Muramotto was an incredible experience.
The sushi prepared by the chef in the crisp white hat was an extraordinary display of skill and balance. Each piece revealed harmonious contrasts: the rice perfectly warm and seasoned, the fish cool, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth, with layers of flavor that lingered delightfully. Textures ranged from delicate softness to firmer bites that added satisfying interplay, while bright, clean notes danced with deep, savory umami. Every element—from seasoning to temperature to presentation—showed a level of precision and intuition that could only come from years of experience, making the meal truly unforgettable.

They don't have some things I used to like. It seems like the "chef's choice" things are always the same cheap rolls, and I am pretty sure I got food poisoning from my last visit.

Adventurous for us we decided to try sushi and it was really good. Muramoto is known for its excellent sushi and they didn't disappoint! We had the Maki Combo that has 3 different sushi rolls , chefs choice, but you can specify any ingredients you want left out or if you have any specific food allergies. A must have is the tempura appetizer though. Super delicious with a mild spiced mayo dip. Different veggies (Bell pepper strips, zucchini, carrots, cauliflower and asparagus) fried in a crispy tempura batter. Yummy. The Kimchi was good. We enjoyed the Edamame in salted shells (large serving for only $4) The Choya plum wine on the rocks is a winner too.

Salmon cuts were thin and included the brown fat line, which is disappointing. The restaurant has no sound dampening to speak of, so it's as loud as a garage would be with 30+ people.

Another quick lunch of miso soup, Asian slaw and hamachi yellowfin roll. Sushi is great with some selections that are unique. The miso cod is usually really good, only once was it poor quality. I love the Asian slaw and miso soup.

Muramoto is one of the better sushi places in Madison. The food is pretty quality and I like that there are so many options. I’ve gone a couple times but on the most recent visit found hair in the food and sticking to the drink glasses. Otherwise, my other visits have always been satisfactory!

Arguably the best sushi in this town, period. Somehow they have it figured out and keep rolling quality sushi. The fantastic cocktails like Asian lychee margarita only help you eat more and more. Good service, and if you want to add or subtracts an ingredient from some rolls, they accommodate. You can eat at the bar or sit at the tables; menu is the same. Only gripe is once in a while it smells odd in the restaurant; better ventilation might help. Not bad enough to be deterrent, but unpleasant enough for me to mention in a review. Also hope they bring back outside seating during good weather.

We went out to eat here for lunch with our baby and it was such a pleasant experience. 1. The spacing between seating is comfortable. 2. It's a comfortable atmosphere with just the right amount of music not overtaking your voices. 3. The food was delicious, they have an interesting way of ordering, there menu is a giant board high up on the wall. I would say they really capture the taste and perfection of raw fish and sushi. They don't have the most explosive or fancied up sushi rolls but much rather have quality than appearance. We ordered two rolls and also a teriyaki chicken plate that our 1 year old absolutely munched on. Delicious food, great service, accommodating to make your dinner/lunch comfortable . Recommend!!

I used to love coming here, we haven’t been in awhile and I saw it was pretty empty after our Target run. So we stopped Monday 2/10. Everything was going along great until we were 3/4 done with our food and our waitress never came back.. we didn’t get refills, she walked by us many times, we finished eating still nothing. I look over and she’s talking to other servers, then cleaning plates. I went to the car and she saw me put my coat on and leave.. my husband still sitting there. 15 minutes after I walked out the door another server came to ask him if we needed anything.. of course he said the bill (35 minutes to get someone’s attention after done eating) Apparently the manager informed our server was cut but she never said anything. She had just got sat so plenty of time to finish our one refill, provide a box and get the bill. The manager was less than apologetic and just honestly no attempt at customer redemption here. We won’t be back and I won’t refer anyone there. There are places in Madison who want customers and if there is an issue like this would go out of their way to help and make it better.

A Japanese friend originally recommended Muramoto to us, and it has since become our go-to sushi spot in Madison. The food quality is consistently good—sashimi is fresh, and the rolls are great (we especially love the Caterpillar Roll). They also have an impressive selection of sake. We’ve tried most of them and liked over 50%, which is more than we can say for any other sushi place in Madison. (If anyone knows another spot with a wide sake selection, recommendations are welcome!)
That said, the service can be hit or miss. While we’ve had okay experiences, there have also been times when it was disappointing. The worst instance was a long wait for our sake, no introduction to the sashimi plate, no check-ins, and an unnecessary wait for the check when it was clear we were done.
Despite the service inconsistencies, we will still come back for the food and sake. We just hope they can improve the service to match the quality of their menu!

Have dined here a number of times and before tonight has always been a great experience. The food is excellent but beware of how you order. Tonight two of us ordered “sushi” of various kinds and one of us ordered “sashimi”. The sashimi came out just fine but the sushi came in rolls and not the typical nigiri style. I mentioned to the server that we ordered sushi and he told me that was sushi and I thought he was mistaken so said, “no the piece of fish on top with the rice underneath”. He proceeded to explain to me like I was a 3rd grader that what I was describing was nigiri and not sushi. I was quite taken aback at getting a lecture as well as having him explain sushi and that if I wanted what I asked for I should have ordered nigiri. Understand I’ve eaten at this restaurant multiple times and have never had this problem until tonight.
Mistakes happen but talking down to your customer is just not right. Admit you made a mistake and move on. At the end of the meal he did mention he was new. Seems like management needs to invest in customer service training before having new staff on the floor.
Great fresh fish and seafood here. I would not discourage anyone from dining here. Just be super exact in how you order or risk a lecture from the staff.

I've probably would have given it a 5/5 if I didn't order their lamb curry (which was on the special items menu). Got the curry, the sashimi combo, and Muramoto. The fish was really good. Texture was great. It did not taste brine-y at all. The curry was very disappointing. They did give lots of meat, which was the only saving factor, but the you couldn't really taste the curry.

I was in 7/3/24. Ordered blackened Cod. It came in burned black most top part waitress told me that’s blackened. I’ve been there time to time but never that burned anlso most of time same food I ordered. and she said she’s been worked 5 years and always served like that. I won’t eat burned food. And she said I don’t care you coming back. I returned food she brought food back after all my friends done.
Yes I’ll never coming back and I didn’t make trouble there. I packed my food and left. I shouldn’t give any tips. (I gave small tip) I never had problems like that there. She must have own problems.

Horrible service, I came in at 8:36 and they close at 9pm. They would not sit me, or even let me get a drink.
I could’ve ate, paid and had a drink by 9pm. Coming from Los Angeles CA where restaurants take their business seriously. The work staff and management is kinda of joke to be honest. No one holds a standard to their business anymore or care about keeping customers happy.
If you don’t want to work past 8:30pm, say “closed at 8:30pm” and don’t make people waste time driving to your restaurant.
Seriously what a joke of a business.

Most important: the staff are so patient, friendly, and amazing with gluten allergies and severe shellfish allergies. If shellfish is even slightly near a piece of fish you want they will let you know, and give you other suggestions if you ask.
Secondly: the blue mackerel sashimi is literally the best thing I have ever had. I had a carry out order, but if I was there I would have ordered 20 more.
The only con is that I have been trying to get my hands on the fatty tuna sashimi forever and it’s always sold out. I suppose it speaks to how great of a piece of fish it likely is.
I will always recommend this place. I have been many times before, and I will continue to go.
Bonus: they give me no shame every time time I go in and need a fork. Chopsticks are my mortal enemy

Our food was great. We got a chef’s special and a few other rolls to share amongst those of the table. I don’t recall what the chef special was, but it was some types of fish. I wouldn’t have normally ordered, and was glad to have the opportunity to try. Everything was clearly fresh and up. Good quality. Our drinks were also excellent. We ordered from the menu. Our server was great as well. My only complaint is that the ambience is a little cold metal chairs, cement floor. I’m not sure if I’m thinking of the old King Street location or the Hilldale location has remodeled since I’ve been there last but I seem to remember there being big cozy booths. Oh well, it sure won’t prevent me from eating there! Final thought: order the miso soup it is so freaking good here! It is easily the best miso in Madison.

I went to this lunch place a while ago, and the food was great. I returned 1/17/24 for lunch, and the server attending me made no mention of her name. She just walked up and asked if I would like a drink and my food. I had to tell her I wasn't ready yet for her to go away.
I ate and paid, and about an hour later, I had horrible stomach pains and all kinds of food poisoning symptoms. I guess you roll the dice when it comes to sushi places, but this was BAD. I basically had to make the mall restroom my home away from home. I will not be returning after such an experience.

When it comes to sushi, you can't do better than Muramoto. If it's possible to find a match, maybe it's in New York or California or Tokyo; I have yet to find it. Sushi Muramoto is in a class of its own: The special rolls are extraordinary; the Rosa Salmon hard to beat; Godzilla, Rainbow, Dragon, Tarantula are all exceptional. If you want fresher ingredients, you need to go fishing and foraging yourself; nothing served to you will be fresher. It's astonishing that something as low in calories would be as full in flavor as the miso black cod, served with bok choy. The teriyaki chicken with broccoli is a triumph (and I've never liked teriyaki-anything, anywhere else). The recipe for the sauce in the shrimp tempura with baby asparagus spears appetizer should be kept in a vault; it's incredible. The service is as good as the food. I could go on, but won't: You need to try this for yourself. Just wait and see!

Distinct fish odor when you walk in. Tables are very close together. Very little eel in the unagi roll we had, spicy tuna was chopped up like cat food. Rolls were "loose" and hard to pick up without falling apart. We will choose differently next trip to Hilldale. Wait staff looked bored and was not very attentive.

This has long been my favorite restaurant in the city and for good reason. When entering Muramoto there is always a friendly and energetic face there to greet you. The servers are top of the line with a perfect balance of being attentive enough without pestering. As for the food, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The chefs behind the sushi bar know what they are doing, so I always enjoy getting a combo and letting them curate the meal. Without fail every time I come here the fish is perfectly cut, the rolls are all sealed and portioned properly, and the quality of the ingredients is second to none. If you're in Madison for any reason and looking for a dining experience that's a cut above the rest, then Muramoto is a must have destination!!!

I got the Short Ribs... mmMM!!! The smell alone, when my dish was set neatly in front of me, was intoxicating. The ribs were perfectly smokey and full of umami flavor. Rice was fluffy and topped with a light dark rice seasoning. The whole dish looked so beautiful and tasted so delicious. To think a place like this is in Wisconsin. That's pretty cool. 10/10 would recommend. I'll be back.

Absolutely delicious sushi, probably the freshest fish I’ve ever had in Madison. Pictured from top to bottom are the Ecuador, Dragon, and Alaskan rolls. Great sushi restaurant. The Sushi combos are a very affordable option and you get a great variety of sushi. Some of the rolls were sloppy but they still tasted great.
When we went they were very busy and the service was slow. There was a short wait to be seated. There is a great variety of vegetarian (pescaterian) options with many vegan and vegetable based dishes. The restaurant has an extensive bar with many varieties of liquor.
As is the cuisine, sushi is a higher priced commodity but there are affordable options on the menu. The combos are a great choice for sushi on a budget. For those where price isn't a factor, there are tons of high quality fish, eels and squid.
My personal favorite had to be the spicy tuna roll and the seabass.
It is on the main street of the shopping mall with street parking and a free parking structure. The restaurant is ADA accessible. There is limited seating and wouldn't recommend for large groups.

I went with my partner and we sat at the sushi bar. We were there for about five minutes and no one had served us. All the sushi chefs and waiters were standing around joking with each other. Confused, I asked to be helped. He told me my server would be along.... 10 more minutes goes by and no one has helped us.. finally a sushi chef flags down a waiter to help us. He comes over and starts taking our order, as I'm ordering another waiter cuts him off and starts taking my order again??
We ordered a side of kimchi and two chefs choice. The kimchi was literally Costco kimchi. The sushi was fine, though they gave us two mayo based rolls which was disappointing. The waiter had no idea what the fish was, the names of the rolls or really what was going on. I honestly think he was a cook from a different restaurant that was called in to wait tables.
A random waiter changed out our 95% full soy sauce with a full bottle about 4 times. It was honestly the worst dining experience I've had in a while. The place hasn't changed it's menu in the 5 years I've lived in Madison and hope I don't have to go back.

Started with our favorite lychee drinks, then Edamame - the best in town, still hot and salty. Shared both the Asian slaw salad and the seaweed salad - delightful flavors. My Boston roll was stellar - the tuna so dark! Friends loved the spicy shrimp with coconut sauce with veggies and rice. And the wait staff could not have done a better job! Always happy to come back because we can rely on having a perfect meal.

I walked into the restaurant and stood by the sign that said, “Please wait here to be seated.” Within about two minutes, I counted three employees that all walked past me without any form of acknowledgment whatsoever. I immediately walked out. I was looking forward to trying this place out, however, there’s NO WAY that I will ever patronize an establishment that lacks the basic decency of greeting anyone that walks through its doors.

Muramoto had some of the best fish quality that I have been able to find in Madison so far. The rolls were delicious though were not as well rolled as I would hope. Many of the rolls we had immediately fell apart when you tried to pick them up.
The staff was super friendly and attentive, and the space had a great atmosphere to it

So disappointed, expected better. Tonight I called at around 7pm and asked if they were open for normal hours, they said yes, until 8pm. My husband called about 20 minutes later to try to make a reservation, which they would not take, said they don't do, but said they were still seating and open normal hours. Less than 15 minutes later, around 7:35pm, we showed up and they said they were no longer seating, that they were "out of fish" and not taking any more people for the evening. We said we had called and been told to come, asked if we could try salads, crab/shrimp based dishes, and they just gave a condescending "sorry" and turned us away. I will certainly never come back. If you want to go to a restaurant to eat or drink, don't go here.

The staff was racist. They were rude and not willing to provide a table. Two guests after me, walked in who were treated with respect and the hostess was seeing putting in an effort to see there is a table available.

Low-key quality joint with quality fish! It's fun to be right up to the sushi bar and see the action(for the most part) the staff were almost on point( we went during mothers day, so understandably flustered, and wasnt sure of our sake brand) I'm not a huge stickler for the minor imperfections but want to mention for anyone really for that 5 star quality. Its hilldale in a nutshell. Quaint, more than acceptable with freindly staff. I'm sure more attention is brought on slower days, but a great recommendation If you cant make it to my personal 5 star joint.

I was in Madison last night to meet a friend and ended up having a fantastic meal. The roll was super tasty and a nice sized portion, the blended flavors were excellent! The staff was very nice and helpful and Jenna did an excellent job and was very attentive. I will definitely be back on my next trip to Madison.

I went here in person a few months ago around valentine’s day and the sushi was fantastic, however, today I ordered takeout and was very disappointed. For the price I am paying for this food I was disappointed to receive sushi with barely any filling, the rolls were majority just full of rice and the fish tasted like it was scrap pieces. I was very surprised and the difference in quality when we dined in versus getting take out.

The place was recommended to us by a friend. Felt the place was a bit cramped up. The food was very average and the service was very disappointing. The server hardly came to check on the table and we had to get her attention to order more food. There are many other nicer places with better over all experience in the Madison area. We were very disappointed and will not be visiting this place again.

Went here because Red was booked for the night. We were blown away. Martinis made with care and artistry! The fish was fresh and wrapped with a perfect sticky rice. Great service and trendy vibe! 10/10 🙌🏻
Edit: don’t come here for sushi for lunch tho, did so today and it was made with warm rice 🤢. Maybe they make all the rice in the morning or something idk but it was not good

Celebrated my sister’s birthday here last week. Had a very nice time. The food was good, and servers were great. Tried the red bean ice cream for the first time, wow, it was so good! I probably shouldn’t be telling you all this, as it probably means less for me in the future. The boys swore by the matcha mules, neither are green tea fans, so that’s saying something. I also love getting the chefs choice from here. Check them out if you haven’t been there yet.
