My recent visit to Otto’s Restaurant in Madison, Wisconsin was nothing short of outstanding. From the moment we walked in, the warm, inviting atmosphere set the stage for what turned out to be one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time.

The spinach artichoke pasta with shrimp deserves special mention — it was absolutely phenomenal. The pasta was perfectly cooked, the sauce was rich and flavorful without being heavy, and the shrimp were tender and seasoned to perfection. It struck that perfect balance of comfort food and fine dining elegance.

Our server/bartender, Brian, elevated the experience even further. He took our entire table’s order completely by memory — not a single note, and not a single mistake! That alone was impressive, but he went above and beyond throughout the night with impeccable timing, genuine warmth, and deep knowledge of the menu.

And then there were the drinks — wow. I ordered a Manhattan, and I can honestly say it was the best I’ve ever had. Perfectly balanced, smooth, and crafted with real skill. Brian clearly knows his way around the bar.

If you’re in Madison and looking for an evening of exceptional food, top-tier service, and craft cocktails done right, Otto’s should be at the top of your list. I’ll absolutely be back!

I hadn’t been to this restaurant in many years so it was a treat to return. The ambiance is quite lovely in this old farmhouse. The service was pretty good but we lost our waitress for quite some time. I was with my very elderly family member, I felt the waitress could have been a little more patient with her however the hostess and other staff were very pleasant and accommodating. My scallops were delicious! Salad was boring and lacked flavor or creativity. Overall good experience!

Our first time here. Stuffed mushroom appetizer was delicious. Mushroom bisque soup was tasty. Seafood trio consisted of lots of potatoes and red peppers, only 1 scallop, 2 shrimp, and a small square of salmon. It was hoping for more seafood for the price.
The salmon in grape leaves was good but lacked flavor. We had the bread pudding for dessert, which was free for our anniversary celebration. It was not a moist cake like a typical bread pudding, seemed more of dry sweet bread/biscuit with a glaze. The old farm house charm was nice. Staff were pleasant and met all our needs. But sadly, we went for the food and the dishes we had were definitely not worth the price. I don’t think we will be going back.

Bryan took good care of us. We don't do fine dining, so we depended on Bryan's recommendations. Three people shared two appetizers and two entrees. The food was very good and we ate until we were full, would love to return again one day.

My husband and I went to Otto’s last weekend for a date night, never having eaten there before. We had a reservation and were seated at a massive table near the emergency exit. There was only one other table with guests in our section, so I had asked if we could move to a more intimate table for two in the sunshine. We were told no and that the tables were reserved, despite being a party of two moving to another table for two. Our waitress, Tara, was fantastic. She didn’t understand why we were at such a large table and tried to get us moved, but she too was unable to make it happen.

Everything we ate was delicious. We got crab cakes, filet mignon, scallops, and the bread basket.

The atmosphere was ok. It was tainted by the fact that we felt we were undeserving of a nicer table.

As mentioned before, Tara was a great waitress, she was attentive, help, and had a good attitude.

Not sure if we’d return though. If we did, we’d try for a table outside.

Ordered the filet and added 3 scallops. Food came, no scallops. “There was a misunderstanding in the kitchen” ate the most mediocre at best filet of my life. Saving grace, the green beans were spot on. Half way through dinner the most undercooked scallops I’ve ever seen came out. I passed on them, as there was zero sear and still jelly on the middle. 10 min after finishing my meal, a new set of scallops arrive. New excuse, “American scallops don’t sear like others”

Sad to say the champagne was the highlight of the meal. $300 for the most average meal I’ve had in a long time.

I don’t expect to be back, and would advise others to do the same. Such a shame because my wife and I were excited because it was our first time here

The restaurant is slightly hard to get to. It's tucked away, and has the sign on the wrong side of the entrance so it's easy to miss.

Food was decent. Though their tasting menu is just a starter, main, and dessert. It felt pretty simple, though was cooked well.

The atmosphere is pretty noisy, to the point where it's rather difficult to hold a conversation.

Service was very slow. The server seemed to avoid eye contact when trying to get their attention.

Overall was hoping for a nice date night and we both left feeling annoyed and ready to be out of there.

Stopped in for happy hour drinks and appetizers. Bartender was attentive, but aloof. Mushroom, shrimp and crustini trio was bland, poorly cooked ... kind of like samples at Cosco. Felt pretentious and stuffy. Not impressed. Very disappointed, as Ottos was a fav with my late parents who frequently enjoyed the live jazz and welcoming atmosphere over the years. I guess you can't go home again 😕

My husband and I came to Otto’s for a date night.

Otto’s is located in an old house. Therefore, the layout of the restaurant inside is quite unique. Along with the lighting and decor, it gives the restaurant a cozy and warm feel to it.

Nicole was our server. After telling her it was our first time here, she was quite helpful and answered all of our questions.

(First I’d like to apologize- I did not use flash for my pictures. I didn’t want to be THAT person. I also forgot to take a picture of the Chef’s Tasting Menu, so I don’t recall the actual names of the plates we had)

I tried their NA apple mule, which was quite delicious.

For an appetizer we started off with the Otto’s sample platter. Which included bruschetta, stuffed mushrooms and prosciutto wrapped shrimp.
Everything was very good.

We ended up ordering off of the Chef’s tasting Menu that was available.

So for our first course, we both had the bacon wrapped chestnuts.
These were quite yummy.

Second course, I ordered the veal, mashed potatoes and asparagus.

The sauce for this meal, pulled everything together beautifully. It was incredible.

My husband went with the seafood platter. I couldn’t tell you what all was in it. I remember sea bass, mussels, shrimp maybe? It was amazing.

For the first course, we shared the espresso crème brûlée. Yes you heard that right. ESPRESSO crème brûlée. It. was. amazing.
We also had the cherry macaroons. Which were unlike anything I’ve ever had. I still think of them.

The environment was cozy and intimate. Our server was amazing. The food, you can tell is carefully crafted, and arrives HOT to the table.

What more could you ask for?

If you need a date night location, check this place out!

I really don't have complaints about our waitress she was fine, the other waiters were distracting and somewhat loud at times but whatever. The issue I had was that for a "fine dining" experience the food would have been sub par for a supermarket buffet. The scallops were rubbery and tough the risotto was undercooked so badly it was inedible. The Moscow mules were bitter with and without liquor in them. The chicken was dry, the asparagus was super fat and tasteless and the salad was just boring like greens and vinaigrette are a good base but on its own just bitter and difficult to eat. I thought the old building was cool but the paint chipping off the corners just screams of neglect. I wouldn't go back if it was a third the price it just wasn't good.

Wonderful intimate restaurant. Great food, great sevice. They charge for it, but totally worth it, if only for a special occasion. Anniversary coming up? This is a perfect place to take your partner. Lamb chops is 1 of their specialties (though lamb is not my choice). For appetizer we had crab cakes (Moroccan/N African style, with curry seasoning). I had the salmon wrapped in grape leaves. My husband had a steak. We split a chocolate truffle dessert. Everything was so yummy. We didn't have drinks (alcohol) but they have full bar service. I think the per person cost for the 2 of us was about $65 (with tip). Thanks to my sister for treating us!

Update:

On a recent visit, we felt invisible to staff. Not only did staff not serve us as to be expected of a restaurant in this price range, they casually chatted amongst themselves as if we were not even there. Maybe because my partner and I were speaking Spanish? We decided to pay for our drinks, leave, and go spend $300 on dinner for two people somewhere else.

Previous review:

Otto's was an experience worth sharing. Great for special occasions. But life is short, so why not create an excuse to spoil yourself at Otto's. Excellent drinks, seafood, and ribeye. Attentive and accommodating service. Highly recommended.

The food was delicious but the service was really lacking. We had to ask for water refills several times and they hardly checked on us. Since we were a group of 8, my husband (who works as a waiter and has for 8 years) said the $60 gratuity was already calculated into the bill and that's why the waitress was ignoring us.

We called several weeks before our wedding to make this reservation at Otto's and specifically asked over the phone if we could bring in a small cake since this would be our dinner after our small wedding ceremony. They said we could and didn't say anything about a fee. The night of our wedding dinner, I asked the waitress for 8 small plates and clean forks. I was informed that there is a $15 cake cutting fee. I explained that we were not told this over the phone and $15 is a pricey and unpleasant surprise since dinner was already so expensive at Otto's. That didn't matter to the waitress. She brought plates, forks and a knife, charged us $15, and then we had to cut our own cake even though a 'cake cutting fee' implies she or another staff member would have cut the cake.

We've been to Otto's a few times in the past and enjoyed our experience, but after this very disappointing experience on our wedding day of all days, we won't be back.

We live across the street, so we enjoyed it about 4 years go. The menu has not changed in 7 years, the portions have gotten smaller, and the service has declined.
Last night I witnessed the bartenders pouring extremely generous pours to a bunch of regulars and catering to them inappropriately. And then, one of these inebriated regulars, bought a round including the bartender! A bartender who openly drinks on the job?
The calamari are delicious as was the bruschetta. The drinks were weak and mostly ice. I wish could give a better review, but these are the facts.

Such a great meal that I'm still thinking about it the next day. We arrived a bit early and had a cocktail at the bar while we waited. The Otto's Sidecars were on point but a challenge to carry upstairs in a martini glass. I look forward to returning.

We went here for a friends birthday. Most of us had been here before, and I’ve always had a good meal at Otto’s, but this one was top-notch. We started with the mussels, crab cakes, and calamari. The mussels were jumbo and in the most delectable cream sauce. My husband wiped the plate clean. The crab cakes were different, but had so many amazing flavors including the sauces it really came together nicely. The calamari was also fantastic, actual calamari not frozen sticks or circles. Even a few full pieces with the tentacles! I love that. Lightly battered, excellent marinara. On to the next course - my husband had the tomato bisque which was phenomenal and I had the Caesar salad. The Caesar salad, couldn’t have been better dressed with an above average amount of Caesar dressing, which is hard to find in a restaurant these days. I also thought it was fantastic and above average. Again, I’m super picky and I just went to Rare a few weeks ago and I thought the Caesar was better than Rare’s. Finally, I had the Ribeye special and he had the seafood trio. The ribeye special had an amazing mushroom sauce and was served with Yukon gold roasted potatoes and asparagus. Best steak I’ve had in a restaurant in years. The seafood trio was great too but with the pesto I think it would pair better with pasta. That’s just personal preference. Make sure you like pesto if you order this dish. Our server was a cute blonde with glasses that ran her a$$ off up and down those stairs (3rd level) and she was so tentative and paid high attention to drink level. Outstanding service. Overall I thought everything was above average and I would HIGHLY recommend dining here.

Food was great. Service was terrible. We were there to celebrate a birthday and put that information in the reservation. It wasn't acknowledged even after verbally mentioning it to the staff. We were never asked if we wanted anything else to drink. Water wasn't being refilled. Plates weren't being cleared. We were put in a corner and seemed to be forgotten even though we were a party of 6. We've always enjoyed this place in the past but not this time.

Otto's is a lovely spot for a quiet, sophisticated lunch. The menu is unique, and everything I have eaten there was delicious. The service is excellent from seasoned staff who like to engage with their patrons. I love the warm home-like atmosphere in the dining room upstairs. Don't be put off by the bar chairs stacked in the bar as you walk through to the dining area. It does feel unwelcoming. The bar area is not open for lunch, but you can order wine and drinks with your meal. This is fast becoming a favorite spot for special lunches.

Walked in and the first question asked by bartender was did we have reservations, we did.... We were a party of 4 and
there were 4 available seats at the bar. We asked to order a cocktail but the bartender said there was no room at the bar, standing room only and we could go to our table and have our drinks served there. We were here early to have a cocktail at the bar and take advantage of their 50 percent off appetizers. We asked if having a drink at our table would we receive the 50 percent.
He said yes. Once seated the waitress however said the the 50 percent was only available at the bar. Objecting to the waitress that the bartender sent us to be seated at our table and assured us we would get the 50 percen, we were then approached by 2 other individuals, one being the manager saying the 50 percent off appetizers was only at the bar. Protesting we were finally given the 50 percent off.
Our dinner was delicious but the attitude we received from the rude bartender and the hassle we endured made us feel unwanted. Very bad experience for us and hardly worth a return.
High class snooty place and short on service and hospitality.

I recently had the pleasure of revisiting Otto's Restaurant and Bar in Madison, Wisconsin, after several years, and I must say that it was an unforgettable dining experience. From the moment I arrived, the inviting atmosphere on the deck set the perfect tone for my meal.

My server, Tracy, deserves a special mention for her outstanding service. She was not only pleasant but also incredibly helpful in assisting me with my menu selection. Her knowledge and recommendations played a significant role in making my meal memorable.

To start, I ordered the Moroccan Crab Cakes as an appetizer, and they were nothing short of amazing. These crab cakes were a true culinary delight, and I savored every bite. In fact, they were so delicious that I found myself secretly relieved to be dining alone because I didn't want to share these tasty gems with anyone!

Moving on to my entrée, I opted for the Seared Scallop Salad, and it left me instantly impressed. The scallops were incredibly fresh, and they had a taste that transported me straight to the dock, as if they had just come off the boat. The blanched asparagus that accompanied the dish was a delightful surprise, and it tasted like something you could only find in season. The chef's preparation of this dish truly felt magical.

To conclude my meal, I took Tracy's knowledgeable recommendation and enjoyed a slice of cheesecake. It was the perfect way to end an exceptional dining experience at Otto's. The cheesecake was rich, creamy, and a delightful way to satisfy my sweet tooth.

In summary, my recent visit to Otto's Restaurant and Bar was a revelation, and I regret not returning sooner. The combination of a warm and inviting atmosphere, exceptional service by Tracy, and a menu filled with culinary delights left a lasting impression on me. I can confidently say that I won't be waiting years to return to Otto's next time. It's a place that I'll be eager to revisit soon to enjoy more of their delicious offerings.

We had been coming here for several years before the pandemic. This week was our first time back. Unfortunately, the prices have gone way up for the same menu items and the biggest disappointment is that they now charge $3 for the rolls they used to serve for free. Even if you order a salad, no bread comes with it now. And $7 for plain iced tea?? They charge for refills. Again, very chintzy. Additionally, there's very loud live music most nights they are open, which really makes conversation difficult. I used to really love this place but feel a little robbed. The food isn't as good as I remembered it, either, even for the jacked up prices. I am disappointed.

Excellent happy hour in a pleasant and unpretentious atmosphere. Appetizers were delicious, and my cocktail of choice was made with perfection.

8.26.23 update: Dinner of filet mignon and mashed potatoes with a side of asparagus was fabulous. Filet cooked to specifications with exacting accuracy and seasoned with such magnificent skill and experience (thank you, Chef!) Mashed potatoes are something beyond normal expectations. Creamy, rich and absolutely amazing. House salad was fresh but not special enough to accompany this caliber meal. Vinaigrette is lackluster.

We ordered "Seared scallop", "Grilled lamb chops" and "strawberry Napoleon"
My scallop had sand in it and when I brought it up to the server, they told me that "their scallop is fresh and bought today", the fact that it had sand and not edible was not a matter of being fresh or not, simply it was not cleaned and they did not do anything about it even after they heard about the problem, I ended up eating my husband food cause the feeling of sand under teeth was disgusting. About the risotto that came with the scallop, I would say I didn't enjoy that as well.
"Grilled lamb chops" was average and nothing special about it.
"strawberry Napoleon" was all clumsy.
The only good thing about this restaurant was the beautiful deck they had.

Restaurants that are situated in an old house are always a treat to enjoy, and Otto's is no exception. The restaurant has a very quaint, cozy feel to it, making you feel at home from the moment you arrive. A lot of outdoor seating is available around the property, and there is also plenty of seating inside the house. The food is hearty and filling - I had the seafood trio, which was absolutely scrumptious and filled me up. You can tell that the food is prepared from scratch - everything has a genuine, authentic flavor to it. Finally, our waitress was incredible. Erika was our waitress, and she did a fantastic job making sure my table was attended to, as well as bringing a welcome sense of heart and humor to the table. She even gave me advice for college! If you're in the Madison area looking for a place to enjoy genuine, friendly service and delicious food, look no further than Otto's!

This was my first time attempting to dine at Ottos. My friends and I got a table in the bar and ordered a bottle of wine. As the server was opening the bottle, the manager came over and told my friend that she needed to leave and he did not want her in the bar and that we could stay but she had to leave. My friend was an old employee who quit due to a hostile work environment a few years ago, however she does not cause trouble or do anything that would make us think she wasn’t welcome. Extremely rude, first and last time I will ever come here! I have never had such a shocking experience, especially at a restaurant that is held to such high standards. Do not recommend.

Love going to Otto's for food and music on the deck. They've got curtains and heaters if it gets cold but usually it's perfect on its own. They have a lot of gluten-free and vegetarian choices. Their wait staff are excellent, so friendly and fast that I always have to leave a nice tip. 😉

Food is excellent, and that's a great top priority for a restaurant. The halibut with beurre blanc is a great choice if they have it. Service is slow but it was a busy night. The only issue I have with the dining room is how loud other tables seem to be, it would be a much more peaceful place to eat if there was more ambient sound or sound deadening.

In all of Madison, this was absolutely worst service ever by bartender Janey who completely ignored us. Had to remind her of our drink order and had to call her over for service which she never once asked us how everything was even though she walked right past us a few times. But, she did ask us as she was handing us the bill. When I spoke to her regarding the lack of customer service(there were less than 10 people in the bar!) I mentioned that we get better service at BWW’s which was a sports bar vs the level of Otto’s establishment
( which we did have better service and there were way more than 10 people at BWW’s and left over 20% tip) Janey replied “go there then” . Never had we heard that before and was shocked by the rudeness! Hope she enjoyed her .73 cent tip!

Entire table of 7 ladies thoroughly enjoyed Mediterranean appetizer, salads, tomato bisque, and multiple entrees. Sea bass melted in your mouth! Sea food platter had shrimp, scallops and salmon with tasty veggies. Spinach artichoke pasta, Greek chicken salad, and Mediterranean platter {esp lamb and couscous) were also delicious.

Made a reservation for lunch. Somehow, in the comments section of the reservation through Open Table it looked as if we requested service with someone named Kelly (no idea how this happened).
When we arrived, the hostess/waitress named Tracy informed us Kelly would not be helping us as requested, because she had been fired and we should trust her when she told us that Kelly was awful. After that awkward introduction we sat down at our table and tried to have a conversation which was consistently interrupted by the same waitress taking a call for the restaurant in the dining room that must not have gone well as she raised her voice and appeared to hang up on the caller. She then proceeded to yell across the room to another employee and tell them all about it and they very loudly discussed how awful the person was and how they had previously had a fight with them. Finally, another couple arrived to eat and the two employees toned things down.
Fortunately, the food was excellent and Tracy became more pleasant as the meal went on. I don’t think we’ll ever plan to go there for lunch again though.

The food was good, but the service took longer than expected. We arrived at 5:30 and didn't get our main meal until 7 and we had a show to catch. If you have a time limit, let the server know. We took our food to go.

Very nice location, a cool idea making the current house into a restaurant. However it’s very crammed with tables and people right on top of each other. The food was good but nothing spectacular. The girl at the bar was nice but the servers all seemed stressed and not very friendly. Everyone has bad days however, still think it’s just 3 stars.

Terrible service. We showed up at 5:15 p.m., for a 5:30 p.m. reservation and were greeted by a hostess who said it's good we're early because they were double booked and that we would have to give up our table at 7 p.m. We said no problem, as we had tickets to a show and needed to be out before 7 p.m. anyway. Our server basically ignored us much of the night and when it got to be 6:30 p.m. and we hadn't gotten our meals, we were getting concerned. She finally brought out 5 of 6 entrees. At 6:45 p.m. we received NO information from our server and we had run out of time, so we told them to cancel the 6th meal and bring us the check, that we had to leave for the show. The server then reappears with the 6th entre, after the other 5 had already eaten, plopped it down on the table and said it was too late to cancel the order, it had already been made; that it was unfortunate that they gave our 6th entre to another customer. They had already put the tip on the order, or they would have received nothing from us. It's a shame that their service is so poor, because the food was actually pretty good; at least for the those who received their meal. Our recommendation would be to go to the Harvey House, good food and great service.

Food was good. Waitress was very good. Hostess was rude & told us that patrons could remain at their table for only one hour after they had been seated. Interesting that we weren't told this as when we were seated. She said that's the rule on Friday and Saturday. We won't be returning to Otto's.

LOVE Otto's! Happy hour is great, but do try the full menu. Gotta get the mussels in cream sauce. Use your bread to sop up as much of the sauce as you can. Choose any other app - you can't go wrong. After an entree I've never had enough room for dessert. Staff is excellent!

My husband and I ate here for our 13th anniversary. It was our first time visiting this restaurant. It was kind of weird being in the first floor with no one really saying anything or greeting the guests right away. There is really no sign that you should go upstairs for your reservation. After a couple awkward stares we were told to go upstairs. Our waitress was very kind and attentive; she always made sure we had drinks and bread. I think her name is "Quin/Queen'' (sorry if this is not correct spelling). We would love to return as long as she's our waitress again. I had lamb chops and my husband had seafood dish. We both enjoyed our dinners. I had an Otto's Manhattan cocktail, which I honestly didn't really like but I finished it. The wine we had was great! Our dessert was yummy! Overall I would recommend this place for a nice meal.

My husband and I were married in front of the fireplace at Otto's with a guest list of about 25. This was back in 2007. The ambiance was amazing - just perfect for our quaint little second wedding with family and a few close friends. The food was amazing, the staff was attentive and the setting romantic. Everytime we have returned since our wedding 15 years ago, we receive a free dessert and when possible, we get seated right in front of the fireplace! The menu is pricey but worth it and the atmosphere makes for a very memorable and romantic evening of fine dining.

Had the crab cakes, which were very good, and the duck confit entree salad which was sublime - greens, feta, blackberries, apples, dressing and seasoning complementing so well, and a generous portion of duck cooked to crispy skin and tender lean meat perfection. The music was equally sublime!

The ratings for this place led to high expectations before I walked in, and I must say that I was still pleasantly surprised. I encountered no less than three employees when walking in, and all of them projected the same pleasant emotions and elation about my presence. They truly made me feel welcome in their restaurant. I was promptly seated, and the waitress was pleasant in her interaction, and did not give me the feeling that she was in a rush to be anywhere else - she was patient with my questions, and gave great recommendations. Needless to say, the food was phenomenal. It was served hot, and on time. I ordered an appetizer, and then a tasting menu with wine pairings. The staff was accommodating in letting me substitute items I did not prefer in the set menu. Overall, a wonderful dining experience.
