Serves the usual bar food that is surprisingly really good. Besides many burger choices, they also serve salads, a chicken & a salmon sandwich. For the large group we arrived with, they had us seated within about 15 min. Service was great & everybody got what they ordered. Waitress checked on us just enough. With the party size, came the added gratuity on each family's check. Like any other place you eat, it isn't cheap, but the amount of food for the price is good.

Lunch reservation for 16 people at 1:00pm on a recent Sunday. Separate checks were requested before we ordered. The food and service were fine, BUT the checks were totally screwed up! After more than half an hour & three tries of reprinting receipts, there were still problems. We finally left a guesstimate of cash. (This may have involved a trainee who was not supervised?)

The patio is amazing, even on this hot day. (I'm not a fan of AC because it's usually too cold for me.) It's shaded in the afternoon and we had a nice breeze blowing through. There were a couple of tables that brought their dogs with them. I enjoyed watching them and the staff brought them their own water cups. Sweet! 🥰

Original Review March 9, 2025:
Discovered Nitty Gritty (“NG”) while attending a Destination Imagination Regional Tourny, and we are glad we did! It has instantly become a fab for us in this area!

For First-Time Visitors: NG is inside a historic canning factory in a safe, pleasant area of downtown. Adequate on-street parking as well as some adjacent lot parking. Outdoor seating available near the entrance..

Cutting right to the chase: NG’s greatest asset during our visit was our server, “Phredde” (pronounced “Fred,” also known as “Sam”—it's a long story, but she can share that with you if she wants to!). She was a total ROCK STAR, making what most would consider top-tier service look second class. Phredde (Sam) was prompt, attentive, professional, and had a fantastic personality, which is essential when serving people like us! She accurately took our orders, especially for my wife, who has Celiac disease, ensuring everything was correct, hot, timely and safe.

While our initial arrival here didn’t feel particularly welcoming, she completely turned that, around, making us feel like honored guests. From what we observed at our table, we were not the only ones benefitting from this level of care; this seems to be Sam’s default setting when serving guests at NG (okay, I’ll start using her real name - I think I've “damaged” her enough by now!!).

We plan on returning to the area within the coming weeks, and we will be looking for Sam as our server again! If you stop by - you should be asking for her also! Sam will make your day!

Next, the food. Fabulous! I took advantage of the Friday Fish Fry, Soft Pretzel Appetizer, and their “Worlds Smallest Sunday” (although, I am sure that Ed Dedevic’s in Chicago may have something to say about that claim!).

The Soft Pretzel Sticks (4 count, about 6” x 1” each) were warm and delicious. Firm, but not unforgivingly tough. The cheese sauce for dipping was a great addition ( I passed on mustard - hate mustard!). The sticks were tasty just on their own. They were not salted, which I prefer.

While others often choose lesser-quality cuts for their events, NG uses premium cuts of cod that are light and flavorful. Instead of a thick layer of partially fried dough, their cod is enveloped in a very light and fully cooked batter. The accompanying fries were lightly salted and cooked to perfection.

The “Smallest Sunday” was about a golfball-ish sized portion which was just perfect for a filling meal. I had chocolate and caramel sauce added….WA!

My wife chose the gluten-free cheeseburger, and she found it to be a surprising tastey. While many gluten-free food options can be fairly bland, this sandwich stood out for its flavor. More importantly, it was carefully prepared to avoid gluten and any cross-contamination. Although NG is not a dedicated gluten-free establishment, their staff clearly understands the importance of these precautions. We experienced no adverse effects whatsoever. Great job!

Finally, if NG has an Achille’s Heel, it is in the initial greeting as we entered. Both greeters, along with someone we suspected was the manager, were prompt, professional, and efficient—perhaps overly so. They did not offer any smiles or warm greetings, instead carrying out their duties quickly and politely. They quickly assessed how many were in our party, whether we preferred a booth or a table, and then escorted us to our seats.

However, that somewhat flat start to the evening was completely transformed by “Phredde” (…did we mention “Phredde?”). As we alluded to earlier, she truly elevated our experience, turning what would have been a 4-star review into the 5-star rating we are giving today.

Intereseting concept: Converted canning operation building. Pleasant atmosphere. Loud, but not so much that we could not hold a conversation. Cool reception at best at front door. No one smiling. Hostest was utilitarian; not warm or engaging at all. Waitress was very friendly and warm. Great first contact and initial follow through. Started to slip after that. Ordered appetizer fries. We are glutten free and were assured that they had a seperate fryer for such. Meal arrived, but not the appetizers. We asked and Waitress appologized, went to kitchen, and immediatly returned with the fries. Having an order come that fast (and being as warm as they were) made us worry as to whether this was the gluten free order, or just a regular order grabbed to save time. We risked it, and fortuantely they proved to be the G-frees. We lacked some silverware and needed more napkings - it took a while for us to flag our Waitress down to request them. We also had to wait longer than we expected for drink refills. Food was hot and tastey. Nice selection offered on the menu. When we left, no one offered a "thanks for coming" comment of any type...just looks of acknowlegement that a customer was leaving. The atmosphere and food will bring us back, but if you like a more personalized experience - unless you know someone to ask for specifically, be prepared for a bit of a let down.

I just had thee worse experience ever at NITTY GRITTY SUN PRAIRIE!! I have never been treated so badly in my whole life, never will that place get my hard earned money again!!! My family and I go in, we get seated… another family come I’m behind us get seated order is taken they get their food and we’re still waiting to have our order taken. If I may be real, I am an African American and we happen to be the only African Americans there. The initial waiter was Caucasian. We literally had to complain because we were waiting so long, we didn’t even get asked what we wanted to drink 😡. So long story short. The manager comes over and apologizes for the miscommunication and sends us a black waiter who was working at the bar. I usually don’t do this, but this is ridiculous. I’ve spent so much money there and it saddens me to be treated this way.

Classic Madison area eatery. Absolutely love the Gritty burgers on the super fresh wheat bun. The Great Garlic (the aoili!) is also fantastic. Their coleslaw is also my favorite. Certainly would rank the Nitty Gritty in Sun Prairie a 4 1/2 out of 5. Went there for my grandsons' 9 th birthday and he and his siblings had a great time. There were 7 of us and we had a diverse menu and everyone was very satisfied. Food was very good (I had my first Gritty Burger in almost 50 years and still great) Also had gluten free and vegetarian options And everyone enjoyed the onion rings and Cheese curds as a great pre-meal starter.
Prices were reasonable. Our waitress was a plus going out of her way to make our dinner enjoyable with very good service and a big smile. Plenty of TV's in dinning area, a few games for the kids and a very good Beverage selection.
Dessert choices looked interesting but we had a birthday cake waiting at home ( although the birthday boy was given a small complimentary birthday sundae)

I was really looking forward to getting a Chicago hot dog. That didn't happen, they have it on the menu but when I received it the tomatoe, mustard,onion, sport peppers and relish (which was not neon green from what I could tell) were all blended together! I’m here at 6:40. The bartender says to me “we need a card back here even if you’re ordering food because we’re afraid people will run off.” I asked for the manager to confirm. He said “yep, that’s our policy….” as a former restaurant owner, this was one of the more ridiculous things I’ve ever seen and an obvious attempt at justifying some other reason. The food was average to below average here. My burger was very bland and not much flavor. The patio was nice; they allow dogs outside on the patio.

I went here for lunch with one of my best homegirls on 4/13/24. We were seated right away, but I don't know if they were short staffed even though it wasn't busy. Service was kinda slow at the beginning. Which was fine because it gave us time to talk and catch up. We ordered our appetizers, and that took longer than expected. Once we got them. We placed our order for our entree. While enjoying our appetizers, our entrees came out very quickly. Our burgers were cooked to perfection, and everything was delicious 😋 It was a Saturday afternoon, so the atmosphere was chill. A lot of people eating outside on a nice day. The staff were friendly and helpful. I'd pick this location over Madison, WI location.
