UPDATE SEE BELOW !I have always been impressed with the variety of offerings and the execution of the cooks to produce delicious food. On this visit the memories were better than the experience. I usually expect to have to wait for a table but not on this visit, lots of available seating. Is there complacency in the kitchen?
Corporate (Food Fight) followed up on my review. They encouraged me to dine at Monte's in the future and were hopeful my next experience would be reminiscent of my previous visits. I will check it out in the near future and follow up afterwards

As a vegan, I value this place. Diner food has always been one of my favorites and if you're vegan you know how hard it can be to find ANYTHING to eat at a breakfast place.

But Monty's Blue Plate Diner has several delicious options (even shakes!). When there is a wait it's clearly communicated and there are indoor and outdoor areas to wait. You are sat in a charming colorful diner and treated to delicious food.

I love this place, and if you are ever in Madison it's a must go.

Blue and retro! Monty’s is a diner with all the classics. Baked good for sale at the counter, all types of breakfast fixings (served all day), great vegan entrées, and Friday fish fries. Serving sizes are worthy of left overs. I had the Eggs Florentine, and it was great!

I brought my daughter & mom (visiting from out of state) to Monty's. My daughter asked for Monterey instead of Swiss cheese on her sandwich. It was served w/ Swiss & she had to send it back. My mom order the classic breakfast w/ toast. It was served w/ a biscuit. She also had to send it back. BTW the breakfast was lukewarm. I feel the server should have noticed a biscuit vs toast. I ordered a falafel wrap -- when I picked it up it fell apart. This has never happened in the past. The dining area was so loud that we could barely hear each other & left as soon as we finished the meal.

My best friend chose this restaurant for brunch. It was my first time eating here. The menu is limited, and the food was just okay, to be candid. Saw the reviews and photos and thought this would be a great little detour on our way to the Dells. But this was not the case. No sign to say seat yourself and no greeting by anyone upon entering. You are just handed menus and waters. Then they walk away. It takes a while for them to come back to even take your order.
Once you finally do order they do not take your order correctly and charge for absolutely everything! The pricing is ridiculous. You pay almost $20 for chicken a biscuits covered in syrup that tastes terrible then any additional little thing you want to add don’t worry they will charge you for it. Example the salad that is way over priced, tastes like dirt almost like it was unclean. Not good food quality at all.
For myself, my husband and my son it was $70 without tip for lunch. That was even more ridiculous. Tried to enjoy the buildings of the town while we there waiting but kind of hard to see past hand smears on the windows. Just overall a bad experience.
Oh but the spiders in the corner right above our seats, the ones that came down to greet us during our meal those were free.

I want to love Monty's, I really do. But I don't. The food has been mediocre at best. Last night I had the grilled cheese with tomato soup. I won't have it again. Plenty of bread there, hardly any cheese. (When people get a grilled cheese, they want it to be cheesy. Yours is not.) The soup was marginal at best. Service has always been friendly and quick. It is a clean restaurant and I love the diner vibe, I just haven't been wowed by the food.

This is my all time favorite diner in Madison, HANDS DOWN! My partner and I go here all the time and I get the same thing everytime: the salsa omelette (I’m forgetting the exact name because I always call it that lolll), breakfast potato’s, and some coffee. Came here to have a farewell dinner with my mom before she moved out of state and the food was absolutely incredible! I ordered the Juevos Rancheros with a side of French toast and it was all just so superb! Donovan our waiter was even more exceptional! So attentive to our needs. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left he was there to assist with whatever was needed without being over bearing and without leaving us wanting on any way. Monty’s has been a family favorite for years and I know they can make good food, which is why my rating is so high, but yesterday was not it. Our server seemed new which is fine, but she spilled water on our table multiple times and didn’t apologize. Our real issue was with the food… the tofu on our Sheldon was still cold, the cheese looked fake and wasn’t melted at all. My order came with about half the number of fries it usually does and they were burnt. My boyfriend ordered extra tahini sauce on his falafel, but it came out with none. Service was also slower than usual but I can chalk that up to it being busy and mother’s day

The food was great, but the service left a lot to be desired. We went last Saturday around 12 pm. Our server only came to our table once, so our water glasses were never refilled, and we were never offered dessert. The front staff didn’t seem very welcoming—one worker was wearing star-shaped pimple patches with black hair spent most of their time looking down or on their phone. On a more positive note, the young man in the back who was packing up desserts was very friendly—he gave off the kind of energy you’d want from a greeter. As someone in my 20s, even I noticed a lack of basic work ethic from most of the staff, which made the experience feel disappointing despite the good food.

Stopped by for breakfast on my way somewhere else. The parkinglot is a little tight but manageable. The building and inside are a little older but still charming. I had a roast beef or pot roast? It came with mashed potatoes and gravy and broccoli. Everything except the broccoli was too salty for my own preferences. I also got a strawberry shake and on other occasion a Bad Frida. The food is okay and feels commercial, not exactly old school american diner like it looks on the outside. I was expecting a step up from Perkins the first time I came but I'd say it's on the same par if not less. The prices are honestly similar too.

I’ve been here many times and while I enjoy the food, the service was atrocious and will make me not return. After waiting for 45 minutes, with sass and a remark saying “you’ve only waited 29 minutes” when asking when our table would be ready, we were pointed to a 2 top table for 4 people, missing a chair, with our elbows hitting each other the entire time. I spilled my drink, because the table is so small and it took 5 minutes for any member of the staff to come help clean up or bring over napkins as the table and myself are sopping wet. I had to repeatedly ask for napkins and my friend went back to get them and got scolded at afterwards. After asking for a new beverage the server provided me with a paper cup with a straw and a lid, dropped it on the table and didn’t say a thing. My friend ordered a simple country breakfast and it repeatedly came out wrong 4 times, after she kept correcting it. After speaking to the manager we did not receive an apology or anything of the sort, he smiled and nodded at us in what seemed to be almost sarcasm. Unfortunately the culmination of these experiences will not allow me to return.

Monty’s is a Madison staple, and for good reason. I appreciate the vegan options and putting them on a separate menu makes ordering a lot faster! (Remember to specify vegan when ordering.) I’m sad to leave this review, but we’ve now had three different experiences that left us really disappointed in the quality of food at Monty’s. It seems like something has changed with both service and recipes significantly over the last 5 years (especially the last two).

Our go-to comfort food used to be Nana’s chicken soup and loved the rolls that were included. A year or two ago we noticed the rolls changed and are now very airy and dry. We still loved the soup though so we kept ordering it for take out. Unfortunately, it appears to have been prepared very differently now after ordering this week. It had an overwhelming onion flavor from the overwhelming amount of yellow and green onions, the other veggies still had a crunch to them, and the bacon was very fatty and almost seemed to be cooked in the broth instead of crisped first.

The two other instances were dining in and I wrote off as flukes. In both instances our food was cold and service took a very long time. The food quality was fine, but far from what we’ve experienced before at Monty’s. I really hope that something can change because I think this place is a gem. It looks like many others are having similar experiences recently though.

Pretty regular Diner joint. I like the theming. The building used to be an old gas station and still retains some of that original charm. The neighborhood is really cute as well and so it makes for a good weekend spot to spend some time just outside of downtown. The food was good but nothing specifically amazing. Next time I go I would try something else. Overall great time.

Disappointing take out Monty’s experience. Pancakes were way overdone; they were brown. No butter included. Side dish (cole slaw) for my Sheldon sandwich was forgotten. I had to ask for my carrot cake or it would’ve been forgotten as well.

Fun place. We’ve had the pie and the Ruben. The food is great and the servers were very nice. It’s a place that’s on my list to stop at when we’re near / around Madison.

Updated Review: After giving another try, very successful - delicious food and service. My daughter loved the Elvis vegan French toast. Will do again when I'm in the area - glad I have it another try!!

Probably wouldn't eat here again, ordered a Reuben and only half of the sandwich had something on it, the other half was two small pieces of mean, no saurkraut, no cheese. Food was meh

The food is very good! Do note that it can get pretty busy during breakfast/brunch. I recommend finding parking closet than the lot. I would recommend the egg dishes and the burgers are solid. I love their shakes! There are plenty of vegan and veggie options as well.
