Wow!! What a great place for breakfast. The scrambles was delicious!! There was so much food I couldn't finish it and I can eat a lot of food , like a grizzly bear getting ready to hibernate!!!

I cannot RAVE more about what a fantastic place this is. Food - excellent. Atmosphere - Excellent. Service - some of the best I've had in year; kind, cheerful, polite, professional. You know a place is good when 15 minutes before opening, the street is lined with elderly men waiting in their cars for it to open.

Stopped by on a Thursday morning for breakfast. Very classic 50s diner atmosphere. It felt like home even thought it was my first visit. The food portions are huge and fair on price. Highly recommend!!!

easy going diner, tight seating but no issue with that cuz it means more seating. my steak and eggs meal had very fatty steak so less meat and more sinew and fat that was super chewy --skip this, not worth it. I plan to come back and have the scrambler or other traditional items.

Classic 40s dinner. They work hard to maintain a period place, from menus displayed that show a ham and cheese omelette for 65 cents. Great wait staff and good cooks. New go-to for us in Madison!

Breakfast oriented, the Scrambler is a load of chow. Good food, good service. Dining area and the seating is spartan - this is a college joint. Prices are very reasonable.

There was a long line for breakfast when I went, and for good reason: the food is excellent and the portions are almost obscenely generous. I was only able to visit once during my stay, but I would love to make a return visit in the near future. Those pancakes were incredible.

Always amazing...but this time...there was NO line! We got nearby street parking and that was also a plus. As there was no line, and we were waiting for the rest of our party to arrive the waiter started a conversation with us and we were able to share how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication to create the magic that happens on a weekend morning at Mickies Dairy Bar;)

Cute neighborhood diner, open since the 1940's, with classic breakfast and lunch offerings, in addition to specialty scrambles, and omelets, and pancakes.
The scramble was fantastic, but be prepared - the portions are enormous, and can be enough for a second meal! Also check to see if they're open, since they are routinely closed early in the week, and for several weeks during holidays/UW breaks.
Don't forget dessert: check out the shake/malt list, as there are usually 8+ flavors available, which can be mixed to suit your tastes!

Notorious classic, greasy spoon diner across Camp Randall Stadium. Always busy, always friendly and the food is always good. The fried pork chop plate is delicious and is wonderfully seasoned. The pancakes are thick and wholesome. A destination eatery when visiting Madison. Cash only.

When I first moved into the city, I was fully locked out of my apartment, and spent a whole night and morning waiting for a locksmith. After a rough morning finally getting moved in, I ran over to this place the hungriest I've ever been. Mickies was exactly what I needed: cheap, fast, and delicious food. By far the most healing meal I've ever had, and a very lovely introduction to the campus area.

The food was not good. They were extremely busy but we practically left our entire blt and Philly cheese steak whole. Bacon tasted off. The Philly cheese had little to no flavor even with jalapeños on there. Coffee was okay. Service was great though. Would I recommend it, probably not. But the locals seem to love it.

I went to Mickies Dairy Bar for brunch and honestly, it was a very disappointing experience. First off, there was a strong and unpleasant smell coming from the restroom—while I was eating. The restroom is located right next to several dining tables, which completely ruins the atmosphere and makes it hard to enjoy your food.

Even more frustrating was the lack of modern payment options. In the heart of Madison, I expected basic conveniences like credit card or Apple Pay, but they only accept cash or Venmo.

Awesome local place for a hearty breakfast. The pancakes are huge and the “scramble” was awesome: eggs, cheese, potatos, and your choice of meat. Cash only, but service was fast, frequent and friendly. BTW, the fried potatoes are called “yanks.” Never heard that term before, but if your food is this good for a fair price, you get to call it whatever you want.

Man, oh man, this joint is the cat’s pajamas when it comes to breakfast. The coffee? Hot, strong, and poured with a smile, just like it should be. You’ll want to keep the refills coming. Rather have OJ or something else? No worries, they got it covered.
Now, let’s talk about the grub. The pancakes? Fluffy perfection, stacked high and served with butter that melts just right. Breakfast potatoes aka “Yanks”are crispy on the outside, golden on the inside, exactly how the good folks up here like ‘em. Whether you’re after a classic egg-and-toast combo, omelette, or even steak & eggs, they’ve got it down to an art form.
The service is friendly (Anna is the BEST followed closely by Capri!), the portions are generous, and the atmosphere feels like home. No fuss, no frills—just solid, honest food made the way it ought to be. If you’re looking for a place where the morning starts off right, this is it!

Oh, what’s that, you’re more interested in lunch? Well, step right up and grab yourself a seat. From the moment you step inside, you’re transported straight to a sock hop of flavors. The booths are cozy, the bar is humming’, and the service is smoother than a drive down Highway 42.
The burgers? Outta sight! Juicy, stacked high, and served up with a side of crispy golden fries that’ll knock your bobby socks clean off. Rather have Grilled Cheese or a sandwich? Not a problem. And don’t even get me started on the shakes—thick, creamy, just like the good Lord intended.
The whole vibe here is like a blast from the past, where the coffee flows, the folks are friendly, and every bite feels like the best thing since rock ‘n’ roll. If you haven’t swung by yet, you’re cruisin’ for a bruisin’—get yourself down here and dig in!

Its reputation precedes it. Got a scramble, which was wonderfully huge (yanks = potatoes, btw). Service was nice and fast -- almost too fast. Couldn't finish the toast with the scramble at first, but waitstaff came by with the check -- although I wasn't there anywhere close to an hour, they do have a warning not to spend more than an hour there written somewhere. So, headed out to get out of the way (somewhat subconsciously) and within minutes wished I had eaten the rest of the toast. Oh well. Definitely worth a visit when in Madison.

Mickies is a local institution. It's a classic diner with traditional breakfast and lunch dishes.
I always order the cheddar melt with fries. I can't get past it. The patty is always juicy and correctly cooked. They use good rye bread with a strong flavor. The onions are nicely grilled. It's always a winner.
And here's the kicker: It's not that expensive.
The only catch is they don't take credit cards or ATM cards. You have to bring cash. If you don't you'll have to get cash out of one of those standalone ATM boxes which charge you a big fee. So bring cash.

I had the most mid omelette and it smelled like a cow and the mushrooms were from a can and the sausage was pale and gross and I didn’t enjoy anything except my toast which was very delicious except for the fact that they gave me the butt. It’s too busy for how mid this place was. My party had to share a table and I had to have the other party move out of their seats when I had to go to the bathroom. There is only one bathroom which is small and icky. I also tried the food from two of my friends. The banana pancake was good but the inside was completely raw. And the cornbread pancake was the densest pancake or cornbread ever. Impossible to eat the entire thing

Just the worst French toast I’ve ever had. Why is encrusted with egg? I’ve seen other pictures similar to the French toast I was served which makes me think it’s the norm there. So bland, just tasted like dry egg. I was really surprised because of the good reviews I’ve heard and the line I see outside. The French toast is a uniquely wretched dish.

This place was amazing! First impression -- we were greeted outside the door and told how long we had to wait. Admittedly we had a big group (12 people) and came at the most popular Sunday time (10 am), so we waited for a good 45 mins, but the staff was very good and constantly kept us updated. Normal wait for smaller groups was 5-15 mins. Once we got seated, the staff was efficient in collecting orders and bringing the food out. The prices were amazing and the portions were humongous. Definitely coming back again! Tip: this place only takes cash, so make sure you have that handy when you come.

We went to this place because of high ratings. Disappointed. I ordered a hamburger. The size of burger was good. The problem was the flavor. There was no flavor at all to the meat. The fries looked like they gave us the crumbs. The patty melt my daughter ordered also had no flavor. She too got the same fries.
Aside from the food it’s a small place. The restroom is in a small and narrow room.
The toilet was not of normal height. Looked like for a child. There’s a dining table almost in the way of getting there.
The university is closeby so I’m assuming it’s a hangout place for college students.

One of my favorite breakfast/brunch places in Madison so far! It’s a cute diner with a wide variety of food options. There was a 10-15min wait, but it was well worth it. I got the scrambler (includes yanks, eggs, toast, etc) and absolutely loved it. It was delicious, quite a large portion size (you will have leftovers), and reasonably priced ($12 before tax & tip). They only accept cash but do have an ATM inside for convenience.

Very disappointed in the steak sandwich that has always been good for like 30years. The waitress was fantastic in fixing the proble or at least trying. We have been regulars for at least 30 years. The steak sandwich was really 2 out of 10 tonight compared to its 10 out of 10

BIG breakfasts in a nostalgic setting. Great prices. The coffee cakes are fabulous especially if they are still warm from the oven. Try the yanks with onions for a savory breakfast.

Prices are reasonable, food is delicious, and good home cooking! We had the breakfast sandwich, coffee cake of the day (which was blueberry), and a breakfast egg plate with yanks (their version of hashbrowns?), eggs, and bacon. So much food, we had to take leftovers with us. Oh yeah, and a BLT with egg to go too! The serving sizes are generous especially with the potatoes! There is an ATM if you forget it's cash only!
