The atmosphere was on the nicer end, but not formal by any means. The service was great and the staff were helpful and friendly. The food was alright and the serving size for the meal I got (bourbon salmon) was a little small for the price paid. That, paired with a staff who was over aggressive with plate clearing brings this restaurant down to 3 stars.

The scallops special tonight was delicious. They were crispy on the ooutside, and tender inside. The sweet potato puree was also tasty. It was the perfect combination of flavors. Barb, our wait person did a fabulous job serving us, returning just when we needed her, for more water, coffee, and dessert. Lovely evening.

Staff is very pleasant and professional . The food is very tasty and fresh. Definitely a from scratch kitchen. Ive eaten dinner and brunch there now and plan to go back often. Love that theres options to eat at the bar, inside. Or outside. I made the mistake of not getting their build your own bloody mary when i went for brunch on Sunday but heard a table near me loving theirs, so i will have to go back soon

Was here for someone's bday party who had booked a room/large table. I was able to see the bill and was shocked at how over-priced the food was. It was the longest wait for food we ever had. When it finally came, all food was average at best. The sliders were so overcooked and dry, they weren't even edible. Based on this experience, I would never eat here on my own, nor would I recommend it.

The bistro is a pleasant place to eat and/or drink. There are 3 rooms with different purposes to meet different needs including a family oriented room. Staff is typically friendly and efficient. The service is good. The food is consistently good in all categories. The menu is stable with many "go to" options that have been on the menu for years. If I had any issue it would be the lack of experimentation with menu but I understand they have a good thing going.

I've been here for lunch a few times and I've always liked it, but this was our first time here for dinner and I was very impressed! We sat on the patio and it's a really nice atmosphere. I ordered the short rib and my husband ordered the salmon special with artichoke risotto - both were fabulous! The mushrooms with the short rib were a delicious addition and the red pepper sauce was the perfect accompaniment to the salmon. We also had the flourless chocolate cake with their vanilla ice cream instead of the raspberry and it was perfect! I'm giving 4 stars because there weren't enough servers so ours didn't have a chance to be very attentive.

Always great food. Bloody mary bar on Sundays is my favorite! Their offering of a family room is something I think more restaurants should consider (if they want to expand in the family market). I have to say something about their tables makes them always sticky though. Not sure if the resin/acrylic they coated them with is being dissolved with whatever they're cleaning them with or what.

Awful apathetic staff. One night in Shorewood looking for a place to eat the village was busy so we called and asked if we arrived in the next five minutes would we be able to get a table. Pierre who clearly has no idea what his job is for the restaurant, said yeah no problem and did not bother to ask for our name which would indicate they were not at all busy.

When we arrived Pierre himself would not seat us as “we had some walk-ins” and there were no tables available. That is unacceptable and unfortunately not only will I never return but I will make sure to never mention this restaurant as a recommendation even going so far as to suggest other locations.

Go elsewhere. The lack of service will ruin your experience. There are plenty of other restaurants close by.

The food here is good, but a bit pricey. I also wish that they had a few more vegetarian options. They've had the same few (margarita pizza, mushroom veg sandwich, and two entree salads) for years now. I get that it's important to have 'the classics', but we've honestly stopped going because we got tired of those choices. It might be an issue of demographics though; most of the clientele seems older, so it's possible that this is what they want.

Maura did such a great job on our rehearsal dinner this last Friday. Everyone thought the food was great and the ambiance of the room was just right for us. Your staff and servers were awesome and the flow of food was well planned out the whole night. The play area inside the room was a wonderful touch for the kids as well.

We have eaten here before and found food reasonable. For father's day I ordered chicken and waffles to try something new. The meal was way below expectations for this restaurant - dried out chicken bits and tiny dry toaster waffles - tasteless. Should have turned the meal back but didn't want to ruin our father's day meal. Should be taken off menu.
Break fast skillet seemed a better choice if I dare return.
My overall impression is that the quality has changed.

Toys in kids are completely busted and/or totally grimy. Asked about chalk, waitress said look in the toys- none. Food is pretty tasty for price, but expect $100+ for 4 people. Lastly, atmosphere- sign on door to men's bathroom said, "Mr. Plumber, urinal will not flush, and second stall leaking.." A handle was busted off one of the sinks. Not something you see at a place that is $100 for 4.

I have been back to the North Star American Bistro four times.
Each time I am hoping for a better experience.
Sadly it seems each time there is always one or more short comings that you would not expect.
It is like a student that is capable of an A grade but for some reason cannot achieve any higher than a C.

I will start with the things that are constant yet very weird and annoying.
There is a bread person walking around whose job it seems is to make you feel special because you received a single thin slice of bread.
Should I ask for more bread? Give me a break, provide a table basket with variety and be done with it.
Then there is an individual who walks (does laps) around the restaurant not providing eye contact with any customers.
Are the employees told to look busy?

My last visit was the evening of 2/14/13. The restaurant was busy and we had a waiter who could not seem to get things right for us. Wrong drink ect.
Then all of a sudden he was gone (MIA) and someone else shows up, to whom I re-stated my previous requests.

It really seems beyond employee training this restaurant should really get a grasp of hospitality.

This is one of few restaurants that accepts reservations.
I have arrived (dined) with and without reservations.

The food is a pleasant surprise in variety and taste. Portions average to small.
Good bar atmosphere. Happy hour I believe yet have not attended.
The bottom line is if I return, it would be for the food.
