahead, which is good since they tend to sell out of bread. Also pretty good coffee and excellent baked goods. I love the cakes and the pastries are fabulously flaky and buttery. If you have time to stand through the line and sit in, their brunch menu is also delicious.

We ordered a $60 cake for my sister’s birthday, and unfortunately, it was handled very poorly. When we removed the cake out of its flimsy box, we saw the sides were damaged. The staff packaged it away from the counter, so we couldn’t even see how it was being prepared.

While the cake itself still tastes good, the packaging was terrible and ruined its appearance. If anyone else has received a cake in this condition, I encourage you to leave a review so they can improve their packaging process.

One of my sisters used to work in the Whole Foods bakery, and they actually switched from boxes to plastic containers after customers complained about similar issues. For the price we paid, we definitely deserve a partial refund.

Very cozy and cutesy place. Will update the review whenever I try their homemade bread but we got brunch (croque madam & roasted beef sandwich) and a carrot cake for dessert and everything was fresh and delicious.

Everything was absolutely perfect. Every bite we took was bursting with flavor, but this place didn’t just fill our stomachs—it warmed our hearts, too. Full points for greeting their furry friends at the door with water, and huge applause for the wonderful staff who care for all those beautiful plants. The open kitchen detail takes the experience to another level. Kudos to everyone involved!

First time here. Was in Madison, walking around and needed some brunch. Our friends had been here before and suggested that we stop. It was a Monday, and the place was busy. They have both seating inside and out. There is a good-sized courtyard out front with tables and umbrellas. Water for your pooch if they're along too. Inside are a couple of different areas for seating.

Was greeted by some very friendly staff. Gave us help and time to figure out our orders. My wife ordered the Boursin Cheese Omelet, and I got the Bacon Fig Toast. I got my London Fog Tea Latte (a little lavender, a little vanilla, extra foam) in a china mug. It looked like the pastries were going quickly, so we ordered a Chocolate Babka (for me) and a Salted Caramel Roll for her.

It didn't take long, and the beverages and food came out. The London Fog was very good. The Bacon Fig Toast was good—the toast was excellent—but I could have used less (thinner) bread. The omelet was perfectly made (not overcooked), and the Boursin cheese gave it great flavor.

Both pastries were very good. I thought the Babka was a little dry, so I used some butter (who doesn't like more butter) to spread on each piece—very decadent :)

An very good choice for a breakfast meal.

I don't know how, but they've somehow managed to stock their shelf with the clumsiest silverware in the known universe. Even when the end of the handle isn't jabbing you painfully, it feels like it's about to fly out of your hand whenever you use the fork to hold food while cutting with the knife.

Furthermore, I didn't even know it was possible for ham to be dry, but they've somehow managed!

Like many other bougie cafes, they don't know how to set up a table so that it doesn't rock all over the place and spill your coffee.

And to top it all off, they have the default on their POS machines set to a 20% tip for Culver's-level service. Nobody here is doing anything tippable and you want 20%? For dry ham, badly designed silverware, and a table less stable than our president, even after you stuff napkins under it? No. Just no.

Traveling in our RV and just had to stop for a bread loaf, a baked good and a cuppa. V delicious! Recently started baking my own sour dough bread and treated myself to two of their locally milled bags of flour. What a difference that made! Will now order this flour on-line.

Madison Sourdough has the best chocolate croissants—crispy, buttery, and packed with chocolate. Brunch is always on point, with tons of great vegetarian options. Everything’s super fresh and smells amazing the second you walk in.

The coffee’s excellent—like actual coffee shop quality, not just decent-for-a-bakery. The vibe is relaxed, bright, and welcoming, and even when it’s busy, the wait’s totally manageable. I'll be back 😊

My colleagues recommended Madison Sourdough while I was in town for business, and I enjoyed my experience so much that I went multiple times during the same trip! The bread and food here are worth the visit on their own — I tried the avocado toast, the Drew sandwich, the oatmeal cookie, and the cold brew, and everything was outstanding. Bread aside, the most memorable part of my visits was the kindness of the staff and how warm and inviting everyone was. I look forward to visiting here again during my next trip to Madison.

I like the bread and it worth paying for it. However I don’t like to go there on the weekends, the bread sold out at 11am which is crazy and the reason I am writing this review. This place and the people are awesome! The food is awesome and I highly recommend the pastries! It's a highlight for me to walk over, get a meal, sit down, and unwind.
Edit: disappointed in the lack of specifics. Thick is a subjective term. Thick cut toast to someone might be inch thick. Sourdough seems to have no set measurement. It seems to range anywhere from over an inch to third of a loaf. My first avocado toast had been a good height but now it's just absurd.

Essential bakery/coffee shop in the neighborhood. Great breads and possibly the best pies in town. I love having them so close by for a quick coffee shop visit, especially during the winter.

Coffee drinks and pastries could be better and tend to be hit-or-miss. But I love them for their pies.

This is one of my favorite bakeries in Madison! Their pastries are perfectly flaky & just the right amount of sweet. I’ve tried the cinnamon roll & pain suisse so far and loved both, especially like their cinnamon rolls bc they’re uniced and not overpowering-ly sweet. I also usually grab a latte any time I stop by, they’re pretty decent. Have yet to try any of their menu items/breakfast plates, but I might get one of those next time. Overall, love treating myself to a trip here (staff is super nice & atmosphere is also lovely).

This used to be our go-to spot for lunch, but we decided to try breakfast this time—and it was disappointing.

My wife ordered the avocado toast. Unfortunately, the avocado was more like an unflavored, processed green goo that barely tasted of avocado, and while the bread itself was good, it wasn’t toasted at all.

I ordered the croque madame, which turned out to be another letdown. The individual components were passable, but the execution fell short. The egg was tiny, and the portions of cheese and ham were barely enough for half a sandwich. Meanwhile, the bread slices were excessively thick—twice the normal size—and completely untoasted, leaving the sandwich dry. To top it off, I was served the crust end of the loaf, which made the sandwich even tougher to eat. I laughed when it arrived with a steak knife, but I soon realized I needed it. With so little filling, I was left chewing through a cold, dense piece of bread. Neither plate offered any texture or balance.

All in all, it was a substandard breakfast experience.

PS: The coffee was really good.

Wowwwwwwww. Came for a breakfast sandwich and grits at the recommendation of friends based in Madison. Enjoyed the sandwich (i had the biscuit sandwich - it comes with egg, bacon, & cheese & sauce, with salad on the side). They don’t offer grits anymore, which was a disappointment but everything else made up for it.

I also got the lavender lime spritz, which was a NA seltzer they make in-house. It was fresh & so good.

Left with house-milled flour, a homemade rye cosmic brownie, & a coffee to-go. You order at the counter and get a number. They’ve got a few areas to sit. Lots of light wood and natural light in the front. A bit more tight in the back. You bus your own table and they have to-go boxes & coffee cups near the bussing station. Will definitely be back. Oh, and the orange cardamom cake and the roasted veggie galette looked honestly unreal. Will get those next time!

We got a $60 custom cake and it was disappointing. My husband woke up early to surprise me with it and was really excited. It looked really pretty on the outside, with a chocolate glaze and florettes. When we cut it open, he was surprised to see that the cake was mostly chocolate, since that's not what he ordered. There was more chocolate buttercream than there was cake, and it was also completely surrounded by a half inch of buttercream. Basically it was a giant chunk of chocolate butter cream with a little bit of dry vanilla cake in the middle, and some raspberry jam. We were just sad that it wasn't tasty especially at $10 a slice. It feels more like an obligation to eat it as opposed to something we'll look forward to. Three stars because we've had pastries here before and they were good.

Madison Sourdough was an absolute dream to work with for our wedding! From the start, their team was professional, accommodating, and genuinely invested in making our wedding day special. The carrot cake they created was nothing short of perfection—moist, flavorful, and beautifully decorated. It quickly became a highlight of the evening, with guests raving about every bite!

The cake wasn’t just a dessert; it became a memorable part of our celebration that everyone loved and remembered. We’ve received so many compliments, and several of our friends and family have already asked where they can get their own! We’re excited to make Madison Sourdough a part of our anniversaries to come, and we can't wait to relive that wonderful experience with every bite. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for a cake that’s both delicious and a showstopper!

I had been to Sourdough before to pick up a cake I ordered that same morning (Thank you! it was delicious!), but I had never actually eaten there.

First off, bonus points for being open on a Monday morning and having vegan options available (a rare combination in Madison).
I ordered a house coffee, the Emma sandwich, and a veggie minestrone. Despite being busy, my food came out right away. The appeal here is that everything is fresh. The food tastes fresh, and that’s what you’re paying for; the quality. That said, the portion sizes were reasonable. The staff were polite in our limited interaction.

It was also great to have outdoor seating during this warm October.

Overall: great first experience.

Overall had a nice time and would come again. It was a bit pricey. For two sandwiches, two drinks and a slice of cake paid about 50$. thought the food was creative but didn't love my sandwich (the kats meow). However the quiche and the cornmeal cake sandwich were nice. My Ube latte didn't taste like l've much at all but the coffee was good and my parents blueberry lavender latte was lovely. The shining star of the whole thing was the peaches and cream cake. I would absolutely return but would probably go with a dish that highlights their bread more and is simple as that is obviously their strong point.

I can’t believe I only discovered Madison Sourdough last year after visiting Madison since 2014!
The cheese grits with eggs and pimento cheese are so addictive, I had it three time in one week last year. I can’t believe my favorite breakfast grits dish is from Wisconsin! Ask for extra scallions. It really helps brighten the dish but they’re skimping on it this year.
The baked goods are really good. The standout is the Kouign amann. It’s better than the ones I tasted in France, from Paris to Marseille.
The sourdough bread, as someone who used to live in San Francisco, was really good. Not quite as tangy as I wanted it to be, but better than many.

Having lived in the Midwest for the past year, it's always been a bit tricky to find a place that does both great pastries and coffee. It's usually one or the other. Madison Sourdough has got them both.

Visiting Madison for work, I found this place... and I'm glad I did. Friendly staff and welcoming industrial chic ambiance. I ordered a chocolate babka, a five-grain sourdough and a small cappucino. The prices were fair, and reflective of the quality of their products.

Everyone already raves about the pastries and bread (which I agree with, the babka was gone in a flash), but the cappuccino made my Australian heart sing.

Thank you Madison Sourdough, for a great start to my business trip. I wish I had been assigned to this city so that I could be a regular customer of yours.

Very welcoming atmosphere. I had the Ranchero pork sandwich. The most delicious, delectable sandwich I've ever had. The bread was perfect.

Awful mgmt and ownership. Cant imagine ever telling people to eat there. Lazy kitchen and the driest pastries you ever did see. 😘
And be aware of their soups, allegedly not vegan sometimes!

We can ALWAYS count on this spot to be fresh, delicious, and tasty! Can’t go wrong with ordering a croissant and a brunch dish. I often go for the Kat’s Meow and I’m obsessed. Grab the country batard to go - it’s unmatched!

Small local cafe with a wide variety of menu items for brunch and breakfast. Short wait times for food as short as 10 minutes for 7 people. The Bakers Breakfast was perfect with its sourdough bread, salad, eggs and ham. I highly recommend if you want a quick, cute, amazing cafe with nothing but the best staff. Thank you so much to Joey for the amazing experience

Madison Sourdough (MSD) is one of my favorite breakfast/lunch spots in Madison. Their breads, pastries, and meals are top notch, especially the turkey sandwich on sourdough -- it's been my go-to for the last year. MSD is usually packed, but the food usually comes out super quick. The environment is relaxed and casual, with a great outdoor patio for warm days.

Got lunch to go so we could eat in our car while charging. Had the grilled cheese and carrot soup, was delicious. Would've liked a jalapeno or something spicy to cut through the cheese, but it was still very good

Husband had the avocado toast with poached egg, he said it was also delicious.

I'll probably go back for a slice of the carrot cake before I leave town!

An update for August 2022: lately all salads, sandwiches and soups taste more acidic that is difficult to enjoy. Hopefully this will change.

Always a treat to be at Madison Sourdough. The quality is incomparable to any other places in Madison in my opinion. My favorite place for breakfast, lunch and meetings.

Update 11.02.2023 - absolutely delicious leek and potato soup, as well as grits with cheese. No sourness or over saltiness.

Still fairly new to the city and took the recommendation of a friend, saying it was one of the best brunch places in Madison. 100% right he was :) aside from delicious breakfast items, numerous options for pastries and artisanal breads are available. Not pictured is the blueberry danish i picked up day after and DEVOURED.

Yum!!! We had their sourdough bread at another cafe on state st and sought out the OG Madison Sourdough shop the very next day. Not only is their bread fantastic, but they have delicious meals! We had quiche, a biscuit w blackberry jam, cook’s breakfast, a molasses cookie. And walked out w a yummy loaf of bread. If we lived in town we’d come back at least once a week until we tried everything. Each dish we had was so well thought out down to the super tasty light vinaigrette salad. Very reasonably priced. Super friendly staff. Thanks Madison Sourdough!!!

Incredible! We stopped in today and were not disappointed. The staff was so friendly and helpful - we were between a few menu items and they took time to give great recommendations. The food was delicious and patio is so charming! Recs: PSL (maybe the best I’ve ever had), the cook’s breakfast, biscuits and gravy, and a chocolate almond croissant. *chefs kiss* we can’t wait to come back!

Went for breakfast today and loved every second! Very kid friendly space to view bakers in kitchen as well as the mill. Food was amazing. The croissants here are the best I've had in madison in the 29years that I have been here.

We were able to park in the I/O lot during their off hours so parking was also easy.

I was hopeful I might find a decent bakery, but their bread is below average. Seems like much more effort is put into aesthetics instead of the quality. Cinnamon roll was nothing special and the baguette seemed a bit stale. The croissants looked dry and sad. They’re charging premium for a substandard product.

Run, don’t walk here. The orange cardamom cake had me wishing I was a Madison native just so I could eat it every day. It might be the best slice of cake I’ve had in my life.

Booking my ticket right now so I can try it again and confirm. The chocolate espresso cake too. Don’t sleep on Madison Sourdough!

At busier times they need a dedicated line to simply just purchase products vs having to wait in line with customers waiting to be sat, went Sunday and after 15 minutes waiting in line outside , i then left due to this.

Staying in Madison, I was delighted to see a bakery near our hotel so we HAD to walk over and grab some goodies before we left for home.

The place has tons of seating inside and out and even though there was a bit of a line when we arrived, it moved quickly.

We picked up a sourdough baguette as well as a butter croissant, chocolate almond croissant, and baba ganoush danish, all to go.

Note: we had their Italian loaf the day before as we picked up sandwiches from Alimentari and it was some of the best bread I’ve ever had.

The sourdough was amazing, with a crispy and chewy exterior and the traditional pillowy, sour center. Yum! We ended up making crostini with some of it and it was fabulous!

We thought that the danish and the chocolate almond croissant were both slightly dry when we ate them several hours later, but the flaky, buttery layers on the butter croissant were fabulous!

These bakers clearly know what they are doing and I can’t wait to visit again.
