First and foremost, we are Family run business, and we love nothing more than to add you to the Family Tree! NOTB is our version of New Orleans, just as you have yours. We have taken those great southern spices and turned them into what is now our Nola Favorites! Along with cajun inspiration, we have taken some of our Wisconsin classics, and infused them with a little Nola💟 Our beer is brewed on premise, one barrel at a time, brewed from the heart and for the love of beer. Crowlers are now available to take your favorite style home!

I’ve seen this place so many times on my commute and finally wanted to give it a try on a Friday fish fry. The hostess was quite friendly, the server was ok… the food was awful. We ordered the fried okra, fried tilapia with sweet potato fries -all were so incredibly bland. Without the sauces it was have been inedible. We won’t be going back here- big disappointment.

My wife and I have been wanting to try this place for a long time. Unfortunately, we did tonight. We arrived to no host, flagged down the bartender who told us to sit wherever. Raw oysters were huge (in a bad way), no briny/fresh flavor, tough and meaty parts. Couldn't eat them all because they were off. No lemon served, weak horseradish. Got a small portions of etoufee and gumbo. Fine but gumbo was flavorless. Got crab cakes that were mostly tasting of the bread crumb, and they were on top of lettuce and black beans? My beer was actually good, but my wife's margarita was bad, no tequila taste. Overall, not good. Won't come back. The fountain was nice! Oh also someone parked us in? Like parked in front of bus in a totally open parking lot when we pulled through our spot there was no real parking spot in front of us? Weird vibes!

Came here to Madison to celebrate our 25th anniversary and had to check this place out, it definitely did not disappoint. The brews here were great, the staff friendly, and the food was outstanding! Had the jambalaya pasta and it was so flavorful with a bit of a kick to it...just as Cajun food should. Will definitely return when we can

We have dined at this restaurant, four times in the past 2 1/2 years. There are so many excellent restaurants in Madison. It’s hard to get back. I guarantee you the food here is fabulous and I know it’s a hard location to get to, but it’s more than worth it. If you love New Orleans style, and Cajun meets French, you’re in for a treat.

Love! The food quality and freshness is there! The burgers were amazing as well as the light battered cheese curds and nachos! How are they not in the running for best curds?? Amazing!! Thank you Brandon and Moses for an amazing bar experience! (The drinks and prices were very good and not overpriced!!)

I had driven by this place everyday on my commute and finally decided to give it a try when my parents were in town last Friday. They have a sign out front saying live music at 5:30 on Fridays so we were excited to sit outside and enjoy. There was no music. We all ordered some of the Southern specialty cocktails. My cocktail was absolutely undrinkable. The bartender was very nice and made me a second one but this was also not good. Two of us ordered Po-Boys and two of us ordered the fish fry. A few issues that I had: there was no lemon served with the fish fry, the bread was like those little rolls that you sometimes get with an airplane meal. And the side salad that they charged extra for was very sad in the dressing was not good. We will not be returning.

Everything here was great! Becoming a brewery was great for them as the beer is fantastic. I highly recommend the "Old IP-Abe" beer. It is a less hoppy and more malty IPA.
Service and food was great as well. Jambalaya Pasta was nice and spicy and had a lot of meat. Shrimp Po Boy (with Cajun Mayo) had some nice crunchy bread and crispy shrimp.
My future wife and I will be back.

We cannot WAIT to go back here! What an amazing experience we had. The food was so so very good and our server Brandon was fabulous! Never EVER go to this restaurant. My family and I waited almost an hour for our appetizer, and then never even received our entrees as the bartender never put it in despite writing it down. She must’ve been too busy socializing with her coworkers. They don’t offer any type of non alcoholic drinks other than virgin hurricanes which cost just as much as the alcoholic version($14) which was not disclosed to us until we saw the bill. The manager then proceeded to blame us for our food never arriving by saying we should have said something sooner. I didn’t realize it was the customers responsibility to manage food times and employees. This place is a disappointment, the staff are lazy and untrained and the manager is ineffective.

I came here because it seemed unique and interesting. Upon walking in, I thought it definitely had a unique vibe.

The server seemed scared and confused - almost like she didn't really know why she was there.

I ordered a medium chicken / sausage jambalaya. A bowl of cajun seasoned rice came with a few pieces of thin, old, dry, wilted sausage and one tiny hint of a chicken (the size of a quarter).

I took it back and told her there wasn't chicken. She asked me, "What do you want me to do?" Very strange.

After asking if she could just make sure I receive what I ordered, she came back 5 minutes later with the same bowl of old, dry cajun seasoned rice, one piece of sausage, and 3 small pieces of dry chicken.

The good was old and dry. This was evident.

Don't waste your time, unless you just want beer.

We love this place. I'm a big fan of the shrimp tacos, and my partner loves the crabcakes paired with any of the New Orleans specialties, especially the Creole. Staff is always friendly, and the deck is perfect for outdoor dining. So glad it's in the neighborhood.

Wow, so much better than expected after reading other recent reviews. Not much for staff, but they’re very up front about that from a sign outside the restaurant requesting that you order at the bar and stating they’ll check on you when they can! Our food was delivered pretty quick and SO delicious. My husband ordered the jumbalaya chimichanga and it looked like something that you’d order at an all inclusive resort - pretty, filling, and tasty! I got the shrimp po boy with sweet potato fries and I do have to say: don’t skip those fries, better than the average SP fry!! Also, 13/10 stars go to the crab cakes. Don’t miss out on this Madison hidden gem!

I decided to try north of the Bayou I ordered a large order of chicken and sausage jambalaya to go. I was very disappointed. It was very dry I only found three pieces of chicken and five small slices of sausage in the entire order. I had to add Penzeys Cajun seasoning to Jazz it up and a little water. I think I will stick to making my own. Maybe I got yesterday's batch

Board said low staff be patient, no problem. Except staff was on phones or pouring "shots" for fun. Yes, they gave out one to each person free, but twice ignored us to purchase paid drinks we wanted. Food was quick overall (one app came out with dinner), but just meh. Won't go back, but wasn't terrible. Left full and had small lunch leftover of the pasta.

Not sure they know what they want to be...brew pub, beer bar or New Orleans vibe restaurant. Seemed more like a typical beer bar. Beer is okay but most of their selection is out...several Abita beers on tap. Didn't eat there as it didn't seem clean (fits in to the New Orleans vibe). Prices were reasonable. Staff was almost personable.

Food was great but we waited 1 hour just for an appetizer and 30 more minutes for our entrées all while watching everyone else be served. My husband felt it might be race related as we were the only black people and seemingly the only ones having this issue. Not sure though. The food was good.

My family and I celebrated Mardi Gras at North of the Bayou last night and it was great! We love the way the place is decorated, the NOLA music being played and the way they had everyone order them be seated worked well! I tried the Gator Gumbo and it was delicious. My daughter had the red beans and rice and it was flavorful without being too spicy for a 7 year old to enjoy. My boyfriend enjoyed his jambalaya too. The only thing I was disappointed about was the sweet potato bread pudding. I’ve had theirs many times even just called in only that for a carry out and this time it was hard and dry beneath the sauce on top. I was disappointed. I’m sure it was just due to needing such a large amount to cater to the overwhelming crowd coming in for the holidays. I will be back!

Overall, friendly staff and quick service can be found here. It's probably a better place to drink and hangout rather than a place to eat food. Portions are extremely small and often the dish has very little of its "star" ingredient. They used to have vegetarian options but looks like those has been axed.

Beignets were over done, dense, and caked in powered sugar. They used to include a chocolate sauce with it but either they forgot or its been removed as an offering. Bold of them to compare it to Cafe Du Monte. Gumbo had very little meat to it and did not look like it had any okra at all. Ordered on Saturday night and smoked duck was the meat option. I did not find enough or even any smoked duck in there to say how it tasted. The medium was about 1 pint including the rice so you're getting just a few tablespoon of actual gumbo with your order. Same deal with the Jambalaya. The crab cake had little to no crab. It was more like a fried cake despite their menu saying it would have lumps of crab in it. Jambalaya pasta was the only thing that look like it was an actual entree, portion wise. Cheese curds had a unique seasoning on it so that was good but not enough to save this meal.

I don't know how much food they give in the restaurant, but the to go portions are horribly small. The photo here shows the "large" portion of the jambalaya and etouffee. I would expect at least two meals out of a large, but this only served one.

When we called in to see why they were this size the staff said they had recently reduced their take out size containers to keep in heat.

Tried it once, don’t need to try it again. The vibe and music is so off putting and bizarre, I couldn’t wait to get out of there. The crab cake Po boy tasted like they were from a massive bag of frozen crabcakes on a microwaved hot dog bun. And the sweet potato fries way too big and therefore undercooked. Definitely not worth $15.

**UPDATE** I received a very nice card in the mail from the manager of North of The Bayou. It was an apology with an unexpected compensation that more than made up for the food not received. She made it clear that she was aware that to much time passed before this should have been rectified, but it was such a nice gesture that not many extend anymore. I have changed my rating from a 2 star. We will be back and do love the food and drinks.

As a long time customer, I am very dismayed by the customer service we have received at North Of The Bayou. We have always enjoyed there food but recently had an issue with management contacting us back after several phone calls. We did order take out on a very busy night. We had ordered Beignets as our dessert. When we got our meal home, no beignets. I get how that could happen, no problem. We were charged for it so I called, left a message with my info and asked for them just to not charge our cc. CC was charged, 3 more calls were made. Two messages and speaking with one person who assured us a manager would contact us. Still have not heard anything going on several weeks. It will be a while before we go back, there are a lot of choices in Madison and customer service makes or breaks a restaurant.

On Wednesday March 17, 2021 I ordered red beans & rice, and deep fried catfish for pick up. I will NEVER go back there. They gave me one piece of catfish that was so bland, there was absolutely NO seasoning on it. Plus, the way they fried it, one end of it was hard as a brick. The red beans and rice also was so horribly tasting that I just wanted to scream. Then they put a piece of bread in the bag that seemed like it was 2 days old. I had a horrible experience!!!!

The food and service we're very good. However, we were very surprised that the waitress was not wearing a mask. I asked her about it and she said that it wasn't a requirement. She did offer to put one on if it would make us more comfortable, but since we had already been talking for a couple of minutes I figured that any transmission of the COVID-19 virus would already have occurred. Wearing a mask may not be a legal requirement, but it's a very good policy and this is the only restaurant we've seen where the wait staff wasn't wearing them. For this reason I doubt that we will return there, despite the fact that we really like their food.

My husband and I were excited to try this restaurant, but we left disappointed. We went on a Friday evening and it was not that busy, yet.
The hostess and our server were nice. We ordered the nachos, fried cod and a bourbon BBQ burger. The queso on the nachos was delicious! Unfortunately, that was the best thing we had. Our main meals came out lukewarm. The burger was smothered in so much of the BBQ sauce that it was all I could taste, and the cod tasted as if it was cooked in old oil. We won't go back for regular service; however, since the nachos were good, we are willing to go back for drinks and see how their other appetizers are. Overall, I was unimpressed, when I really wanted to like it.

I really want to like this place. I genuinely love cajun food and it's right by my house.

The atmosphere is interesting. It's a huge pink building visible from the highway. Inside it's part medival castle, part quinceanera. It was originally a supper club, then a night club, then a Mexican restaurant, and you can still see the iterations of all previous establishments. I'd be very curious to see what it looked like circa 1985 or 1990. It's a very interesting building with 5 stories and multiple dining rooms.

They have many cajun/creole staples and a few odd midwesternized versions. My friend and I decided to try the shrimp po boy, seafood gumbo, red beans and rice, and beignets.

Everything was right in theory but in practice, it reminded me as if Applebees or Denny's had added cajun items to their menu. Everything seemed bland and reheated. The breading would not stay on the shrimp, the roll was the wrong consistency for a poboy, and it had pickles added that were not the right flavor (poboys do often come with pickles). The gumbo and RBR had the texture of canned soup and badly needed hot sauce. The beignets were ok (how do you mess up fried dough?) but heavy, and not light and fluffy at all.

If they make any significant changes I might return, otherwise, I think I'll stick to New Orleans Takeout despite their limited parking.

My favorite place to go while visiting in Madison. Oysters so delish. you'll wonder why you waited. Don't wait, these are the best!

Not busy Friday @ 5:15. Kid said 10" wait. Went to bar....took 10 " to get waited on. 10 " later went to kid & said it's been 20" your not even full. Found our name & X'd a table for us. Service & food good after that.

I really enjoyed this New Orleans kind of restaurant. Oysters in the half shell, crab cakes, red beans and rice, all really tasty. Niice wines, ambience and excellent service.

Nice fish fry. Had battered cod and it was done well with minimal grease. Cole slaw was creamy and spiced just right. The fries were crispy but not overdone. Pretty good deal for 10.99.

We weren't expecting the food to come out looking so beautiful!! I had the baked perch (I have a dairy allergy) and it was delicious! We will be back.

Don't judge a book by its cover. The food in this place is amazing. Even my son's chicken strips and fries were beyond expectations. Each dish had its own unique flavor and the presentation were beautifully done. Thanks and we'll come back next time we go through Madison.

Free, large if poorly maintained parking lot. Immediately seated. Fast pleasant service & ambiance. Friday two-piece cod fish fry was good as was gumbo. Desert cream brulee was small, but excellent taste. Good food, good service & good value.

Tasty Food but portions on small side. 1 small piece toasted bread with soup or gumbo. Extra cost for extra piece. For me, Value just fair

Fun music playing. Wait Staff took great care of us, making awesome suggestions, and evening dividing up our complicated bill accurately!

Had a shrimp po' boy sandwich with Cajun Mayo. Had a salad with yummy andouille sausage dressing. Had the crab cakes and had creme brulee for dessert. Everything was so good!

Absolutely spectacular food! Our server Aaron was spectacularly helpful and a genuine pleasure to interact with!

I suggest asking for some cajun seasoning if you order the gravy fries. A three pinches adds an awesome little twist to a classic poutine-style dish.

Chicken wrapped in bacon is not something I would order but I thought my kid would eat it. Too spicy for him but I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.

We were here on a Thursday--live music, not crowded, pleasant atmosphere. Outstanding food--we had seafood gumbo, jambalaya and red beans and rice. All were flavored just right. The gumbo had nice size shrimp, and the sausage in the other dishes was cooked perfectly. Our server, Aaron, anticipated every need and our desserts were a great way to end the evening.

Went here for Mardi Gras and the place was hopping. Service took longer than usually, but then it was rather busy.

Pros:
Good Food
Average to Excellent Service
Clean Bathrooms
Drink Selection

Cons:
Table waiting had no real organization
