Eclectic restaurant Restaurant

Description

Welcome to Nook, our little corner of the restaurant world. Nook is a family owned and operated restaurant. It is an expression of who we are: adventurous, whimsical, and a little eccentric. The food is built on quality ingredients that are treated respectfully and served artistically. Nook is a communal 12 seat dining room that is comfortable and professional with no barriers - literally. There are no walls between the chef and the guest. The dining room is very much a part of the kitchen, giving diners an experience to embrace and remember.

Phenomenal range across this large tasting menu. Dishes ranged from comfy potato chips and potatoes with french onion dip to a sous vide chicken breast in a ground cherry mole. Throughout, they paired big flavors with impeccably balanced beverages. A must-try for gastronomes.

We loved this place. Great food, amazing service and perfect music. We found it somewhat challenging to get reservations due to there only being 12 seats a night but it was well worth the wait!! Can't wait until we can try it again.

Arguably the best meal I’ve ever had. I can’t imagine giving this place less than 5 stars. Food, service, vibe - everything was perfection. It was a fun opportunity to try a lot of different things I haven’t tasted before! Hoping to make this an annual tradition. Thanks, Nook!

The food at Nook was creative and well-executed, with thoughtful use of Southeast Asian ingredients. However, the experience was overshadowed by offensive and unprofessional behavior. A chef suggested that their server introduce a dessert with accents, including a non-existent ‘Southeast Asian accent.’ The server ultimately performed in an Irish accent, joking about not knowing what soursop is—even though it was part of the dessert. This joke only made the majority white audience laugh. As the only non-white and Southeast Asian diners, my party felt unwelcome and disrespected. Using accents as a joke and displaying ignorance about the ingredients you’re profiting from reflects poorly on the restaurant and degrades the fine dining experience. Nook needs to rethink how their actions affect their guests.

It was truly the best dining experience I’ve ever had. Beyond the amazing flavors of all the dishes, I liked:
- casual atmosphere
- hospitality and great service, there are only 12 seats, so you feel like you’re at a private event
- because of the way the menu is built, you don’t wait for the food, once you finish one dish, they bring you the next one
- very family-like/friendly atmosphere of seating together at a big table and enjoying great food
- stories from the chef about each dish
- every dish has a unique plate and style
- 13-course menu for 125 per person is such a great deal

Thank you for preparing such a great dinner!

Nook is an experience - there is no other way to explain it.

The passion the staff have for food and service is evident in every detail.

We had 13 courses total for our seating, and left completely full, even after not completely eating every course. Opted for the beverage pairing, which was generally good. The sake was the only thing I didn't enjoy, and even then, that's on me.

The risotto shall haunt my dreams for as long as I live, in the best way.

I've been to many tasting menus around the states. I've found some incredible places, but there are a few restaurants that go beyond excellence and Nook is one of them. Nook is special. Not only is their food top-notch, but the environment they've created is truly unique and memorable. This is unlike any other tasting menu I've been to. The staff is so much fun and so friendly, elevating the dinner that much fuether. The courses are unique and don't lack on flavor. If you're lucky, youll be sat next to other friendly strangers and get to share in the exciting dinner with other good company. I could not give Nook a higher recommendation. If you're able to snag a ticket, do it, and enjoy a one-of-a-kind dinner!

I can't imagine a better dining experience: fun, delicious, comfortable. A true representation of the Wisconsin culinary scene. Fresh ingredients highlighted by an imaginative menu that maintains approachability over attitude. The chefs and family make you feel like you're dining in their kitchen. I went in with high expectations from friends, but was absolutely blown away.

Seriously wish I had something bad to say to discourage folks from taking up all the reservations, but please go. A proud Wisconsin experience.

Hard to give a rating - I want it to be 5 stars, and for Madison it perhaps is, but when comparing versus similar price points in major food cities around the country or in Europe - the food falls short.

All the dishes were well presented and generally good, but there wasn’t really a standout, special dish - which at this price point is a disappointment. The dishes are comparable to other good restaurants in Madison, just in the form of a 13 course menu and a little extra creativity in some of them.

Service and chef are exceedingly kind and good hosts, and the drink menu is good/unique and pairings matched well - so definite positives there.

Constructive feedback for the restaurant would be to pair down the quantity served with each course a little bit and use that saved time/money/effort to introduce more ‘gastronomique’ refinement to the ingredients. The quantity can be a bit too much - we were served 4 dessert courses which were each about the size of a normal dessert plate elsewhere. This was far too much and took me from feeling comfortably full to just gorged and still ‘needing’ to eat a ton more super sweet dessert because it was next up on the course. Four times. Looking around, most of the guests were barely eating these desserts because it was just too much. Focusing more on the distribution of courses (a stronger balance towards lighter/whimsical courses at the beginning of the menu and having truly “unbutton my pants good” savory courses mid menu, and fewer, less sweet dessert courses) would really improve the pacing of the meal and give more flavor/textual/sensory variety to the meal as a whole.

If you are looking for a fun dining experience, it is a fairly nice option. The vibe is pretty friendly and casual; the plating is beautiful. However, when it comes to food I feel like (at least for our menu) they tried to put too many strong flavors on one dish and these are not always balanced. Sometimes too salty, too sour, or too sweet. (Especially the Mac and Cheese with pine and pretzel, way too much salt!! I can appreciate very strong cheese but it should be paired with something plain, not melted entirely as a cream sauce where the high salt almost tasted bitter and caused dizziness.) Among the 12 dishes, 2/12 really good appetizers raised expectations and 6/12 tasted OK, except that 1/12 was uneatable, 3/12 were a little disappointed concerning the flavor. I mean, it's definitely not a bad place as a cozy & creative family-owned restaurant, but it do need re-polishing for the menu.

Truly amazing experience at Nook! We had incredible food, and while not every course was going to be our favorite (with 13 courses, how could they be!?), each course was interesting and kept us wanting to take more bites. The ambiance was the perfect blend of low-key and relaxed, while still providing effortless (from a dining perspective - the servers were putting in a LOT of effort!) top-notch service. An extra plus was my husband had to come 45 minutes late due to a last minute babysitter issue - Chef Noah and the Nook folks caught him up on all courses when he arrived, which was not at all expected but so so appreciated. We will definitely return on another special occasion date night. We'll be dreaming about the PB&J, pine bark, and squid courses for months to come!

At Nook, every bite is a pun-derful delight! With only 14 seats, it's like a cozy soup pot where everyone's simmering in good vibes.

We came to celebrate our 12 year wedding anniversary, and Nook truly served up a slice of romantic perfection! We weren't just fed, we were whisked into an anniversary adventure. If you're looking to marinate in memories and garnish your special day with flavor, Nook's the place to be. We didn’t just celebrate; we savored every bite of the experience. Cheers to love and luscious dishes!

Their take on PB&J? I have to spread the news about it; it’s utterly jam-packed with flavor! Over the course of 13 delectable courses, I wasn’t just full... I was stuffed with a buffet of emotions.

The chef's recipe for success isn't just about seasoning the dishes right; it’s peppered with humor too. And the wait staff? They don't just serve food; they dish out an impeccable experience with a side of charm.

So, if you're hungry for a place where the steaks are high and the puns are even higher, Nook’s the ultimate foodie destination. Remember, it’s not just about feeding the belly; it’s about whisking you away into a gastronomic journey! Go ahead and relish the Nook experience.

One of the best culinary experiences you can have in the area.

Our meal was a 14 course meal with wine parings. The food was excellent and brought your senses to life. Courses are colorful, artistic, fragrant, and come with a short story about the food and wine.

The menu does change and many local foods are used.

The staff is outstanding friendly and fun making the dinner atmosphere enjoyable by the room.

One key feature is the small crowd size, our party had 12 people.

The dishes are prepared in the open so you can watch and ask questions.

My partner and I loved our experience here! I'm vegetarian and they were so thoughtful about alternatives for me. Near the end there were some plates I couldn't finish because I was so full. We also splurged on the wine pairings, which were fantastic. You can tell they're really passionate about food and family. It is expensive but we went to celebrate our 3-year wedding anniversary and it was 1000% worth it. Just be sure to read their FAQ's before booking so you know what to expect (and take the release time of the reservations seriously - I got on right at midnight and we barely squeezed in!). Thank you - we hope to be back next year!

This is a unique, intimate experience with one of the best chefs in Madison. It is in very high demand. Tickets require logging in at midnight on the first of the month to schedule a seating two months out; weekend tickets are gone within minutes, and the whole month is sold out within half an hour. About half of the group of 12 at our seating appeared to be regulars.

This is primarily a “foodie” experience. If you are less of a regular foodie, be warned that 12 courses is a lot of food. Serving everyone the full sequence is baked into the communal dining experience (where everyone gets the same dish and then a full explanation is provided by the chef), but there are a couple of drawbacks. First, the entire group is paced by its slowest member, so this lasted around three hours. Second, there will probably be a few courses that are not to your liking, especially given the experimental ingredients here. And third, this is just too much food for a lot of people; it was about double what I am comfortable eating, even after fasting all day in preparation. (And these frankly work against each other: it is much harder to finish a dish you are not a fan of when you are already full and anticipating 6 more courses, and despite not wanting to insult the chef, we were not able to complete some of them. To the chef: sorry!) For us, this would have been a better experience if edited down to around 6 courses.

The restaurant deserves a full 5 stars, however, because some of the dishes were among the best I have experienced in Madison. There is a creative use of plating, and an emphasis on texture and crunchy toppings that elevated each dish. The best dishes during our experience were a cold beef appetizer, a mushroom and wild rice soup, a quail entrée, and a phenomenal fresh chocolate bar with chilis and pistachios. (Please, please consider opening a gourmet chocolate shop on the side.)

Everyone on staff was friendly and accommodating, and the atmosphere was as casual as promised. We love to dress comfortably when fine dining and were fans of the 1990s hip hop soundtrack. And we knew in advance that this would be a pricey experience (around $200 per person with drinks), but it is commensurate with the amount and variety of food that is served. I would highly recommend Nook to any foodie (they seem to be regulars here) and encourage anyone with an adventurous streak wanting to sample the best dining experiences that Madison has to offer.

We ate at nook early last year and are reserved for next month again.

The atmosphere is unique and fun. I was hesitant about the "communal" table arrangements, but you don't feel pressured into conversations and can still have a pretty intimate experience. If you do want to lean into the communal aspects for conversation, that is also fun.

The food is incredible. Some of their dishes are ingenius, yet approachable, interpretations of classic dishes (their chili and their clarified tomato soup come to mind). Others are unrecognizable (their "pizza" cracker, for example), yet delicious. Everything is astounding and worth marveling over.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the wine pairings. I've never been so blown away by wine pairings. The notes they call out incredibly evident when paired with the dish -- I've never experienced anything like it, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for the art of pairing wines.

Finally, shoutout to the servers and kitchen staff. Incredibly knowledgable and great service the entire night. What a unique and fun experience.

Pretty fantastic experience, please read other reviews for positives and I absolutely echo their sentiment.

However, I am giving a four star rating because the two times I have been, I have found that about half of the food was “too flavorful”…. Too sweet, too salty, too acidic, too rich… etc. As someone who does not love sweets, I also really did not like that 4/13 courses were desert. By the end I honestly wanted to throw it away.

Overall it is a really fun experience and I will definitely go back to enjoy times with friends and the food and experience is incredible quality… just a bit much for me.

Nook is incredible. The food is absolutely delicious. I think it was 13 courses & I was sooooo very stuffed. One of the chefs explains all of the courses & even adds in a little humor to lighten things up. They found a way to mix high class dining with the cozy comfortable feeling of being at a loved ones house. I highly suggest eating at Nook. I think it’d be perfect for any occasion. Before I typed this review One review caught my eye & I HAVE to comment on it. I can not believe it…. “Malferd”. How can you leave Nook and still be hungry? If you leave hungry that is your own fault. The amount of food given is MORE than enough (#DoggyBag 😂). Also, how is eating at Nook a fake experience? The only way the “meals are bite sized” is if you’re a flippen giant. Anyways, go eat at NOOK!

Nook has some of the best cuisine Madison has to offer. Their tasting menu consists of about 14 courses. The chef walks you through each of the courses before you begin to eat. The chef had a great personality and he made it seem like I was visiting an old friend with his charm and hospitality. The seating is communal style for 12 people, so you better get ready to socialize a bit at this dinner. I am vegetarian and Nook created a separate tasting menu for me. The food was delicious and innovative. Some of the dishes were so unique that I had never heard of them before. My favorite was a pesto pasta created from heart of palms. I even bought some heart of palms the day after to try and recreate this masterpiece of a dish. I went on my birthday and I even got a small “cake” made of chocolate ganache with a candle on it. I would definitely eat here all the time if the price was lower, but there is no doubt I will return for another meal the next time I get a chance.

The food is incredible, of course, but what sets Nook apart from other fine dining establishments is the atmosphere. With a single communal table with only 12 seats, right next to the kitchen, you are truly dining in the chef-owners’ “nook.” It felt almost like a dinner party with friends, but with the service and quality of a fine dining establishment. My water never ran dry, the dishes came out at a perfect pace, and the drinks were solid. Frankly, $100 for 13 courses is a steal compared to what you’d pay in a larger city. I went with a single wine a la carte but the pairing looked like a great deal too with 9 half-pours for $50. Chefs and servers were lively and friendly, and I dug the music (mostly 90s hip-hop and R&B).
Make your reservations well in advance! They were booked 2 months out and we only got in because of the waitlist.

Not my thing. But if you like odd food and foul music and pretentiousness disguised as anti pretentiousness this place might be for you.

They gave us disclaimers at the meal after already have taken our deposit. Meaning that we heard the disclaimers beforehand we probably would not have gone. Disclaimers should be 110% on their website when you make reservations and have to plug down $20 per person.

Will not be going back was the most expensive meal of our weeklong 21st anniversary celebration and sadly the worst. The only positive thing I can say is other than the swearing by the owner they and their server were polite.

Much better value and dining experience to be had at Rare and Johnny Delmonico's or even Ruth Chris's.

As an experience the Nook is Unforgettable sadly not in a good way.

Absolutely amazing food and the staff was incredibly friendly. Each course came with a great description of where the ingredients came from and how it was prepared. Plan to come back again and again!

I have eaten in restaurants all over the world and this is up there with the best of them. Fun because the chef chooses the courses for the night. Outstanding food and preparation by the chef. You get to taste items prepared together you never thought was possible and have them taste so good. Thanks for a great evening. We went for the 9 course meal. It was superbly inventive as well as beautifully presented and delicious. The owners sense of humor and presentation of the meal components added to the wonderful evening and the service was perfect.

Most excellent experience. This was our first time at Nook and the food was absolutely incredible. Each course was impeccably executed, both visually and by taste. Chef Noah was an absolute joy. Highly recommend this gem of a restaurant, Madison is so fortunate to have the Nook!

We like to cook, we like to eat, we like the company of others. We like camaraderie of others and a bit of adventure and whimsy in our lives. All of this was met at Nook. The chef(s) had stories behind the dishes so instead of just eating, you understood the how it was made and the why. The serving platters were different every course and were unique. The long table allowed us to make new friends and enjoy new conversations. The pairings were fun and allowed us to try things we usually would not have. I think if you're looking for an intimate and creative way to dine and like great food and a bit of adventure - this is a MUST in Madison!

The place already has a deserved 4.9 stars, I just thought I'd add my two cents. Most importantly, these guys made gluten-free and vegan accommodations that were frankly stellar (they need at least a week notice for this I think--check website). Some restaurants sort of phone it in for dietary accommodations (which is understandable). Nook does not. Every dish was fantastic, and clearly very carefully crafted.
Calling this place 'comfort food' is inaccurate. I don't know what to call it besides 'f***ing delicious'. Atmosphere is elegant, relaxing, and unpretentious.

Referring to Nook as being cozy or having comfort food belies the quality of the ingredients, the creativity behind the menu, and the absolute pleasure of having dinner here. The decor is elegant and the communal table offers possibilities for socializing. Anyone who thinks they need a huge kitchen to feed a crowd needs to look at what this talented team can pull off in a compact, well organized space. Just a fun time and reasonably priced for what you get.

Absolute best meal in Madison. Every dish was spectacular making it hard to pick a favorite. The entire meal was well put together and all of the tastes were intentional. We added the drink pairing which really enhanced all of the flavors. A nice, delicious meal with a casual atmosphere that I would recommend to anyone.

Group of 6 had the 9 course meal with the restaurant to ourselves. The restaurant itself is comfortable, not stuffy or overly fancy (unless you opt for the smooth jazz playlist!), the kind of place you can hang our in conversation for several hours over good food and drinks. The chef was funny and you could tell they are passionate about food but also want to have fun with it. The menu showed this fun-loving personality off well - PB&J themed dessert, teddy graham cheese course, cheese puffs in the cauliflower soup, etc. Well worth the 2 hour visit with your foodie friends!

The best mixture of creative cuisine and open, family-style dinner party atmosphere set to 90s rap. The food is as good or better than Sanford, Harvest, or Forequarter but the experience of clients bantering with the Chefs and each other is comfortable and fun and without any pretension at all. It’s just really great food and people!

What a unique and delicious nook!
Had a lovely, well planned, and well presented dinner. Was the first time going and will be back. Parking can be tricky, just street parking around the area, so we ended up parking 2 blocks away. The nook is just a nook with simple and streamlined seating. Open kitchen where you can sort of see the prep. Great service and efficiency. They have two seatings, we went to the first one at 5:30. Service starts pretty much on time. The chef speaks to each dish - informative and fun. They provide pairing with food as well as just by the glass/bottle wines, beer, etc. We left happy and delighted by the dishes... but wanted a touch more time to eat and linger. Pace is nice for fast eaters; we are slow and we had a lot to talk about! Another 10-15 minutes would have made the eating more leisurely. Next time will try the second seating. Bravo to founders on the concept, pulling it off and bringing a quality-unique experience to Madison!
